For our hair tutorial today, we are going back to basics! We wanted to show how to create a classic sock bun (or donut bun) with no leftover ends to deal with. This is not a new method, but one that has been around for a long time. Surprisingly we have not shown this technique for making a bun on our channel up until now (even though the princess wears her hair like this often for dance recitals and competitions.) This method of rolling the hair up onto the "bun maker" works great for long/medium length hair. The hair donut used in this video was actually purchased at the dollar store! These can also be found in most beauty supply stores and discount stores. ;) Of course if you do not have a bun maker, you can used a rolled up sock instead (which works just as well.)

I knew about the technique but not the part where you split the hair into 3 sections, this is brilliant because after using the technique and not splitting the hair this will make it so much easier and better so thanks for that. Love your tutorial :)

jazzdancer3218 Princess Hairstyles I have the same problem as you do and for our synchronized figure skating competitions we all have to make a identical sized donut bun. My solution for this is that I split my ponytail in 2 pieces (own preference if you want them equally divided or not).
Then you use one of the pieces to wrap it around your ponytail and then you form a bun with it as perfectly as you can. (at this point you should have a bun with a ponytail coming out of the center).
Then you just use the bun as a bun maker and the hair in the middle as your normal ponytail. Then just use the technique you use while making a donut bun.
This method will leave with halve of your usual amount of hair wrapped around the bun and a normal sized bun. Another tip is the braid the hair that you wrap around in two braids on either site and then wrap it around the bun.
Everyone thought that I was wearing a regular donut bun, while I was not.

I wish my hair was able to do this, my hair is about 2 inches past my hips and very thick. Every time i try this hairstyle i get about half way down and everything starts going bad, my hair wont roll into the donut or sock anymore and it is just a mess. ive even tried it by tilting my head down and working my way up to my head, different sized donuts, even the other way with leaving the ends out and braiding the rest around the bun but the braids are just too big! :( Anyone have any suggestions on how i could get this look?

I need help :/ i have my own home made sock bun, when i roll it down my layers stick out and also when i roll it, the sock bun unrolls and i have to re-make the sock bun again :'/ any suggestions? Also i have somewhat thin hair and you can see the sock through the bun..

Just curious, is there a way to make it smaller? My hair is down to my waist so a sock bun with ends is out of the question but when I do the rolling technique my bun is almost the size of my head! Or it just may be time to retire buns on my hair :(
jazzdancer3218 Hmmm, if your hair is super thick, it might be inevitable that you will end up with a huge bun. But, I know some brands make these donuts in different sizes, so you might try looking for a smaller one? Good luck!
