Also, hunger, grain imports, cholera, typhoid, smallpox, malaria, maternal mortality, infant mortality, 28% literacy rate, and 38 years life expectancy.
I can remember India in the late 1950s. Hard life. Very Indian, very religious, very warm and family oriented, and plenty of religious festivals, but all those negatives too. Population of 387 million!

@@dalitnahipehlehinduhu6569 You have been told lies. Let me tell you the truth.
      1. Varna system is a component of caste system.
      2. India was always an agricultural area. Artisans were few and far and mostly in urban areas.
      3. Land of knowledge tag declined even before Turkish invasions as told by Al Biruni in his book about how Brahmins didn't care much about knowledge and scientific curiosity
      4. Religion is one of the components of Dharma. Dharma mean following own duty. Religion is part of that duty.
      5. We never had houses for poor in villages. They were mostly huts.
Btw, Manu Smriti, one of the most important books of Hinduism doesn't regard you as a part of Hindu society. Still you claim yourself as Hindu.

Whatever faults he might had one thing no one deny is his contribution in establishing various Public Sector Industries, Medical and Engineering colleges and taking taking massive public works projects which generated millions of employment. My father who was an orphan and could not study beyond high school was beneficiary of the system of those days and could get a job at a Public sector with a job security thus having some source of income to lead a respectable life.
