I was reading through the comments of YOYOK and one of them said “This song if for the background friends, the third wheels, the invited last-minute as an afterthought, the never chosen to be a bridesmaid/groomsman, the shoulder-to-cry-on but never reciprocated, the lonely people-pleasers, and the eternally quiet kids afraid of taking up too much space or talking too long too loudly” and I feel like the perfectly summed up the vibe of YOYOK.
Wait. I just noticed that the Daisy Mae comic is called Daisy Mae and Li’l Abner in Paper Dolls… for those that don’t know, John Mayer wrote a song called Paper dolls that was (allegedly 🙄) about Taylor. This is the synopsis of the comic: Beautiful Daisy Mae Scragg was hopelessly in love with Li’l Abner through the entire course of the 43 year run of Al Capp’s comic strip. During most of it Abner took Daisy for granted and exhibited little romantic interest in her voluptuous charms. In 1952 Abner reluctantly proposed to Daisy Mae to emulate the wedding of his comic strip ideel, Fearless Fosdick. Fosdick’s wedding turned out to be fake, but Abner and Daisy’s was real. Once married, Abner became relatively domesticated and the two produced their only child, Honest Abe, in 1953. Like Abner’s Mammy Yokum and other wimmenfolk in Dogpatch, Daisy Mae did all the work while the menfolk generally did nothing whatsoever. Despite this near slavish role, Daisy Mae seldom complained, one of her countless virtues. Her blood family, on the other hand, was as evil as could be. Wild plot twists often took Daisy Mae to exotic locales and she was frequently wooed by rich and handsome men, but she always returned to Dogpatch and her true, if worthless, love. SO LONG DAISY MAE!
The way I FORGOT about the "Maybe she should write a song about being the problem" thing and you said that and it was like PTSD flashbacks. She's so brilliant omg
@@jdaqua Plus, she literally said she knew he [boyfriend] was trouble but went for him anyway, and "shame on me" in I Knew You Were Trouble like she knew her part in the story, lol
I always took the line "The jokes weren't funny / I took the money" as a reference to her going on talk shows and being made fun of but sucking it up for the sake of her career
same! i immediately thought of all the times she went on ellen and ellen tried her best to just humiliate her, especially that clip where she puts pictures of a bunch of guys on screen and taylor literally shouts at her to stop and sounds like she’s on the verge of tears
Y'ALL the fact i had to let MULTIPLE men at apple support watch this video through to help me find the problem and fix it 😅😅😅 Let's just say I am educating the masses and also TRULY humbled by them seeing my dance moves.
In karma when she says "Karma is the guy on the screen- Coming straight home to me" I just picture taylor watching anything and everything Joe has ever been in whenever she misses him and just sitting in her bed looking at the screen being like omg thats my boyfriend can you believe? Or facetiming him and having those same emotions. Like there is such a wholesomeness to hearing her excitement about her relationship and it makes me positively giddy
I know mastermind is about Joe, but I also think it's about her relationship with the fans. "To make them love me and make it seem effortless, this was the first time I felt the need to confess" is her being her most vulnerable self with this album and us saying we knew it all along and love her for being such a masterminddd
i completely agree! i think mastermind and anti-hero are sister songs in that way, they both can refer to her insecurities within relationships but also her fans
Probably other people have said this, but this album feels like therapy, like when you make progress in therapy and understand your insecurities and regrets and then turn them into growth
Yessss!! It feels like therapy for me for sure. I’ve had some very similar relationships/situationships and having a more mature look at those situations feels so therapeutic. I’m no long heartbroken over them and very much happily married and in love. But it feels good to have this new perspective of those instances.
THEORY ABOUT YOYOK! “Everything you lose is a step you take” = Lover era ending prematurely but she turned it into an opportunity to try new things with Folklore and Evermore!
So, the lyric, "No one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I've been scheming like a criminal ever since, to make them love me and make it seem effortless...this is the first time I've felt the need to confess. And I swear, I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian 'cuz I care." not only sums up the song Mastermind but is the central conflict behind the entirety of Midnights...and is also the key to understanding Taylor's entire discography and artistic persona up to this point. It's a theme that pops up over and over again throughout her albums and also in her poetry--"no amount of friends at 25 will fill the empty seats at the lunch tables of your past." It's a raw and powerful line full of contradictions, and imo it's one of her best lyrics to date. Love her so much
Also, the MEANING of having a track five that is both a love letter and a heartbreak anthem TO HERSELF, instead of somebody else.... Brings me to tears every time. Loved the video, Ally💗💗
one thing I wanted to add about the “and I’m a monster on the hill” line from Anti-Hero. The phrase “over the hill” means no longer young and attractive (literally meaning that on the line graph of a woman’s age vs her beauty, she is past the peak of attractiveness and her looks will only decline with age which…gross…) I took the line to mean Taylor is metaphorically standing on this hill, staring down the declining road. She, like most women, fears she is passing her “peak” and will be seen as less and less attractive as she grows older - compared to the desirable “sexy baby” on the other side of that hill.
@ dosesandmimoses This is just a thought but maybe because a hill is like a peak so over the hill is like past your peak, and over the hill it would in theory propably go downhill so they are saying her prime is over potentially?
