the way people feel about that sexy slow down part of Maroon is the way I feel about Midnight Rain, that song just scratches my brain in the right place, I can't get enough of it. Instrumental after the opening chorus always reminds me of the sound older movie projector would make, kind of what we see in Style MV with images being projected onto the wall. The imagery it gives me is perrrrrfect: her sitting down on the floor of her room watching her life in pictures and contemplating of what was and what could've been. It's a definition of night time, city lights, lonely song and I LOVE IT SO MUCHHHHHHH

So it’s not exactly a tier, but my top 3 are definitely 1) Anti-Hero; because it’s such a vulnerable and open song, like you say, and as someone who constantly has insecurities about myself this song just really resonates with me. I cannot express enough how much “I’m the problem, it’s me” relates to how I feel so so often. This song is everything to me. 2) Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve; this one hits me so hard. It didn’t at first, but after a couple times of listening to it I realized…..Taylor and I are the same. I was 19, and I dated a grown man. That relationship ruined me, took a part of me, made me grow up faster than I should have. Not only that, but it was my first relationship, so it cut me even deeper. “Give me back my girlhood” will forever be the most relatable lyric in the song for me. Whenever I play the song, I picture myself screaming that line to my ex, because he took away my girlhood, my innocence, the happier parts of me. I gave him everything and he gave me nothing. WCS describes my first relationship, and the aftermath I feel because of it. I am in a happy relationship now of 2 1/2 years, but that doesn’t mean the cuts from my previous relationship are healed or erased. I will forever thank Taylor for WCS ❤️🩹 And finally, 3) Bejeweled; it’s my hype song, that makes me feel on top of the world. Anything and everything could bring me down, but in the end, I polish up nice, and I can still make the whole place shimmer 💖 the world can hurt me, but I’ll still come back sparkling ✨
I’m glad to be in the minority with you on liking “Snow on the Beach” it’s such a beautiful song and I had it on repeat when I first listened to Midnights. And I’m so happy you mentioned the lyric “life is emotionally abusive” I related to that a lot too 😂
Labyrinth is god tier for me. At first I thought it was too slow and it was actually my least favourite, BUT that 1 minute after the chorus towards the end of the song feels so surreal and ethereal, LITERALLY MAGICAL. one of my favs
Lavender haze is very god tier for me!!! It is one of my favorite songs in her discography!! The vibes it gives are just way too immaculate to not put on repeat all day and all night.
WCS makes me SCARED for speak now tv. it is honestly one of the best songs she’s ever written and while obvs WCS is reflecting on it, one can only imagine what she wrote in 2009
A lot of people hate Anti-Hero for being overplayed, but if you really listen to the lyrics you can see how open with u she is getting and how she is showing us her insecurities. a lot of people think the lyric “Sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby, and I’m a monster on the hill” is weird but I really think it means that she is insecure about her height. Yes, it was played so much because of the trend, and yes, it took me so many listens to start realizing that she was telling us so much. Thank you for recognizing that and not putting it super low because it’s overplayed by that trend!
Karma is my favourite song in the album.like “karma is a queen” “aren’t you envious that for you it’s not” “karma is the guy on the screen, coming straight home to meee!!!”
The distortion on Dear Reader always felt purposeful to me, like an ode to how unrecognizable and shiny she's become, and how distanced from anything real. Especially when she sings 'never take advice from someone who's fallen apart,' it sounds the exact opposite of someone who's broken. Makes it all the more of a punch to the gut since even one of her most vulnerable songs doesn't show her real self.
Same which is weird as if I had to describe my music taste, I would say I love 1989, debut, speak now pop-ish upbeat songs which you can dance to in your room. Snow on the beach is the complete opposite for me but I love it ❤❤

God Tier for me : The Great War. Midnight Rain. Mastermind. I also really love Labyrinth. The under tones to that song are amazing. When I first heard Great War I was OBSESSED. I kept picturing The Reputation Era. And how her and Joe probably went through alot right before that. With the media shaming her. The snake stuff. Then she rose from the ashes. And that entire song really felt like her War before the Reputation Era. Just beautiful! 😍

I feel like I would’ve liked it more on folklore, but not because folklore is my favorite album (cause it’s actually pretty low for me) but because it would’ve been more stripped down. It would’ve had maybe some nice relaxing piano and the reverb wouldn’t have been so intense. I feel like if she just played this live on piano I’d like it a lot more. But as is on the album, it’s a skip for me.
I think it would be better received on folklore cause it fits the mood of the album more chilled etc but in the middle of midnights it brings the energy down too much for me.
I absolutely love lavender haze, i'm a new swiftie and i haven't listened to all of her albums yet, but midnights might be my favourite so far. IT'S SO GOOD!!! It's the first album i've listened to fully and I literally want to listen to it every day. it is amazing!!!! I'm obsessed with basically every song and there have been a few that I didn't like at first but now I adore. I feel like that's a common theme with a lot of her songs, it's like a song may not be your favourite at the beginning, you may even hate it at first! & then you listen to it again and it's just so good. This list is basically what I would do, I love Maroon except LH did deserve to be higher!!! But you did save it where you put Karma ;)

