    You’ve failed to mention the one time where they fell into a rift and Rick sacrifices himself to save Morty only to later find a way out for himself after finding the other collar that Morty dropped. This was clear evidence that if Rick truly doesn’t care about his family he at least cares about Morty.

    I disagree. A narcissist is developmentally unable to feel love, care or empathy for others. He is indeed selfish, manipulative and won't open up about his feelings, but that doesn't mean he is a narcissist, only that he has narcissist traits. If he would have been a narcissist, he wouldn't care about another person. He pretends to not have feelings for no one and say hurtful things like he is dismissive of Morty's feelings and well-being, but when something happens to Morty, he's always there looking for him and making ideas to save him. That means he is capable of feeling worried about someone. I would say he is emotionally unavailable and is afraid of showing his feelings, but sometimes have little times of vulnerability

      Dude, narcissists don’t exist. Everyone has their own bad and good traits. Stop acting like people are just one note characters just because that’s how you perceive them. Most people who you think are narcissists just don’t like you and act better to most other people. Most people who are diagnosed narcissist are so self obsessed that they look for fake mental illnesses that they can grab onto to make people feel bad for them.

      It’s confirmed he’s on the spectrum and since he’s high functioning he most likely has Asperger’s which causes theses behaviors

      I don't think narcissists can't love other people. They just love themselves way more

    PTSD is probably more accurate. Along with his knowledge of the infinite multiverse, which turned him into a nihilist.

      Totally agree. Specially knowing his obsession with Rick Prime. Hes afraid of making bonds, so he pretend he doesnt care, also hes too smart, so he can fake.

    I think Rick has shown some love for others. His suicide attempt at being broken up with is a key example. Him sacrificing himself as well

    Rick's self-hatred is astronomical the end of season 5 and beginning of season 6 really showcase the level of his trauma and suffering
    *spoilers past this point*
    from killing versions of himself for however many years that montage was, to the "ghost" of his wife, he made in his own reality to torture himself. Then his later obsession with finding Rick Prime by the end of the season 6. I think this all shows us more into the psyche of rick than we've ever had before.

    Yet, we find that a lot of his uncaring nature is just a mask in later seasons. Deep down he’s just a man who’s afraid of being hurt again. There’s no question he’s immoral, but a narcissist he’s not.

    Rick is definitely narcissistic but he isn’t a full narcissist, he does love his family even if he doesn’t show it much

  • @pimpenstein
    @pimpenstein 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Rick didn't behave that way before his wife was murdered. He was a normal, sober family man. He is the one who refused to leave his family, which is why Rick Prime murdered them. He still has deep feelings for his family, which he masks because he is afraid they'll meet the same fate as his wife. On the surface, yeah, he acts like a narcissist... I don't think NPD is his issue though. Narcissism stems from childhood trauma. Rick was in his late 20s when his wife was murdered, and all accounts show he was a well-adjusted dude. Rick Prime is a sociopath. There are infinite Ricks, all with different personalities.

  • @crikeymate9410
    @crikeymate9410 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    But logically, his narcissism was expected. If an incredibly gifted person was to see all there is in the universe, each individual flaw and aspect, they would no longer see the bigger picture. There is no more curiosity and therefore fear that of death as they know they have seen everything. They slowly believe that nothing near them matters after seeing it hundreds of times, even other intelligent organisms. Thr only thing that you will ever know is your mind, so, Rick believes that he is all that matters. However, you did fail to mention that Rick is afraid of death, and will do anything to stop it killing him. It is only because he does not know what happens when he dies and refuses to see this for himself. He is a narcissistic, insane, and small old man that will only ever truly care about himself.

      I believe that's false. While its true he is afraid of death there is multiple moments of him being willing to die. 2 instances specifically. 1 where he almost commits suicide and another were he sacrifices himself for morty. Ill focus more on the second instance. When he saves morty during when the timeline split into a bunch of rifts he was content with dying. It showed that he truly did care about morty. We also learn in the newest season that there's a rick who truly doesn't care about anything. Even Rick doesn't want to admit that Rick prime is the rickest Rick. Our Rick c-137 has shown alot of empthathy and growth as a character. Hes shown that he does truly care for his family and freinds. As much as he doesn't want to admit it he doesn't only care for himself

    Interesting. The last bits on, how he is not understood, cause can't be understood by others since he's a genius who sees a bigger picture than anyone else simply makes him a cynical and bitter person. But the "narcissist" bit. I am not sure about knowing that you're the best and behaving in such ways is narcissism. The fact that he's a scientist that values science more than people... how is it narcissistic? He indeed did things only for his own selfish needs, like putting a nut in Morty's ass that made him stupid after, making a battery powered by a civilization... And probably many more... While even in those times he realized the cruelty of the situation, although not reflecting it to himself. Narcissistic personality disorder is an early stage childhood development. Doing something from selfish needs (everyone does this all the time), does not necessarily mean you have NPD. How your life and your experiences shape you into a bitter-cynic-know it all does not necessarily correspond to being a narcissist. Does he use people? Sure. Does someone who's just super selfish use people? Sure. Are they a narcissit? Not necessarily.

    Your analysis seems overly reductive. There are times when he is actively lying or deceiving characters, e.g. Your clip when he is lying about his clone daughter to Beth. Also, Rick's character being aware of the 4th wall also clues is in that some of the things displayed are played for bits e.g. The end of episode 1 season 1 and the whole Szechuan sauce bit. The true characterization of the character is more nuanced and there are moments of sincerity as well as moments of being "a terrible father/grandpa"
