This was written by Gwen Stefani after her brother Eric, No Doubt's primary songwriter up to then, left the band. She wrote it about being frustrated at her father being overprotective due to her gender, saying at the time: "I wouldn't trade being female, for anything, but the guys don't understand what a burden it can be sometimes."
@@ponfed I wasn't aware that he did so. I just know that she went on to make millions and marry Blake Shelton. She doesn't ever have to work again if she doesn't want to, but as with most performers, it gets in their blood and can't stop. I can understand it. There's a certain rush like no other when you get to the end of your performance and are hearing the applause, whistles, etc. I never really made it past the bar band stage, but people showing that they like your music is an amazing feeling
This is such a great funky tune by No Doubt. You should see her perform this live back in the day. Love her standing up for the ladies! You guys broke it down perfectly.☺🧡
"Tragic Kingdom", the lp that this is off of is a really good album. Other good songs from it are "Spiderwebs" and "Sunday Morning". You guys have ready done "Don't Speak".
Gwen did this one, because her parents were super strict with her because she was a girl. You guys should check out Gwen & her hubby Blake Shelton's duets. My fav is 'Nobody but you' which is beautiful & then 'Anywhere with you' is a spunky one. It fun seeing & hearing her now, 20 plus years after this tune. She has a beautiful voice.
Great song! Loved this era in music! Gwen and Gavin Rossdale, my teenage crush, met around this time on tour and hooked up and eventually married and had kids. Divorced now but was probably a great love story between 2 famous musicians
No doubt played last night at Coachella. They play next Saturday too and they had one of the best sets. If yall have nothing to do that night you should watch their performance!
I associate No Doubt with Garbage. They were 2 female led rock bands that got big at the same time. I think I remember this was big at the same time Garbage came out with “Only Happy When it Rains”.(or was it Stupid Girl?)
She is now married to Blake Shelton who is huge in country music. The made a country album together and since she has dabbled into the country genre. The have both been coaches on the talent show Voice.
It’s all true. Older brother had all the freedom. I had none. Nobody still will let me drive late at night and I’m 53 years old!!!!!! Totally feel this song.
No one will ‘let you? ‘You’re 53. You can do as you please. I’m 41. I drive late by myself. Did at 17,too. Get a backbone and quit acting like a victim.
If you haven't already check out her video for Hollaback Girl. It's her response to a beef she had with Courtney Love who was lead singer for the band Hole and widow of Kurt Cobain who was lead singer of Nirvana.
People forget how she dated Bradley Nowell , the lead singer of Sublime.... Saw Red is a great song they did together.... you can definetly see that influence in her 1st album❤️
Been a fan of theirs since Eric, Gwen's brother, was in the band. Actually, Eric founded the band with John Spence. One of the best concerts I've been to as well. "Just A Girl" was their breakout hit from their 3rd album, Tragic Kingdom. A play on Disneyland being the "Magic Kingdom" because No Doubt is from Anaheim, CA where Disneyland is. Rocksteady is one of my favorite albums of theirs. "Hella Good", "Hey Baby", "Underneath It All" and they even did a song with Prince called "Waiting Room". I think it's a great album because they took it back to their roots of ska/punk band and they also recorded it in Jamaica. 😎👍
They have a video called Live from the Tragic Kingdom. It's the final date in a two year world tour performed in their hometown of Anaheim. It's one of the best live performances ever recorded.
Also, this song was way ahead of its time. It wasn’t a girls anthem or empowerment song back then, like it should have been and probably would have been today. I haven’t listened or read the actual lyrics for a long time. Great lyrics.
I loved No Doubt! I remember I wanted pink hair when I was a young because of Gwen, but I neve4 did it. Love the 80's 90's 2000 music. I remember MTV Oasis, Duran Duran, Garbage, Linkin park, Placebo... the only 'new' artist that I 'adopted' is Louis Tomlinson because he makes music with those influences, I love his songs and writing style.
Asia and BJ, y’all would enjoy Gwen and Blake Shelton’s songs. It’s a tour of their love story. Add in Carson Daly…he officiated their wedding. When Blake was building their “house” on their ranch, Blake built Carson his own cabin/house. The friendship is beautiful.
I love Gwen’s voice hear and I love the message of the song! It’s a female improvement type of song! Don’t box us in! This is Gwen before her solo career! She made a conscious decision to have a different sound for her solo stuff!❤❤
I was maybe in my late 20s - early 30s when this came out. I remember thinking - yeah that kinda sucks about being a girl. But I always did whatever I wanted. Walked the dog in the dark (oh you shouldn’t do that), go to concerts by myself, I did whatever I wanted. Do I relate to the lyrics? Absolutely. But I’m no victim. I’m a strong person. Society’s ridiculous ideas are a slight irritation.
Guys ,I'm a sailor, but I grew up cowboying in the N Ga mountains. My little sister is 7 years younger than me. Women should be treated equally. If we can agree on that, can we agree, with exceptions, when you need the strength, and just all out I'll put it my body between you and harm, would you rather have a 5ft 100 lb girl/woman , or a 6ft 200 lb man between you and that danger? I'm all for equal rights. No reason not to. Unfortunately, not all situations are equal. I love that song, and sympathize, but thinking about how my dad treated my brother, and I ,compared to my sister ? She had some restrictions we didn't, but when it was 35 degrees, raining, and a cow,or horse, down in the pasture, or a fence down, my dad didn't yell for my sister. She was likely overly protected. Still is. My brother- in-,law is a retired Marine Corp Major. I do understand the frustration. Comes through well in the song. Capt.Bob, SV ( Sailing Vessel) 27th Chance, Tampa Fl, USA 🇺🇸
You gotta go back and see the actual video. I understand why you didn't show it here. She was mesmerizing to me as a sheltered teenage girl. I completely related at the time.
Wife here..Hey.. , I just wanted to let you guys know that for some reason my comments are disappearing about half the time..I don't know what's going on..A couple of weeks this has been happening..🤔

