My dear mother-in-law taught me to do the hems with the second method (The doing nothing method!). thanks for showing us the alternative! I love when geometry and sewing go hand in hand!
I have so much respect for tailors. The amount of detail and attention and measurement to a garment to make it look good and lay right and wear properly, etc. I think your talent and skills are admirable. I love watching your videos and I appreciate them.
Game changing tips! I recently tried to shorten a pants pattern but encountered some (if not all 😅) the problems your mentioned! Tunred out fine but next time I'll do it the right way! Thank you once again! ❤
Yes, your tutorial makes so much sense now to me & why this happens. Before, I could see that there was too much material @ the seams, but I didn’t really know how to fix that. When I finished, truth be told it wasn’t a very attractive hem & I wasn’t happy w/it. I wanted to rip it out & start all over only not w/ the same results if I could help it? There’s a word for that: “insanity”. Doing the same thing over & over again, but expecting different results. Thank you for enlightening me about this matter, & know that it’s not just me.
I love that you give us more options. I always struggle with that and now i know how to fix shortening my short. Thank you for sharing this video with us! ❤❤
I learn something from you every video. I typically do the second option . Since it’s for me, it works, but your accordion fold and the zigzag seam is wonderful, and genius.
Most people can't wear stuff straight off the rack, or our bodies expand/contract and clothing needs minor alterations to get a good fit. It's so empowering to be able to do these things for yourself. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and helping us to help ourselves. 💖💐
this is super helpful!! I always struggle bc it doesn't "line up" and that throws me off! thanks for the very comprehensive instructions and explanations!
I have always hated when customers bring in shorts for hemming. The things you teach in this video are going to help SO much. It never occurred to me to fold the seams to draw the line, I have always measured and calculated how much I need to taper and it’s a miserable chore. I also never understood how to manage the V at the side seams. The shorts I’ve done have always been accepted by the customer, but I can see my mistakes and I didn’t know how to improve. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.
I'm so glad it was helpful! We are not alone. We all tailors face similar problems, and my motivation is to create conversations so we can help each other. Thanks for watching! 😊
This is exactly what I needed explained to me! I tried to hem shorts from pants and could not, for the life of me, figure out what I was doing wrong. Thanks so much for sharing your skills.
THANK you! Bless you! I've never gotten this right, and now I know why. I also have to shorten all my pants by quite a bit, so these techniques are especially helpful 😉i always learn when I I come to your channel. Anytime I need to do alterations I come to you.
This is so validating. I am NOT a professional tailor and I've been fudging ready to wear hems on my pants/shorts for years. So I thought, today I'm going to finally the right way only to find, I was doing it right all along. However, you did show me a few more tips that will make my hems look much better. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!
I will need to watch and reach to understand how to mark the hem length correctly for the first marking. I don't quite understand how the line wasn't straight if you connected your marks. Your talent is amazing, and thank you for trying to teach a dummy like me.
My gran madr clothes first out of necessity and then as a job to help pay for raising her kids. Your work is incredible and these videos are so wonderful. Thank you for making them!
Love those tips! I was really blown away by the false cuff for some reason LOL I guess I never thought of doing it that way. You are awesome thanks for all of your great sewing advice!
Thank you for posting this. I was going to ask you to do a tutorial on cutting jeans off to make "cut offs" I am assuming same principle is used for cutting off jeans to the new. length want the shorts (cut offs) to be. I will have to watch this tutorial several times so I can understand all the great info provided. I could sew that cuff in the 70's but alas over the years of not using it I have forgotten how to do it. It does make a nice no flop over cuff especially on women's trousers.
🤣 the second option on the first pair of pink pants would really set off my ocd about doing things “right” 🤣🤣🤣 but as “right” is in the eye of the beholder who can say what is right??!! Thanks for showing so many ways to do this, you seem to be the only place on you tube I can find such practical solutions 😊
