Atago and her sisters Takao, Maya and Chokai were probably the best of the Japanese heavy cruisers and often served as flagships. Three of the four ships of the class were sunk or put out of the war by subs Darter and Dace at the very start of the Battle of Leyte Gulf at Palawan Pass. Atago, Maya were sunk and Takao damaged so badly she ended the war in a repair slip at Singapore.
IJN Mogami post heavy cruiser refit carried heavier armor than Atago (5.5-inch belt vs 5-inch belt), though Mogami only carried twelve torpedoes compared to Atago's sixteen

The Takao class always had nice lines; they look more like modern Aegis Ticonderogas with their angular, flat & tall superstructures but with 203mm guns instead of VLS.
8 years later. Atago still quite a decent ship. Those deck armor literally the reason why she is still an impressive cruiser. She fit with IJN CA and CL Playstyles. Literally the best Cruiser among IJN Cruiser premiums. No, Azuma and Yoshino are Battlecruisers. There’s no such thing as Large Cruiser. That’s what Cheese Burger Fantasy trying to tell you. Atago is the only CA that cannot be citadeled from any AP calibers at range. She have better deck armor than any Tier X cruisers out there. Heck, she have Zao level of HP. The only thing making Atago not being the best Cruiser in the game, is how easily modules can be damage and poor range. Overall, she is pretty good ship even in today standards.

Beautiful lines, strong guns, lovely torpedoes, decent AA. Lots of options on kills and gear. If played with Yamato's and Musashi you get a beauty of a squadron. And she is a love to drive.

Wow, a balanced premium cruiser. That's a first.
Aurora has a crap ton of armour for it's class and tier. Same issue as the St. Louis.
Murmansk outclasses it's counterparts in almost every way.
Atlanta is one of the most broken things ever as of the HE shell overbuff [to which they need a hard nerf; less damage and less chance to cause fires] It's only saving grace is it's not immune to critical damage, unlike Cleveland.
But Atago perfect. It's a perfect cruiser; The anti-air, the guns, the torpedoes, ect.
Seems like I always have lots of fun when I bring Atago into battle. It's great for training commanders and the thing is a credits factory to boot.
Unique unrealistic camouflage that is .... seriously .... but hey atleast Pan paka pan~

The Atago is awesome, if your looking for a premium right its not just playable, like most of Wargamings premium vehicles, its pound for pound one of the best if not the best ship in the game.
Mikhail Kutuzov and Tirpitz are better
+MetalGoby This is categorically false, the Atago is the best tier eight premium. The Kutuzov is an OK ship but its simply too squishy and too easy to see to be effective when it's not heavily supported. The Tirpitz it, is great but it simply isn't as good as the Atago.
The Atago is a bloody monster, to start off it doesn't have 40k HP as it says on the stats, it has 60k EHP cause of the heal. Its ludicrously fast to the point where you can't catch it or get away from it, it can easily define the terms of any engagement. It's got a powerful weapons set up with ten guns with that ludicrously effective Japanese HE and decent AP more than capable of penning cruisers at max range and eight forward facing torpedo's to complement the standard rear facing ones. Finally it is insanely stealthy, a max skill point captain and the right equipment will give it a 9km surface detection range, this combined with its speed and powerful armament basically makes it the grim reaper of DDs as they won't know it's there until it's in optimum range and then it's to late. Oh, it can also stealth fire this combined with its speed means it can easily burn any larger ship to the waterline without ever being seen.
So sure it's got lackluster armor and a big citadel but you still have to go broadside for most ships to pen you and with the Atago speed and concealment you can easily minimise that risk. Basically you have to play like a potato for anyone to have a consistent chance of doing citadel damage.
If destroyers aren't crapping themselves over the possibility of being ambushed by you and everyone else isn't tearing their hair out over the ship that keeps disappearing then popping back up with more health than it disappeared with your doing it wrong.
As I said this is the strongest tier eight premium and, at worst, it's the third best tier eight overall.
lolroflroflcakes Remember that the Kutuzov has the smokescreen ability. With superintendent skill it can nave multiple charges. It can use it very easy to invisifire (fire from invisibility). Atago can as well invisifire, but that window between the gunrange and spoting limit is pretty little, If it fires. The Kutuzov has better rate of fire and higher acurracy on it's guns. Atago is stealthy and has better torpedoes, but is much more predictable. Atago is almost always spoted to launch torpedoes, so a player who plays well, can dodge the torpedoes verry easy, even If the torps are not spoted. I battled 2 Atagos with my Tirpitz and i killed them both. Also, Atago is not a good destroyer hunter. Even If it has good cammo and speed for a cruiser, the destroyers have better cammo and will spot it in time to escape from it. The rate of fire is also a con for destroyer hunting. But do not get me wrong. Atago has less guns (Atago:10 ; Kutuzov:12), but higher in caliber, so an acurate salvo can do high damage on another cruiser or battleship. Kutuzov is a HE spammer, and is a better destroyer hunter and battleship arsonist. On both cruisers, the citadel boxes are sensitive. The Atago has them smaller, but above the waterline, so it can be citadeled verry easy from close encounters, the Kutuzov has a bigger citadel box, but in has it under the waterline, so long range salvo can citadel him reliably. Atago is more like a brawler and flanker, and the Kutuzov is a supporter and a invisifireing machine, due to it's smokescreen ability. Kutuzov is also better at killing planes. In my opinion, they are both good choice of ships. I saw Kutuzov killing Atagos in a dogfight, and Atagos killing Kutuzovs in the same manner. It depends on playstyle. If you let me say, these powerful cruisers are equal in power. Everyone has it's advantages and disadvantages.As for Tirpitz, he is a pure battleship brawler and a cruiser sniper.
My top tier 8 premium ships are these: 1.Tirpitz; 2.Kutuzov/Atago

