  • Battle of the Emulsifier: BTMS-50 v.s. Varisoft EQ 65
    Hi Beautiful Minds! A subscriber requested that I try out the emulsifier Varisoft EQ 65. I think next time, I will definitely add it to the OIL PHASE, but I still felt it was a lot of work compared to old faithful BTMS-50.
    Varisoft EQ 65 is a completely biodegradable, green ingredient. It is water soluble and can be added to the water or oil phase when constructing lotions, creams, soaps, hair conditioners, and more. It leaves a beautiful, soft feel to skin and absorbs without a greasy feel.
    Thanks for watching! 😘

    Thank you so much for trying, I am the one who requested the varisoft. I got around to trying it, and it has a learning curve and definitely doesn't detangle as well, so I prefer btms 50. However, I have figured out how to use it and it makes my hair so soft! to If you would want to try it, I have some tips:
    - It doesn't need to melt down completely in the water bath, I put it in the water or oil phase, get it to 75 -85°c and then use my immersion blender to mix just that phase, not adding the other phase yet. After using the immersion blender for a few minutes, the chunks would have disappeared, and then I can slowly add the other phase. It is very softening but not detangling in my opinion, so I would use it for a moisturizing and not detangling product or I would use another ingredient to give it more slip. The fact that it is more natural makes it worth the effort in my opinion, so I would definitely try it and see how to works, but it is not a must have. Ps, if you don't strain out the bits and use enough varisoft-eq-65, it gets thick enough, in my opinion and doesn't de stabilize, so it think the problem was that she strained it. Hope this helps!

      Thank you so much K! I completely, 100% agree with you. When I strained it, it took away from the varisoft. I will definitely try these tips and see how it works for me. I have too much left to go to waste lol. The panthenol would help add that slippery feel, but it is not "natural" haha. Varisoft will definitely take some practice and I am up for the challenge. At any rate, sorry it took so long to test it and thanks for the request. :)

      You can use centrimonium chloride it is a positively charged or cationic ingredient that behaves like a detangler.
      Cetyl alcohol will also add some glide to your varisoft EQ 65 emulsion.
      I would use both :)

    This video is so important. lol! I know it says Varisoft is soluble in water, but I never add Varisoft to the water phase. The only emulsifier I can trust in water is BTMS-50 (and BTMS-25). BTMS-50 is good enough to add all of your ingredients (except the COOL DOWN ingredients) into one container and heat it all at he same time. Using Varisoft in water seems like it'll be a headache because you have to worry about temperature and the percentage of the oil phase. So yeah, I will not be adding it to the water phase any time soon. :p
    When I used Varisoft, it appeared to make my hair dull. However, I'm now suspicious that Varisoft and another emulsifier (Olivem 1000) may have had some type of interaction which caused the dullness. One of these days I'm going to circle back and use it again with something else just to see what happens. :p

      curlytea Yes, i agree 100% lol. I will be adding it to the oil phase next time. I have heard some people say that it makes their hair too soft. Lol. I think because it aims to reduce the “greasy feel”, but sometimes that can mean dull. I love btms-50, it is so simple to work with and I love the way it makes my hair feel.
      It you circle back around, I would love to hear your outcome 😊💜

      It took Varisoft forever to dissolve in the water phase which caused alot of the water to evaporate, which I had to replace. When I mixed the water phase and oil phase, the emulsion was very runny too, and I thought I had wasted the ingredients, but I decided to finish the formulation, so when it was time, I added the cool down products. When I measured the pH, it was really low, around 3.0 so I added Arginine to increase the pH. Y'ALL, LET ME TELL YOU: I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! AS THE PH INCREASED, THE FORMULATION BECAME MORE VISCOUS! Try using Arginine with this product. I WAS SHOCKED, BUT SO EXCITED. Also, the sensory is really nice.

I made moringa and Spirulina oil infused instead of Chebe infused oil. The last time you made the Chebe hair butter I made the with avocado butter, mango and shea butter and infused the oils with Moringa and Spirulina. Turned out great I loved it my gifted some to my friend and using for her little daughter also.

