    I can't believe this is on here, I was on the lawn in my own universe, I thought I was at the ocean, then I was in the forest, everyone was a dancing tree, then birds started singing, and the trees were spinning and the ocean waves flowing, then the pirate ships started glowing, and Jerry started singing. I was back at Shoreline. What a short strange trip it was. Recommend this one in the right state of mind. This song right here, at this show, changed my life... A bus came by and I got on.

    "From Jerry's 1972 debut solo album, Bird Song joined the Dead's repertoire in 1971, and after slipping out of the song list in September 1973, it rejoined in its acoustic arrangement in September 1980, and electrically a couple of months later. It would remain a large part of the Dead's first sets for the next 15 years, including this great rendition with Bruce Hornsby." -David Lemieux

    I love Bruce and Vince and so glad to see this show for the first time since I was there all those years ago. Jerry was just beginning to get over Brent. Tis is definitely one of the best from this run. I remember LA BEING a sonic and social nightmare on that tour!

    From 2:15 to 2:30 is superb. Bruce Hornsby's short solo on the piano merges smoothly with Jerry Garcia's bending note on the E7 with standard tuning.

    Best summer tour of my life if I wasn't sharing the cleanest, kindest liquid with my beautiful friends.dancing was a must for me and some times when I got exhausted I get up to the front and watch the band, I remmember being fascinated with Jerry and Bruce subtle looks Bruce seemed like an innocent school boy and Jerry sort of seemed protective of Bruce never saw jerry smile as much on stage as that summer. I never mentioned it lots of people didn't appreciate Bruce being on stage at all, but I saw the positive effects he had on the band especially Jerry, been searching these to see if it came through on film or if I was just tripping like my bro told me never mentioned it or thought about it all these years I can see it now and I don't think I'm trippin.

    This is sweet sounding. I spaced that Brent wasn't playing and I love the post-coma Brent years as well as most other years so I guess that is pretty vague on my part. 😁😉

    Imagine how much better this would sound if the outrageously bad synth was a Hammond

  • @Twotontessie
    @Twotontessie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Always liked the “flute.” Didn’t some of the other sounds as much in ‘91. One of weir’s worst guitar sounds and the keyboard synth …hmmm … little of that goes a long way.
    And let’s be honest in hindsight the Hornsby thing was ridiculous- why do you have a guy of that caliber just sitting off behind a piano like Keith Godchaux? Missed opportunity there. Should have had a lead role - the new Brent. Apparently they just wouldn’t rehearse and he gave up on that idea. Annoying. What was the point then? Maybe just to keep Garcia out there earning all that money. That made me sad but it was fact - it was all about the money by then. For them. We all were grateful!

      I have to, respectfully, disagree.

      Hornsby wasn’t there to be a permanent member. He was already well known by himself, and didn’t need the Grateful Dead, he just saw it as a passion project because he liked them and it was a way of helping Vince ease in. You may think it was ridiculous but it wasn’t supposed to be Bruce Hornsby & His Grateful Dead, it was The Grateful Dead (and sometimes Bruce Hornsby). Led to some great Jams though, even if I agree with you on the toy keyboard sounds.

    • @Twotontessie
      @Twotontessie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mooglancashire424 that’s all fair - there were some great moments … I like those Aug 1991 shows for example. Great Bruce shows.