Saying the Atago is not an effective destroyer hunter is just plain wrong, a destroyer that often gets jumped by an Atago at 9 km is essentially doomed, especially since sixth sense is going to be default you will always know when your close to a destroyer and you wont need to see it to run it down.
It does not matter that the Kutuzov get smoke it provides at most three charges and the Kutuzov is so large it can often by hit by blind fire into the smoke if you try to stop in it and fire on the other team. Further more at high tiers a cruisers life blood is its ability to break contact and maneuver something that the Kutuzov struggles with given its 14 km surface spotting distance. This means that if you use smoke exclusively as a gtfo button you will only be able to disengage from another ship out for your blood a maximum of three times in one game and this is completely insufficient especially considering the Kutuzov's limited health pool when compared to the Atago.
I won't really mention AA as the Atago's is sufficient for self defense when one considers its fighter and there are so few carriers in game anyway.
Finally the number of ships you are capable of killing is not an effective metric for the power of that ship all it proves is they were driven by a couple of potato level players. The Atago is just a more self sufficient ship, i.e. more able to carry in a random battle and that means its just flat out better than the Kutuzov.
If two equally skilled players encounter each other, one in a Kutuzov/Tirpitz and one in an Atago the Atago will win, its as simple as that.
You are welcome to your opinion but it is still wrong, they are in no way equal in power.
As I said that is not a reliable metric for ship strength just awful determining how awful players are at any given point. The Atago has a high skill floor but it is clearly the better ship as I have explained exhaustively. The Kutuzov might be fairly spry but it simply does not have the concealment rating to escape a situation in a timely manner.
FYI its a good thing to use smoke as a get out of trouble button, even if your quick as long as your visible you'll still be taking fire and that increases your chances of taking damage where as the Atago won't be.
Only premium ship that's balanced after all these years

Yeah true , but the concealment of the ship is insane. Use that to your advantage and you will feel like a ghost. Phasing in and out of their detection range and landing high damage precise shots.

True that clevelands are the only cruisers i find really anoying as bb driver ( at the North Carolina atm) Its stupid the clevelands is basicly the only cruiser that can do really well in battles that are much higher tier without beeing driven by a good player.
xflamousz i was going down the IJN destroyer line and edventualli i got bored almost at tier 7. The fact that you use same torps for 3 tiers is kinda annoying. So i quit my hatsuharu nd started going IJN cruiser line, but they seem to be worse in many ways than american ones. It's like saying, here take these torps that will be useful every 5th game, but we will give you less hp, worse AA, worse guns and make your hull cidatel city :/

It is funny how the premium ships in WoWs aren`t following the trend set by WoT.
They aren`t weaker than their tier line equivalents in any way. The Atago is the perfect example. It is basically a Myoko (the former tier 8!) but with much better anti aircraft armament and torpedoes. The Mogami with the 8 inch gun "upgrade" is a inferior ship in almost any way and even the Ibuki does not have much of an advantage over this ship.
the mogami has better fire rate and slight amor advantage so.... also Its turrets are placed in a Way that make angling - one of the most important things in this game- much more effective since the angle is sharper.

I was talking about the "upgraded" Mogami with the 203mm guns. The 155mm guns clearly are superior in DPM. The turret arrangement is better, that is true, but it doesn`t come close to the torpedo advantage the Atago has.
Schnaqer fair enough. but to be fair, if they were weaker than normal ships, it would punish them more in WoWS where you can't hide behind a rock or a corpse.
ships in WoWS tend to share the same guns tier 6-10. and so theres very few diferences.
also, consider this. Atago is nice and all, but Mogami's citadel is alot smaller and more armored than Atago. by a large margin!

ships in WoWS, prems included all need to be on the same level, as if you tried to make a prem in WoWS like you did in WoT, you'd have the Kuma in tier 7. and that would be death.

Multiple reasons mostly pertaining to not having the industry to out-produce American shipbuilding, along with various problems with leadership such as the constant and perhaps toxic rivalry between the Army and the Navy to name a few. Increasingly effective submarine warfare on the American's side also helped greatly to choke the nation of vital wartime resources such as oil and steel, so all military units suffered across the board.

You wouldn't know it so shoot at one. Ive burried both AP and HE from my North Carolina into the belly and gun tower from almost 4-5kms away, and fuck all happens. I swear they don't exist.
Guys give me some advice for Fuso with first body cause ı can only shoot 13km far and when ı try to get close enemy starts to firing at me and kill me with 20 shot cause first body's armor so bad PLS help me
use the environment and angle yourself towards the enemy so you will get closer and closer without Him beeing able to score citadels On you
upgrade hull and when you are reloading don't show your side armor to enemies

Yamato is pronounced incorrectly by the narrator, despite the Japanese historians pronouncing the name clearly (YA-ma-to, not ya-MA-to). And Atago is also pronounced incorrectly (AH-ta-go, not ah-TA-go). WG Narrator: you really should consult a native speaker if you're pronouncing something in a language you're not familiar with. It's a nice video overall, though!
