I got the chance to talk to Gwen back in the day. No Doubt had a show at UC Irvine back in 1994. I saw Gwen and Tony on the campus. They told me they were performing later on. I never heard of them before. Gwen seemed really sweet and down to earth. They gave a great performance. Gwen had great stage presence. A year later I saw the video Just a Girl on MTV. I was shocked when I realized it was them! I had no idea they would blow up and sell over 15 million records. I regret not getting an autograph. But it was nice to talk with them for a few minutes Very few people get to have that type of experience with future celebrities.
Gwen Stefani joined her brother Eric Stefani's band No Doubt as the singer, when she was just a teen from O.C, California ... She would sing female vocals and John Spence was the male singer. Tony Kanal was an Indian American who joined No Doubt on bass... he was Gwen's first bf. They were a couple for several years. Unfortunately, tragedy hit No Doubt when John Spence took his own life... Eric Stefani put his sister Gwen up front and the band was eventually signed in the early 90's after drummer Adrian Young and guitarist Tom Dumont joined... No Doubt released a debut album in 1992, but it didn't sell. By 1995, Eric Stefani announced that he was leaving No Doubt after the 2nd album was recorded... and Tony Kanal ended his relationship w/ Gwen. As a result, Gwen wrote a lot of lyrics about her heartbreak on the 2nd album 'Tragic Kingdom'... "Don't speak" was aimed squarely at Tony Kanal. It became a #1 single in 1996. Gwen and Tony remained friends... Tony even co-wrote music on Gwen's first solo album. Gwen later wrote a No Doubt song 'Simple kind of life' about her first husband - Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale... she wrote songs about their divorce later on too.
A lot of their songs from Tragic Kingdom were about her relationship with bass player Tony Kanal. Lot of No Doubt songs. Just a girl, Spiderweb, Hey Baby, Underneath it all, Hella good, Sunday Morning, New, Ex Girlfriend, and their cover of It's my life.
I must disagree with Underneath It All, which is from the Rock Steady album, and is about falling in love with Gavin Rossdale when they were touring together; it's a cute love song, not about heartbreak.
Gwen’s a valley girl from Cali, and she’s always had such a unique sound. She always kills it! The video and the live performance of this song are worth checking out too!
Gwen Stefani definitely has a distinct voice. She was born in Fullerton, California. This song is about the relationship lead singer Gwen Stefani had with bassist Tony Kanal for seven years. She's saying that what they had was real, and it's a pity it couldn't last - don't bother explaining because it hurts. It didn't work out between Stefani and Kanal, but she didn't give up on musicians. She married Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale in 2002; when they split in 2015, she took up with country star Blake Shelton, her co-star on the singing competition The Voice.
She grew up in Abaheim, Ca. If you watch the video Sunday morning that whole video was shot in anaheim at her moms house and spiderweb video was recorded at her dad's house in anaheim ca
@@jnyce71 I didn't say she didn't grow up in Anaheim, CA. Just she was born in Fullerton. I know she grew up in Anaheim, I should have mentioned it also. Thanks for clarifying.
This song really shows off Gwen's voice and song writing. You can hear the raw emotion in this song. She's much like Stevie Nicks as in having to contend with heartbreak and break up with a member of the band and having to still perform with them. A talent like hers doesn't come around very often.
She is from Orange County, California. That is where Gwen and her brother formed the band. The bass player is the one she wrote this song about. I can't imagine being him and staying in the band and performing this one particular song. Reminds me of Fleetwood Mac whose Rumors album was about the breakups within the band same kind of thing
Asia & BJ, Was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 40th Grammy Awards. Great vocal performance. They lost to Eric Clapton "Change the World" and Jamiroquai- Virtual Insanity" respectively.
Gwen is a stick of dynamite! She is amazing onstage! Her lyrics hit you in the heart on this one. You can really feel the longing for things to go back.
You should watch the official video - it shows that the song has a double-meaning of her breaking up with the band because she was becoming the famous one and it caused tension. So in the video, she sings it to the whole band who seem upset with her fame.
Everyone can relate to this song at one time in there life's. 'Running' is probably my favorite no doubt song. Gwen got one of those voices that can't be duplicated. With artist who sound so much alike she stood out.
Throughout the modern history of so called "torch" songs, it always seems that when a song is played using "minor" chords, it evokes a feeling of tragedy, sympathy, or just plain sadness. This is true with Don't Speak. Using regular chords would make this song sound too happy. I've only been aware of this song for about one month: 25 years after its release. I'm a 66 year old guy and absolutely love this song. Shame on me for not knowing about it when I was 40. I listened to this yesterday a dozen times over in an hour and would welcome a 13th time