    • @YayaDIYCreations
      @YayaDIYCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      rahrah alexander Hmm this is a great question. For the most part, both of these ingredients are plant derived and are found in most “natural” and “organic” cosmetic products. The btms50 has conditioning agents but is not completely “green”. While the varisoft is completely biodegradable.
      With that being said, having conditioning and softing benefits is completely different from being “healthy”. Just because it can be used for certain benefits, doesn’t mean it brings health benefits. I think the health benefits would come from the other ingredients you add to the product like antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, etc.
      Definitely something to think about and do more research on. Lol.

    Hi Yaya!
    I want to give you a few ideas if you don't mind.
    From what I have learned too many electrolytes will ruin your emulsion. Matcha Tea can double as a sports drink so that is probably one of your issues.
    When you are ready to give Varisoft EQ 65 another shot know that it is not as easy as BTMS-50 to work with it needs to be mixed with the HEATED phase 75 C
    Add all the heated phase - which includes Varisoft EQ 65 - into the water and mix well until the temperature returned to around 75˚C, mix for 4-5 min
    Remove from heat and mix until COOL
    Add cool down 40C
    Test the pH, and adjust it
    At 30 ̊C, mix for about 30 seconds to make smoothest product.
    You should always be testing your pH. So that you are sure your preservative is going to be working as well as for your emulsion stability.
    Edit* Varisoft EQ 65 in a small oil phase it can be heated up with your heated water.
    A quick glance at your recipe will help you decide when to use in water and oil ❤️

    • @YayaDIYCreations
      @YayaDIYCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diane Espinoza Thank you Diane! I definitely thought it was one of those times to use it in the water phase. My Matcha tea was already a little hot before I added it, but next time I’ll try to be more accurate. I usually check my ph at the end of my Creations and adjust according; but checking throughout sounds so much smarter! Lol. Varisoft is definitely more work! But hey, it might be worth the experimenting. And I have a whole bag, so...😩😂
      I appreciate your help! I will definitely take it all into consideration. Especially about the electrolytes. I learn so much from you all, more then off of my experience alone. Thank you 🙏🏽😊💜

    • @dianeespinoza8647
      @dianeespinoza8647 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yaya , you are welcome!
      I love the testing part of the creating almost as much as the finished product lol ALMOST! Even the fails are fun to me. I do get frustrated especially when I don't have something and I have to wait to save up for the ingredient or wait till it ships to do - over!
      I think I will love your leave in, it looks so moisturizing, my hair is so thirsty!!! I just used shampoo for the first time in yrs. I just woke up to go to the bathroom and all curls are DRY and undefined. I usually don't need a leave in 😢 cowashing. I am having scalp issues so I have to wash for now.. ugh! I have had to use an anti fungal shampoo it dried out my hair so bad I had to cut 7 in. off a few months ago. I am so FRUSTRATED 🤯🤯🤯 and frizzy.
      Sorry I drifted way off topic 😂
      I THINK, I am not sure I would have to look at your recipe, by watching the video, your oil phase was a little big. More like a cream, using Varisoft EQ 65 in the WATER PHASE, a small oil phase would be work better. I think because of its fickle and difficult blend - ability it would be best to use it in the oil phase. I will try to remember where I learned this info and give you the link. I do know with Varisoft EQ 65 you have to use a sheer mixer LONG , I do like BTMS-50 quick emulsion one blast of the blender and whamo you have cream 🎉
      I think your recipe will be awesome! And blend, blend, blend, that varisoft. 3-5 minutes. Varisoft is some fickle stuff.