I'm kind of a new swiftie and I love watching these deep dives because then I can go and listen to the songs from a new kind of perspective, and maybe fall in love with them in a new way when I realize things I havent before
my interpretation of the rubies line in "maroon", was that she gave up the part of herself that she later got back in "bejeweled." bc despite thinking that she lost a part of herself to that relationship that she thought she might never get back, after the relationship ended, she realized that she was still "bejeweled" and that that part of her was still there after all. and maybe she used rubies in particular to just tie into the red theme of "maroon." great video as always!!
Ally said it’s a challenge and I am here for it! Lavender haze: I’m damned if I do give a damn what people say Maroon: The lips I used to call home so scarlet, it was maroon Anti-hero: I should not be left to my own devices, they come with prices and vices Snow on the beach: Can this be a real thing, can it? Yoyok: Everything you lose is a step you take Midnight rain: He wanted a bride, I was making my own name Question: Does it ever feel like everything’s just like second best after that meteor strike? Vigilante shit: I don’t start shit but I can tell you how it ends Bejewled: What’s a girl gonna do? A diamond’s gotta shiiiiiiine Labyrinth: I thought the plane was going down. How’d you turn it back around? Karma: Trick me once, trick me twice. Don’t you know that cash ain’t the only price? It’s coming back around Sweet nothing: To you I can admit that I’m just too soft for all of it Mastermind: And now you’re mine. It was all my design The great war: And maybe it’s the past that’s talking, screaming from the crypt, telling me to punish you for things you never did. So i justified it Paris: Romance is not dead if you keep it just yours High Infidelity: You know there’s many different ways that you can kill the one you love. The slowest way is never loving them enough Glitch: We were supposed to be just friends whchsh (it says it all, can’t argue): Give me back my girlhood it was mine first Dear reader: Never take advice from someone who’s falling apart Hits different: Movin' on was always easy for me to do. It hits different 'cause it's you upd important message karma is her boyfriend
Ally wait!!! You talking about Anti-Hero has made me have a realisation. When you said that only Taylor would include a beauty and the beast reference, I suddenly realised 'tale as old as time' is not the only reference - she also more subtly references it in the second verse because everybody is a sexy baby (beauty/the other people in the town) and she's the monster on the hill (beast). And also! A lot of the lyrics do invoke beauty and the beast imagery - like the mirror and 'tea time' and 'all of the people I've ghosted stand there in the room' (the enchanted objects are kind of ghost-like and they were cursed because of the prince/beast) and 'pierced through the heart but never killed' (beast was pierced in the back but still), and even the stuff about worrying about someone leaving and being alone and life losing its meaning for the last time. Plus also the beast is literally an anti-hero. It's actually so beauty and the beast...I am in awe of her mind.
It's so clear to me now that "exile ends" in bejeweled is now referring to her relationship with Joe being like exile(there were so many signs ) ending, so now she can shine.
I was listening to a place in this world when I realised smt... A place in this world : I'm all alone, I'm on my on and that's all I know YOYOK : Your on your own kid yeah you can face this, your on your own kid, you always have been She is such a mastermind!
When I hear the bridge of YOYOK i think of how in Miss Americana she talked about losing the Grammy for RED and never wanting to feel that again. With that drive in mind she made 1989 and became the first female artist to win the AotY Grammy. "Blood sweat and tears" is all the work that went into that album and "something they can't take away" is the honor of that Grammy
She was not even close to the first woman to win the album of the year grammy, what are you even talking about? She was the first solo female artist to win it twice, but the first woman to win it was judy fucking garland in the 1960's. I know we all idolize taylor but let's not just literally make up facts to make her seem more than she is.
words seriously cannot express how much i love songs maroon, snow on the beach, would've could've should've, and hits different. i need this songs to take my soul -- i highly recommend wearing headphones and turning up to volume to FULL for literally every single song on midnights.
I was born in 2009 and I was introduced to Taylor when I was really young I started really getting in to Taylor when I was about 5 and I bought a 1989 karaoke CD and that was the start. I am so happy to be able to experience her music with everyone else and there is so many other artists out there but Taylor is obviously number one. I love how with being a fan of Taylor we are always full, she doesn't stop making music for 10 years she shoves our little faces full with new songs, albums, and lyrics alike. I am just so proud to be a swiftie and your videos make me appreciate it even more. I love everything you do keep it going!
I was also born in 2009 but didnt get into her music until about summer 2022. But i do remember jamming out to shake it off in the car after swim practice as a little kid 😂
Girl, please make more of these deep dives! I’m obsessed with your thought process and the way you explain everything. Thank you for everything you do for us! ❤
In question in the first chorus when she sings “then what did you do” the “I remember” plays very softly in the background. Also “you painted all my nights I colour I’ve searched for since”, connects to, “I took polaroid of us and discovered the rest of the world was black-and-white, but we were in screaming colour” Her brain
This video was just over an hour long and at the end I thought, "it's over already?" - I could honestly listen to you discuss Taylor Swift (or anything for that matter) for hours. I love your interpretations of the songs - there was so much that I had not thought about. Thanks for another great video Ally x
I think of that “I feel you no matter what, the rubies that I gave up” lyric being her saying that even though the relationship fell apart for good reasons (rust between telephones, disappointing carnations, etc.), that she still feels and remembers the loss of the best/shiniest parts of it (rubies).
