Jinjer is from eastern Ukraine and were driven from their home when Russia anexxed significant parts of eastern Ukraine in 2014. This song and video is the band's angry reaction to the actions of Russia and their desire to return home. The lyrics by Tatiana are powerful and heartbreaking. I first discovered Jinjer when I saw the music video for Teacher, Teacher!, which is still my favorite Jinjer song. I will be seeing them live later this month.

I think it was brave to choose "Home Back" for a first Jinjer reaction. I love the song now, but it took me a few listens to catch everything going on. This isn't unusual for Jinjer though. I remember not really caring for "Mediator" on the first listen because, again there was so much going on. Every listen after I picked up on more and more and love that track now. For early reactions go for what others have suggested, "Teacher, Teacher" (original music video is the best in my opinion) and to see what they can do live, one of my favorites, "Pit of Consciousness" Live in Kiev.

  • @glebivanov6323
    @glebivanov6323 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Jinjer is a 13+ y.o. band with a quite diverse playlist.
Depending on your preferences there could be different suggestions.
Jinjer's earlier songs are more metalcorish, groovy and "right-in-your-face". They had a second guitarist, guitar was at the front in Jinjer's music that days.
Although they almost never used guitar solos but they have very technical guitar riffs (take a look at Jinjer's guitar playthroughs).
Then one guitarist left the band. And the album after that Jinjer hired current drummer Vlad. He's a classically trained pianist and multi instrumantalist and he became Jinjer's main composer. Drums and bass moved to the front and their music became more proggy and complicated.
Home Back is quite tough track to love it from the first listen. Very compicated time signatures. Somebody counted and it was something like 17/18 at some parts of the song.
I assume you like heavy stuff and as a true metalhead you prefer live performances. So I'd suggest you few heavy Jinjer songs from each of their albums:
    - Scissors (OMV with a live footages, I didn't see live with a good sound quality) - one of their earliest songs, very raw and groovy. 2 guitarists.
    - Who's Gonna Be The One (live at Atlas) - very groovy, quite simple, with a sudden raggae touch. It's relativily early song but this live is recorded in their current lineup. It was composed for two guitars but then remastered and bass in some sence replaces the second guitar.
    - Sit Stay Rollover (live in Melbourne) - very intense and heavy, quite tricky time signatures.
    - Teacher, Teacher (live in Melbourne) - quite proggy, with a several very different parts of the song. There's no obviously best Jinjer's song but this song is very popular among the fanbase. It's not so heavy but it shows diversity of the band and of Tatiana's vocal (including clean).
    - Pit of Consciousness (live in Kiev) - very heavy, dark, atmospheric, Meshuggah-like song with very low growls.
    - Vortex (live at Hellfest) - first single from their last album. The song with the structure "no repeatable parts at all". No verses, no choruses, maybe just a breakdown at the very end. Proggy but still enjoyable.
It was a quite heavy list.
Though Jinjer has a couple of dozens great songs and somebody could suggest you very different list and it would be the great choice too.

Roman and Eugene are great guitar/bass players. They don't have to be the center of attention in their songs. Other reviews had made mention that the band give each other space to shine. Vlad the drummer is a pianist that learned to play drum just to be in the band. Tatiana is the princess and they all work together to let her shine, and she shines brightly!

Lol jinjer doesn't use needless token guitar solos 90 percent of the time even though Roman is a super talented guitarist....it is not a question of ability but approach.....their approach is usually technical and groovy riffs, interwoven throughout the songs with complex time signature maze, while guiding along the story and the four instruments working together, which includes Tati's voicebox 😂....they can play as hard as the hardest band out or as smooth as bossanova or chilling jazz lounge 😋....all 4 of them are proficient at pulling it all of.

What would art be if everyone had the same taste? Every Jinjer song is different. Generally their music is pretty well divided among Vlad on drums, Roman on guitar, and Eugene on bass, with Roman and Eugene switching off the lead melody. They used to have a second guitarist through late 2014 but didn't replace him and instead split his job between the other three instrumentalists. A concrete example is the difference between the album version vs the Live at Atlas version of Who Is Gonna Be The One which is the only sone from the earlier era the re-composed to work as a 3-piece and is the only one they still play live. The official live of WIGBTO is basically the filmed recording session for the latter version and is one I'd recommend. Definitely one where I especially enjoy the guitar and bass work.

