These cars are most likely one of the most beautiful Volvo ranges ever! The blue is so stunning on every car that has been painted with it. Personal dream daily, a V/XC70 AWD Ocean Race!
That V70 is a genuinely pretty car. I drive one of the earliest examples of this model (2000) with a very basic trim, smallest 5 cylinder petrol engine and 5speed automatic. I can confirm that in parts it feels less solid than the earlier models, but that is mostly due to interior trim parts made from plastic that start to squeak and break. The chassis and drive train are as good as ever, all original except some suspension parts and bushings. 510k kilometers (~320k miles) and counting.
I miss my 06 XC90 VOR (651/800), my favorite car I’ve ever owned. I drove up to Toronto and Niagara Falls from Indiana and there was a xc70 Ocean Race parked next to mine when I left the hotel.
Proud owner of one of the original 2002 Ocean Race V70 (Petrol T5 Version) here, nice video! They are indeed amazing cars and as of now I only encountered one other on the Autobahn since I‘ve been owning mine.
Hi Geoff, I used to own a 2002 V70 2.4T Ocean Race. Drove it for more than 7 years. Always felt like the king of the road!! In all those seven years I only saw a handful of similar ones (in the Netherlands). With pain in my heart I had to sell it (service and maintenance costs got way to high), my wife made me sell it. Drove a Ford Focus wagon next………. It’s gone now……. Need I say more😉. I’m back driving my first ‘car’ love.. 850 2.5 20v in mint condition. Love your channel! We share a passion👍🏻
Hi Geoff great to see your car, I am the owner of 2 VOR 185 6sp manuals, one was a Scottish car and was rotten enough not to spend any cash on it, so I looked for another and found a 96k car not far from me in Essex, it took us too Scotland last year and managed over 50mpg and nearly 700 miles too the tank. Just currently don’t knock me for this modding the VOR, just recently fitted a V70R Ferrita twin tip exhaust as mine was rotten after 18yrs of life, and fitted a rear spoiler which came off of my Scot’s car plus I wanted 18s so went for Medusa as they are a very similar shape to the original 17s on the car. It’s currently on 100k now, I got it cheap as a younger lad owned it and his mates were ripping into him for owning an old man’s car. Tbh I can’t stop looking at the car, such a beautiful colour. Future classic for sure.
I have an 06 v50 in that colour. Still a nice looking car. 300k miles, never spent a dime on the thing. I don't even recall replacing more than a couple of bushes.
Awesome car! I wanted the V70 ocean race but as they were so difficult to find I had to settle for a Cedar Green D5 SE which has been our family. car for the last 17 years (185k miles). Enjoy driving it!
Last year I bought a 2005 V70 Ocean Race with the basic 2.4 petrol 170bhp and 5 speed auto. It has black leather and sports seats. One owner with full Volvo history, it was imported from Japan with 30,500 miles. 2 in the UK.
Already found Ocean Race on the Swedish market. But yeah, living in Sweden so. I also bought a 2010 Volvo V70 2.4D Polestar Optimized automatic. Bought it 2 weeks ago and yeah it say I am the 8th owner on it but in reality I am the 2nd owner of it, because the car have been in hands of a senior couple since brand new until end of last year. Then it has been owned and maintained by several Volvo companies, then it went to a seller 200km from where I live. But I bought that car unseen and untested. Low milage on it. 176000km on it which are quite low for a D5 engine. It is in almost mint condition. Sure few scratches here and there. The engine delivers quite a punch. 0-100 km/h in just 7 seconds. The transmission gears as it was new. I am pleased and I am happy. This V70 came up on the market the very same day I crashed my S80 into the left realing. My S80 somehow started to drift hard left, living in Sweden I am driving on the right side. So entire left side was scrapped. The left wheel broke of and landed near my steeringwheel. I suppose the wheel shouldn't be there at all. So yeah, it was a disaster, but something broke on my S80. I guess destiny wanted me to have that V70 and I really love to drive it. It is so comfortable. I can go about 700 km on half tank, IF I CAN STOP putting down the foot on the gaspedal to the floor. But the car is so quick and it is so fun. I mean, this year I drove a Dodge Charger Hellcat with 717 bhp. Yet, I am having real fun with only 195 bhp. Yeah original it is saying 175 bhp without Polestar Optimization on the papers, but a swedish TH-camr went with the exact same model and engine and looked his car up on a rolling street. The car made 185 bhp without the Polestar Optimization, if so that means my car got 205 bhp and not 195 bhp.
