  • Here is part two of a two-part set of videos outlining the sound and functionality of the Korg MS-20 Mini's filters, which is part of a greater series which outlines the sound and functionality of the MS-20 Mini overall. So we're clear.

    I'm half expecting this segment to expand to "MS20 Filter, parts 3, 4, 5, 6..."
    This thing's filter section is so unusual and powerful you could easily squeeze in another four videos. :-)
    Thanks again, sir.

    You take the mystery away without taking the fun away. This is all so great.

    This sounds AMAZING. Wow..
    Just when I thought maybe I should have saved and bought another synthesizer (or two for the same price) as my first synthesizer, these patches/tricks make me love my beautifully engineered Korg. Thank you for these videos!

    When i got into making music and synths inhad no idea learning couls be this much fun. And i didn’t think i would be using any analog synths and now i make most sounds with real analog gear!

    Great video!
    Especially since all the nitty gritty 'this knob does that' stuff was dealt with in part one... really enjoyed seeing and hearing how this reproduction behaves when you dive in and have fun with it.

    Man, your videos are just great. They've been a huge help when deciding what I might want to buy, and a much bigger help once I get the gear and am trying to figure out how it works. The MS-20 is an extraordinary synth and this series you've made is a big help with getting to know this wonderful instrument.

    Not all of us dude.
    Some of us adore that vintage sound, when individual synths had there own personal sound.
    It makes them into real instruments rather than mere sound generators.

    Reading through the comments I can see three typical uses of a computer for a guy being highlighted. Information gathering, shopping and arousal. I guess it's a compliment to the series and the product that these areas are blurring for lots of the viewers. That's some entertainment for you.

    What kind of cable do you have in signal out? I am looking a new cable for my ms20 mini and I've seen others with that specific cable but I haven't been able to find it online anywhere.

    Great videos here!
    But, you got me confused. At around 3:00 you say the HP is modulated by a triangle, and the LP by a square. but you haven't patched a square LFO, just the triangle. So the filters are now both modulated by a triangle, except that the modulation range of the HPF is now twice as big because two knobs will do the exact same thing?

    Your videos are essential viewing, Marc! Question: can you select the MIDI Channel on the MS20 Mini - I've heard it's hard-wired to channel 1? Thanks a lot.

    Marc great stuff, love all the videos. How did you land a job as cool as with Moog, and why havent you done any sequential circuits or dave smith gear: prophet 5 08 and 12 are all good as well as mopho pro one tetra ect, or oberheim synths?

  • @automaticgainsay
    @automaticgainsay  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't work for Moog. I work for the Bob Moog Foundation. I've done the synths I've owned or been able to borrow! Prophet 5s are quite expensive. I had access to one in 1988, but that was a long time ago! As for the Prophet 12, I've talked to DSI about it! I have resisted DSI's modern stuff because of DCOs, but the 12 sounds really good. I'm working on Oberheim.

    Hey, Mark - One quick question. On my MS-20 mini, I notice that when you press or release any key, there's a weird 'pulse' sound that comes through that makes certain kinds of sounds near impossible. You'll hear it If you try to make a standard 'flute' patch with a triangle wave. It goes away if you increase the Hold part of the ADSR. Does yours do this too? It's not just the standard 'noise' issue, it almost sounds like the key press is being picked up by a mic!

    • @seffers007
      @seffers007 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is 8 years after you asked, but I just solved this today - just increase the Hold Time a little until it disappears.

  • @rg7120

    There were two different versions of the MS-20 filters. Maybe you're comparing this, which I think is the Korg35 filter, to the other version. It sounds like an original to me.

  • @deadpolitical
    @deadpolitical 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    ...But the Prophet 12 not only has dco's, they're digital oscillators. Wouldnt a prophet 08 be a little more down your alley? my experience with dsi stuff has been warm analog, despite the dco's. I think they're better than the bad rap they got from the prophet 600 and others. And the oscillator slop function on them gives that tuning drift that we are so accustomed to.

      @@automaticgainsay i don't believe you

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lesdupont I didn't "sample" anything. The theme of this series was created with the MS-20 and beats from GarageBand. All examples were me physically playing the synthesizer. There is no sampling, nor even any imitation of any other band. If, by some chance, I used a similar chord progression, that's as may be... but I don't use the music of others. On top of that, apart from some video that was on MTV decades ago, I know nothing of Cabaret Voltaire's music.
      Can you direct me to an example of what your talking about?

    • @lesdupont
      @lesdupont 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@automaticgainsay In my memory the chords reminds me of "digital rasta" by the cabs, but you're right your music is different. Anyway there's is no shame in sampling if it's part of a creative process :)

    • @BM-di4cu
      @BM-di4cu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +frank It's my understanding that the filters on the MS-20 are exponential, not linear, so the filter cannot be played as a sine wave oscillator, however patching the KBD CV Out into the VCF LPF Cutoff in will allow you to dial in filter keytracking so that low notes have the filter closed and the higher notes have the filter more opened. The amount is dialed in by way of the EG2/EXT control on the LPF side

    on the original ms-20 the filters sound a lot warmer, probably due to old condensers. i wish they cared more for the imperfect sound making the old ms-20 really special instead of "improving" the circuits.