Vigilante Sh I loved upon first listen and still! Labyrinth is, to me, the most underrated song on the album--the chorus got stuck in my head so quickly.
I completely agree with you on Mastermind and Snow on the Beach! I've adored them from the very beginning (Mastermind was even on my Spotify 2022 Wrapped playlist) and I need those two songs to get some love soon! But I must say.... I totally think Paris is about Joe and has become one of my faves on the album. I think the end of the song where she sings about actually being in Paris in an alleyway drinking champagne refers to when she did her City of Lover show in Paris and he was with her.
I was so scared YOYOK was gonna be jibbed of a good place, but when you put it in god tier, I screamed with excitement. YOYOK is my favourite song atm, its so relatable.

i think the production in “dear reader” is meant to mirror how the lyrics are about the vulnerability she shares with fans but how it’s still a parasocial relationship and she shouldn’t be as worshipped as she is. it’s vulnerability but you’re meant to hear how cultivated and curated that vulnerability is. it’s authentic and purposefully inauthentic. also i very much think the primary inspo for the song is “all eyes on me” by bo burnham.

Labyrinth is god tier for me. At first I thought it was too slow and it was actually my least favourite, BUT that 1 minute after the chorus towards the end of the song feels so surreal and ethereal, LITERALLY MAGICAL. one of my favs

A lot of people hate Anti-Hero for being overplayed, but if you really listen to the lyrics you can see how open with u she is getting and how she is showing us her insecurities. a lot of people think the lyric “Sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby, and I’m a monster on the hill” is weird but I really think it means that she is insecure about her height. Yes, it was played so much because of the trend, and yes, it took me so many listens to start realizing that she was telling us so much. Thank you for recognizing that and not putting it super low because it’s overplayed by that trend!

The distortion on Dear Reader always felt purposeful to me, like an ode to how unrecognizable and shiny she's become, and how distanced from anything real. Especially when she sings 'never take advice from someone who's fallen apart,' it sounds the exact opposite of someone who's broken. Makes it all the more of a punch to the gut since even one of her most vulnerable songs doesn't show her real self.
I personally took that like with anti hero as in a self depricating comment. She's the unreliable narrator of her story.

I totally agree with you about Snow on the Beach, if this song was on Folklore people would love It! I personally already do, It's a great song
I feel like I would’ve liked it more on folklore, but not because folklore is my favorite album (cause it’s actually pretty low for me) but because it would’ve been more stripped down. It would’ve had maybe some nice relaxing piano and the reverb wouldn’t have been so intense. I feel like if she just played this live on piano I’d like it a lot more. But as is on the album, it’s a skip for me.
i mean folklore for me had more guitar, piano, etc. It’s a bit different vibe than SOTB.
I think it would be better received on folklore cause it fits the mood of the album more chilled etc but in the middle of midnights it brings the energy down too much for me.
I absolutely love lavender haze, i'm a new swiftie and i haven't listened to all of her albums yet, but midnights might be my favourite so far. IT'S SO GOOD!!! It's the first album i've listened to fully and I literally want to listen to it every day. it is amazing!!!! I'm obsessed with basically every song and there have been a few that I didn't like at first but now I adore. I feel like that's a common theme with a lot of her songs, it's like a song may not be your favourite at the beginning, you may even hate it at first! & then you listen to it again and it's just so good. This list is basically what I would do, I love Maroon except LH did deserve to be higher!!! But you did save it where you put Karma ;)

Ranking is very difficult and this is such a great album. It takes time to realise which songs you're drawn to more than others. I have 6 top favourites so far. 1 Lavender Haze. 2 Labyrinth. 3 Maroon. 4. Sweet Nothing. 5 Bigger than the whole sky. 6 Paris. You can get an idea of my personality and where I'm at in my journey. A year late, but that instrumental sound in The Great War sounds kind of like a battle horn they’d use to signify the start of battle.
I totally think Paris is about Joe and has become one of my faves on the album. I think the end of the song where she sings about actually being in Paris in an alleyway drinking champagne refers to when she did her City of Lover show in Paris and he was with her.

i think the production in “dear reader” is meant to mirror how the lyrics are about the vulnerability she shares with fans but how it’s still a parasocial relationship and she shouldn’t be as worshipped as she is. it’s vulnerability but you’re meant to hear how cultivated and curated that vulnerability is. it’s authentic and purposefully inauthentic.
also i very much think the primary inspo for the song is “all eyes on me” by bo burnham.

BTTWS is one of the most emotional songs and so well done. Like Ronan and SYGB, it’s a skip for me unless I’m in a mood where I’m wanting to live in deep sadness, like after my dog died, which I realize is nothing like what these songs are about.
I watched this 13 hours after it was uploaded 💗 also: 8:21 I think she was talking about her badly when she said that, considering anti hero is about her body insecurities. Since she stated in miss Americana that she thought she was fat and also in the deleted scene of anti hero I’m pretty sure she was talking about her being insecure about her weight. It could also be about her height tho, I am 5’9 and I am sometimes insecure about my height but she is 5’11 and she was also supposed to look like a giant in the MV. That’s just what I think tho I could be wrong.

God tier for me is definitely Labyrinth haha Rep and Lover are my favorite alby, and this song is the connection point of those eras, as Joe helped her realized that the plane wasn't crashing, just turning around. It feels like her diary pages come to life. I do wish it was another verse or had a breakdown post bridge to really drive it home, but oh man it gives me chills with just how raw it is. The fact that the breathe lines were in her NYU speech - she wanted all young people to hear the mantra that helped her through her shitty time of everyone hating her. ❤️