I really lime the third.method(yellow shorts...false cuff?) I telly need to practice.that one before working in my customers pants......thank you once again for clever method of sewing!!!
Thank you so very much for the explanation. I have struggled with this problem many times. After a number of years I started doing the hem the way you showed us but didn't understand the why it worked. part.
Omg! I attempted to modify the length on a couple of pairs of shorts, but when I measured, my lines never ended up being straight once I lined up the seams. I thought I was messing up and gave up; I didn't realize they were supposed to be like that! I was doing it right all along!
This is great, thank you for explaining this so well! Do you have a video on how to turn long sleeve shirts into short sleeve? If not it would be wonderful to see you explain this - it's a similar issue, but made even more difficult as the sleeve angle is so steep....and then there's the flat felled seams to deal with....a video showing how you tackle this would be brilliant!!
Yes I struggled with shorts when taking pants my husband asked me to make into shorts . I want to try the cuff you did! That looks good because I'm tried of cuffs that fall down lol!
I just last week shortened three pairs. Yes, I ran into this issue. I did the second method where I angled the stitch line but it wasn't enough to straighten out the hem so there was a large gap when I folded it up. Not very nice looking. I will have to be more careful cutting next time so the cut is perpendicular as you demonstrated.
As usual, an excellent lesson on hemming shorts. I guess I'm lazy because I most often use your second way when hemming. I really am glad that I found your channel. You cover topics that most don't. Thanks ❤
I appreciate this video. I am having a problem with shortening a tapered sleeve. The factory seam was sewed a little twisted. I am going to open the seam and see if I can use your technique to hem the sleeve.
As always I’m amazed at all the possible techniques and solutions to get good results! Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to all these wonderful amazing videos I am like a kid in a candy store every time a video pops up !! Lol I can’t wait to try these ! Thank you
Please do a tutorial on shortening sleeves, especially turning a long sleeve into a 3/4 or elbow length sleeve. And how to mark and cut the long sleeve men's shirt to make a short sleeve shirt. Thank you for considering this idea for a video.
Great information! My problem is knowing which seam on a felled seam I need to measure from. If I use one seam on one leg and the other seam on the other leg I end up with cockeyed shorts [or pants].
Oh! Yes. This doesn't work when the fell seam isn't exactly on the center. To avoid this inconvenience, try to place your pants very stretched out over the table and cut the two legs at once as you see on the video. I hope this helps! 😊
Your Tutorials are so Good. Thank you so much. I have problems to shorten Jeans 👖 into shorts. It looks not good, i don’t know how to cut. Measuring from the seam? Sorry my englisch isnt very well 😅❤
Very good description. This happened to me when making a L/S shirt into a S/S. I put a small rectangle piece of fabric to fill the space where the fabric is not perpendicular just to add support.
I always stitch from the outside of the garment. I feel the stitching never looks as good from the underside, even with effort put in to balance thread tension just right. It just always looks a little less good for some reason. 7:37 vs 7:39 it's just a very slight difference, I know, but the stitched side always looks a little better.
Thanks so much! This comment flatters me so much. Currently, I'm not doing so, but maybe in the future, when I can figure out how to make sure that the measurements will be correct. Cheers 😊
My dear mother-in-law taught me to do the hems with the second method (The doing nothing method!). thanks for showing us the alternative! I love when geometry and sewing go hand in hand!
Glad it was helpful! 😊
I always mess up shorts but I never realized it was a universal problem others had! Thank you for explaining this!
Happy to help! 🥰
I really appreciate seeing the different alternatives to hemming shorts. It's important to mark and cut and sew at the proper angles. Thank you!
Thanks for watching 🥰
Wow, the second one seems easier to me, but they’re all great alternatives. Thank you for sharing your experience and tips with us!
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching 😊
I have so much respect for tailors. The amount of detail and attention and measurement to a garment to make it look good and lay right and wear properly, etc. I think your talent and skills are admirable. I love watching your videos and I appreciate them.

