This set an NCAA record btw. They ended up shooting 40 of 111 and didn’t take a single two point shot. Grinnell College also had a player score 138 points in one game 10 years ago, so it seems like they like to have fun.
Oh damn it's the same school lol 😆😅 I remember when that guy had the 138, was all over espn the next day. I think he attempted like 70 3pt shots and over 100 shots overall
My brother went to this school. He would often see signs around campus that said stuff like "You score 100 points in a game. We score 100 points in a half." They also at one point had a style they called "Goon ball". They would literally not have a player go down the floor to play defense. They'd just have him stand under his own basket the entire game. As soon as the other team scored, they'd just throw the inbounds pass to the player at the other end of the floor. After that happened a couple of times the other team would have to leave a player back in order to try and intercept the inbounds pass. Completely messing up their offensive gameplan, because they wouldn't have any plays set up with only four players. They called it "Goon ball" because at one point the player that would just stand under the basket complained to the coach. "Can I please do something else? I feel like a goon just standing out there doing nothing." It also kept teams from slowing the ball down on the offensive end, because with only four players back on defense, the open player would want to score when he was left open, so he would either have to receive the pass and just stand there dribbling or go and score. Leading to Grinnell being able to get the game back to up tempo offense it wants.
Yup. This team had a game on ESPN almost 20 years ago because of their unorthodox style of play. Their coach said he taught defense for 15 minutes and then focused on offense the rest of the year.
What's incredible is these are mostly solid shot attempts, nothing too forced. And they have a lot of room. How in the heck does the defense not adjust???
Just a note before people talk about how stupid this is: they know. They choose a specific game every so often to try to break a record, like Jack Taylor's 138 point bomb. They knew exactly what they were doing. (it isn't a coincidence that they never took a non-3 shot)
@@MickeyMouse-lm6zj true, but I've seen people saying that it's bad coaching and completely missing the point because they think it's the normal strategy

That means they play a hyper press and if you can break it you'll usually get an easy layup. They'll constantly sub players out like hockey, no one usually plays more than 20 minutes (unless they're specifically trying to do something like Jack Taylor's 100 point games or Patrick Maher having 37 assists in a 2014 game)

Yes, Grinnell plays like this consistently. Their coach recruits 3point shooters who aren’t going D1 and teaches them to launch a 3 ASAP on every possession. Basically trying to invent Curry’s game back when he was still just Del’s kid.
Emmaus put out a podcast about it, and the coaches said they weren’t offended by it at all, but rather that it was possibly just more publicity for Emmaus, so yeah, some say it was a cheap move by Grinnell (especially ESPN) but Emmaus is taking it pretty lightly. No need to be offended for them