    • @dianeespinoza8647
      @dianeespinoza8647 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yaya
      Hi yaya, I rewatched your video because I was thinking about you straining your cream.
      I believe the issue could be the electrolytes in your water phase, blended them for an hr and they refused to bind.
      But I wondered if it was the Aloe Vera But I was wrong, but I also worried that your Aloe was being deactivated with the high heat in your heated water phase, but that is changing the subject. LoL
      So I went to find answers on Aloe destabilizing emulsions.
      Susan Barclay- Nichols says that Aloe Vera is HARD to preserve that extract is best to be used in a emulsion. Believes that EXTRACTS should be used instead of pure Aloe of coarse using maximum usage rate of Preservative or 200:1 Aloe powder remember they will thicken your product. But doesn't mention they will deconstruct your lotion.
      However a small clip of Jane Barber text was quoted here,
      Jane Barber suggested to add xanthan gum to stabilize the Lotion.
      Jane usually mentions to use minimum 1 stabilizer / thickener, or 2 if preferred for stability. If you are formulating the products for yourself instead of selling, probably you don’t need that much stabilizer / thickener.
      So I am THINKING that Aloe Extract ( again the professional not home crafted only use extracts so I can't find info on aloe liquid ) has the issue of destabilizing lotions as well as the electrolytes based on the quote in her blog.
      I have another appt and when I return I will research that a little for myself. If I can find answers I will let you know.
      I do not use Aloe extracts in lotions because using the max preservative is not for me for self use I like staying closer to lower number on the preservative % I am not going to claim natural but less is better for me. I just spray fresh aloe let it absorb and then apply lotion.
      Back to your emulsion.
      BUT when we are formulating IF we get it to bind and it doesn't have COOTIES we USE IT UP and figure out how to make it work next time 😁
      That is the fun part.
      So now that I confused my own thinking that it was electrolytes playing a part in the ruin.
      Play with it, test with water only and make one successful emulsion with varisoft so you can understand it's complete process and then experiment away 🍀 have fun and good luck.
      Sorry I went off topic but once I start reading it is hard not to follow information!

    • @YayaDIYCreations
      @YayaDIYCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diane Espinoza Great research and thank you for referencing the information. A true researcher over here 🙌🏽🙌🏽
      I will look into this information for sure. I have experienced the wrath of aloe Vera extract and have tried the powder version. They both can be tricky with emulsions. I will do some tweaking and try it again.
      The testing part is also my favorite. Even if I fail, I love it! It all apart of the discovering and learning/researching process. I try to explain this to my viewers as best as I can. Failing can get expensive and waiting for the ingredients sucks 😩, but it is worth it! This is why i try to make semi-small batches for my viewers. I also like to keep it simple so that they can add or take away to fit their preference. Like you said, for me a certain thickness is fine, but for others; they may want more.
      I used the Xanthan gum but I made a mistake and added way too much 🤦🏾‍♀️. This could explain the waxy feel I got instead of the varisoft. I will be using it again for sure. I believe I will add it to my oil phase next time and I’ll be sure to blend it, not strain it lol. I will also omit the aloe Vera, just to focus on the emulsion part and see what happens.
      Thanks you for your time, advice, and comment 😊😊💜💜

    Varisoft 65 doens't go into the water phase, when you have a good amount of oil phase, and it is pH sensitive ingredient, the pH of the emulsion must be 4.5 in order for varisoft to work, otherwise it just separates.

    Varisoft is not water soluble. Melt it down in your oil phase and you won't have these issues.

      Hi , research the ingredient Cetrimonium chloride it is a great detangler, it helps with silicone build up and helps with rinsablity with your wash off conditioners. Keep your percentage very low as not to wash off too much of your conditioner 😁

    Hey Yaya🤗 Distilled water is filtered water? Please reply

    • @YayaDIYCreations
      @YayaDIYCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I believe it is completely different. Filtered water may still have minerals and other naturally occurring "particles" in it. Distilled water aims to take "everything out" lol. Its a different process altogether.

    Varisoft is cationic, and X-gum is anionic. Should not be in the same formula. Put the Varisoft in the oil phase...and all will be fine. The only reason the mfg suggested the water phase....was in the condition of a very low oil phase. You did not meet that criteria.

    I think, you were doing wrong about the preservative, liquid germall plus.
    You ad it too much. If you hv to ad , in a 100 ml, its only 1,5 % into ur recipe ...
    But i think i would make ur recipe , tks for the video 🙏🙏🙏🙏😊

    • @YayaDIYCreations
      @YayaDIYCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dessy Johanna I believe I did add too much. With “natural” preservatives I usually use about 2% to be effective. I switched to liquid germall plus this time and I should have reduced to 0.5 to 1%. Nice catch 😊💜

    How do know how much emulsifier to use? I feel like I'm slow because It's not clicking for me yet.

    • @YayaDIYCreations
      @YayaDIYCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      shari stewart Aww you are fine. Most ingredients have a cheat sheet that lets you know the percentage the percentage use. Btms-50 is best used at 2 to 10 percentage of your formula. However, you would have to test to see what percentage works best for you. I find that 10% is way to much and usually try to stay below 8%. However, if you don’t use enough, your emulsion could separate or destabilize. I hope this helps. 😊💜
