    Interesting to note that the little bipedal figured out by itself that jumping instead of walking really fast produces the most efficient movement, according to the computer.

      In all seriousness though; This is an artificial neural network en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_neural_network using an evolutionary algorithm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolutionary_algorithm to generate locomotion patterns for artificial creatures, not for recreating physical evolution.
      If this is a joke and I'm way off I'd like to remind you of the original poe's law; "Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is utterly impossible to parody a Creationist in such a way that someone won't mistake for the genuine article."

    There were two things that stood out in these iterations; first was that the models didn't have muscled feet, which made the gaits (particularly of the birdlike creatures) look really odd, and that the creatures with arms moved very weirdly, as their arms either did nothing, or moved in completely inefficient ways.
    This desperately needs a lung model involved in the calculations, where the organism needs to take in oxygen to fuel muscle use, and use muscles efficiently in order to keep from overusing the oxygen it can take in.
    There was another video i saw of this system which had a humanoid navigating an obstacle course, and it flailed its arms in the air oddly. I'm all but certain that if muscle usage cost oxygen, that this flailing for balance would quickly be eliminated in favor of using the arms only as needed, and that the lungs themselves would prompt the creature to move its arms as to aid the lungs in their expansion and contraction, which would promote the arm swinging that most joggers and runners adopt.

    • @damienclassen2179
      @damienclassen2179 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      They also need to simulate emotions. An angry bird and a sad, emotional bird should walk differently. They need a full brain simulation where the effects of dopamine, serotonin, adrenaline and other chemicals all interact with the organism realistically. The organism should think, feel, and ponder the meaning of life and its place in the cosmos.

    • @landonhagan450
      @landonhagan450 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually, at these speeds, none of which were at a full run, creatures tend to move as little of the rest of their bodies as possible, especially humans. It's less about mechanical efficiency and more about preserving energy at the the cost of efficiency (essentially laziness). Even if they added the system you've proposed, there would likely be little difference until we reach higher speeds. I'm not even sure it would matter then, either, since upon rewatching the video it seems clear to me that they are engaging their arms more as they exert more effort. As for the feet, it doesn't really seem that off to me, and I'd be willing to bet that leaving muscles out of the feat helps maintain footing.

    • @SirRebrl
      @SirRebrl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@landonhagan450 If the thing gets done (in this case, bipedal locomotion) with lower cost, that's more efficient, even if less elegant. You pretty much said it's less about efficiency and more about efficiency at the cost of efficiency. Your point, though, seems to be claiming that moving the arms is less efficient than not at low speed.
      However, I just walked around my apartment with my arms hanging like noodles and they naturally picked up a slight swing from the reciprocating torque of walking - that is, I would have needed to exert some tension to prevent swinging. If you keep your hips totally straight while walking you'll get different results, but I don't imagine that walking without pivoting your hips at all is optimal.
      When walking at particularly low speed, though, we may be prone to using our hands for things, in which case we'd want our hands isolated from the rotation and so not let them swing.

      It intentionally didn't try. Evolution algorithms although not random they work on a base that is (simulating mutations) and as it's the representative (best one) of the first generation (before the worst ones are cut off the gene pool simulating natural selection) it's about as good as luck alone can get it.

      +Jessie Janson robots like this have already been built. The newest ones can navigate obstacles and climb stairs pretty successfully

    • @jpthek9
      @jpthek9 9 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      +Jessie Janson No. It takes hundreds of iterations to perfect a gait. Better do them on a computer. What can be done is to create a simulated model of the robot, find the right gait, then apply it in real life.

    • @ekuliyo
      @ekuliyo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I think the real problem is that servos and hydraulics just can't do what muscles can.

    • @jessiejanson1528
      @jessiejanson1528 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luke while that is true to an extent, they can use it to teach their robot to walk. If they wanted they could use this program to find better placements on the robot for its "muscles" and at the same time have a program that would teach it to walk, it can use the programs walk as a base to start from in real life.

    • @ekuliyo
      @ekuliyo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The problem is that the movements to maintain balance and self-correct have to be precise, subtle, and highly responsive. There is no mechanical means of movement I know of we have that can respond like that.
