Brilliant. Love how he playfully says; "It's probably gonna redefine pop history, I think, in America and worldwide", and IT DID! He's absolutely bang-on about "Losing My Religion" being a hit, though he surely couldn't have known just how much it would change things for the band. Amazing to think how confident he was about that song in particular, given its unconventionality as a single (the others' quotes of "It doesn't have a chorus and the lead instrument is a mandolin" come to mind).
I think Out of Time is the album that really stuck out for them. Production and aesthetic wise it was completely different than anything they had done prior. Most if not all of their songs can be played at symphony or something.
@jimmylifetime Michael and the rest of the band could not have foreseen the increasingly irksome tendancy of a large proportion of the pop music-listening masses to wholly fail to get the bubblegum irony underlying "Shiny Happy People".
So talented. So cute.
out of time...what an amazing album, pure magic.
This was taped when I was born, Michael, REM do you see how huge influence you have? I admire you.
Seven years before I was born and I'm still jamming to this record
Holy fuck. He was right. I should save this shit.
Probably at his most confident and bullish ever. Awesome.

He looked better with hair. He’s pleased with the album and he was right. It’s a great album. One of their best.
Wow, the things he said at the start really did happen for them at least.