Clean:You're still all over me Like a wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore Olivia (HS):This isn't the stain of a red wine, I'm bleeding love Maroon:The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me
Also the fact that maroon and Trouble by Harry (unreleased) both have lyrics about not wearing shoes! And in Trouble Harry sings “you showed me that 13 can be good” and “you know I’m trouble, i’m trouble with you” (I know this video is about Taylor but I had to point it out)
One thing to consider about "no one wanted to play with me as a little kid" in Mastermind is that it can also be connected to her as an adult and no one wanting to "play with her" during the 2016 drama, since that's around the time they met and were getting to know each other. So this connects to how she felt the need to create this masterplan to get him to like her for who she is, since her reputation was tarnished, but he didn't think that was necessary and he liked her regardless of it all but played along the masterplan anyways. I also don't necessarily think that Mastermind cancels out the other songs. Both can exist and be true in their own way. I think that paper rings and invisible string are the fate that brought them together to meet in the first place, but mastermind was what happened after once she realized that she wanted to be with him. She did say she went home and stalked him on the internet after meeting, which probably proves that's when her whole plan started. She's so funny for that, I love it haha.
I fell in love with Taylor Swift when I was 17 and she was only on MySpace… loved her ever since. [that’s honestly my biggest flex these days] So last week when my 14 year old daughter told us we’re not allowed to talk to her if her AirPods are in bc she was listening to every single Taylor Swift song, in order, to rate it. I nearly died at the overwhelming pride that was absolutely BEAMING out of me! We also attend the Reputations concerts every single night- performed by my other daughter, she’s 4. My husband has recently become a Swiftie, which took 12 years but he’s fully in now I just wanted to share this with other super fans bc no one else could appreciate it haha!
Snow on the beach is in my top 5. It is so good. I know people are disappointed Lana isn’t in it more that I think it had clouded their judgment. I went into this song with no expectations and I’m in love. The production is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. Her voice is so beautiful. Lana’s backing vocals are beautiful. The sound and the feeling the song gives just make this song absolutely incredible. I don’t get the hate.
@@AllySheehan Lana did an interview where she says she did the whole second verse! She's just really good at mimicking voices and mimicked Taylor's voice for the second verse. Listening with that in mind, I can definitely tell it's Lana with her enunciation and her vibrato. I love both versions but the first version is magical!
two challenges for y'all 💖 1. be my friend on instagram: instagram.com/agirlnamedally 2. leave a comment with ONE lyric/line per song that you think sums up the entire song
Omg I love a challenge. Lavender haze: I just wanna stay in that lavender haze. Maroon: And I wake with your memory over me That's a real fucking legacy to leave Anti-hero: I should not be left to my own devices They come with prices and vices I end up in crisis Snow on the beach: Can this be a real thing? Can it? You're On Your Own, Kid: I gave my blood, sweat, and tears for this Midnight rain: And I never think of him Except on midnights like this Question: Can I ask you a question? Vigilante Shit: I don't start shit, but I can tell you how it ends Bejewled: What's a girl gonna do? A diamond's gotta shine Labyrinth: I thought the plane was going down How'd you turn it right around? Karma: Karma's a relaxing thought Aren't you envious that for you it's not? Sweet Nothing: All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing Mastermind: It was all my design 'Cause I'm a mastermind The Great War: I vow I will always be yours 'Cause we survived the Great War Bigger Than The Whole Sky: You were bigger than the whole sky Paris: No, I didn't see the news 'Cause we were somewhere else High Infidelity: Do I really have to tell you how he brought me back to life? Glitch: We were supposed to be just friends Would've, Could've, Should've: The tomb won't close Stained glass windows in my mind I regret you all the time Dear reader: Never take advice from someone who’s falling apart Hits different: It hits different 'cause it's you
Ok so rep is my favourite album so I did it ...Ready For It?: Are you ready for it? End Game: I wanna be your end game I Did Something Bad: They say I did something bad Then why's it feel so good? Don't Blame Me: Don't blame me, love made me crazy Delicate: My reputation's never been worse, so He must like me for me Look What You Made Me Do: Ok there's like 3 separate lyrics I would say sum up this song so 1. The world moves on, another day another drama, drama But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma 2. I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me 3. I'm sorry The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now Why? Oh, 'cause she's dead So It Goes...: I'm yours to keep And I'm yours to lose Gorgeous: You're so cool, it makes me hate you so much Getaway Car: You were driving the getaway car We were flying, but we'd never get far King Of My Heart: And all at once, you're all I want I'll never let you go Dancing With Our Hands Tied: People started talking, putting us through our paces I knew there was no one in the world who could take it Dress: I don't want you like a best friend This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things: Did you think I wouldn't hear all the things you said about me? Call It What You Want: Nobody's heard from me for months I'm doing better than I ever was New Year's Day: Please don't ever become a stranger Whose laugh I could recognise anywhere
As a baby swiftie thank you SO much for creating these videos and being so welcoming to the Fandom 😭 You make listening to Taylor more enjoyable. Last night I listened to Labyrinth and your analysis of the different ways she says "oh no, I'm falling in love... etc" just made it hit SO much harder. Every piece of a song I learn through your channel makes me appreciate it so much more, as a fellow deeply sentimental and emotional gal 😂❤
My best friend moved to another country last week. Listening to you talking about YOYOK and how you felt about some friendships made me feel less alone. Thank you for that.