Also, I appreciate your using the small pattern to angle the hem by measuring the length from the side seam. Thank you!
this is super helpful!! I always struggle bc it doesn't "line up" and that throws me off! thanks for the very comprehensive instructions and explanations!
This is a lifesaver - my daughter has had me transform so many pairs of jeans into shorts - or re-shorten shorts, etc! Now I know how, thank you!
Wonderful! Thanks for watching 🥰
🤯🤯🤯 Mind blown! Now I know why I struggled with the hems of shorts when made from pants! Thank you for this invaluable lesson!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching 🥰
I had never seen these measurements procedures. I will definitely re-watch this a few more times.
❤ your videos so well done.
Thanks so much 😊

Brilliant techniques. I always have trouble hemming straight. Now I know why! Cheers.
Glad you liked them 😊
Yes, I struggled with cuff hem before. This hem technique makes the fabric sit down nicely and it looks a lot less bulky. Thank you!!!
You’re welcome 😊
This is exactly what I needed explained to me! I tried to hem shorts from pants and could not, for the life of me, figure out what I was doing wrong. Thanks so much for sharing your skills.
Ohhhh im so glad to help!! It’s something you don’t expect to be so tricky, which is why I made a whole video on it!!
Thank you for this tutorial! I foolishly thought this was going to be so easy not thinking about sloping of the legs. Thanks for all you do!!!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching 🥰
You have made my sewing sooooo much better! Thank you so much!

God bless you for sharing so much knowledge for free.If I could I would spend a year working for you in exchange for knowledge and teaching ♥️🙏
Wow, thank you 😊
I made a pair of self drafted shorts today and could not figure out why the hem was crooked, then your video popped up...perfect timing! Thank you!!
Great to hear! 🥰🥰🥰

Thanks for the false cuff. That seems a really nice way to save a lack of material problem.

Such a useful and informative video. Thank you. I do this all the time (cut off my jeans) and struggled with the hems. Now I understand.
Glad you liked it 😊
I love the 2nd option. Seems much easier.
I think so, too! 🥰

I appreciate this video. I am having a problem with shortening a tapered sleeve. The factory seam was sewed a little twisted. I am going to open the seam and see if I can use your technique to hem the sleeve.
Yes. I usually open the seam and leave it opened inside, like the second option of the pink pants. Good luck! 😊
I just love your videos! Thank you for teaching me such great techniques

I've watch many of your videos and have truly learned and enjoyed them. Please tell me what type of tailor's chalk you use, waxed or unwanted?
Hi! I use waxed chalk. It called Carmel disappearing tailor chalk. Cheers 😊
Genial…Me encanta este video. Gracias
Gracias! 🤗

That false cuff is genius
Thanks 💕
I so enjoy your channel.
I appreciate that! 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for this tutorial! Do you ever use a blind hem machine?
Thanks 💕 I use the blind hem very often. Cheers 😊
I like that last way the best. Just cut the him open and sew., you are a Awesome Taylor. I mean, awesome.
Aweee! You are so kind 💕 Thanks so much!
Wow . . great video!!!
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it 🥰
Using the first technique when you angled the side seam because of difference in width at hem, will this method work when shortening slacks ?
Sewing Police...😂😂 Love it...

I totally agree! I do that too very often. Cheers!
4:10 - I'm confused because it doesn't look like it was perpendicular on the back side.
Hi! I meant perpendicular to the crease line. Check the 4:13 time and you will see it. Cheers 😊
The last one would be less ironing later on.
Exactly! And it will stay up 🥰
❤love it
🥰🥰🥰
Good afternoon, do you accept alteration requests through the mail? I do not trust anyone around my area.
Thanks so much! This comment flatters me so much. Currently, I'm not doing so, but maybe in the future, when I can figure out how to make sure that the measurements will be correct. Cheers 😊
