    Hello there. Well, I do consider myself a "movie person" and I have seen, so far, all of the movies you have reacted to. Your in depth analysis at the end is probably my fav part.
    Like you, if I like a movie, I do tend to dig in and read up on the movie, the actors, etc. Plus, being a musician, the music is a huge part for me as well.
    I have found that you do find bits of information that I did not have most of the time. Very cool to learn new things about these older and sometimes, much older movies.
    You do a fantstaict job. Looking forward to your next video.

    I think I need a video of Whimsory covering Marilyn Manson! Also, I think Satan only sounds like that for all the smoke in hell. If he spends a few hours with us, their throat may clear up. As for not liking the villain, I think that is what you did.... "There are no good people in this movie." That means John Wick is not a good guy; he is a villain. And I heard the best advice ever: "You don't need to talk so much to be interesting." Also, John Leguizamo is a truly brilliant, yet, underrated actor. He has played everything from a hellspawned clown demon to a Mario brother, to a sloth and Aurelio! And he was super funny in "House of Buggin'" which was a short-lived sketch comedy series in 1995!

    The 'Animal vs Human' dying issue, is actually an extremely telling event regarding human nature.
    At some level, we all know we are culpable moral agents. At some level we all recognize that we regularly fail our own morality & so are 'Responsible'. But Animals are NOT responsible. They are true innocents. Only Children and perhaps some of the mentally disabled equal that. So violating such innocence is appalling & only those who have burned their conscience to a cinder don't respond to such an act of horror.

    The coins represent a form of currency used within the secretive world of assassins. These coins are not regular currency but rather a symbol of trust and loyalty among members of the assassin community. They serve as a means of payment for services rendered and can be exchanged for various goods and favors within the underground network. Additionally, the coins are also a mark of respect and recognition among assassins, signifying their status and reputation.

    32:51 I actually have a theory about Helen Wick, and it makes a few things make more sense in the movie.
    Theory: Helen Wick was a Veterinarian or Veterinary Assistant, she had been sick (most likely cancer, my mom had cancer and one day just collapsed like in the movie). One night John decided to surprise her and pick her up from work, as they walked to the car to go home she collapsed.
    That explains #1: Why she gifted John a puppy and was able to arrange Daisy’s delivery, #2 Why John crashed the SUV there, #3 How John knew the Veterinary Clinic was there to patch himself up, and #4 Why at the end when John’s walking with the puppy, it’s the same location where his wife collapsed.

    Since you mentioned how the assassins all have rules and regulations within their society, you'll be happy to know that they continue adding to this aspect of the story in each film. For an over-the-top action film, they do a lot of world building that ends up giving us an understanding of how things work without ever dragging the pace down.

      @DoremiFasolatido1979 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even as wild as it gets sometimes, it never quite jumps the shark, and I feel like those "rules" of the underworld have a lot to do with that. The world they've built is fantastical in some ways, but very grounded. It's internally consistent, and doesn't usually directly violate what we understand. What happens is extremely improbable sometimes, but never quite truly impossible.
      I feel like the F&F franchise would've come off far better in total in the hands of Stahelski and his crew.

    The director uses a very powerful narrative device in this movie. The death of the dog justifies EVERYTHING that John does from that moment on and the audience not only agrees but wants blood for that atrocity.
    And it's even worse when you realize that the little dog crawled across the floor to seek comfort from John in its last moments.

  • @TheMule71

    John Wick kills no civilians in this movie. It's kinda implied that the underground world he belongs to doesn't really interact with "normal" people. The reason Jimmy the cop "leaves him be" it's not because he's corrupted, it's because what happened there belongs to John's world, and not to the cop's one, as the dead people were clearly assassins (from Jonh's world). Remember the movie is complete fiction (more like a comic book) so realism is out of the question here. In a way, Iosef crossed a line by killing the dog, as she was clearly innocent.
    It's also hinted by the fact "he's the one you send to kill the f. Boogey Man" (not normal people).
    Anyway great reaction as usual!

    Without any spoilers, they dropped that concept for a more video-game/superhero style over-the -top-action approach. A lot of people love it, and even I think they are still very entertaining movies, but it's not my cup of tea compared to the first one.

    I'm assuming that you already noticed/researched these and just didn't mention, but just in case, couple more "obligatory" details that you might find interesting:
    Marcus only accepts the contract on John after asking if it is exclusive (or open).
    Francis actually responds in russian that he has lost "20 kg" - the number of guards inside.
    Also the russian here is pretty broken and the on-screen subtitles quite "creative". In the end Iosef just starts saying something akin to "f*** you" (my russian is pretty much limited to swear-words, but thats like 90% of the russian in this movie anyway).

