Subtly fading in Taylor Swift when you said "It's giving only supporting feminism when it benefits me" has me dying 😂it does not get said often enough, let alone so funnily, LOL.
as a Brit who was one of five active Lily Allen stans when this dropped, it was a complete time capsule, thanks for the trip down memory lane! also obsessed with Kamek being added to the album cover
I'm glad you made this video bc her statement blaming her kids is giving major "Pregnant Women are Smug" by Garfunkel and Oates. But in this case, people who are parents are smug. Glad she decided to create humans just to blame them for her career flop...??
Not sure of the context. Was she actually blaming having kids for ruining her career because she had to take time off to take care of them. Or was she blaming society and the industry for looking down on mothers and not giving them the same respect once they have kids?
As someone that was ending middle school when fucking Smile came out 😢 i teared up when you said this came out when you were in middle school, anyway im impressed on your take as someone who i would consider only just started to have more formative memories of song and you didnt have the bias, i never heard Sheezus (i was obsessed with Kpop then) and kinda thankful I strayed from anglophone genres then
What a strange yet entertaining video filled with wrong opinions. This album was so good and really made fun of the albums you were tried to say she was confirming to. She also didn’t wanna do the album as well and really made the best of a bad situation. It’s clear you’re bandwagoning onto the bad press she’s currently receiving what a cheap way to bring attention to your videos.
@@xlavenderskies His opinion is based on misunderstanding, or he is lying. Lily's texts are very sarcastic and so it is here. I don't know about any current (or past) bad press or any "dramatic" situation she is in, yet I don't agree with anything the videomaker says in this video (to the point of almost 6 minutes, I didn't want to spend more time watching).
Good video! Honestly I really think that’s her main issue is the distance between all of the albums (not only in years, but with the music genre): she started her career as a (somewhat) different genre from the other pop girls (she wasn’t SOLID pop, with mix with some more soft stuff), and her image to me was pretty iconic. I don’t see her need to blame the kids for her failures😭😭 she waiting FOUR YEARS (which is an enormous time in the music industry) to put out an album that I can only describe as fragile (no good deep cuts, and the singles were hit or miss), then WAITING another FOUR YEAR to put out No Shame (which was just a flop, not even iconic😭)… her probability to remain as a pop star were below 0, so her latest statement makes me really mad
Sheezus the song itself and single, she was very blatant that she was ready to quit the game. She had enough. Let her go in peace, she didn't kill her own career, she immortalized herself. Her songwriting is and was ahead of it's time.
watching clips of her 2014 videos brings back faint memories of listening to her single and being disappointed lol. Also, didn't realise Americans knew what John Lewis is
Her somewhere only we know cover slays I'll die on this hill , its a wtf when albums include a random single track way back when and it's more consideration for us as they don't sell single cds anymore or even give them out as promotion so when they are tacked on its usually so the song makes it onto physical media as it's, it's last hope before cleansing and the starting the sessions for the next album lol
great video! i was obsessed with lily allen when i was a kid, i used to sit for hours typing up all the lyrics to all the songs on alright still (i absolutely did not know what they meant but i knew my parents disapproved), those were the days!! sheezus was such a massive flop and felt dated even as it was first released, but ngl i still listen to l8 cmmr sometimes 👀
this album was a pop reawakening for me when this came out while I was I middle school, despite not even hearing any of her previous material. this album and her next one, No Shame, were personal favorites of mine despite the critical reactions.
air balloon was a pretty popular song of all of them, and it turned out it's also the one lily Allen HATED most out of the whole album, i saw an interview snippet where she said some people who were working with her REALLY wanted to stick to a part about an air balloon that she wrote, and she ended up losing a lot of control in the production of the song which is a shame 😔
3:12 sheezus dropped long enough after art pop for her to have written it and put it together but otherwise it’s probably about Gaga’s 2009 vma performance of paparazzi
i don’t think lily was starting beef or making shady comments about the celebrities she name dropped in sheezus. the whole first verse is about her feeling like she’s being forced to come back and being thrown “in the ring” of vying for the general public’s attention as a woman in music. when i first heard the song, i thought she was saying all that stuff like she was the general public commenting on all those other women. like the gaga line. this is the best way i can explain so hopefully it makes sense. she herself isn’t making fun of gaga, she’s repeating what people have said about her. think of it like this: lily is mocking those people with “wErE aLl WaTcHiNg GaGa, LoL hAhA” but then lily defends gaga by saying “dying for her art so really she’s a martyr.” the same goes for the other lines too. “riri isn’t scared of katy perry’s roaring” and “queen bee’s gone back to the drawing” both sound like headlines from TMZ or people magazine. i also think lilly is self aware enough to know that in 2014, Rihanna, Gaga, Katy Perry, Lorde and all other mainstream pop girls were UNTOUCHABLE, so lily allen wasn’t really gonna do much in terms of causing drama. overall, i think it’s a commentary on women in music. sorry for the rant, i’m stoned teehee.
no i definitely agree it was supposed to be ironic, that’s why i included the interview at 3:23! it was her roundabout way of paying them respect, which considering her reputation in the press ppl probably wanted to spin it that way to make a story out of it (and ur fine same lol, i just appreciate the passion)
I love Shesus and all the songs, including air balloon. Its not me its you is the best album to me and the most nostalgic though. In 2014 I was contsantly listening to Lilly Allen, Gaga, Fergie, and the 2005 PCD album.
I love Lily, she was the soundtrack to my teens, but Sheezus is by far her worst album. I remember being so excited for it to come out, I was 19, young, gay, and dying for new music from my queen and...it was bad. I was so disappointed! At least No Shame was good and it didnt leave a bad taste in our mouths.
I was a Lily stan before this because of my dad and I was in 8th grade when it dropped. I still loved a lot of the songs but I noticed this album wasn’t as perfect as her other 2 at the time. I would only listen to certain songs off of this album instead of the whole album like I did with alright, still and it’s not me it’s you. I definitely wish Lily put out more music because she’s been one of my favorites ❤
I do remember pitchfork doing a story about someone online saying Lily's singles were "rubbish." Lily responded to that person saying, they were because she supposedly had better songs that the label didn't want on the album 🤷. I still thought URL badman, hard out here, and L8cmmer were classic Lily songs. Even though URL badman had the worst song title, the dated references don't hurt the song so much imo. The message itself aged disturbingly well holy fuck. Also...the album after Sheezus wasn't.....that great either? It was like less witty, a bit more serious.
All you kids doing understand when you say what ended that musicians career and nothing ended it. Most if not all popular pop stars and bands have a 7 to 10 year run it’s reality this industry is tuff and recipe for fame is hard to understand
but... but... what about her album after Sheezus, No Shame? but yeah really like all the singles from Sheezus when I was a teeanger and now I realized how bland they are
There is so much wrong with this video 🫠 I'm not gonna say that Sheezus is a good album necessarily, but to just dismiss Take My Place and Life For Me, and not even talk about the deluxe tracks, which were much more representative of the album she wanted to make, if she didnt cave to record label demands? Girl, be so for real
Problem in Sheezus is that she was tired. She was lazy. Too tired to think about good subjects to write about and lazy enough to do what everybody was doing sonically. Even in the Sheezus chorus cause she can write better than simply list names to throw shade. Its the same woman who writes No Shame years after.
yes i know artpop came out in 2013… i try to include at least one falsehood in each video to keep you guys on your toes !
Subtly fading in Taylor Swift when you said "It's giving only supporting feminism when it benefits me" has me dying 😂it does not get said often enough, let alone so funnily, LOL.
i didn't think she dropped the f slur, i took it as 'bring some cigarettes, bring some rizlas'
My jaw dropped at that Katy Perry tweet about Sky Ferreira's baby. Jesus Christ lol.
apparently they were friends but it’s still wild to look back on
Katy perry's a zionist too. She's not a great person. Or at least not the most educated or most loyal of friends.
5:50 take my place isn’t a breakup anthem it’s about a miscarriage
(And the ‘f slur’ in our time is just British slang for cigarettes)
as a Brit who was one of five active Lily Allen stans when this dropped, it was a complete time capsule, thanks for the trip down memory lane! also obsessed with Kamek being added to the album cover
Lily ABSOLUTELY HATES air balloon, she didn’t wanted to release it, but her recording label wanted it to be a single, so she had no choice.
I did not even know that Lily had a US audience. 😭 I actually enjoyed the album at the time. It was her 'Yeezus' 💀
lol it’s small but it exists
Smile was pretty huge over here
As one of her US fans, fucking loved her since her first EP.
that photo of katy, grimes and rihanna had me HOWLING
Her album after Sheezus, No Shame is amazing. It came around the same time as her book which was also amazing.
Absolutely loved Sheezus, URL Badman & Hard Out Here
Also her 2018 album no shame is actually really really good caught me off guard, I still listen to it
I'm glad you made this video bc her statement blaming her kids is giving major "Pregnant Women are Smug" by Garfunkel and Oates. But in this case, people who are parents are smug. Glad she decided to create humans just to blame them for her career flop...??

