    Wow, I've never had an Ms-20 but the charm of the paired high and low pass filters is clear immediately. It sounds like they form a notch but react to each others harmonics. The peak and res can skew the notch to different angles. That's a ton of pythagorean. :)

    You've really done a great job with these demonstrations. Well job, good sir. Your instructions have also helped me understand a lot more about synthesizers than i did before. I'm using a VA, Korg Radias, at the moment, but i'll get my hands on one of these babies very soon. Thanks again.

    can't even find the original comment but from another professional in the industry who consults with big companies bla bla bla, i just want to say a sincere thank you for these videos. With regards to price performance ratio, you're exactly correct, $600 has to cut a few corners by default, but the ones that matter stay sharp and intact. Glad to hear the keys are not "full mini" and even playing them at NAMM i could tell that it won't take more than a few hours to adjust to the key size. cheers!

    6:50 reminds me sooo much of something. I've had this tune in my head that sounds a bunch like it, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is, but it sounds great. Any idea?
    Also great series of video's, you sold me a MonoLogue (love ittttt), I might have to start thinking about getting a nice used MS-20 mini too, these sounds you're making on it sound fantastic!

  • @1slowhead
    @1slowhead 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @BabyDropHead By the seems of it, yes. You could trigger the filter or amp with any CV output from the MS20 I believe. You could also perform that whilst having the MS20 audio going into the Minibrute audio in. So you could make use of exaggerated filter results of both synth's filters. It would be a pleasure to own both it would appear!

    I must say that I could get! the same sort of self-oscillating sound out of the monotron as I heard on the 'real' full-size MS-20 when I made an intro with it end of 1991 or early 1992.I found this weekend in my huge tape-collection the tape where I recorded some samples with that real MS-20. I have also the intro and a poem where I use the MS-20 in the background(I believe I used the MS-20 on it, must check that).I plan to put it all here on You Tube.Greetz

    here, from the NAAM pr interviews:
    "There were different filters in earlier and later versions of the MS20 - which did you use?
    The MS-20 uses the KORG35 circuit that was on the earlier version of MS-20. Preferences vary between users, but we felt that the earlier version of the filter created a sound that had a more distinctive presence, and thus it was the appropriate choice for this reincarnation."

    I am abit split between getting this or the dominion X, it seems the dominion X can do more and have 3 oscillators and also a very nice sound. The ms-20 mini do sound very good in it's own way also but the noise that people are experiencing is kinda putting me off abit. What can you say about that is it still present in the newer ms-20 they manufacture? How would you compare dominion X to this synth?

  • @automaticgainsay
    @automaticgainsay  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not sure! I've always believed it to be the interaction of the two filters, and the fact that they are self-oscillating 12dB per oct filters, which is really uncommon. Someone has suggested that the high pass is actually a 6dB per octave resonant self-oscillating filter... which I don't think I've even ever seen before! But when I say "these sound like MS-20 filters," I'm talking about that intense grinding shriek they do!

  • @Zemael

  • @F0nkyNinja
    @F0nkyNinja 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Marc, there was a guy who had a look at the oscillators of the MS-20 and found that the sawtooth at 32' wasn't straight - but exponential, which is caused by high pass. He changed the coupling capacitors (the ones in line with the signal to shift DC-levels between the two modules) because they were too small (he changed them to 100uF he thinks) and found that this fixed the problem and boosted the low end! Would this in any way have been replicated in the mini, and is a mod possible?

  • @turquoisecapricorn
    @turquoisecapricorn 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The people of Korg are very clever Marc.You, the man of Moog with Bob's Moog heritage does these videos for them(Korg). You are very enthusiastic of this Korg product.So it seems you like more Korg than Moog.

  • @SushiConQueso
    @SushiConQueso 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did, sadly I didn't get to catch the presentation you made on the modular. I hung out a bit with Jake and Jason over at the Moog Music booth and kept fiddling with the Sub Phatty. That and the MS20 were my show stealers this year. Elektron A4 was pretty cool too. If only Yamaha could get back in the game with some new school FM + Analog Filter or a revamped CS line eh?

    Hey! not sure how often you check these comments, but can you just use an aux chord and then put a 1/4" converter at the end of it ? or does it need to be a 1/4" cable with a 1/8 inch converter.. hope this makes sense

  • @curlyfro97
    @curlyfro97 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it possible to play the filter on this? I tried it on a VST and I couldn't figure it out. Would I have to patch something in in order to play it?

  • @F0nkyNinja

    Every MS20 I played sounded different - so I wouldn't say this won't sound like a real MS20. The old ones come in 2 versions with each a different filter. The oldest one sounded great, the neer one just sounds good. The MS20 mini is a replica of the newer one, so definitely genuine MS20 circuitry, only not the one I hoped for.

    • @MisAnnThorpe
      @MisAnnThorpe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mini is a replica of the first MS20 filter type.

  • @DanielDavissynthman
    @DanielDavissynthman 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're right. The Sub Phatty sounds like the better Moog. But the MS-20 sounds like the better Korg.

  • @automaticgainsay
    @automaticgainsay  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    "Practically sponsored by Korg?" Uh, no. I made this video without any input from Korg, using my own resources, and without financial recompense. Korg was willing to let me borrow an MS-20 Mini to do it, and has enjoyed the work I've done.
    I'm also not too keen on the implication that I need to be encouraged to be honest.
    Build quality: What exactly are you looking for in a $600 synth? Have you ever played an original MS-20? It's as good as that. I like the feel of these knobs better.

  • @briesmodular
    @briesmodular 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I read that Korg used the 'old' filter on this re-issue but as I hear that's a load of bullshit. This one just goes into self oscillation without that distinctive 'roar', it just squeels like the newer ones. Too bad because that's about 50% why I love this synth.

    • @MisAnnThorpe
      @MisAnnThorpe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I take that back! Was just going by what Korg had claimed. Appears that you know otherwise.

    • @briesmodular
      @briesmodular 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MisAnnThorpe It's a cool synth all in itself but Korg must stop claiming things that aren't true. The difference between how the ESP sections react for example is really really big.

    1:12 you mention that the LPF is -12dB without explicitly pointing out that the HPF is single-pole. Seems like you're insinuating that the HPF has the same slope as the LPF which isn't accurate. Looks like you make that insinuation multiple times too so I'm starting to think that you didn't know the HPF is -6dB per octave.