Biggest favor her brother ever did for her, even though he didn't mean for it to be. Where's she now and where's he?
Ya she did well for someone with no rights.
cry me a river..Van Goghs Daughter doesnt bitch
@@TonyM1961 Well, I don't mean that he was right in his stance.. but he went on to being an animator on the Simpsons.. not a bad deal.

They definitely lived on TRL. They were huge when I was in middle and high school in the 90s & early 2000s.
Asia & BJ, you'll love their "Hella Good", "It's My Life" and "Hey Baby"!!!
I bought this cd when I was 16. I’m 42 now and still have it. Loved being a teenager in the 90’s ☺️
Same here. I’ll be 40 in May. This was a 90s childhood
Gwen has a unique and awesome voice and is a great songwriter and vocalist..
The whole album is dope. I miss this era.
We are all young then.
"Tragic Kingdom", the lp that this is off of is a really good album. Other good songs from it are "Spiderwebs" and "Sunday Morning". You guys have ready done "Don't Speak".
That Ska vibe drew me to No doubt. Great band. Sublime is another great band kicking that Ska and Reggae flow.
And Reel Big Fish lol
Might mighty bosstones
Rancid

This song speaks to every girl 🥰
I love that BJ gets it ♥️
BJ has a celebrity crush. 😄
💕 Great song but you have to Watch the Official Video to really Appreciate the amount of Energy she puts into Singing this song. Gwen was Awesome! 🎶💃🏻
Definitely! No doubt is pure joy to the eyes!!

Great song. It reminds me of being young and fit. Long ago. Fun times 😩.... Spiderwebs is great too

Why is Asia just so effortlessly beautiful?!?! Her smile is everything!
Gwen was my Girl in them 90s, the Band is from here Southern California (Orange County)… still watching their videos 👍🏽🔥🦋✨🧚🏽💫
I saw them live at Tulane In1992😁
Such a strong message love this song.
The sarcasm is RICH! LOVE IT

