- In this video, I make a Steel Knot by Bending Rebar, without using heat.
The knot is called a Clove Hitch Knot
This knot will be used in a future Industrial Style project. I love the look of industrial-style furniture and rebar with knots fits right in with the look I like.
I hope you enjoy my video of the project, it was a lot of fun to make.
The main tools used were a Hammer, an angle grinder, and a bench vise.

As a climber I have trusted this knot with my life countless times, this one looks even more solid.
a tad heavy for a climber
It is a knot I use all the time securing loads. Thank you for your comment.
I'd like to see a rewoven figure 8 done this way!
@@drunktrump5209 yeah that guy is gonna start climbing with half inch rebar to hold him up

Mid hurricane, man is just bending rebar into knots. Savage.
Hahaha, just another day, the wind was missing me, if it was coming the other way I would have packed up. I appreciate your comment. Cheers!
@@GavinClarkdiy Haha fair enough! I love it (: Thanks for the content, super cool! Cheers man.
@@GavinClarkdiy still replying to comments on a 2 year old video, you're an awesome dude
I am 17 years old and I am really interested with working with metals. I make chainmail for now . I made a full chainmail coif couple of years ago and I am experimenting on new stuff now. People keep telling me why are you bothering with these. They don't understand the pleasure these simple things give. This video is almost visual representation of my feelings. It gives me joy just watching you bend a challenging knot. I can't even imagine the joy of figuring something like this out myself!! Thank you for this video and inspiration. You are amazing.
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment you are 100% right, some people like you and me enjoy these type of things, many don't understand as they shop and buy things and watch TV. It is nice to own things that cannot be bought in a store, or give a personal gift to someone. I think you should start filming yourself making your projects, and start a youtube channel, you just never know where that will take you. Eitherway I wish you the best.
Hi Gavin
I’ve been a professional metalworker over here in the UK for 40 years and still enjoyed the simplicity of your project plus liked the look of the the wire brushed rebar. Good Onya Bruce. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much Mick, I appreciate your comment. Cheers Mate.

Wonderful seeing an artist at work. I design escape rooms, and it's given mii a great appreciation for people who can do such esoteric work as this with such skill. My art would be nothing without people like you!
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. I think your job would be very interesting. I appreciate your comment.
Gavin,
I was skeptical of how satisfying it would be to watch a guy bend rebar into a knot, but I watched it anyway. It is a testament to problem solving using the power of thinking and basic tools, that could genuinely apply to nearly any project or problem.
Deciding on a goal, collecting material, making adjustments, examining results, and repeating until the desired results are achieved.
You are a Genius sir.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it, and I appreciate your comment. Cheers Mark
Those high winds seem beautiful and relaxing.
Sometimes, but when they come from the other direction they are a pain.
You have a very humble style of video. I think your honest enthusiasm resonates with people. Thanks.
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
Excellent. Just a nice, wholesome rebar tied into a clove hitch; this is the way I remember the world, the Internet, and life; this is what I want.
That is beautiful. The best parts about the clove hitch is that it's easy to do, it doesn't slip and it's relatively easy to get it to release. You've broken it's functionality but in the best way possible.
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
Would be interesting to see (if you could get enough tension) if the knot tightens under load? Great video
with a very big load, I am sure it would tighten a bit but the ribs on the steel would grab at some stage and stop it from getting any tighter
Hahaha!
You can use the jig for testing Wire Ropes with some improvising.
Thanks.

В чем здесь ум???
@@АлександрНагалев Это всего лишь стальной узел, предназначенный только для искусства.
@@GavinClarkdiy я и говорю что ум здесь совсем не при чем, здесь руки золотые нужны, в смысле очень умелые!
There is a slightly different technique. A very loose and very large knot is tied on a long steel rod "as it goes", and then one end of the rod is firmly fixed somewhere higher, and a strong sling or rope is attached to the other, on which a good weight is hung. With the help of this weight, the knot is gradually tightened in jerks. You can tie very tight knots and not only the "grip" type.
Awesome job. Thx for sharing these DIY rebar projects, I am retired and I struggled with what to do in my excessive free time. These projects have helped me find things to do to fill this time. Thank you.
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment and wish you the best for your projects.

Knotted rebar like this would be pretty awesome in an industrial setting, like you say. It would really look cool if you had a series of these serving as balusters going up stairs, with the knots holding the rail.
I agree it would look awesome with them all lined up.

Thank you very much, I have bent a few things over the years, Hahaha, it all takes time and a good long bit of pipe to bend it with. Enjoy your holidays too Robert.

looks amazing.. tempted to make my fence outta this technique, but i doubt i have the skills to pull it off 👍👍 u got a new fan here mate
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. If you do make it it would look awesome, I wish you the best.
Brilliant tutorial. A lot of us, myself included, have all these basic tools, and seeing your video could do...all of these steps. That's great to someone wanting to learn or extend their skills. But you take it a step further, all the small moves, adjustments. With rope I've tied clove hitches thousands of times -- I've even set them up exactly like you do, two bends, fold and then slide into place. But I would've never imagined doing what you did. You made a decorative piece, but there's so much technique and basic planning this would be a good skill to learn.
Thank you very much for the feedback, I am glad you liked it. I try to use simple tools on the channel if I can. Cheers!
That's actually really awesome. Well done. I'm amazed you got the loops to line up so well.

As I watched this video, I tried to figure out why he was trying to align both whole coils into one line. It wasn't until the end of the video that I realized where the magic was: You first make a vertical knot, and it's not something wonderful in and of itself. But! When you put the horizontal rod into those knot holes, it looks like the rod to the rod has been tied like a rope. Amazing! Thank you!!!
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. I appreciate your comment.

Thank you very much Abby, I appreciate your wonderful comment and am very happy that you liked my video.
Really brilliant! Would love to see how you make ornamental bends using materials like 6-10mm round bar, such that are used on security gates etc.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. Round bar seems to look very plain when it is finished and also sometimes it looks cheap like you bought it at a budget shop, not that there is really any difference in the amount of work needed to make it, I do think a rebar security gate would look awesome. I did a lettering video doing smaller bends you may find interesting. Thank you for your idea and comment. th-cam.com/video/JA-wk62Zghk/w-d-xo.html
Pure genius Gavin! That’s my most used knot when I’m backpacking, bushcrafting, and other outdoorsy pursuits! Also a big fan of the bowline and the truckers hitch! Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean? Ha! I guess that storm cooled it off in the rebar shop nicely? Thank Gav! Always love your shows! And Merry Christmas!
A huge thank you to you, I always appreciate your comments. This knot is also one of my main knots, I get the subtle hint Tom, I will have a play soon and see how I go. Merry Christmas to you and the family Tom, keep safe mate, we will chat in 2022.
It appears soft but it actually is solid and strong, like a real gentleman. Bravo.
Thank you very much.
Another interesting one Gavin Cant wait to get into my shop in the new year and try to copy what you make look easy. I can see myself wasting a lot of rebar to get even close to what you can do. keep the videos coming.
Thank you very much Doug, I am glad you liked it and I appreciate your comment. I am sure you will pick it up in no time. If I have bent rebar at a mark I try to never rebend at that mark again in another direction, I can bend it further in the same direction but not sideways it may crack, if you bend it too far and need to bend it back you will see what I mean. Bend it slowly and wider bends put less stress on the rebar. It took me a while to get used to working with it COLD, just have a play without trying to make anything and you will soon know how it works and what makes it crack or break, and the limits you have to work around to make something with it, if you are still having trouble heat is your friend. I wish you the best Merry Christmas to you and the family. Gavin
