    Hummingbirds are another one that goes into torpor. In fact, hummingbirds do it for the opposite reason: their metabolisms are ridiculously fast. Since they literally live on sugar water, they burn through calories almost as fast as they consume them, meaning their lives are basically a constant search for food, and if they go without for too long, they go into torpor. It's actually the only way they sleep. They literally only have two speeds: off and on

      www.fws.gov/nwrs/threecolumn.aspx?id=2147491782
      Hummingbirds are native to most of the southern and coastal United States. If you put out a feeder you're practically guaranteed to get some. They especially like feeders because, again, their lives are spent constantly feeding, and any given flower patch is only in bloom for a couple of weeks, tops. Meanwhile, a feeder is always there and always full.

    • @SpaghettiToaster
      @SpaghettiToaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@michealdrake3421 Makes you wonder, assuming humans stay around for long enough, if Hummingbirds will evolve to take advantage of feeders by becoming bulkier and less agile and just camp at the feeder. It would be funny if this led to these subspecies just evolving back to something that looks like a normal bird.

    • @michealdrake3421
      @michealdrake3421 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Oh, one more thing. If you put up a hummingbird feeder, don't use store bought nectar, especially the red stuff. The red dye is really bad for them. Instead, just boil some water in a pot and stir in sugar at a ratio of 2 parts water to 1 part sugar. Any excess can be stored in the refrigerator

    A survival strategy based on dumb luck, dum-de-dum, hope nothing bad happens cause I'm too cute to die. Actually, biting into a sloth sounds pretty unappetizing with up to a third consisting of simmering leaf stew and there isn't much meat on the bones. The meat is probably poor quality due to the diet and you have to fight your way through that nasty hair.
    I'd say, it isn't worth the effort of pulling it out of the tree for tigers and human hunters alike, and hanging under the branches makes it hard for the harpies so they manage to get by under the radar.

    The opener kinda does sloths an injustice. They risk coming down from the trees to poop so they can bury it and hide their droppings from predators. They’re extremely sedentary, so if they just let their droppings fall underneath them it’d be an easy sign for predators to identify a free meal that won’t even fight back. Not only that, but the moss, mold, and general filth on a sloth’s pelt helps to dissuade predators from actually eating it because it tastes so disgusting. If it weren’t for their diet being so counter to their metabolisms, they’d be more like friendlier koalas just sleeping a lot but still able to move about relatively uninhibited.