They never dated. They were friends.
They didn’t date. She did say she had a crush but that’s all.
These lyrics are so god damn sarcastic and well written, I LOVE No Doubt. All these years later I still listen to them.
Beat songs from this album (tough to pick) would have to be Spider Webs, Sunday Morning, and Don't Speak.
One of my favs bands growing up in the 90s and I'm 37 now.
So many awesome No Doubt songs to choose from.
The best artists can write deep lyrics but put them to songs and melodies that everyone can listen to. No doubt was great at doing that.
"Running" song reaction? Happy New Year's! 🎉 Listening December 2023.
LOL! I "try" my wife like that, Asia, and she just laughs at me.
No Doubt in my Twenties was everything !!!!!!
This is nice, guys 👊👍😁
Great song, love the voice, verry good band. Huge hit in the Netherlands.
❤👊👍😁

"Spiderwebs" one of my fav No Doubt songs
No Doubt was on fire...great album...

BJ just steppin’ right into it. Asia calls it right out. Hilarious. We can all relate.
Love this. Love Gwen Stephani.

Bathwater is a great song by them as well.
I loved NoDoubt and I love Gwen's voice. ✌️❤
Gwen Stefanie is the Queen of Ska married to the King of Country. Powerhouse couple.
Stefani *
Now you should check out “Stupid Girl” by Garbage. The two songs came out in within months of each other. Similar themes. And Garbage is amazing!!
Love 90s Gwen

I've always loved No Doubt. For some odd reason I've always liked BathWater.
……why is that ‘odd?’
Gwen's voice is hypnotically feminine.
Watch them perform this live. Thats all that needs to be said.
Rockin tune.
Simple kind of life is awesome
My theme song from 19-21 class of 1994
you should have watched the video to it because it is so powerful and adding up to the music.
love this somg!!!! says so much!!!
I use to like this song when I was young. But as a parent I agree with being protective of your children lol
Have you 2 seen kodi lee journey of you and I omg he's so talented just amazing
Yes, I remember those TRL days! Watched almost every day and voted for videos, esp since I was a BSB fan. 😏
Yep, you guys got it. Good stuff with this group. 🤘😎
*****The Video to this is Great. You'd like GWEN STEFANI and PINK singing this together on an IHEARTradio Concert.
We know who BJs celebrity crushed are now. Haha.
Pls check out No Doubt's Coachella performance 🎉🎉
Hey Bj remind Asia how much she went on and on over George Michaels during the Carless Whispers video 😄😉 ... Sorry Asia I couldn't resist 😉✌️
Great song - love the video - one of her best 🤩
No Doubt were so good,I was gutted when Gwen went pop.😐
Never get rid of the Reds hat BJ. It's fits like a glove Keep it for special occasions. Griff would approve.
Could you both checkout chevelle door to door cannibals. I think you both will enjoy this. Great video and song
Most of the music from that era heard from TRL
My jam!
Big props to the girls! I wouldn't want that job~!

Chasin' and Tryin' 😂
Really miss her No Doubt days…
Asia, you're right
There's a GENERATION that misses "Cool Gwen"!!! 💯💯💯 😓
Please hoobastank-the reason
Every man who was a boy when this song came out had an undying crush on Gwen Stefani for at least the next decade.

Spiderwebs, It's My Life, Hollaback Girl
Another female empowerment song you guys would love, made up of some Legends, is called, "sisters are doing it for themselves" 😉👍🔥
No doubt, pop music. lol.
Wife here..Hey.. , I just wanted to let you guys know that for some reason my comments are disappearing about half the time..I don't know what's going on..A couple of weeks this has been happening..🤔
Please react to "HEY BABY" by No Doubt
The official video for this is pretty decent, at least better than reading the song like a book.
it's crime not watching the actual video :)
I knew she looked like Gwen Stephanie but I didn’t think it could be her because most of those actors can only read lines
Since it's the holiday season please do No doubt or The Vandals Oi to the world.
Any time I hear this song all I can think of is Captain Marvel... Lol
Asia "Oh yeah, I know EXACTLY what she means". Yep.
Nope.
@@hebber1961 Ha!
Nice. Thanks
No problem 👍
@@AsiaandBJ 👍
B J you need to play the song Got what i got by Jason Aldean( if you aint reacted to it yet.hahaha i played it for my wife.
I imagine the guy in the band that broke her heart, regrets it everyday.