High Infidelity, Mastermind, Sweet Nothing, and Hits Different are literally 4 of my top 10-15 Taylor swift songs of all time, they’re just so perfect and make me so happy
Your love and appreciation for Anti-Hero makes me SO happy. It's my favorite song on the album, she gave us so much to unpack with it and it's funny how some people still can't see it. I appreciate you!
Born To Die is Lana Del Rey's first album and also truly iconic. There's not a song I don't love on that album. But if I had to pick a few that I think you should listen to they would be "Born To Die," "Off to the Races," "Blue Jeans," "Video Games," and "Dark Paradise"
I NEVER GOT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN KARMA AND I DID SOMETHING BAD BEFORE!!! I'm baffled right now, and I cannot unhear it! That is the coolest thing I've heard someone point out about this album! PS - Snow on the Beach is actually a really pretty song! Part of me feels like people don't like it because they're expecting more Lana Del Ray than what was actually given to us. But Snow on the Beach is very underrated IMO
No, because the whole " her revealing this vulnerable thing that she thins is the worst thing ever and him just smiling at her cus he knew the entire time" thing in Mastermind is exactly like "and i scream for whatever its worth, I LOVE YOU AINT THAT THE WORST THING YOU EVER HEARD" and "HE LOOKS UP GRINNING LIKE A DEVIL" from Cruel Summer whattt
Also, I live in Spain where Taylor is very known but not necessarily one of the top artists, and today in English class my teacher (who’s also a swiftie) made a listening out of yoyok so I already knew the lyrics 😍😍😍
I’ve listened to taylor since I was 4 (between fearless and speak now) (yes, I’m the younger sibling of a major swiftie could you tell)and Midnights is my favorite album. It’s so fresh and special and I feel like it is truly an inside look into Taylor’s mind because she’s sharing her deeper fears and feelings. (Ex. Anti hero, You’re Losing Me)
The lyric that sums up each song: LH - I been under scrutiny, you handle it beautifully M - The carnations you had thought were roses, that’s us (this might be my favorite lyric on the album but there are SO many perfect ones) AH - I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror SOTB - You wanting me tonight feels impossible YOYOK - Still the yearning stays MR - But for him it’s every day Q…? - You painted all my nights a color I have searched for since VS - I don’t start it, but I can tell you how it ends B - And I miss you, but I miss sparkling L - Oh no, I’m falling in love again K - Ask me why so many fade but I’m still here SN - Outside they’re push and shoving, you’re in the kitchen humming (this is me crying) M - No one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since HD - It hits different ‘cause it’s you TGW - It was war, it wasn’t fair, and we will never go back BTTHS - You were more than just a short time P - Romance is not dead if you keep it just yours HI - I was dancing around, dancing around it G - I thought we had no chance WCS - Memories feel like weapons, and now that I know, I wish you’d left me wondering DR - You should find another guiding light, but I shine so bright
Hey Ally, I just wanted to say something to what you mentioned about your channel growing and how scared you are about that sometimes. I think I found you in the exact time that you meant and I appreciate you so much. Your videos feel like a safe space to me aswell and I love seeing someone being so excited about music and movies and not being afraid to show it. There is a lot of fakeness on the internet but with you it‘s never the case. I think that‘s the reason why you don‘t have to be afraid that other people find you. Bad people get bored by realness and vulnerability in the end. Just keep on going💕 thank you and have a nice day!
@@AllySheehanDo it in a way that doesn't offend people 😭 bcz comeback be here- very first night- ikywt - this love - OOTW - IWYW- Style - Clean- perfect- two ghosts- him (Harry unreleased) trouble (Harry unreleased) Is way too iconic to be forgotten.
Does anyone else think the bridge in Vigilante Shit sounds witchy? Like she’s casting a spell, I always think about “they’re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one” when hearing it ❤️🔥
IM SO SO SO REAAAAADY!!!!!!! 🙌🏼💖 Ally I can’t believe you’ve NEVER listened to Lana before! Born To Die is literally one of the best albums of all time, if you’re listening to just 1 Lana album, let it be this one✨💓
I know that sweet nothing is most likely about joe but the first time I heard it I thought about her mom, with the childhood references and her resorting back to her mom whos always at home in the kitchen making her feel safe and then the "they say the end is coming" being about her cancer I know it's not what it's about but a part of me still thinks it might be and it breaks my heart.