I have one with thor rims :). I had multiple volvo’s and this is my second v70. I got very lucky when I bought it, unique interior and beautiful blue colour.
Love the Ocean Race edition. What a GREAT BUY Jeff! Like the gentleman you purchased from, I also have a P2 platform V70R. Has cost me loads in the last year (my choice) but now keeps up with exotics. 😊
I have an 59 plate xc70 OR, it’s our family work horse and it feels like driving around in you lazy boy man chair. I absolutely love it! Bought it 4 years ago for 7k and the day I have to get rid, I’m going to cry hard!
My current car is a 2015 Ford Mondeo 2.0 litre (185 BHP) ST Line, I wish I could get more than 44 MPG combined out of that! I worked for a Volvo dealership, drove every car they produced, and loved EVERY model! Right back to the Amazon! Owned a 850 10 valve 2.0 litre estate, but sadly it was an oil burner and had to let it go! Then a 2006 S40 2.0 litre diesel, which I purchased in 2018 with only 63k on the clock, but decided to change to my current steed, but regret moving away from Volvo, but then true Volvo owners always do. I will get my dream car in the end. A Volvo V70R!
always loved the v70 ocean race - seen a few on Facebook being broken up for spares but i didnt realise quite how rare they were. This would be awesome on the drive next to a gold 850 :-)
Love P2's, tried to buy one recently but just couldn't find a euro 3 D5 manual, bought a P3 V70 instead but would bloody love to own this thing! great colour
The Ocean Race models are lovely, was watching an XC70 version on Auto Trader....... but it sold within a couple of days 😫 I have seen XC70 Ocean Race models in Silver too.
Had one of those to superb car! Funny story when I went to Volvo dealer and told them I want V70 D5 AWD in manual they said Those cars don't exist only in auto so I found one on my own!

Only reason I let my 2011 model P3 V70 D5 SE Plus AWD go is because I left the UK for a country that wouldn't let me bring it with me. Love those cars. Rare too.
I’ve never really considered Volvos before but I’m starting to like them. I don’t know weather it’s that I’m getting near 40yrs old now but all I want is a reliable car with comfort these days 😂
hi Geoff you are a great man when you understand. on top of that, the volvo 850 is something that newer cars don't have, that v70 ocane Race is a great car, but yes, the 850 still steals the heart.👍🏁
Awesome car. Loved these special series from the beginning. You are really lucky to have one. And it's such a bargain. I must admit, I'm a bit envious 😊.
There’s XC90 OR models too. It’s a unique blue with a badge on the sides. Has fancier clocks than some other models. I own a V70 T5 SE from 2004 in light blue. Beautiful cars. The OR was a limited edition run. A guy I know has a 2002 OR T5 with 255,000 miles on the clock!
The V70 is becoming rare now too on the used market especially here in Ireland. Only a few for sale at any given week now. I’d avoid old auto transmissions because of reliability and Diesel because of high motor tax. I had a D5 from mid 2016 to early 2019 but then found a mint T5 with 62,000 miles on the clock. I bought it for €300 and it’s only got 90,500 now! I found the diesel faster on take off even though it was only 163bhp compared to the petrol 180bhp, but on a Highway the petrol eventually can get up to 140mph. (I didn’t did I?!!!) As I’m in my mid 50s I don’t plan on replacing it. They’re great cars as long as you look after them properly. Once you let them go, then they can become a money pit. Unmercifully too! The older pre-Ford Volvos are definitely better but the V70 is the last Volvo designed mostly by Volvo before Ford bought the company. Peter Horbury was involved in the design. The MK3 never did anything for me as it’s got that terrible fussy angled rear door. It’s a similar car to drive but there’s something special about the 5 cylinder roar when you throttle up. You can tell it’s not a normal 4 cylinder motor once you hear it. Good luck with the OR, keep it sailing!!!
Someone on one of the housing estates near where I live has a turquoise V70R with the tan seats. When they first came out it was a marmite colour scheme but, I agree they do look great.
Nice car, and a snip of a price. I've seen lesser jam-jars with bigger labels. I think I'd have been happy to part with that sort of money, and then some!
There's a story to this actually. I approached them months ago and got a 'come back when you are a serious youtuber' response. It was quite partonising. Anyway since then the channel has grown, and they recently approached me wanting to sponsor some videos but vehicle smart were really good to me when i was a smaller channel, so I checked in with them before doing anything with car vertical - hence the mention in this video...!
Hi Geoff. I think one of two V70 Ocean Races D5 went to scrap yard, and currently parts of it are sold in Belarus, I can tell you the VIN if you are interested.