Jinjer doesn't make songs you can fully comprehend and appreciate with just one listen. Honestly, most of their songs don't do anything for me at first. Its just too complex and there's so much going on. Most of their albums will need dozens of listens for you to hear everything going on and catch all of the complexities. I had to play their latest album nearly everyday in my truck while driving to work to fully appreciate it. It was released in 2021 and I'm still listening to it a few times a week.
The only other bands that are like that for me are Gojira and Meshuggah. To me, the greatest metal bands to ever exist are Pantera, Gojira, Meshuggah, and Jinjer so I place them in very high regard.

  • @tackle47

Don’t know about the hollow guitars. I think for early listens it is easy to get drawn to Tatiana’s amazing vocals and the complex time signatures and changes. Upon further listens you will find Eugene on bass is a monster bassist and Roman on guitar plays amazingly intricate guitar riffs. Note almost no straight chugging or guitar solos in Jinjer’s music. Even their older material which is more like metalcore is far from formulaic. Also I look daily for reactions to certain bands including Jinjer. I did not see yours on a search, same thing happened on one of your earlier videos, think it was Nemophilia. Just not sure what is up with settings or TH-cam bs. Looking forward to seeing you further explore Jinjer. Note one last thing. Tati is an off the chart lyricist. The songs of Jinjer are quite and meaningful. This adds to their impact as she is a master of tone and range to fit the lyrics.

They don't have that distorted guitar wall of sound typical for metal bands, it's more often delicate picking and plucking and interplay between drums, bass and guitar.
Not your typical metal, so not everyone's cup of tea, but also a matter of adjusting.
Jinjer has very few songs that'd be both easy and good. Often the best ones open slowly.
Like it took me quite some time to start really appreciating Teacher Teacher.
But I like it that there's also music that's good but challenges the listener.
It's obvious whatever decisions they have in their songs nothing is there by accident. It's all very well thought out. And everyone is really good at their own thing.
Perennial (live at Wacken 2019) is lighter and a bit more typical metal song and definitely worth checking even tho over time the weirder Jinjer works might overshadow it.

  • @fortyfortytwo759
    @fortyfortytwo759 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think Pisces is good if you’re looking for technicality. In Vortex, the drummer throws in a lot of awesome ghost notes and that. Perennial shows more from the bass, but overall, I think Pisces is a good showcase for Jinjer. It’s what got them their record deal.

  • @badm0t0rf1nger

The bonkers bossa nova Alice in Wonderland -themed chill passage in this is touched by true #Genius imho. Talk about dropping something *totally* unexpected as your chilled pause in between slabs of angular proggy syncopatedAF aggression.... & yet by the time you get to the end of the song, nothing else could fit into the place of said bokers bossa nova!!
Vocal talents aside, Tatiana doesn't get the respect she's due for creating vocal lines which sit so well with the music the lads have created - they hand her a final demo of the music & she creates from scratch on top of that! o_O
Try "Vortex", their thru-composed first single from the last album. Vlad, their classically-trained-pianist-to-trade drummer, composed ~80% of the music for that last "Wallflowers" album.... & imho it's a *peach* !! Roman's guitar lines start out clean, as does Eugene's bass work, but as we are drawn into the titular vortex thru the song.... well, if you'd like a clear demonstration of what was making you feel off-kilter thru the track, I recommend giving Eugene's bass playthrough vid a watch straight after the OMV - it's a 5-string drop-A #MasterClass, showing *all* the technique, yet always in service to the piece. It's also a blueprint for how a deeply musical bassist can make a single-guitarist heavy band sound HUGE! ;)

@@TheWolffAndTheMelody "Home Back" is for sure one of their more dense & unsettling compositions.... which is very fitting for the subject matter. These guys were directly affected by the fighting around their homes in the Donbas. I wonder what percentage of "the West" understand that tehnically Russian, Russian-speaking, folks in the Donbas were being shelled by the CIA-&-US-StateDept-sponsored Kiev regime for 8yrs to the tune of ~13,000 dead before Russia stepped in? If you check the dates, "Home Back" was released to address that fighting way before the Russian intervention.
But back to the music.... they used to be more straightforward metalcore. Punchy, solid, worthy, metalcore, but after Vlad joined, things got more interesting. More brain-engaging time signatures, more crazy fun syncopation, & if you listen thru the last "Wallflowers" album, there are some great thru-composed pieces with variations on motifs with differing dynamics etc, more like classical composition rather than standard verse-chorus-verse-breakdown-chorus formulae. Hence I'm recommending you give the "Vortex" single a listen! ;)

As a prog-rock & prog-metal kind of guy, I actively avoid pop and country. However, if you want something Country-adjacent that doesn't suck, the Eagles "Desperado" (1973) album is excellent. Lots of goodness, yet Country-Rock. The tracks "Desperado", "Tequila Sunrise", "Doolin-Dalton/Desperado (Reprise)" and "Bitter Creek" are all well worth a listen.
Also, Jinjer has been a revelation for me. They are my favourite metal band and have been for the last three or four years.
Jinjer's Tatiana convinced me that extreme metal vocals don't have to sound like vomiting - so many bands do growling quite badly but there are a few standout talents (including Randy Blythe, Melissa Bonny, Lauren Hart) who seem to have mastered the art. These are people who can growl and enunciate simultaneously. Tatiana is outstanding - "a colossus among metal vocalists" as a music teacher/reactor once put it.

