I remember pulling into a car wash and the service guy that approached me to get my payment. Must have known that I had a lot on my mind. He said how are you doing you seem like you're sad. Do you feel like sharing? I will forever think of this man in my heart. Because I turned and looked to him and normally I would say oh I'm fine thank you. But this time I looked at him and said I'm sorry I said I lost my father and my brother. And I can't seem to get over the grief. He said come on inside and I'll get you a cup of coffee and I promise you will have a better day. His kindness is carried throughout the years and it's been 34 years and I will never forget this man that reached out to me when I was really sad! When we got inside he shared a sad story that he recently went through. I know he did this to make me feel more comfortable about revealing my feelings. XOXO don't hesitate to reach out to somebody win your heart is telling you it will be okay.

As a grocery store cashier, I appreciate you! We LOVE getting friendly customers, and I'll talk to my coworkers about a positive experience just as much as I vent about a frustrating experience. This makes me think of a meme I saw once that said something along the lines of, "Be so completely yourself that everyone else feels safe to be themselves too" and watching your videos, I can see that you are so unashamedly yourself, that I can only imagine the freedom people lucky enough to be in your presence must feel! You are a beautiful soul, Lee, and I'm SO glad I came across your videos however many months ago! Keep doing what you do,because it's so inspiring!

I really like what you said, Lee. It goes beyond just smiling. I like that! “Making other’s feel comfortable & safe to be themselves.. as you’re being yourself”. I’m gonna go beyond Hi from now on. And I agree with you on smiling & asking “how’s their day has been”, first. Cannot believe how many clerks or business people I’ve called and somewhere in the conversation asked them how their day has been going. And they act shocked and say “you’re the first person that’s ever (or the first person of the day) asked me that”. Sad, but at the same time, makes me feel good.. like I truly made a difference in their day.. or made them feel like someone truly cared about them and how they were doing. It wasn’t just a one-sided conversation. Smiling/caring doesn’t cost a thing. And you go sooooomuch in return♥️😊

Hi Lee. Fantastic sentiment. Thank you.. I lost my border collie on March 10th, only a month ago. I was devastated. I rescued him when he was 18 months. He passed over at 16 years old. I always considered myself kind but since losing him I have been overwhelmed by people's sympathy for my loss...he was a well liked dog in my town by people who did not really know me but were touched by his amazing kindness. Although I am grieving I was really touched by this and have become even more empathetic and kind....situations have happened and I was able to help others even though I was feeling raw. His life taught me the true value of kindness and his death opened my my heart even further. Thank you for all that you do. From the UK.

I looked around to see if he said hi to someone else behind me because I have never had anyone showing me kindness like that before. When I saw him smiling at me , I then smiled back and said hi back to him. That small act of kindness saved my life. The rest of that day I was smiling and I even forgot what I was so sad about. Even a smile or a simple hi 👋 to someone or both can save a life. I am forever grateful to that boy for that.

“Be the first to be kind”. This is so inspirational!!! You always hear parents telling their children “be kind, be kind”. I think there is something much deeper with the teaching of be the first to be kind. An empowerment that you too can acknowledge humanity (as it is) and possibly influence the reality and energy of others near you. It goes beyond recognition of self and embraces the whole notion that we are more than just one.

And EVERYONE started smiling BACK. I didn't just do it at work either, I did it out in the world and it would blow your mind away how people respond when you smile at them. I smiled in a meeting today, I have a horrible facial disorder and have teeth issues. And a dear friend commented on how beautiful it was to see me smile. I'm in CT and she is in CA. So...it works! Giving him the most mean looks. Mind you every time we have seen her face it is so unwelcoming. So my husband being the beautiful free spirit he is just smiled at her after she almost ran him over and she finally smiled back. Sometimes people are so hurt they take it out on the world around them and we can't let that rub off on us.

100% agree with this. My Dad would tell us growing up that "it's nice to be nice, and it costs nothing". When I'm out walking with my dog Tizer, whenever I lock eyes with someone (especially if they're also walking their dog) I always smile and say hi. I can usually tell within a second if they want to say hi or not, and if not, then that's fine. Usually a really nice conversation about our dogs, or their day (if they don't have a dog with them!) follows.
    It's nice to be nice.

Lumping ALL into one group - never reflects all, but just a few! And, it is amazing how a little kindness goes a long way! Not always, but then the recipient may be too bitter, angry, hurt to accept kindness. So best to be kind - Great message!

I agree BUT as someone with a disability I’ve noticed that There are a small percentage of folks who will scowl or just stare when faced with someone who has a difference. I always smile first but for me I know I might be a big enough light for a deep dark.

I'm sooo glad you said this. I touched on the same idea in a comment here. Interactions are unique based on variables - age, sex, weight, location, looks, clothing, situation, etc. And yes DISABILITIES. I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't add that! My family, myself, and my 25-year profession have given me a "disabled" view of the world, so to speak. When you look at your surroundings through the eyes of those who are mentally and physically disabled, it's vastly different than what others experience.
Public spaces, conversation, opinion, everything media, technology, etc can make you feel like you're alone in your opinion, conditions, pain, and so on.
On a similar note, even those with the same disability might have completely different experiences and unable to understand.
How many times have we heard judgmental comments similar to, "Well I have ADHD too, but I can still pay my bills on time."