I own a Volvo P80 chassis C70 2.3 T5 (B5234T9 engine) GT Convertable in Scarab Green Pearl. Only 6 C70's and a further 13 other cars were sold in that colour, worldwide. Not only does it immediately make my car rare, it is the only Scarab Green Pearl C70 with the Celebration Edition Black leather interior with white baseball stitching. As much of a unicorn as your Ocean race. 1 of 1.
I'd go for the 2.4t rather than the D5 and I can tell you that there are currently 3 V70's and 3 XC70's for sale in the Netherlands.......yes you made me look😁
One of my 106s is an aztec si which is a limited edition they only made ~300 of. It is one of two left on the road and one of about 10 left period. i bought it thinking "oh you'll never see another one of those"... a month later i found another one for sale. rare cars are a strange world
That is a cracking car for a cracking price. The small things like the stich in the seats really make it special. Well done Geoff i better go get me a ticket for the GENERAL UPDATE’S GENERAL ELECTION GENERALLY CHAOTIC SPECIAL
I recently bought an 2002 2.4t ocean race and I bought it to save it from the scrapyard, it hade no oil pressure and the turbo hade blew. replaced the turbo and a new oil pan with a new pickup tube and it’s back in business Ever since I bought mine I’ve only seen 2 other v70 ocean race on the road and both of them were facelifts and that brings the question. How many 2002 ocean race editions are left with the 2.4t engine. Ps mine was also equipped with GPS Black leather interior and electric chairs
Awesome car there m8 awesome colour and it’s an estate , I myself have a rare ford mondeo st220 estate in rare infra red ( dark metallic pearl red) they only originally made 18 in this colour (2002) there is only 7 left in this rare colour , however my actual car is 1 of 1 this has been verified by dvla it’s 1 of 1 because my car was the only car ever ordered with ( light graphite grey recaros and factory sat nav) so that makes it 1 of 1 it’s currently on around 375 k and just undergoing a full restoration love a unicorn eh but yea please please keep this car it’s a deffo keeper this
While I respect the 850, I would definitely take the Ocean Race. You are never going to have a rarer car, it looks in great condition, especially inside and it's just more luxurious IMO, you should notice that when you give it some long drive tests.
That's awesome! Really cool to see a ocean race model it looks really good. I've got a Se Lux D4 Auto S40 , it's a 2.0L 5 Cylinder so a D5 but a 2L 180bhp instead of a 2.4L 185bhp there's only 25 left in the UK and I thought that was pretty special!
Hi Geoff. I’m probably repeating what others have said , but I still remember Jeremy Clarkson waxing lyrical about a Volvo . Much to the amusement of the other two . But I totally agree they are a really good car , but as you say they just aren’t as solid as they used to be . Kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍
You mean, Zhejiang Geely? Not a proper Volvo in my eyes! Granted, some of them look nice enough, but I'd take some convincing to get enthusiastic about them. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on an OV4 Jacob, the original, and probably, genuinely, the rarest Volvo on Earth.
That D5/2.4D (many year they were identical) engine can be software adjusted to 200hp. Just be carefull the tuner does not increase torgue too much. The autoboxes do not always aappriciate the increase in pulling power.
Can't beat a Volvo P2, the Ocean Race ones look lovely (from someone who has had a V70 D5 with 307,000 miles up, an D5 XC70 with 218,000 miles and my currect XC70 has a mere 163,000 on). The radios go wrong on the facelift ones, as you and John have found (replace it with an Android unit), other than that the front wishbone bushes wear (its cheaper to replace the whole arm than the bushes, ebay is your friend) and watch for swirl flaps on 185bhp diesels. You won't find a more comfortable car (only car I have know on the same level is the Rover 75). Incidentally, in a past life, I worked for Group 4 Security. The chap who owned Group 4 (now no longer with us) was rich enough to have his own ocean racinmg yacht whoch he entered in the ocean race - it was then called Group 4, now called Ecover (which he also owned). It was against the prevailing winds, so it was a big challenge.
I know it's kinda stupid question, but Geoff - which would you actually prefer - 850 or V70? When the engine and transmission is the same. And please give at least 3 good arguments!
question: why volvo always has something holding on the front driver windshield? what is it and for what? i plan to get v70 2006 70.000km is that good decision? thanks and should i change timing belt or when?