Omg your take is so thorough, thank you for sharing and doing the difficult detective work. I would add one point to your antihero take (14:20ish) - as someone who has also recovered from an eating disorder - I think antihero, peace, cruel summer, clean, archer, can all be examples of the multifaceted aspects of eating disorders. Lots in recovery use metaphor of ed’s as manipulative and abusive ex’s. So in these songs the metaphor about a romantic partner or her fame can also refer to the way her ed talks to her like a controlling and abusive s/o. But of course the songs can also be just as easily applied to literal relationships or fame. It’s all a hot take😂
Nice video! I really like your commentary on the album. I'm sorry you couldn't get tickets for her show! Snow on the Beach was one of the most popular and streamed songs of the album though, people loved it even if they were disappointed by the lack of Lana. And the hype over it just got bigger with the release of SOTB ft. More Lana. If you want to chek out Lana's music here are some recommendations: Video Games, Ride, Black Beauty, Music To Watch Boys To, Cherry, Cinnamon Girl, Dark But Just A Game, Arcadia, A&W. (Just a glance of each album)
i just love your videos (especially Taylor themed) and this analysis is golden 💫 it really helped me understand the lyrics and references, for example i thought maroon was about jake 👀 great job and thank youuuuuu! 💙✨
I thought so too!! Some of the lyrics illustrate the ATW short film for me… dancing in New York I envisioned the kitchen/refrigerator scene and when he breaks it off with her he’s literally sobbing with his head in his hands. Standing hollow eyed in the hallway reminds me of The Last Time. Then rust growing between the phones further cements it to me that it’s about Jake. ATW has a phone lyric, WANEGBT has a phone lyric AND makes a cameo in the music video, Almost Do does as well, etc.
I would SO SO SO love if you did some of Lana's discography as reaction videos. Her lyricism, while totally different from Taylor's, is similarly the most prominent and impressive thing about her. There are so many crossover fans of the 2 of them that I think you would pull in massive views. I would say start at the beginning with Born To Die, but if you don't wanna commit yet to more than 1 album, I would say out of all her albums go with Norman Fucking Rockwell. It's kind of like her Folklore. It's just absolutely stunning musically and the songwriting is out of this world. Also produced by Jack Antonoff
From “the mark you saw on my collarbone” I immediately thought about OOTW “Remember when you hit the breaks too soon?” and the seatbelt leaving a mark from stopping so suddenly
I appreciate you sharing that about being vulnerable and putting yourself out there online and in life. This is something that I know I am going to have to face once I start making art and trying to connect with people online and in person more. Its really scary you are not alone 💖
I would just like to say that in her entire discography 82 of Taylor’s songs or at least the context behind them have happened in my life and seven of them are from midnights
I feel like enchanted and mastermind could be some sort of parallels! Like she took control instead of just wishing and fantasizing about being with that person. Just a thought. Love watching all of your videos!!❤
@@AllySheehan I feel like since you've been such a huge fan from the beginning you have this treasure trove of knowledge to be able to connect things and you pick up on things I would never have. ❤️
Hi Ally, love your reaction. I can't help but feel this might well be Taylor's way of saying goodbye. So many lyrics just for her real fans, so vulnerable. I could be wrong but it feels like a farewell. She may be planning on going to that place where poets went to die. If so what a piece of work to leave us with.
My actual ranking of midnights (change every day lol) : 1. You’re on your own, kid 2. Would’ve could’ve should’ve 3. Maroon 4. Hits different 5. Mastermind 6. Sweet Nothing 7. High infidelity 8. Snow on the beach 9. Anti-hero 10. Question…? 11. Bejewelled 12. Lavender haze 13. Karma 14. Bigger than the whole sky 15. Labyrinth 16. The Great War 17. Vigilante shit 18. Midnight rain 19. Paris 20. Dear reader 21. Glitch
shes only cryptic and Machiavellian cuz she cares. her music is deeply connected to some special magical people and you are one of them. midnights came out 3 days after my dad died. bigger than the whole sky is about my aborted sister from same father. Taylors music is magical
Thank you Ally for stating the obvious at 16:53. My mom and I couldn’t stand how horrible the media and the general population would treat her and slut shame her for dating people just like any other girl her age would! I love your Swiftie videos! My sister also got to meet Taylor when she was in her Kennedy/Red era and she stopped to take photos with her when she was getting coffee! These are the stories and experiences that make her so beloved and why us as her fans always rush to defend her! Love hearing your thoughts and easter egg talks as someone who has also been listening since her debut!
I’m really wanting to learn all the ins and out of Taylor’s incredible mind. (I guess I’m a baby swiftie? trying to learn all the things y’all have learned over the years). So I truly appreciate finding your channel tonight while falling down the rabbit hole. :)
Here's the way I interpret "rubies that I gave up" Maroon is like a darker, deeper, more mature red, it's red, but not quite red. Red is a chaotic color, when you think of it there's many different things that can go through your head, love, danger, hate, crazy. Red encompasses every emotion she felt in red so well. Red is chaotic love, gold is true love, and lavender is that "he's the one" love. Rubies that I gave up, the precious chaos I gave up. I gave up too much to be with you, and this seems like that burning red has burnt out, giving us maroon. So scarlet and bright, that it died too quickly, and faded to maroon.
that feeling when i hear the beginning of lavender haze it’s full of the beginning of a new chapter of my life. i’m FOR SURE a side B girly and my favorite are probably 3rd yoyok 2nd labyrinth 1st sweet nothing. thank you for the amazing video ally
I wanted to thank you for mentioning tolerate it in relationship with bejeweled because as soon as I heard bejeweled I felt like it's the perspective of the woman from tolerate it after she took the dagger in her and removed it. In tolerate it we have "I sit and listen: I polish plates until they gleam and glisten" but in bejeweled we have the repeated line line of "I polish up real nice" and that can be a line about herself but also an "remember when when I used to do that for you?". Plus the whole difference between "I wait by the door like I'm just a kid" and " by the way, I'm going out tonight", it seems like she is telling us and him that I am not waiting anymore for you to show up. The similarity in meaning of the basement in bejeweled and the footnotes in tolerate it, also the parallel between the band asks me if I have a man and I say I do not remember and drawing hearts in the byline makes me feel like is the same women that escaped the toxic relationship.