Bj nailed it....Gwen wrote the song after her long time boyfriend the bass player of her band broke it off with her. The two had been dating for a long time, long before they became famous, and after they hit it big he stated it became to hard to juggle their personal life with their professional life
ANAHEIM, CA close by Disneyland. She still lived in her parents house until she got married. No Doubt is originally a ska band, so that’s probably why she sings with a different way. Listen to her sing “Bathwater” and it will give you a good sense of what she’s good at singing. I believe they call it swing beat. It’s a style they used before the 50’s. I think the roaring 20’s.
Gwen went to high school in Anaheim, CA. My friend was friends with Gwen's best friend in high school. This song is from their album, "Tragic Kingdom." Making fun of the iconic Anaheim attraction, Disneyland. ✌️
Another thing was her dressed style during her singing careers she didn't half to be half dress or overly sexualized her performance to get people to notice her talent
The album title "Tragic Kingdom" is a play on Disney Land's "Magic Kingdom" which is located in Anaheim California, which is the area of Southern California that Gwen Stefani and the band are from.
She is singing to this person, "Don't Speak" because she doesn't want to hear what they are going to say. At the beginning of the song, she says, " You and me, we used to be together, every day together, always" Then, " I really feel, that I'm losing my best friend, I can't believe this could be the end." "It looks as though, you're letting go, and if its real, I don't want to know" Then the chorus, she comes with Don't Speak, I know just what you're saying. So please stop explaining, Don't tell me 'cause it hurts>" Don't Speak, I know just what you're thinking, I don't need your reasons, Don't tell me cause it hurts." The person is leaving her, and she doesn't want to hear it, because it hurts.
#1 Gwen was born in Orange County California #2 this song and most of the Tragic Kingdom album was written about her breakup with bass player Tony Kanal! #3 check out Just A Girl, Spiderwebs, Sunday Morning, Ex-Girlfriend, Bathwater, Underneath It All, It’s My Life (a Talk Talk cover from the 1980s), Hey Baby, Hella Good, & Simple Kind Of Life!
BJ is correct…it’s a break up song with the bassist in the band Tony Kanal…they’re all from Orange County, California…She has a bit of a Southern Californian Accent…Other songs to check out are Spiderwebs, Hey Baby, Hella Good, It’s My Life, Ex Girlfriend, New, I’m just a Girl, Underneath it All, and Sunday Morning to name a few…
Her brother garage band she joined as singer. No doubt has many great tunes. She wrote this about her breakup with member of band. Later she'd go out on her own, still performing .
JUST as this song was climbing the charts and getting massive air-time, I had a break up with my then girlfriend. This song became my "let it out" song behind closed doors. About 2 years later, met the woman who would become my wife. When I played this song one night with her in the room, she broke out crying. I asked why and she said she used to listen to it during her break up with her ex at the time. We really opened up to each other that night, talking about what we had wanted out of a relationship and how we wanted to "have more" than we had when we broke up with our exes. That talk became the bedrock of our relationship. So odd how music can do this type of thing. Can get you to a point where the emotions pour out of you, and yet can get you in that emotional state to be completely open and honest with someone else that you hide from the rest of the world.
It was a break up song when Gwen & Tony from No Doubt broke up. Now she is married to country star Blake Shelton & they have a few songs together. Would love to see you react to Happy Anywhere by Blake & Gwen.
Gwen Stefani is an Orange County girl from California. Most of the tragic Kingdom album is about her breakup with Tony. Before her breakup with Tony her brother Eric Stefani left the band. They have a lot of great songs.... excuse me mister, are you happy now, ex-girlfriend, settle down, and many more.
She’s from Cali. She used to be married to Gavin Rossdale the lead singer of Bush, in which I highly recommend y’all them out. Keep going down the No Doubt rabbit hole.
1997, my senior year of high school we got to choose between whatever foreign language we'd taken until then or Sign Language. I picked Sign Language and for our final exam my friend and I learned how to sign this song. I can still do it to this day!
Wife here!!...This is a great No Doubt song..She actually started with a California garage band..(Respect for that)..Her texture is Amazing!!..Well said as always!!..Asia.., it does sound as if she's traumatized..Wow on point !!..You both always have awesome intuition and insight...Thanks again!!
It was a breakup song. The fact that she thought that it was about a dying loved one speaks volumes. The song lyrics did the job of conveying how much it hurt.