Dear god i would absolutely love this motor. I saw that for sale in the groups. Im a massive p2 D5 nut. My first car was an s60 D5 at 28 and now i've got a euro3 d5 v70 on 178k miles myself and do all my own engine work and maintenance. This has to be the best colour for one of these alongside the metallic purple. I did briefly have an s60 in purple but it died and i regret letting it go. Everyone thinks im mad for loving these cars so much but theres nowt like a 5 pot d5. Besides being great cars ive made great friends from the p2 volvo community. The weakness of these is the auto boxes which need new gearbox solenoids or valve body when they get clogged up. We just took our v70 euro3 d5 auto to disney paris and back with some london driving inetween and managed to average around 50 mpg real work calculating miles v litres filled, granted most the french driving was at 80mph. The most ive read on the dash is 73mpg driving from swansea to bristol to buy some volvo alloys. Any volvo nuts out there follow my car insta im @v70d5lyfe .
Totally agree about the PH2 build quality. I went from an Audi a4 B5 which had a solid interior and leather as thick as bike leathers and was a bit disappointed with my D5. Is see the handbrake boot clips have broken on yours too. Annoying that one.....
Sweet.. great score. It's just the age we're the technology is starting to get a head of It's self. Bloody so cheap. There worth a fortune over here in Australia I'd stick with the 850.
Those seats look absolutely unreal. I've had a P2 XC70 (also a 55 plate) and the seats were indescribably comfortable but visually looked a bit average. Yours look tight as fuck.
The Ocean Race Volvos are made by Volvo Special Veichles Operations which also makes the police cars, ambulances and other special Volvos for governments and so on so Indeed a very special car.
850 for me, traditional Swedish flying double wardrobe 👌, from the decade Volvo fought back! Paint the 850 that Sweet blue and build the one that Volvo forgot! 💡 💡
Not sure where your statistics come from, but I've got a 2005 S80 D5 SE Lux (saloon) with a manual gearchange. I realise this model isn't really rare, but I've never, not even once, seen another 'manual' like mine. They're all 'auto's'. (P.S. If the HU850 entertainment system breaks, you'll almost certainly never replace it. I tried everywhere, even head office in Gothenburg, and no-one could help).
@@v70d5lyfe Thanks for responding. To be honest, I'm not that bothered because it's only the CD player that's failed and my son taught me how to use one of those new-fangled ipod things.
The ONLY Volvos worth considering were the 244 and the 245 (simply unbreakable). However the 242 GT was more collectible. I do like the V40 but they are are "mish-mash" of electrical problems.
@@GeoffBuysCars I used to work for a company by the name of Scuderia Veloce in Sydney in the 80s and 90s. They were the major importers of Volvo Porsche and Ferrari into Australia. The V6 Volvos were always a nightmare. Currently I'm trying to hunt down a Volvo 265 pininfarina hardtop for a client in Perth. They are rare.

I found the diesel faster on take off even though it was only 163bhp compared to the petrol 180bhp, but on a Highway the petrol eventually can get up to 140mph. (I didn’t did I?!!!)
As I’m in my mid 50s I don’t plan on replacing it.
Beautiful colour, I've never really been a Volvo fan but I'd love a V70R of this gen in that turquoise colour with the tan leather interior
Someone on one of the housing estates near where I live has a turquoise V70R with the tan seats. When they first came out it was a marmite colour scheme but, I agree they do look great.
That’s a lovely shade of blue.
Nice car, and a snip of a price. I've seen lesser jam-jars with bigger labels. I think I'd have been happy to part with that sort of money, and then some!
Kudos for not following the sheep and doing a Car Vertical infomercial like everyone else. Always appreciate a bit of Geoff individualism.
There was also a Volvo Ocean Race FH & FH16 limited edition truck (June 2011) - 600 made.
Didn’t know this!
@@GeoffBuysCars Geoff Buys Volvo Trucks 😆
Had one loved it. Want another.
Well done!
One of my 106s is an aztec si which is a limited edition they only made ~300 of. It is one of two left on the road and one of about 10 left period. i bought it thinking "oh you'll never see another one of those"... a month later i found another one for sale. rare cars are a strange world
Loved them old 10 and 306s just don't crash or you're dead
That is a cracking car for a cracking price. The small things like the stich in the seats really make it special. Well done Geoff i better go get me a ticket for the GENERAL UPDATE’S GENERAL ELECTION GENERALLY CHAOTIC SPECIAL
It is nice ain’t it!
I love that colour 😍
I recently bought an 2002 2.4t ocean race and I bought it to save it from the scrapyard, it hade no oil pressure and the turbo hade blew. replaced the turbo and a new oil pan with a new pickup tube and it’s back in business
Ever since I bought mine I’ve only seen 2 other v70 ocean race on the road and both of them were facelifts and that brings the question.
