    Thanks Tom. Informative as usual. I’ve got a Tesla M3 with gen 3 charger and powerwall. I’m using charge HQ and it’s brilliant. The solar tracking function in charge HQ allows only excess solar to charge my Tesla. It gets all the info it needs via the powerwall. This was an easy setup with all the info you need on the charge HQ website. It doesn’t matter that Charge HQ can’t talk to the gen 3 charger if you have a powerwall. I’ve signed up to the Tesla energy plan so to take advantage of the feed in tariff after 2pm charge HQ will also stop charging my Tesla at this time. There’s endless combinations of timing and scheduling I can do. Charge HQ has made managing my solar and charging a breeze. I wish I knew about this when I first got my M3. Hope this helps someone. It’s you Tom I need to thank as you made me aware of charge HQ over a year ago.

    Hey Tom you convinced me that I made the right choice of purchasing a Tesla Gen 3 charger. I looked at plenty of non-Tesla chargers & just can’t justify the extra expense for no real world advantage. I tend to just charge at night 00:00-06:00 at 8c/Kw rather than use solar. This leaves the solar generation for my pool pump & thirsty air conditioner & export excess @ 8c/Kw. In winter when solar is next to useless I will charge 11:00-14:00 for free from the grid. I don’t care where my power comes from as I don’t buy into the Man Made Climate Change theory so cheapest is best. The extra cost of batteries & power meters just don’t add up at the moment but I’m glad you have invested to show what can be achieved. Keep up the great reviews

    I have a complicated charge setup using custom software (I created for my self that will only ever work on my setup) that balances chaging my solar battery and Model Y from solar only. Currently producing 13 KW solar and feeding 7KW to my solar batteries and 3 Kw to my model Y and the remaining 3 kw consumed by my home currently estimated to finish charging between 3 to 3:30. It estimates a 30 min bracket based on house usage and solar generation forecast data.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Is your solar inverter single or three phase? Given you have a regular large solar excess, I presume you have a three phase inverter ... in which case a single phase installation of the Wallbox will mean that you may only benefit from 1/3 of the excess solar production. I can't find any sources online to confirm this so I'm happy to be corrected. Unfortunately as you can see even with a three phase Wallbox setup you'll still only get 1/3 of the excess production ... this is the disadvantage of vehicles with single phase onboard chargers such as the Seal 😔

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The AC "full charge" time should be seen as an outdated concept and something most EV owners don't put into practice. Most of us top up a bit either every night or every few nights or couple of times a week depending on our usage. For example I will only charge max 4h each night (0000 to 0400) due to cheaper tariffs from my provider, Powershop. But if you must know, it is a matter of a simple calculation. A 82kWh battery charging at 7kW will take approx 11-12 hours for a "full charge"

    Hey Tom, how does the Wallbox Pulsar go switching between 1 Phase and 3 Phase when Solar ramps up and down. I bought a Fronius Wattpilot GO 22J and I am extremely disappointed with the way it moves between single and 3 phase.
    The Wattpilot GO stops charging on single phase, then switches to 3 phase to start charging at a higher rate. On a cloudy day the unit stops and starts continually.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So with three phase installations, if you leave it on "full green" it requires a minimum of 4.1kW before it will start charging on three phase. On "Eco Mode" it will only need 1.4kW on three phase so I generally leave it on Eco Mode otherwise it will just switch off if it's any lower than 4.1kW on Eco Mode. I explain it around 6:30

    The Wallbox load management is not detecting that the Seal is a single phase car and adjusting its load management accordingly, hence the difference in the unconsumed solar between the Seal and Tesla. It actually has nothing to do with the Seal.
    Our charging system, which is also three phase, detects the number of phases where there is a current draw by the EV and adjusts its load management accordingly. :-) Wallbox needs that capability without having to specifically purchase a single phase charger as I'm sure many single phase EVs will be plugged into its three phase charger with load management.
    Re. scheduling, we had to comply with the UK smart charging regulations which requires a randomised 10 minute window of when a scheduled charge begins. I can see this becoming a requirement here. The requirement is in place so that many EVSEs don't all start charging at once. It is a reasonable thing for an EVSE to incorporate, particularly if they also need to operate in the UK.
    Finally, the loss of current between the EVSE and the Seal is BYD's issue. Nothing to do with the EVSE, its cable or plug.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately I’m not sure if the Wallbox can cycle between the different phases to account for the change in supply 😔
      - Agreed the randomised 10min window is a sensible requirement
      I’ll have to find out more why there is so much loss between the EVSE and the car

    • @huntchris
      @huntchris 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm pretty sure it is the Seal at fault re current loss@@LudicrousFeed - you should see something similar re. the Tesla charger and Seal.
      Re. the EVSE and cycling phases... not quite what I mean. We detect the current draw of the EV and then relay that info back to the load management via the EVSE. The load management then considers the number of phases actually being drawn from before deciding how much more to allocate. If it detects a single phase then it will provide all remaining current avaialble to that single phase. Otherwise it has to divide by the number of phases. I'm pretty sure Wallbox are measuring the current per phase at the EVSE and could do something similar if they wanted.

      @@LudicrousFeed If you are game to open up the wallbox (turn it off at the wall!) then if there are three CTs then they have the hardware in place to do what we do. I'm pretty sure they'll have three CTs, otherwise they'd just be guessing the draw on the other two phases given a single CT. And that would be wrong. :-)

    I am not convinced just yet that charging an EV is a good thing in your garage. Certainly, the charge points inside the garage is a good idea for security purposes, but I would be passing the cable out to your driveway and recharging your EVs out there. Not sure how you get on in an apartment situation (case by case I guess). I know this seems extreme and hey, what could possibly go wrong? Right.
    The chargers are very smart and full of great options, but it is like having a fuel service station install the bowser at your place, and at your cost. I hope you can lock out the power wall, just in case you need the energy for something else.
    Could the loses on the BYD be due to preconditioning of the battery pack?