Her and the Bass Player. It’s one of their best. Maybe because it was so personal to her. Really brought the raw emotion. You can hear in her voice. Great Job Guys. As always TY
She was dating the bases of the band but she said that it's a break up song for sure and she stated it can also be a band breaking up it hits on so many levels
An amazing song off of an amazing album. This was their third album and considered their breakout album. I also recommend their first two albums, both amazing in their own ways. Just understand that both of those albums are quite different in sound from this one and even from each other.
She dated the bassist for something like 6 years and he ended It. Definitely watch the behind the music episode on them. It explains everything. I rewatched It the other night and man did It take me back. Behind the music was so great!
Such a great song. Thanks for reacting. As others have said, Gwen and Tony Kanal, No Doubt's bass player, were together back in the day but then later broke up. At the time, she seemed to really take it hard. She was so very young at the time.
Gwen is from California. Her brother actually started the band but decided to quit and she took over (at least that's what I heard in 90s) but their style is known as ska. They have good music but I like this and I'm Just A Girl 💗🕊️
This was about her boyfriend in the band at the time, and it was about the relationship ending....she didn't want to here his reasons and explanations because she knew him well and what he was thinking, and to hear him say it out loud would hurt more...so hush hush darling, don't tell me cause it hurts.....
What can I say I love this song it always reminds me of my beautiful wife it’s her favorite song. When I hear it it chokes me up. I guess a great song can do that to you. The song is about an ex boyfriend, her bandmate. Gwen is from Fullerton, California. Again, thank you for what you do.
There is a cover of this song from a family bang from the Philippines, they sung and played the instruments, so amazing performance by Franz Rhythm. Please react on this family band from Bohol Philippines. Thanks!
Amazing song! This was about her breakup with the bands bassist Tony after 8 years together! "Don't speak, I know what you're thinking" she knew he was breaking up with her. The song "Cool" from her first solo album is a bit of a "sequel" to this song many, many years later. Spiderwebs, Just a girl, Sunday Morning of this album are all awesome
Her boyfriend band mate broke up with her. There is a original version post break up and it was a happy version but the song changed due to him breaking up with her. And what is worse is she had to work with him. She sings this song to him on stage in clips and u can see he is does not want to look at her. She loved that boy so much.
What most People don't know is Gwen Stefani started out as a Man. After a sex change he/she changed her name from George Stefani to Gwen. Right! I made that up. Good Reactions to a good song.
It is about their relationship ending but I only know that because I read it somewhere. I do like Asia's interpretation though and can see how she could interpret it like that without any other information. Nice reaction. I wish you two could've shown the video. She shows her passion too in her performance. "I'm Just A Girl" is another great song by them. It's kind of about women's role in society, how they are seen by others, and how they feel about it.
All of Gwen’s songs are about things that have happened in her life. All true story’s. Even her solo Albums are great. You should take a listen to her song. Make me like you (I think that’s the name) about her new Hubby Blake Shelton. Great song. Just love her. She has many of great songs I think you will enjoy. Thanks guys it was Great being with y’all tonight! 🥰
She’s an Orange County native … she’s not a valley girl . Most people from Orange County have sort of a skater/ surfer/ beach southern California accent
This song is about her breaking up with her boyfriend. He was actually a member of the band. She knew they were breaking up and anything he would say would be hurtful anything he had to say. She's American and from orange county California.
Best No Doubt Songs (imo; not including this one) are: Bathwater Platinum Blonde Life Just a Girl Rock Steady Simple Life Running Sunday Morning Spiderwebs Hella Good
It is about Gwen's relationship with her band's bass player, Tony Kanal. They were romantically linked at one point but went through a break-up. However, they were both loyal to each other as band members and stayed the best of friends... this is what I have heard. You should have watched their actual music video for this song. It would have been more revealing, I guess.
Always loved her and this song. She is from Fullerton, Cal. I asked Alexa, which is something y'all could do too, for all manner of things. I wonder about the copyright, but hell, they may subsidize you for the product placement.