Oh nooo I just saw your outro and how you’re fearful that people will find you and disturb your comfy zone of wonderful people you’ve surrounded yourself with. I’m very happy to have found you in the last couple days and love hearing your excitement and deep dives. I definitely thought Janet from rocky horror and thought of the innocent song written for Kanye nestled within vigilante sh!t. Sending much love from Canada and have no intention of disrupting your safe zone! 💜
Midnights is such an amazing album! A combination of all the best aspects of her past albums, and this stands along with Reputation as being one of my favorite albums for her!
@@AllySheehan gosh it's so difficult to rank her albums, cause I just love them all so much! I think it would be something like this - 1: Reputation 2: Midnights 3: Evermore 4: Folklore 5: Red 6: Lover 7: 1989 8: Fearless 9: Speak Now 10: Taylor Swift
@@AllySheehan haha I'm sorry, it's just not my favorite from her. But for such a great album to be lower on my list speaks to how amazing all of her works are. Long Live is one of my favorite Taylor songs though!
Every time I listen to the lyric “the rubies that I gave up,” all I hear is “the roofies that I gave up,” which is obviously wrong and means something entirely different, but I can’t un-hear it. It’s another “Come back to me Eli” and “Starbucks lovers” moment, and I will be singing “roofies” until the end of time.
on the "tea time" line, i think it's also a reference on how before kim leaked the edited phone call on 2016, kendall, who was supposed to be her friend, posted a picture with the caption "it's tea time"
For me the YOYOK bridge is like her rapidly listing every high and low of hers almost like blurting it all out and then there's a release at the end and midnight rain is so the way i loved you!!!
Dude. Ally. I just felt like some reflection tonight and decided to watch this. I just got to the part where you were adorably gushing over “Karma is the guy on the screen coming straight home to me” and just kept shouting at my TV for you to just wait because it gets sooooo much better! Also, you should 100% reread your notes from this video if you haven’t. Knowing what we know now makes all of this so much better and even more impressive (if that’s possible). Thanks for bringing me sunshine! ❤😘
@@AllySheehan so I’m just on a Midnights bender at this point, but I also want you to know that your response/reaction to Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve healed a part of me and made it okay for me to actually feel my feelings around some horrific things I also experienced at 19. Thank you so much for creating your safe landing spot on this corner of the internet. It means more to me than you know 💕
I was reading through the comments of YOYOK and one of them said “This song if for the background friends, the third wheels, the invited last-minute as an afterthought, the never chosen to be a bridesmaid/groomsman, the shoulder-to-cry-on but never reciprocated, the lonely people-pleasers, and the eternally quiet kids afraid of taking up too much space or talking too long too loudly” and I feel like the perfectly summed up the vibe of YOYOK.
yep ouch ouch ouchhhhh that feels exactly right
Woah. 😐 perfectly put
Wait. I just noticed that the Daisy Mae comic is called Daisy Mae and Li’l Abner in Paper Dolls… for those that don’t know, John Mayer wrote a song called Paper dolls that was (allegedly 🙄) about Taylor. This is the synopsis of the comic:
Beautiful Daisy Mae Scragg was hopelessly in love with Li’l Abner through the entire course of the 43 year run of Al Capp’s comic strip.

Omg that actually make so much sense. Well worded.
The way I FORGOT about the "Maybe she should write a song about being the problem" thing and you said that and it was like PTSD flashbacks. She's so brilliant omg
RIGHT?? to me that song fully encapsulates that entire era and how much she internalised it
Back to December said hi
@@_zander1025 Karma wins again, lol. Now everyone knows what a jerk ED is.
Y'ALL the fact i had to let MULTIPLE men at apple support watch this video through to help me find the problem and fix it 😅😅😅 Let's just say I am educating the masses and also TRULY humbled by them seeing my dance moves.
I bet some of them are swifties now. Ma'am you're doing the lord's work 😂
Iconic
😂😂😂😂 This is so funny but at the same time it great you're educating the masses haha
So iconic of you! 😂
Like there is such a wholesomeness to hearing her excitement about her relationship and it makes me positively giddy
that's soooooo cute AGH!
This album is about Joe and his issues with him and she’s talking to her fans to let us know.
Mastermind is definitely for the fans because she makes us go crazy
Doesn't it also sound like braging on Mastermind? Like, she knows shes a bad bitch.
I totally agree.
Probably other people have said this, but this album feels like therapy, like when you make progress in therapy and understand your insecurities and regrets and then turn them into growth
Especially when you think about her ending it with dear reader 😭😭
I love that so much 🥹🥹
That's not a theory but a way of living.
This just fucked me up!!
one thing I wanted to add about the “and I’m a monster on the hill” line from Anti-Hero.
The phrase “over the hill” means no longer young and attractive (literally meaning that on the line graph of a woman’s age vs her beauty, she is past the peak of attractiveness and her looks will only decline with age which…gross…)
I took the line to mean Taylor is metaphorically standing on this hill, staring down the declining road. She, like most women, fears she is passing her “peak” and will be seen as less and less attractive as she grows older - compared to the desirable “sexy baby” on the other side of that hill.
woww yes i love that interpretation so much!
