    Just moved here. Already predicting my biggest mistake will be that I can do it all this 1st year.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  ปีที่แล้ว

      That happened to me too. It did help me to find what grows best here however.

      No, it takes quite a few years to get everything done.
      We’ve been working on our garden areas for 3 years and we’re about 1/2 done.
      Then we have a Mtn side to tier and plant to hold our Mtn.

    Yes. Having 2 properties, water is key. 1 property is dry and sandy with a clay base and the property where my home is, is along a river. My plants closest to the river required me to build on a base of rocks. Maybe that will help someone who has to deal with water wicking into beds and drowning plants. A layer of rock will greatly help in areas with high water levels.

    I live in Central Florida and think our weather is similar. I harvested most of my broccoli over the past week. It's rated for 48 days if you want to count backwards to see when I planted. It has grown well for me the past two years. Lucky very few bugs. They seem to do best under the shade of my pecan tree which won't leaf out for awhile yet.

    My biggest mistake was planting perennials in an area that has Bermuda grass. The Bermuda grass either kills off the plants or spreads into other plants around the perennials and you can't get rid of it until you dig out all the plants to dig out the Bermuda grass.

    • @lynnbetts4332
      @lynnbetts4332 ปีที่แล้ว

      OMG, Bermuda grass. It can find its way under tarps and 4' away into your garden. It wants all that good soil you are putting in your beds. Constant struggle.

      Vining grasses are the bane of my gardening existence. I have had good success with putting blackout silage tarps over it. It took me 4 years to get it all out of my tilled garden beds.

    I think I've made every single mistake on this list. I know why most people in this area, south Central Mississippi, grow things that love the heat, like southern peas, butter beans, and corn. Sometimes the other plants just give up in the heat. But I'm stubborn, and am going to keep trying, lol.

    Location was super important for me as stay at home mom with homeschooling kids. I needed to be able to go out to the garden but easy access keeping eye on the house. Our garden is around the side and back of our house they can open a window and easily get to me if they need to.

    I'm in 8b in Texas too. Working on a shade system for my tomatoes and peppers this year. Hope it works. Hoping it also helps with the squash/stink bugs. Once they invade, I get nothing. They go after both the tomatoes and peppers.

      I also live in 8b area, im having a shading problem for my tiny garden. So I went crazy with seeds because I know somethings gonna die. I bought an acorn squash and saved the seeds, now Ive many seedlings. My issue is I cant dig very deep in my yard to put posts for shade. I gave up so Im trying to use sunflowers as a wall of shade. Heres hoping!

    Does anyone know how to grow good sweet corn?
    Last year our plants and ears looked Great, but the kernels never formed.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Any Tips?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to plant a lot of corn to get good kernel formation. You can help it along by shaking the top of the plant so the pollen falls on all the ear tassels.

    Does your dog do that 24/7 Seems nearly every video he's running circles around your coop...lol. Our big dog was salivation over our little chick's. My wife took a folding metal chair and bent it over his head. And he's never done that to any of our birds again. So it was very effective. Just staying.......Jeff

      He only really does it when I am outside working. He wants to show me that he is working too....trying to herd the chickens. He was a rescue and I have given him a few whacks on the head for bothering other animals but he just won't learn.

      @@CountryLivingExperience Collie breeds herding instinct are so engrained that they will never stop. I was lucky have a Collie that herded the chickens gently into their pen every evening and lay at the gate untill i closed it. Her BFF was a rooster named Copper.

      @@Galaxy-gj9wy That's awesome. I wish mine was behaved with the chickens. He eats them if they get out of their pen. He was a rescue and I have never had the ability or time to train him.