I am pretty sure this was her first super serious relationship which i believe she thought would end in marriage.. heartbroken she wrote this song 😢

She's from Anaheim.
Bingo
Hints the name of the album is tragic kingdom a play on the magic Kingdom Disneyland and a nod to the town they are from 🤷🏾♂️
Anaheim is not the valley
You really really really should see this performed LIVE. She is amazing!
I second and third that!
Don't Speak live is amazing! I've seen Gwen do it 5 times.

The 1996 live performance of "Just a Girl" on Conan O'Brien is unbelievable. She even does the heavy metal singing voice on a couple lines.
Old Bathwater is probably my favorite No Doubt song.
It was a breakup song. The fact that she thought that it was about a dying loved one speaks volumes. The song lyrics did the job of conveying how much it hurt.

No hospital scenario. She just doesn't want to hear his reasons for ending their relationship. "Don't even go there"...BJ is correct
Best song of the 90’s in my opinion. I LOVE NO DOUBT
She has an accent! An American accent! (I'm Canadian 😄 you all have accents) I think she's from California though.

The songs about her ex lover Tony who was the bassist for No Doubt.

She grew up mostly in West Anaheim...not far from Disneyland
Her boyfriend band mate broke up with her. There is a original version post break up and it was a happy version but the song changed due to him breaking up with her. And what is worse is she had to work with him. She sings this song to him on stage in clips and u can see he is does not want to look at her. She loved that boy so much.
BJ you were actually right in your interpretation.
Damn that Blake… lucky bastard. I’m also a fan of her ex, Gavin Rosssale from the band Bush.
I SAW RED Bradley Nowells of Sublime and Gwen Stefani...kill it on that track.
She wrote this to the band's bassist.
She’s from SoCal, Anaheim to be exact.
This was about a bassist she had a 7 year relationship with, that ended. She sings her truth.
Postmodern Jukebox does an excellent version of this song. Haley Reinhart is the featured singer. Definitely worth checking out.
What most People don't know is Gwen Stefani started out as a Man. After a sex change he/she changed her name from George Stefani to Gwen. Right! I made that up. Good Reactions to a good song.
Hahahahhahahah
Anahiem "Tragic Kingdom" the album title is a take on Disney's Magic Kingdom
Gwen was punk rock star from Cali
J'adore cette chanson surtout le clip
Gwen is from Orange County CA. And she was highly influenced by SKA. That might be what you are hearing in her tone. 💚
You could not escape this song when it was out.
From southern california, orange county I believe, her voice reminds me of madonna, she used to rock her ass off now ,love her whole vibe!!
Gwen was born and raised in CA
This song is about her breaking up with her boyfriend. He was actually a member of the band. She knew they were breaking up and anything he would say would be hurtful anything he had to say. She's American and from orange county California.

Gotta see them performing live in original video. ❤️
Always loved her and this song. She is from Fullerton, Cal. I asked Alexa, which is something y'all could do too, for all manner of things. I wonder about the copyright, but hell, they may subsidize you for the product placement.
You have to hear haley Reinhart from Post modern jukebox cover of this song amazing.
Gwen is from Anaheim, California.