Quite often Eugene takes on the traditional role of the guitar with his lead lines, apart from laying down the bass fundamentals, while Roman creates intricate harmonic weaves. So their roles are not what you're generally used to in metal.

Speaking to your assessment of the guitar/bass...This song is not the greatest example of either, though I love this song. A) the only person in the band with any formal music education is the drummer (Vlad) and he is a classically trained pianist. B) They tend to be a little understated as individuals, and (more so in other songs) their strength is in their tightness, and synergy. They truly tend to make a sound together that is so much greater than the sum of their parts. Their new album coming out soon is supposed to showcase Roman (guitar) a little more, so we'll see what that does. As for Eugene...I recommend "Who Is Gonna Be the One" live to see a little more of what he can do. He's a phenomenally unique bassist, with a very identifiable sound once you get to know it. As for a good example of the band just being a tight AF progressive/Djent...almost mathcore powerhouse, check out "Teacher Teacher"...I would check out the official studio music video, but there is also a great recording of them doing it live in Melbourne 2020. In fact, that entire Melbourne set is a powerhouse. The sound quality is amazing...just the perfect venue for them.
MORE JINJER. They are so bad ass. Tatiana is a true legend. She cannot possibly get enough credit for how talented she is. She might be one of the greatest frontpeople of all time...any genre. She has it all. Sings like an angel, screams like a demon, she's stunning, her stage presence is captivating...she just owns it.

Looks like you already have a lot of suggestions. The number of good Jinjer songs on TH-cam is pretty high. Like for every band there are plenty of terrible "fan in the audience with a crappy video camera or phone" videos out there but if you stick to the official live stuff and music videos you won't be disappointed. The list is long so I usually just post a link to a playlist I put together which I play on a regular basis. th-cam.com/play/PLhlYsqoR9XLEpHTbaOovrpa1p8L2uZ81G.html

Just as a heads up it's pretty much a two man project that has two other touring members, bassist and guitarist. The singer writes and does all the electronic production, piano work, and guitar. The only other studio member is their sick drummer.

Everything Jinjer does is with purpose...if something seems distant or "lacking", it's because the focus is deliberately pointed toward something else...in this song, it's more focused on lyrics and drums with lead and bass supplementing the sound...this is a bit of an odd song to introduce yourself to the band with...Tatiana writes and recites poetry while thrashing to prog metal...there is very deep meaning in the lyrics (most of the time)

6:40 - It's not your ears, maybe you're accustomed to the types of Metal productions that Jinjer consciously stay away from. Did you hear Vlad's snare sound or what Eugene, the bass player, was doing? Not to mention how Roman, the guitar player, manages to fill the space while being the only guitar in the band. Where do you find that in Metal?

@@TheWolffAndTheMelody - I've been a fan of heavier types of music pretty much since their onset in the mid 70's but I stopped listening to Metal since the late 2000's exactly because of the production. Everybody started using sample replacement in drums, everybody "discovered" a certain type of guitar sound and started using it and to me, Metal became boring and unlistenable.
Gojira got me back when I discovered them in the early 2010's and even their early Progressive Death Metal style was to my liking. Why? Because they sound different. The same thing captivated me when I discovered Jinjer in 2016, after the 2nd guitar player, and the only founding member remaining, left the band in 2015 and Vlad joined: in a world where Djent was king, they were a breath of fresh air. My only "gripe" about them is their King of Everything album, exactly because of the overproduction and use of sample replacement.

This song is extremely heavy for a Jinjer song and indeed a bit "hollow". There's no comfort of the usual metal mid range or even a real chorus and musically the song's left kind of unresolved.
Which, considering kids in Ukraine still flee to basements to take cover from air raids and the band's homes are still not safe is most likely a very intentional decision.
This is not a song that's meant to feel good.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin ปีที่แล้ว +2

On other songs they often switch who's covering the distorted mid range. When Tati's growling the guys often pick or pluck to make it less muddy and then go to distorted sound when she's doing high cleans.
Their stylistic choices are often unusual, but they don't *need* a second guitarist to fill the spectrum where they *want* to fill it.