May I ask why you think over the hill means no longer attractive?
@ dosesandmimoses
This is just a thought but maybe because a hill is like a peak so over the hill is like past your peak, and over the hill it would in theory propably go downhill so they are saying her prime is over potentially?
I'm kind of a new swiftie and I love watching these deep dives because then I can go and listen to the songs from a new kind of perspective, and maybe fall in love with them in a new way when I realize things I havent before
can relaate. this album is literally the best thing i ever heard
my interpretation of the rubies line in "maroon", was that she gave up the part of herself that she later got back in "bejeweled." bc despite thinking that she lost a part of herself to that relationship that she thought she might never get back, after the relationship ended, she realized that she was still "bejeweled" and that that part of her was still there after all. and maybe she used rubies in particular to just tie into the red theme of "maroon."
great video as always!!
loved this!!

Also it kinda sounds like "Taylor's old as time"
you’re a MASTERMIND
@@91fallings That's all Taylor!!
Yeah the first time I heard it I thought she was literally saying “Taylor’s old as time” 🤣
It's so clear to me now that "exile ends" in bejeweled is now referring to her relationship with Joe being like exile(there were so many signs ) ending, so now she can shine.
I was listening to a place in this world when I realised smt...
A place in this world : I'm all alone, I'm on my on and that's all I know
YOYOK : Your on your own kid yeah you can face this, your on your own kid, you always have been
She is such a mastermind!
also
Mean: someday i'll be big enough so you can't hit me
Anti-Hero: too big to hang out :(
When I hear the bridge of YOYOK i think of how in Miss Americana she talked about losing the Grammy for RED and never wanting to feel that again.
thank you love!! i really don't want to upset anyone else by making more but i'm so glad you enjoyed this one
In question in the first chorus when she sings “then what did you do” the “I remember” plays very softly in the background. Also “you painted all my nights I colour I’ve searched for since”, connects to, “I took polaroid of us and discovered the rest of the world was black-and-white, but we were in screaming colour”
Her brain
also "you showed me colors I can't see with anything else" omggg
lol i just got to the part of the video where she references that my b
This video was just over an hour long and at the end I thought, "it's over already?" - I could honestly listen to you discuss Taylor Swift (or anything for that matter) for hours. I love your interpretations of the songs - there was so much that I had not thought about. Thanks for another great video Ally x
oh that means so much to me!! 🥹 so glad you enjoyed :)
I think of that “I feel you no matter what, the rubies that I gave up” lyric being her saying that even though the relationship fell apart for good reasons (rust between telephones, disappointing carnations, etc.), that she still feels and remembers the loss of the best/shiniest parts of it (rubies).
Clean:You're still all over me
Like a wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore
Olivia (HS):This isn't the stain of a red wine, I'm bleeding love
Maroon:The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me
Also the fact that maroon and Trouble by Harry (unreleased) both have lyrics about not wearing shoes! And in Trouble Harry sings “you showed me that 13 can be good” and “you know I’m trouble, i’m trouble with you” (I know this video is about Taylor but I had to point it out)
YESSSS
My husband has recently become a Swiftie, which took 12 years but he’s fully in now
I just wanted to share this with other super fans bc no one else could appreciate it haha!

I don’t get the hate.
thank you i (obviously) completely agree!!
@@AllySheehan Lana did an interview where she says she did the whole second verse! She's just really good at mimicking voices and mimicked Taylor's voice for the second verse. I love Snow on the Beach. It’s such a soothing and pretty song.
I agree!! So lovely to hear

Also, I live in Spain where Taylor is very known but not necessarily one of the top artists, and today in English class my teacher (who’s also a swiftie) made a listening out of yoyok so I already knew the lyrics 😍😍😍
cant wait for part 2, coz the first 3am track is top tier for me, and the last track is just underrated af :(

(Ex. Anti hero, You’re Losing Me)
The lyric that sums up each song:
LH - I been under scrutiny, you handle it beautifully
M - The carnations you had thought were roses, that’s us (this might be my favorite lyric on the album but there are SO many perfect ones)
AH - I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror
SOTB - You wanting me tonight feels impossible
YOYOK - Still the yearning stays
MR - But for him it’s every day
Q…? - You painted all my nights a color I have searched for since
VS - I don’t start it, but I can tell you how it ends
B - And I miss you, but I miss sparkling
L - Oh no, I’m falling in love again
K - Ask me why so many fade but I’m still here
SN - Outside they’re push and shoving, you’re in the kitchen humming (this is me crying)
M - No one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since
HD - It hits different ‘cause it’s you
TGW - It was war, it wasn’t fair, and we will never go back
BTTHS - You were more than just a short time
P - Romance is not dead if you keep it just yours
HI - I was dancing around, dancing around it
G - I thought we had no chance
WCS - Memories feel like weapons, and now that I know, I wish you’d left me wondering
DR - You should find another guiding light, but I shine so bright
Patiently waiting for the Australian tour announcements!! Maroon was my favourite on first listen and it has not changed spots since!
Listening a year later and midnights is still one of my fav Taylor albums. This is where she started not giving a fuck and I love it 🫶🏻

@@laurabolanos9712 your explanation is much better, i just thought of the song „red” and how it’s about jake so maroon must be also 🫠
ahhhhhh the rainbow on your hair at 34:32 is so majestic
aww thank you i love it!!