Oh yes, definitely more luxurious. I need to get the two side by side
Nice .... No 22B tho , thanks for the showround ❤
Great car, I'll give you an uptick to help you keep both. 👍
Would love to know what Geoff thinks about the quality of modern volvos. I've heard the quality has gone down.
For confirmation, ask any Volvo tech/mechanic for their honest opinion.
I drive an '07 S60 2.4 t5 manual, color 452, and I'd rather had a v70 (space) and this Ocean Race Blue is magnificent!
V70
R
Looks the bomb. Still
That D5/2.4D (many year they were identical) engine can be software adjusted to 200hp.
It was against the prevailing winds, so it was a big challenge.
the ocean blue is a beautiful looking car
Yes, that is a beautiful colour.
I know it's kinda stupid question, but Geoff - which would you actually prefer - 850 or V70? When the engine and transmission is the same. And please give at least 3 good arguments!
Nice looking car.
question:
why volvo always has something holding on the front driver windshield? what is it and for what?
i plan to get v70 2006 70.000km is that good decision? thanks
and should i change timing belt or when?
Which website did you get the car figures from?
I've been across the Chanel on a Volvo Ocean Yacht
Yep Nice I Had One But It Was The 163bhp With The Tailgate Spoiler On It They Need That To Show Them Off Better
Oooooh I do like the metallic purple!
Lovely car but why has the lacquer peel been left to fester?
Hi i think I have one. how do I know if it's original?
Ah man! I live in Stourbridge, how did I miss it!?? Anyway, I've found a XC70 Ocean race. 2.5T.. Any thoughts? Is it a good thing?
Totally agree about the PH2 build quality. I went from an Audi a4 B5 which had a solid interior and leather as thick as bike leathers and was a bit disappointed with my D5. Is see the handbrake boot clips have broken on yours too. Annoying that one.....
Sweet.. great score. It's just the age we're the technology is starting to get a head of It's self. Bloody so cheap. There worth a fortune over here in Australia
I'd stick with the 850.
Those seats look absolutely unreal. I've had a P2 XC70 (also a 55 plate) and the seats were indescribably comfortable but visually looked a bit average. Yours look tight as fuck.
When are you planning to visit Falmouth Geoff
Not sure yet
If you go past black cat roundabout on the a1north
You will find loads of volvos parked up .
Hey, Volvo boy, that's actually nice.
Ha ha, thanks!
The Ocean Race Volvos are made by Volvo Special Veichles Operations which also makes the police cars, ambulances and other special Volvos for governments and so on so Indeed a very special car.
GBC that’s a lovely colour… despite it being a cat car I can see it being a very popular Geoffle car…..🎉
If you need to get rid, I'm interested 👍
We shall see!
Good coup
850 for me, traditional Swedish flying double wardrobe 👌, from the decade Volvo fought back!
Paint the 850 that Sweet blue and build the one that Volvo forgot! 💡 💡
I’d love to do that
£1250? Absolute bargain Geoff!
Right place, right time.
Are you likely to want to sell this at some point? If so please could you let me know? Thank Geoff!
Was telling my girlfriend a few days ago was the V70 Titanium Edition….can’t remember if it was a US only thing tho
Those seats look immaculate what the hell material are they exactly?
Not sure where your statistics come from, but I've got a 2005 S80 D5 SE Lux (saloon) with a manual gearchange. I realise this model isn't really rare, but I've never, not even once, seen another 'manual' like mine. They're all 'auto's'. (P.S. If the HU850 entertainment system breaks, you'll almost certainly never replace it. I tried everywhere, even head office in Gothenburg, and no-one could help).
plenty out there, my mate bought one for 320 quid last year.
try the p2 enthusiast group as people in there have had them soldered and fixed.
@@v70d5lyfe Thanks for responding. To be honest, I'm not that bothered because it's only the CD player that's failed and my son taught me how to use one of those new-fangled ipod things.
I love tis car
I want one but I prefer the ones in the XC70 variant.
I’m not going to refuse one if it were gifted to me though. Heheh!
Stop flexing Geoff you can’t do that while lying to us about preference. LOL!
The ONLY Volvos worth considering were the 244 and the 245 (simply unbreakable). However the 242 GT was more collectible. I do like the V40 but they are are "mish-mash" of electrical problems.
V40 over 850?!
My friend got one but here in Sweden it's just another Volvo ;)
Wait what never knew that my dad has 2002 2,4t volvo ocean race it that rare ? it also slighly tuned 225hp 😮
I love my v70 turbo
