Although we're only talking 8 or 9 years ago, that's quite a bit of nostalgic footage there! I was a regular visitor to Rugby in this period, but only photographed the workings sadly. However i did film on the WCML from 1986-1997 and am gradually putting these movies on My Channel - quite a change in that period of course!
it's now been 9 years.... 2003 was 19 years ago and 2004 was 18... you can clearly see the camera quality rise from 360p in 2000 - 2003 to 8k in 2021/22!
Some good stuff there mate! The old Mark 3 sets are infinately more comfortable to travel on compared to pendos. Though showing my age a bit, I remember when they were all in 'Intercity' livery! Now they were good days!
I remember seeing these at Euston when i used to go London with my dad. I remember getting free travel on Silverlink aswell, but I dont recall traveling on it :) Nice video mate :)
Sweet you finally got to upload it! =-D Super vid m8! Some early Pendolino's and some great Loco-hauled action! Love it! =-D I'm guessing the reason that that 82 was the wrong way roud was cos it was on a stock move to Wembley and the 87 would take it back to Wembley at the end of its shift
As a regular commuter on the WCML it's funny seeing the Pendolinos brand new. I always forget just how old they are now although the interiors do look extremely 2002 haha. Great video!
The good old days were before privatisation! In BR days you could buy a ticket from any station to any other station wherever they were in Britain and pay for it even though the passenger may be hundreds of miles from where you are. Try that today! It was called a Silk arrangement, doubt any booking office has ever heard of it these days.
Leonard Sachs would have been delighted! Well done you for filming at the age of 8! Yes, I noticed the sparks near the beginning of the clip; if you want to see some real spark effects, download CHOO CHOO!!Plane's video "Trains at Reading in the Snow" 2.1.18 especially from 24'48" onwards and to a certain extent from 20'31" when the clip focuses on the Waterloo-bound platforms...
I remember when the Pendolinos had the zebra doors rather than the STUPID GREY DOORS that they had before they were bought by Avanti West Coast; at least the Voyagers still had them.
I don't like voyagers, they have become too common. its nice to see a vid on the west coat ML in its golden age with 90s and 86s pulling 12 coah trains!:)
The West Coast Mainline (London Euston, Birmingham, Wolverhampton etc) have been using brand new Pendelinos since like 2002 but yet the East Coast Mainline (Leeds, Sheffield, London King Cross) still use these trains but just rebranded.
@soundseeker63 I do understand what you mean, I used to love riding up and down on the mk3's and mk2's with my head out. But at the end of the day, its the busiest intercity mainline in the UK and for it to only be limited to 110 wasn't very good or practical really. I must say I do enjoy travelling on pendolino's they're smooth and reliable: But they are really common and therefore kind of boring. But I think they are bloody good at the routes they do!
This is rare footage! Seeing 47s, DVT, 87s, 1 HST (sad face), Pendolinos and Super Voyager all in one video! This is all that Virgin ever had! Can I use this video for another video I am putting together on West Coast Mainline History? I will credit you!
Not so fast! I know you posted this 7 months ago, but Virgin have until 29 April 2017, near when Crossrail opens, and South West Trains Franchise is due to end. In the diary!
The time when everything was boxy and British. Now every livery has changed to something bland in comparison. The only train that has remained the same in this montage is the Class 66.
Why virgin got rid of the Mk3 sets in favor of pendos and voyagers mystifies me to this day. They were not too old, 87s still work abroad and 90s weren't even half through their working life. Sure pendos are noticeably quicker, but I do not find them relaxing to travel in. In a mk3 you could guarantee a good view out and an almost silent, cool and airy atmosphere while the loco screams ahead of you. Not so now. 350s I like though, quick, smooth and spacious even if they look a bit fugly.

It's now 16 years 😲
Oh dear now this comment is 8 years old and 2003/04 was 17/16 years ago!

This is when the pendolinos are starting to appear and starting to replace the loco hauled ac locos

Today all of the 321s are no longer working with silver link and have been replaced by the 350s
Back to when the Pendolinos were like the Azumas!
And I bet in 20 years it'll be the same with the Azuma and whatever replaces them
It feels weird to see Milton Keynes Central have 5 platforms instead of 6, I only went there yesterday to trainspot!
Look how shiny those pendolinos are!
I remember seeing these at Euston when i used to go London with my dad. I remember getting free travel on Silverlink aswell, but I dont recall traveling on it :)

I still sometimes miss the Class 86, 87, 90, Mark 3 Carriages and Driving Van Trailers. They were great Express Trains.

