I love the serenity. No surprise you carry a candle! If you pulled out a book, a loaf of bread and some cured meats - I'd be like - Yep That's Davie!

This brought back a memory when I started work in as an apprentice in an oil refinery. I had an old milbro fiberglass spinning rod. Not worth much but a nice little rod which I used from a child to a youth. The brass ferrules were jammed solid. Tried everything to feed them but no joy. So a mechanical fitter said he could free them. Took it in to work, gave it to the fitter. 30 minutes later he gave me back a separated rod alright. Shame about the heavily splintered fibreglass sections. He used a stilson on each section. I found out later they never asked him to work on expensive compressors etc.

Thanks for the tip Davie. Ive had a few rods really stuck in the past. Packed the stuck sections in ice to get them apart.

I wax all my rods every year with auto wax. Its amazing how much this helps when shooting line.

Oils and wax attract dirt/dust, so be sure to clean your ferrules often.

Nice tip Davie. Back in the day of metal ferrules I was told to rub the ferrule on the side of the nose. The problem I've had with some non ferrule rods is casting the the tip section off on the cast 😂 That calls for some fast retrieving or you'll lose the tip section! 😭

I love watching Davie tie flies and fly fish, but I cannot understand a word he is saying. Scotland has some beautiful countryside, and the water is to die for.

Another tip for stuck rod furrels from my father is as follows.
Take stuck rod furrel place behind your knees. Grip rod either side of your knees and using a steady pull use your knees ensuring that you keep your hands straight without twisting and 9 out if 10 it will release the stuck rod

Thanks Davie, have used candle wax. Also if the rod does get stuck when fishing it's usually because of heat expansion. Warmer temperatures during the day. Useful tip is dip the stuck section of rod in the water for a few minutes to allow it to contract. It should then pull apart relatively easily

I carry to small pieces of anti slip drawer liner in my bag. to use to grip the rod if they do stick together I have also saved a few fellow fishermen’s rod

Thanks for the tip! I already knew the suggestion of using surfboard wax if the sections didn't hold up throughout the day, as it's dangerous to force the joint and end up with the opposite problem, but I didn't know what I understand now to be the counterpart, for better sliding and protection. I will definitely use it from now on!

Good advice for years l used the side of my nose but it is a lot of work with a salmon rod with brass ferrules,l know the best in the land use wax but l feel concerned about picking up very small grit and subsequent wear.

Great tips. Carrying that candle also is a good idea for those of us who fish back country. An emergency fire starter.

As an aside, I have 2 piece St. Croix's one set up with a sink line and the other with a floating line and I keep them together all season. I've had a stuck ferrule at the end of the season and used Kelly Galloup's trick of putting tape on both sides of the joint, sticky side out. One of the reason stuck rods are so hard to get apart is because the diameter of a rod is so small, it's hard to get a good grip on it. Double sided tape or rigging tape on each half so you have tape stuck to the rod and stuck to your hand, has always worked for me to get them apart.

A piece of bicycle inner tube on each section is a great way of freeing jammed sections. Old school. Also I was told years ago to dip both male and female parts in the water. This washes any pieces of small grit which is often the cause of jammed sections.

Have had really tight jams streamline and due to brush, I did not want to walk out with a fully assembled rod. Take the reel off, place the ferrule between the back of your knees with both hands gripping just behind the knee joint. Slightly squat onto your fists and slowly, carefully, keeping the rod sections in line, spread your legs apart. It's worked everytime for me. Even metallic ferrules on my cane rods.

Do you get any issues with the wax on really hot days out on the rivers or Lochs. Just wondering if the joints slip if the wax starts to melt.

Broke a brand new Stickman rod by using ferrule wax. Never again. If the ferrules slip the risk of breaking during a cast is high and outweighs the hassle of a section sticking IMO.