From “the mark you saw on my collarbone” I immediately thought about OOTW “Remember when you hit the breaks too soon?” and the seatbelt leaving a mark from stopping so suddenly
yesssss love that!!
The OOTW lyrics were about a snowmobile accident, not a car accident. There aren't seatbelts on snowmobiles.
Snow at the Beach was my favorite when the album dropped. 😅 Honestly there are so many great songs on this album
I appreciate you sharing that about being vulnerable and putting yourself out there online and in life. This is something that I know I am going to have to face once I start making art and trying to connect with people online and in person more. Its really scary you are not alone 💖
thank you so much
I would just like to say that in her entire discography 82 of Taylor’s songs or at least the context behind them have happened in my life and seven of them are from midnights
I feel like enchanted and mastermind could be some sort of parallels! Like she took control instead of just wishing and fantasizing about being with that person. Just a thought. Love watching all of your videos!!❤
You're so good at analyzing her songs. I love it.
wow thank you so much!! this has always been a favourite thing to do, i think she has encouraged us fans to analyse it since very early days
@@AllySheehan I feel like since you've been such a huge fan from the beginning you have this treasure trove of knowledge to be able to connect things and you pick up on things I would never have. ❤️
@@AllySheehan ok, and one more thing! When you said the haze mentioned in The Great War could be a call back to Lavender Haze. 🤯
This was so interesting to watch, I missed so many things! You are adorable! I love your pink eyeshadow ❤️
thank you so much!! i love how we all pick up on different things :)

shes only cryptic and Machiavellian cuz she cares. her music is deeply connected to some special magical people and you are one of them. midnights came out 3 days after my dad died. bigger than the whole sky is about my aborted sister from same father. Taylors music is magical
Happy 1 year of midnights! I’m a baby swiftie that is forever grateful for your deep dives
welcome!!!
Girl! I cry every time I hear Mastermind…. It says so much on so many levels! My #1
I’m really wanting to learn all the ins and out of Taylor’s incredible mind. (I guess I’m a baby swiftie? trying to learn all the things y’all have learned over the years). So I truly appreciate finding your channel tonight while falling down the rabbit hole. :)
Would love if Ally revisited Midnights post TTPD!
This video made my day! I love to hear your thoughts about every Taylor song 🥹🤍
thank you so much!
This is the best breakdown vid I’ve seen for midnights!!! ✨✨
omg thank you!! i haven't had a chance to watch any but i'm so excited to now
I love this video.
I love you.
This is so great, in so many ways. I can't cover them all at the moment.
Thank you, Ally. 💜
Thank you so much!
Here's the way I interpret "rubies that I gave up"
Maroon is like a darker, deeper, more mature red, it's red, but not quite red.
Watching this now and hearing you talk so much about her and Joe is hard
that feeling when i hear the beginning of lavender haze it’s full of the beginning of a new chapter of my life. i’m FOR SURE a side B girly and my favorite are probably 3rd yoyok 2nd labyrinth 1st sweet nothing. thank you for the amazing video ally
YES I TOTALLY FEEL THE SAME
I felt that like " l've been dressing for revenge " is a princess Diana moment (bc of her iconic revenge dress)
totally agree!
I feel like 1989 was a full Breakout to the pop scene and this was proving that she has mastered it😂
I wanted to thank you for mentioning tolerate it in relationship with bejeweled because as soon as I heard bejeweled I felt like it's the perspective of the woman from tolerate it after she took the dagger in her and removed it. The similarity in meaning of the basement in bejeweled and the footnotes in tolerate it, also the parallel between the band asks me if I have a man and I say I do not remember and drawing hearts in the byline makes me feel like is the same women that escaped the toxic relationship.
hey ally!! I love you and your content so much. You've helped me connect to Taylor so much
I genuinely don’t know what to say, thank you so much!
I completely agree! Would love to know your album rankings
@@AllySheehan gosh it's so difficult to rank her albums, cause I just love them all so much! I think it would be something like this -
1: Reputation
2: Midnights
3: Evermore
4: Folklore
5: Red
6: Lover
7: 1989
8: Fearless
9: Speak Now
10: Taylor Swift
@@ethan1969 omg my favourite album second last??
@@AllySheehan haha I'm sorry, it's just not my favorite from her. But for such a great album to be lower on my list speaks to how amazing all of her works are. Long Live is one of my favorite Taylor songs though!
@@ethan1969 I'm glad we can agree on how superior long live is, it's one of my all time faves too
Every time I listen to the lyric “the rubies that I gave up,” all I hear is “the roofies that I gave up,” which is obviously wrong and means something entirely different, but I can’t un-hear it. It’s another “Come back to me Eli” and “Starbucks lovers” moment, and I will be singing “roofies” until the end of time.
Ultraviolence is an absolute must if you’re trying Lana… no skips
my fav swiftie channel fr ally >>>
on the "tea time" line, i think it's also a reference on how before kim leaked the edited phone call on 2016, kendall, who was supposed to be her friend, posted a picture with the caption "it's tea time"
Please do the rest of the songs. I absolutely love your take on the lyrics 😻
ahhh yes i need to rewatch this!! thank you so much for this comment
