  • There are two types of pain: the physical and emotional discomfort that's an inevitable part of life, and the suffering we generate ourselves through our reactions.
We all experience pain, whether it's the backache from a long day or the heartbreak of losing someone dear to us.
But the suffering? That's something we build up through habits of craving - constantly chasing after what's pleasurable and avoiding what we fear, often leading us to feel frustrated, disappointed, and even stuck.
The challenge for many of us is managing the constant drive - what I call the "go engine" - where we're always pursuing the next goal, the next reward. We get trapped in cycles of wanting, dissatisfaction, and comparing ourselves to others, leading to needless suffering.
In this talk, I explore how we can break free from that loop, live more in the present, and achieve what we want in life without getting weighed down by stress and disappointment.
This is a practical discussion on how to cultivate a sense of contentment and fulfillment right here, right now - even as you pursue your dreams. We'll talk about mindful awareness, accepting frustrations, and shifting into a space where you can feel "enough" in your life, your work, and your relationships.
One of the best ways to cultivate more of a sense of feeling content is to practice gratitude and thankfulness for all that you already have. So you can find a meditation on that, here: rickhanson.com...

Thank you Rick. Very timely for me. I've finished a long novel written over many years after difficult life events holding me up, rigorously edited and proofread now without even celebrating properly! And recently I've been dreading the next stages, the getting it 'out there' and all that entails, thinking I will have to be a 'go machine' about it, with all that drive and musts going on. You've helped me see that I can still do the tasks but without the gritted tense feelings that go with the machine approach. I can approach it very differently...with a sense of calm and trust in myself to do what I know how to do and just trust it. Then the fates can decide where it goes. I can use this with the tail end of the family tensions too. So this can be a new approach for me having recently realised deep down that embracing a new way of doing is in order. I love listening to you and Forrest talk things out, glad you're out there in youtube land! (Ps I understand the enough concept too!)