@@pepper1188 I'm sorry you're going through this. You're not alone but I understand it might feel like it. Some groups receive little acknowledgment, although they're paid lip service. The elderly, the disabled, abused children. However, a good chunk of the population are either disabled or elderly, or knows someone who is. The good news is that there are many resources available, even locally, although they're not advertised much.

I have traveled through almost every state in the US and I have always met wonderful folks. My dear wife an I have been lucky enough to have visited 38 different countries, some multiple times, with so many wonderful experiences. It's all about how YOU behave. This world is filled with amazing wonderful folks wiling to help you if you need help, invite you into their homes or even be your guides. We also noticed that the poorest folks are the most generous. Smile and be friendly and you will have the most amazing experiences and meet the most wonderful folks. We could fill a book with all of the amazing unexpected experiences we have had while traveling. Are we really that lucky?

AMEN MY BROTHER!! A nice reminder that we all need. I learned this about 15yrs ago. I had only had my car back from getting a new bumper on it for 3 days. My son was in our local Children's hospital and we were struggling to take turns spending time with him so that he wasn't alone. It was about 10:30 at night and I'd gone home to shower & get things for the next day, feed the pets, (etc, etc, etc..) and relieve my spouse for the night. At the ticket booth in front of the hospital where you pull into to parking lots, I had one car in front of me and was just getting ready to pull forward and the Porch Cayenne in front of me put the car in reverse and gunned it, crushing my new front bumper and giving me ANOTHER THING TO DO. I was torn between being mad as hell, and wanting to cry from sheer exhaustion and feeling so damn sorry for myself. The gal gave me her card with her insurance company info on it and headed out (thank God we had the same small, at the time, insurance company). After I pulled forward, the guy at the booth started to wave me forward and then stopped me. He said he was surprised at how calm I was by what happened. In my head I was thinking something completely different. He said she pulled into the children's side of the hospital by accident, that her father was in the ER on the Adult side and had been in an accident earlier that evening and she was told he wasn't going to make it, that she should get there as soon as she could. WOW. It hit me like a ton of bricks!! While I we feeling so sorry for myself about my car, my son, the bill to come, work and responsibilities...the only thing worse would be not having it and my family at all. My son was sick, but he wasn't dying. I've never been so glad that I kept my mouth shut and didn't indulge my temper, that I found a scrap of self-discipline and was able to hold my tongue. As I walked up to my son's room I just said a little prayer for the lady and her family, and thanked God that our problems were smaller and I was able to learn something huge that night. You really never do know what the other person is dealing with.

I once read on a forum a guy saying a woman smiling at him makes his day. So many other men agreed. I was used to smiling at other women, girl power and all, but shied away from smiling at men because I was over thinking what that meant. After reading that forum post, I started smiling at men, and while very few smile back, it feels nice just to share the positivity to everyone! I also do my best now to receive smiles well too (from everyone), and smile back.

I'm from Brooklyn. So many people think New Yorkers are unhappy and unfriendly. The truth is, we tend to be in a rush. But there is no group of people I would rather be with in an emergency, when I need help, or to have fun. And what he said is spot on. I had a ton of friendly interactions in NYC. And when I didn't, it was usually because I was the one in a rush. But a smile and some sort of reaching out for human connection makes all the difference.

I make a habit wherever I am if I am being served; I read the name on their tag and call that person by name. It is astounding how their eyes shine, and their demeanor immediately softens by just being recognized as who they are. Works 99 percent of the time.

You are completely right. I work graveyards at a gas station and one of my first days I had a man come in just grumpy. The next time I saw him I was expecting him to be grumpy. I decided to just be myself and started a conversation with him and now he is one of my favorite regular customers. I could have let my first impression of him keep me from reaching out and I would have lost the opportunity to make a new friend. I can honestly say that when you treat others the way you want to be treated the world is a better place.

I agree with what you are saying. I am Canadian and recently visited the US and was in a busy big box store and noted that the workers there were a bit like robots, seeming uninterested and glib. When I got to cashier, I smiled and asked her how her day was going and I really found that her demeanour improved and she did become more responsive to me during our interaction. If I hadn't made the effort, my reaction would have been that everyone there was unfriendly. Which now I see is that these people are just overworked and are lacking positive interactions with their clients. We need to stop and appreciate other people, it benefits everyone. Love the work that you do and it is always a pick me up to see your lovely, happy animals.

Our beliefs are our expectations... and that colors everything. Being a good person is narrowly defined in too many micro cultures. The goodness I've experienced on the streets of NYC was mindblowing, and the goodness I've experienced in a small town in North Carolina was just as wonderful... and they LOOKED completely different. Open minds are rare, but they're the happiest.
