    It's sad that she had to be retired, but at least she's still afloat and not in a scrapyard.

      In some ways its just as bad. Hotel / permanently berthed ships tend to rot as their owners dont want to spend the money for upkeep of the hull which can go into the hundreds of millions. Case in point just look at the Queen Mary in Long Beach

      @@NorceCodine Well the operator just filed for bankruptcy. She still need millions of dollars in repairs; including a good bit to the hull, but because of how she's docked good luck doing that. The repair issues have been known for years which is why I made my original comment.

    Having cruised with QE2 as a ship's musician and so having full deck privileges, I have walked every inch of this wonderful ship. Firstly in 1974 and then a little later in 1980's. This lavish restoration is to be commended, and as such, it is a comprehensive and complementary refit. This superb info-video brings back many 'golden memories' from a time when 5 star luxury sea travel was at it's epic best! Thank you. 🇬🇧

    I sailed on QE2 in 1989 from Los Angeles - Hawaii - Tahiti - New Zealand - Australia. We made world wide news during our encounter with a cyclone between Tahiti and New Zealand. Lots of damage, windows blown out, broken arms and legs. We were greeted as (survivor) heroes by hundreds of watercraft when we arrived at Auckland and Sydney. Our British Captain's public address after the storm was - "Wasn't that a bit of a blow?". By accident I woke up about 3 a.m. wanting to be right up front entering Sydney Harbor, and I was the only passenger up on deck. The stars were amazing in pitch black and I'll never forget that strange feeling for a short while of being the only person onboard. Thanks for this superb video and I'm extremely glad that this wonderful ship is still around. (QM2 is amazing, but you never forget your first love).

    Quick Comment: Slight but distinct difference. The Queen Elizabeth 2 was a Liner, not a Cruise Ship. She was configured to do both jobs, but she was first, and foremost, a Liner.

    • @henryostman5740
      @henryostman5740 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Did an East to West crossing on her in the late 70s, the North Atlantic lived up to its reputation but the stabilizers kept her level and the champaign did not spill although a lot of passengers turned green. She was clearly a liner and handled the seas well although a little wet on the foredeck (understatement), she did hobbyhorse more than a little. She was a 'class' ship and I was tourist so couldn't go everywhere. Waiters in restaurant were English sailors, with all the necessary tattoos and bad teeth but they were good and friendly, the uppity hotel staff wasn't and treated them like a bos'n treats his ABs. No modern cruise ship could make that crossing with the speed and comfort of the QE2 and we arrived in NY on time in spite of a delayed sailing and the weather. The first bucket on my list. By the way, that pool you showed is below the water line, I remember swimming in it, rarely was the on deck pool open at sea.

    I travelled to ny from Southampton in 1980 as a 10yr old ...what memories that I can still recall to this day...such is the majesty of this great liner. ..the wild Atlantic ,the creaking and distant hum of her engines. ..the early morning arrival in ny. ..I don't think it's too much to say that I fell in love with this ship ,it had a magic whether it was the first class service or simply her beauty that captivated...even now I'm nearly 50 I can still recall that feeling...class is timeless

    Excellent video, made me shed a few tears as a former passenger who is revisiting the ship soon. QE2 inaugurated the building that is now her Lobby when it was built as Dubai's first cruise terminal around the Millennium. Also, usually, all passengers first embarked the ship through Midships Lobby if boarding in major ports like Southampton and New York - we always did so and weren't in first class. Of her type of ship, and potentially of all ships, QE2 did travel the furthest going 5.6 million nautical miles between starting her initial sea trials on 26th November 1968 and her final day at sea, under her own power, on 26th November 2008. The original Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth each didn't travel as far despite their WW2 troopship service.

Obviously as a business they couldn't keep it all original and as was mentioned it had many a makeover to keep up with the times, during its 40 years on the waves. @@visitwithus I actually ended up visiting the QE2 last week (after I watched this video) and really enjoyed it. Ate a great Indian Curry lunch at the lido restaurant and went to the great hair salon on Deck 1 to get a haircut and then continued to explore this ship. So beautiful inside. Now as a bonus, tomorrow I'll be in Long Beach, CA to visit the Queen Mary. To see the QE2 and Queen Mary with 8 days and 8000 miles from of each other will be awesome!

    l just want to thank you so much for making this film, And how professionally filmed and your narration was very well done. The reason why watching this meant so much to me and made me sad. My dad who is no longer with me was an AB seaman and did the World cruise 1976, for 6 months on her. I was only 11 years old and missed my Dad like crazy. I looked at the ship in Southampton 76, in utter amazement of the sheer size. waiting for my Dad. I never really knew what it was like inside. My dad said he used to do the spotlight on the stars when they were on stage for extra money. I imagined my dad in those bars when he was off duty. He liked a drink, what seaman didn't. So thank you. This was very emotional for me.

      Wow ! what a change since i was last on board her, back in 1982 i was one of many who worked on her conversion for the Falklands War....... building the helicopter landing platforms both at the stern and the bow. The stuff that was removed from the ship was just stacked up in a large heap on the keyside in Southampton........... during the dinner break i took a walk around and even went down into the bowels of the ship remember at the time she was taken over by the MOD hence you always carried your ID with you, also took a walk around the top deck where the very expensive suits were situated even saw the lam post bolted to the deck for when your dog fancied a pee he / she felt like home cocking it`s leg up........ so there you have it just a brief history of my time on the ship

    The beauty of the QE2 is unmatched by any other modern cruise ship, even the QM2. No other ship still has the charm of the golden age liners while still holding a modernistic appeal. A really wonderful job done by the designers. Just hope she remains that way for many years to come. She is a piece of history and we can't let her go.

