Excellent… You spoke of some awesome observations. Best advise I’ve heard on a drum channel. Thanks for your knowledge.

Good video Jacob, even though it ended abrupt in a sentence.
For me, I can honestly say that I've never been content with my playing, not ever. But at the same time, I rarely had any red light fever at gigs or recordings.
The band I played in for 25 years never had that kind of money to afford recordings with a lot of takes. We usually played live in the studio with a couple of retakes if it sounded bad. I didn't experience any red light fever in any recordings I did, although I listned back to my playing with slight contempt.
So in less than a month I'm going to have my first live gig in 6 or 7 years. I'm quite stoked.
I know I'm never going to be able to get every song done right, and there's going to be quite a lot of simplifications on the drum parts, because I don't have the skill level, or the time to learn the parts as I wish them to come out. It's a cover band, and the original drummers in those bands are WAY better than me.
I'm like a karaoke drummer, compared to the original drummers.
I think that mindset makes me less prone to get that fever. Maybe I'm biased how others will judge me, thinking they'll rule me off as a mediocre drummer anyway.
But I will definitely get satisfaction from playing live, even if my performance won't be good.

Great video!! I’ve just searched for this subject. I record at home (guitars etc) I just lost the plot as I’ve tried to record something after practicing perfectly!! Record button goes on and boom can’t even play the thing!! 15 takes later nearly smashed the gear up lol!! Gave up til later!! My problem is I find I’ve got a temper and nerves too which is stupid really! Practice does make perfect definitely and not striving for perfection at all costs!! Obviously your advice works brilliantly for everything so thanks for this it’s really helpful

Thanks man I appreciate it. Just take it easy on yourself I reckon. It's so easy to demand a lot and it's good to have high standards but if we can't see any good in our playing, we'll be miserable forever. Thanks for watching!

Hmm, interesting. I’m like completely the other way around. Most of my best playing has been live and on recordings. “The red light” gives me that extra adrenaline to really give it that extra energy and focus. Possibly this is an educational thing, you come from a educated jazz background (if I’ve got it right), where everything is scrutinized. I’m an uneducated rock drummers who just naively love to play (without having too much thoughts of what I actually do). But I totally agree that one should focus on stuff that’s already in your backbone, take that and run with it as long as you can in a live or studio environment. Rehearsals is to extend your backbone, but don’t use it in a exposed situation if you haven’t mastered it yet, then you’re in for some serious “red light fever” 😅😂

As for the list thing, my approach has been to root out why I feel the way mentioned in the line item and root it out. It gets really personal when doing it like that, so it might not be for everyone.
However, Recording sessions and passing them out to close people for feedback has helped my personal and group play tremendously. Would recommend for everyone to try.

I like that you mentioned feedback. A little bit of positive feedback goes a long way!
