    everything is absolutly perfect from the scenario, the setting, the acting, the OST, the SFX, the lovecraftian/psychological horror ...

  • @bigleaguechew87

    What makes this a great horror film is the effective atmosphere it was able to create. The cold and desolate Antarctic setting and the music complements it so well. We as the viewer feel just as isolated as the characters in the film and just as scared and hopeless. That's what's missing in horror films these days...ATMOSPHERE.

    • @MrHanslikeslegos
      @MrHanslikeslegos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I agree with you all the way, most of the "horror" films today are all centered on the devil and demons. That's absolutely not even scary, because it's so saturated to the point that it has absolutely no atmosphere, character development, and so much more! Movie directors should step up their game and see fit to what an actual horror film should be- and not the half-assed and CGI shit that we are skeptical to see. I could go onto a huge rant, but I'll just keep it short- hopefully the movie drain will unclog todays repetitive excuses for "horror" or "thriller" films.

      +bigleaguechew87 Yes. A little close-knit group, isolated and out of reach of all help, suddenly facing something straight out of Lovecraft. Some THING which could hide, consume and imitate your friends, then pop out without warning as a true Eldritch Abomination. Something so completely alien that the mind was numbed just to look at it.
      (Indeed, one particular character's calm reaction to one of the Thing's more nauseating parlor tricks is a significant clue that he himself was a Thing at that point in time. )

He would later go to work on countless other iconic films, including Total Recall (1990), Airplane!, Se7en, and Fight Club. How the fuck can you be that genius?!

    Bloody hell, you've only got to listen to this track to feel your nerves slowly fraying, and that's quite aside from watching the film itself, lol! The Thing is without doubt the greatest, most unsettling, most claustrophobic, most paranoia-filled horror movie ever made, bar none - and I include the original Alien in that. John Carpenter didn't just make a masterpiece: he created a cinematic legend that is still unsurpassed nearly 40 years later. It doesn't get any better than this...it really doesn't.

  • @orsoncart9441

    If there was ever a perfect film this has to be close. Story 100%, actors 100% ,ending 100% ,theme tune 100%. It's so good it almost makes one think it's a mistake!

    • @Turrican60
      @Turrican60 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know *EXACTLY* what you mean because I've always thought the same things myself. This film feels almost beyond reproach because there's just nothing to criticise, even down to the smallest details. Heaven only knows what those brain-dead critics were thinking of back in 1982 when they badly derided this magnificent film. Well, nobody remembers their names 38 years later, but everyone knows about this classic. The Thing greatly deserves the global cult following it's achieved over the years, and you can't say much more than that. An outstanding production and work of art.

    When Carpenter made the movie, he had a second ending to the movie (Just in case he needed to use it) in which, Macready is rescued and placed into a room and given a blood test and he passed it.

      Kurt Russell had told Carpenter that this film(The thing) wasn't gonna be appreciated for 20 years. Kurt foresaw what John couldn't. With better special effects and some more alien-attacking-man scenes, this film could have become the greatest horror ever.

      It's actually Carpenter's soundtrack with Morricone's name on it. Carpenter rewrote most of Morricone's work. It prompted Morricone to ask Carpenter why did he hire him if he was going to replace 90% of it anyway. Carpenter kept Morricone's name on the soundtrack because a lot of the reworked soundtrack was based on Morricone's main theme. It should be noted Morricone specifically wrote that theme in Carpenter's style as a nod to the director and it was never intended to be anything more than incidental music.

    Certain 80'S movies brings you back in time. You start thinking back to those 80'S feelings, the music, tv shows, the cars, the horror movies , the fashion, the slang, the girls/boys you liked growing up, junior high school, high school, college, trade school, events, the feeling itself of the 80'S. John Carpenter's the thing stood out from other horror movies. It's right up there with the movie Aliens. This theme music and Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th. Far as 80'S zombie movies. Return of the living dead! I hate to say it but some flicks you never forget for as long as you live. These flicks stays on your mind . You play it back in your brains. You press rewind. Revenge of the nerds, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, They call me Bruce, Terminator, Aliens, Police Academy, Krush Groove, One down two to go.

    Never gets old since I was around 7 when I saw it on TV at grandma's, and still scares the crap out of me hearing the single bass thumping of the theme marking its ominous presence. It's so simple and yet its eerieness grip forever.. A wonderful rare case of not having to be complicated to be remembered. And The Thing is a masterpiece in every way, it's musical concept as well as it's practical effects in the movie is what made it come alive anytime better than crappy CGI that's overblown in movies today. Thanks so much for this timeless upload.

(Some of it DID get away and later reappeared, mashed together with the Blair-Thing for the final battle). There was a storyboarded scene with the Blair-Thing attacking Fuchs from the ceiling and devouring him, but Carpenter just couldn't get the FX to look convincing so the scene was cut, leaving Fuchs' fate ambiguous.
