Trains at Stratford International - 12/07/19

  • Video: A busy evening spotting trains at Stratford International station on High Speed 1. This spot features the usual Eurostar and Southeastern action with an increase as this was filmed during the evening rush hour to the late evening.
    There were many more empty stock moves than last time with a few extra Eurostar trains coming out of the depot to act as cover, as well as many Southeastern trains passing through non-stop (incl. one normal service running non-stop from Ashford to St Pancras due to a severe delay).
    I got fairly lucky with some Eurostar drivers giving horn toots while passing through, as well as one driver waving as they took a train up to the depot towards the end (sadly I didn't see them waving until it was close to the wall, so my wave back may have gone unnoticed).
    TRAINS INCLUDED:
    Eurostar Class 373 TGV TMST e300s & Class 374 Velaro e320s, Southeastern Class 395 Javelins.

      You should be on one. There's a section where, at high speed, it dives into a tunnel, then up and over a track round a slight curve and it does it so fast and so smoothly. Fascinating experience.

    I have a few questions about the station:
    1) what is security like with people filming here?
    2) do you need a ticket to get on the platform?
    3) which is the best platform to spot at?

    • @CHOO-CHOOPlane
      @CHOO-CHOOPlane  4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Security is very hit-and-miss with spotters, this happened to be my luckiest spot there. And yes you have to buy a platform ticket (and let them know if you stay longer than an hour), and because the Eurostar depot flyover cuts the island platform in two, you are better off staying at the top end of platforms 2 & 3.

      would have needed a completely new set of tunnels, canal tunnels are thameslink and run at at least 8tph. Would have had a very low speed if those were used, a more sensible option for HS2 in general would have been tunneling from stratford and old oak to euston, and building euston as a through station. Would have required more dedicated planning in the mid 2000's, but would have provided a more integrated high speed network.

    Why don’t trains have batteries to power them instead of relying on overhead lines or third rail?

    • @josefstalin9068
      @josefstalin9068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Think of how large the batteries would have to be. And don’t forget what happens when one crashes.

    • @extrude22
      @extrude22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because there is no battery on earth which could do the job. Also batteries take time to charge and take up space on board a train.

    • @russellgxy2905
      @russellgxy2905 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Even if a battery was large enough to power a train, it would eat up way too much charge for a high-speed train to use. This is why the only real successful battery electrics are switch engines. Between their effective range and the amount of time needed to recharge, it'd be even less efficient than running a diesel-powered train. Also, can't believe I'm agreeing with Stalin, but think of if there was a battery leak of some kind, even without a derailment

      This technology will arrive for HS trains eventually - but I reckon it's still at least ten years away..... probably closer to 20. Some trams already use battery technology - but then they are travelling at 50mph max.....not 180mph!!

    So stupid, HS2 trains should be stopping here and terminating at Ashford International for passenger transfer to Eurostar services. Such a missed opportunity to bring Stratford International into better use.

    • @keyed_6727
      @keyed_6727 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't really practical. Would mean Stratford would have to be renovated to be secure for international stopping services, which it isn't equipped for, nor really has the space.

    • @EdgyNumber1
      @EdgyNumber1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keyed_6727 I don't mean to use Stratford as a Eurostar stop, I mean to be the go between for HS2 and HS1, stopping at Stratford and ending with the journey terminating at Ashford to allow passengers to alight at Ashford to go through the Eurostar hub -eg, Birmingham > Stratford > Ashford.

    • @nickmageebrown1981

      Lol. It Doesn't really matter, HS2 will not get built after this forthcoming election (both farage and Bo Jo want it scrapped and they will be in power by Jan 2020) and Farage wants the Channel Tunnel closed to control immigration. Sorry guys

    • @extrude22
      @extrude22 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Overflow Music Stratford International was designed to be used as a Eurostar stop hence the name. The secure areas already exist, they just aren’t being used. As for HS2, it would be very expensive to bring it to Stratford.

    • @EdgyNumber1
      @EdgyNumber1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@extrude22 As opposed to CPO'ing a bunch of London real estate for more than previously estimated, and building extra bits of station onto another.... Once again, Stratford International would be just a London stop, like Farringdon is for the Bedford-Brighton line. The end terminus being Ashford, where the HS line infrastrucure already exists. I don't really buy into the 'it costs too much argument' as the numbers have been fudged so far by recent reports.