The first pendolino went in service in 2002 and the first pendolino to be built was in September 2001
The class 321 is the best train ever 😊
The good old days indeed. I was super little in 2004, but the camera quality back in 2004 is nostalgic.
AcelaRailfan2150 Nostalgic indeed for me too. But the 4:3 shaky pixelated quality video will not bed missed haha
MisterMoa for me it will but oh well XD
I'd have to agree, those really were the good, old days!
No it wasn't. And this isn't even that long ago.

@ 11:00. A non-stop, at speed, through BHI!
It’s so strange to see my local station at 10:05 in a time before I was born, especially knowing I’ve probably sat on that exact Super Voyager too

Wow that livery on the 321 beauty
Jeez, 19 years ago this is what Raul was like!
I liked the zebra doors and the red front beautiful
ik this is like really late but this was the best time, you got literally all the stock that ran on the WCML (43s, 47s, 86s, 87s, 90s, 221s & 390s
I remember when the Pendolinos had the zebra doors rather than the STUPID GREY DOORS that they had before they were bought by Avanti West Coast; at least the Voyagers still had them.
Great stuff 👍 I miss that old virgin trains red livery
This particular DVT at 11:42 is now an Artemis class 19, numbered 19001
It's so weird seeing pendolinos alongside old stock like HSTs and DVTs, especially with freight trains only having 1 lone class 90 on the front 😂😂
You can still see the freight trains with a single 90, I saw one go through Nuneaton around 5 months ago.
@HamishG199 oh wow, I've seen loads and never a single one
@@jake_the_train_guy It was a Freightliner, one, in the green heavy haul livery, I believe.
@@HamishG199 ah

Heyday for me on the WCML was the br blue and executive eras. A true 24hr railway not a bus in sight either.....
Agree

@59thrasher Very frosty morning thats why, ice on the overheads.
Looking back from 2023!?
Didn't realise the early pendolinos were 8 cars! At least they were mostly lengthened to 11 cars (Cross Country take note!!)
@soundseeker63 I do understand what you mean, I used to love riding up and down on the mk3's and mk2's with my head out. Virgin still running on the route, Silverlink replaced by London Midland replaced by London Northwestern.
Stephen Dines Although now It’s extended to Glasgow because in these days, There were no services to Glasgow Central yet.
London Midland was replaced by London Northwestern and West Midlands Railway
8:27 - that is such a rare (probably non-existent) sight nowadays; seeing a freight on the fast platforms.
Nice video. I was 9/10 years old then
I was 13
@@hi24x years flew right by
@@eastendewish we could go back to these days!
Pendolino 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
And now, theres only two more days left of wcml virgin...
Avanti West Coast's livery is so bland compared to this.
And obviously, the mk2 and the mk3 coaches
Great video! A fave and like from me. Do you have any more footage from back then?

they has class 158 too ;) Cross country
Good old days indeed good old black and red virgin trains black & red
And the Class 90 as well...
Miss that livery...
Nice video :)
Just realised the video is in 4:3 resolution...

@ronnoc1k8 They get there electricity from there motor which is run by deisel.
Now we have rubbish Avanti west coast replacing the 221 with IET plastic which can’t tilt
Rugby basically only had 2 platforms in those days, one up one down.
Sometimes the MK3 DVTs 82/1s pulled MK2 coaches
The 86s, 87s and 90s did all the work but the DVTs can't bacause they are a Driving van trailer (DVT)
Not so fast! I know you posted this 7 months ago, but Virgin have until 29 April 2017, near when Crossrail opens, and South West Trains Franchise is due to end. In the diary!
Why do the Virgin pendolino’s have 8 coaches?
I think I'd rather have a mk 3: More legroom and aircon that wasn't designed by accountants, rather than an extra 15 mph top speed.
@rachaelmatt Well how do dmus get their electricity iv been on one but i don't know
RonnDon DMU stands for Diesel multiple unit. EMU stands for electric multiple unit. DEMU stands for diesel electric multiple unit. You're stupid.
Maybe you should account the fact that I posted this 6 years ago, so by now I should know what a DEMU or DMU is. Right? Fucking idiot..
Best cohort of virgin trains
I do miss the old virgin trains livery. And silver junk
The time when everything was boxy and British. Now every livery has changed to something bland in comparison. The only train that has remained the same in this montage is the Class 66.
Plus no Platform 6 at MKC.
Wow
omg 86501😲
Pendolinos are mobile sewage pipes.
i thought it was a DEMU
There nothing like a diesel electric Multiple unit