      QM2 is beautiful

    • @mikipav1064
      @mikipav1064 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not so sure about QM2 not matching the beauty of QE2… i mean overall, the QE2 is maybe slightly more beautiful to look at, BUT you’re forgetting that the designer of the QM2 was forced to include many balcony cabins into the design of the QM2 because otherwise she wouldn’t be competitive against cruise ships while the designer of the QE2 didn’t had to deal with balcony cabins. The reason why most cruise ships of today are so ugly are those damn balcony cabins. But despite being forced to include so much balcony cabins, the designer of the QM2 somehow still managed to create the most beautiful ship of the 21st century. By far the most beautiful. This is very impressive and that’s why i argue that the design of the QM2 is just as much of a masterpiece as the design of the QE2 was in the 20th century.

    You’re right the Grills area of the ship was open when the ship was first re opened to the public. The Queens Grill restaurant even functioned with the exact same decor as the when the ship went out of service, and had very good food also. On a recent trip to the ship a few months ago we noticed they had just closed the restaurant and asked the staff if they planned to re open, they informed they will do some further restoration, and even plan to restore the original plates and cutlery from the grills restaurants. I hope they do it’s a stunning ship and the restoration as you mentioned is very impressive so far!

    • @THypher1
      @THypher1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter McCormack Dubai changed the decor of Queens Grill compared to when the ship finished with Cunard. New carpeting, reupholstered seats, new wall paint/coverings etc. Queens Grill Lounge (renamed to The Gin Bar in Dubai) had different seating too. Queens Grill Is currently being turned into a completely different restaurant with a new name (different to anything the space has been in the past) with the deck losing it’s step down in the centre of the room, and Queens Grill Lounge is being converted into a coffee shop/cafe area which coincidentally it was when the ship was brand new and before Queens Grill and the Queens Grill Lounge were created in the two spaces in 1972 in the refit that also added the first set of three sets of penthouses on the decks above and required more first class dining space as a result.

    What a fantastic tour, thanks for sharing. This brings back a lot of memories, as I was lucky enough to get a guided tour of the ship after her famous refit in 1994. I was building a model of the ship at the time and wrote to Cunard for some information. Their public relations manager wrote back and sent loads and loads of original photographic prints, posters, books and brochures, which I still have to this day and treasure. I remember walking around the ship was indeed very confusing, as indeed there was no main focal point. I suppose the closest thing to that is the midships lobby itself. I quite like way she is laid out, as it's uniquely 1960s in style and something a bit different from the huge atriums they all have today. I always remember there was one particular room quite low down in the ship, which was like a small tv room. The tour guide was telling us it was deliberately located so that no one could find it, so that it would be a haven of tranquility for anyone who stumbled across it! A beautiful ship, and I'm hugely relieved that she's been so well preserved and clearly well looked after. Dubai itself doesn't really appeal to me, but visiting QE2 again is definitely on my bucket list!

    Today is my 62nd birthday and your well presented video has certainly brought back a lot of memories.
    She was a fine vessel and although I have bitter sweet memories of my time working on the ship I still proud to say I did work on her.
    It's sad to see the Grand Lounge stripped of all its show fittings and the Queens Room demoted to a children's playroom but at least the ship wasn't scrapped.

    A great video and tour! Now I’m going back 20 years to when I used to work on board in the spa/salon, so my deck numbers may not be entirely accurate, but to answer your question about what lies behind the ‘spa doors’...I’m assuming you were on deck one? Behind you would have been the hairdressers, and through those doors in front of you was a small corridor with some treatment rooms that were used for facials. Down on deck 5 was where the actual Spa was and included a beautiful thalassotherapy pool as it’s centerpiece. That place was stunning. Many a night at sea I’d sit bubbling away with fellow crew members and friends from the spa department as we sipped on bubbly! The doors you filmed in your video are the original fire doors. These were always concealed in the walls during the voyage. I remember the actual doors were frosted glass. Hope this helps. My recollections are from 1997 to 1998. I was onboard for the world cruise when we found out that Carnival had bought the ship. We were all devastated at the thought that the ‘fun ship’ company might ruin Cunard with garish neon lights and tacky themed cruises. Yep, even as crew, we had some pride in the great lady.
    P.S. What they’ve done to the Queen’s room is a travesty. This was the main area to be seen at night. There’d be a live band on the stage and gentleman hosts hired by the cruise line to dance with the single ladies well into the night. And now it’s a crèche? That ship is plenty big enough to have made a crèche anywhere else. But the Queen’s room? Hopefully they rectify that! ;)

    Thank you for this wonderful video of the beautiful QE2. Enjoyed many happy family Christmas cruises on board. Such a pleasure to see her so lovingly restored.

    Truly One Of The Last Of The Great Superliners. There Will Be Another Ship Like The QE2. Simply Put, No Other Ship Comes Close.

      We totally agree David. She was the last of a truly elegant breed. ❤️

    I think the Queen Elizabeth 2's design looks timeless, the bridge design still looks the same (or better) then the ships we have today. 5:01

      4:49 However in shots like this one, you can see the aluminum detieroration occurring to the ship.

      @@lukeson8934 She got a refit in drydock a year ago and I thought she would be in slightly better shape. QE2 is still a great ship. I hope they will renovate or replace the aging aluminum on the exterior of the QE2 sometime soon. I heard in the video that they're still renovating the ship which is a good thing.

    Excellent video, nice camera work. Small point on the Casino, the machines now in place were installed during the Hamburg 1990 refit, I actaully installed many myself! It's very likely that some newer models were installed later. The original slot machines were Bally electro-mechanicals which ended up on a Casino boat in Capetown...