      I don't think this can be called a spoiler about the next movie: when the Jewish banker says to John in Yiddish, "Zei Matsliach...", it's VERY loosely translated as, "Happy hunting...". The actual translation is "Be successful...". I'm not sure what the reasoning was to change the translation like that.

    the john wick franchise is very entertaining. they plainly, and admittedly, took various ideas from the "bourne trilogy", that begins with "the bourne identity" (2002). there are now 5 or more bourne films, but the "trilogy" , being the first 3, establish its narrative and the character. the many fans who prefer the john wick series, can only feel that way from loving CONSTANT action. in the opinion of myself, most movie critics, and i'm sure, YOU whimsory, the bourne movies are better. 2 points to establish for me now, how and why are they better, and how do i know you would prefer them, since i dont know you. the bourne films, while having several great action scenes per movie, are far, far more character driven than the near-literally nonstop action of the john wick films. (very minor spoiler, the rest of the j.wick films are even more action-packed than the first). some people (many) love that. i can say that everyone who prefers j the john wick films does so for the fighting , and will start in about "he's more badass". bourne is related to the cia, not murder-for-hire. the specialized fight-training that keannu took for john wick is in weapons and related tactics, matt damon's training for jason bourne is mostly in "kali", the phillipine martial art based on changing your style to fit the current environment in which one is fighting. since you are the only reviewer on youtube doing multiple rewatches and genuine research before making your commentary, then having really insightful things to say about the characters afterward, im certain you would prefer bourne also. you gave a reasonably complete summary of this film in 10 words. and correctly pointed out more than once, "all these people suck".

    41:04 that’s the thing about john wick, it’s what sets him apart from the other Assassins, he has a set of kinda twisted morals. The women were “innocent”, the men that worked for Viggo weren’t innocent and all fair game to John, hence in the club scene where he’s exposed and aiming at Josef, he kept eye contact and shot the guy he had pinned to the ground. An unspoken message, “I’m going to kill you and take back what I have given your Father”. The impossible task Viggo spoke of that John accomplished laying the foundation of what they were then, was the “Elimination” of the bosses of all Viggo’s rivals in one night.
    So technically John gave Viggo his “business”.
    Then again he didn’t kill everybody that worked for Viggo, he spared Francis the Doorman, mainly because Francis told John (in code) how many “hostiles” there were inside the club.

    What's great about John Wick is there is a gamut of characters...real depth of character, even for some of the villains, as well as one-dimensional stereotypes like the son...a product of every kind of entitlement imaginable. John Wick is just solid all the way around. Also, JW may have killed a lot of people, but in his defense, they did try to kill him first- and everyone knows that if someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill 'em right back.

  • @suflanker45
    @suflanker45 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The best thing about this movie is the twist on the main bad guy in action movies. Usually the bad guy is an arrogant overconfident prick who finds out the hard way when fighting the protagonist. In this movie Viggo knows how bad his son screwed up in the beginning and is already on the defensive. As a father he's trying to save his son but knows he's a dead man.
    Your breakdown of the criminal organization in this movie was spot on. In reality the Mafia had rules/code you had to follow. The mob wanted to keep their operations under the table and not involve civilians. The local cops knew what was going on and the mob would pay them off but the mob would keep their operations quite and not harm civilians. The local cops knew if a mob guy got out of line the mob boss would deal with him and know where to dump the body so it would never be found. Bootlegging, gambling, tobacco and running unions were ok but dealing drugs was strictly forbidden by mafia leadership. In the end it was the US Government (The DOJ and FBI) that brought down the mob in the US.
    To find out more about the mafia you should watch The Godfather trilogy and the movies Goodfellas and Casino. The last two movies are based on true stories.

    Good points made on the dog, the trope is very real. It's based on "save the cat". Have a character literally save a cat, like superman [1978], or save an innocent; kids, women, bystanders, what have you. "kick the dog", like here, is the inverse of that trope. Literal examples like american psycho [2000] and prisoners [2013]. But variants that are very common is have the main villain hurt or kill a henchman.

  • @canadianicedragon2412
    @canadianicedragon2412 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, the movie starts sad and hurts... but it is his motivations... so it is important.
    I love that they don't really "explain" John Wick at the start it is just a series of dialog like:
    "well he stole John Wick's car and killed his dog" "Oh"
    or Vigo calls John, who says nothing, not even hello. Lawyer "What did he say?" Vigo "Enough"
    We know that he has a rep, and we know it is impressive without seeing anything at this point.
    You need to watch this movie for the code, and the "subtext". Three examples... 1) Dinner reservation is body disposal. 2) Marcus asks is the contract exclusive? only when he hears it is open, aka others will be hunting John, does he "accept" it. 3) Francis, saying he lost weight... when really saying how many were protecting Josef. Humans tend to have done something to get killed the puppy was complete innocent who deserved good not death.
    Enjoyed your reaction ... and the kitty cameos. :)

    Idk if the whole "violence isn't the answer" thing holds up. I mean people always say "diplomacy is better" but seem to forget what is backing that diplomacy the vast majority of the time... the capacity for violence.
    Yeah it should be a last resort MOST of the time, but I think people put too fine a point on it. Especially in the case of non-lethal violence. Some people need to get hit.
    And anyone that kills a tame/domesticated animal that hasn't done anything wrong, let alone a pet, deserves whatever comes their way. *Daisy was better than every single person John put down* and I stand by that.

    I appreciate the watching it several times outro.
    Mostly, you get immediate feedback which is a rehash of plot points. Nothing necessarily wrong with that.
    This "I've rewatched and thought this through" outro is preferable in my mind.
    I've had many poorly thought through opinions about movies 10 minutes after, but, as a general rule, those a day later are better. You gotta sleep on it.
    I think I respond better to "a day later" opinions than to those expressed directly thereafter seeing it which nearly everybody else does. Gotta give it some time to sink in. My initial response is often too simple. Give me a day and I can see more.