I really like Hard Out Here, Air Balloon & Our Time when I was a kid 😅
Hard Out Here is a bop, as ironically problematic as it is
ikr i’m still kinda tapping my foot if i just ignore what she’s saying lol
As someone that was ending middle school when fucking Smile came out 😢 i teared up when you said this came out when you were in middle school, anyway im impressed on your take as someone who i would consider only just started to have more formative memories of song and you didnt have the bias, i never heard Sheezus (i was obsessed with Kpop then) and kinda thankful I strayed from anglophone genres then
yeah you didn’t miss much with this one 😭
I loved this album in middle school. Even though I can’t stand Lily’s comments nowadays, looking back at this album is so nostalgic
Wait, WHAT IS SHE SAYING 😭😭😭?!?!
Iconic channel, you should do a video about M.I.A and her new “mata” era because things are looking dark and ominous
funny you mention her…
So many lies in this video trying to make her look bad... ??
Say what u want but Insincerely Yours WILL ALWAYS BE THAT GIRL. It's one of my most played songs ever for a reason
I danced to Air Balloon and Hard out here when i was a kid

exactly so weird that she would kinda pin the blame like that 😭 as it turns out the quality of the music does matter

I used to listen to url badman and hard out here soooo often, url badman is such a cringe fest but its catchy at the same time 😭
the only thing that could have made it more 2014 would be if they got DJ snake on the track and mentioned buzzfeed
the rupaul wheel thing was so funny
watching clips of her 2014 videos brings back faint memories of listening to her single and being disappointed lol. Also, didn't realise Americans knew what John Lewis is
"K.I.D. ain't one to f with when she's only on her debut" is in reference to K.I.D. (kids in distress lead singer, Kara Lane)

valid i didn’t think about it that way
I enjoyed those songs personally

That "music from a popeyes commercial" is a genre from Louisiana called Zydeco.
Nah sos this album is fun

Slight correction, ARTOP was out 6 months before Sheezus, the first single for Sheezus was out a week after ARTPOP dropped.
oops! 😭
This video is, spell it with me everyone, I-C-O-N-I-Q-U-E!
this video is very underresearched and annoying
omg why??
The girls that get it get it
I love the energy. Very the gays. I like it.

i actually love air balloon lol

I need you to do more era/album breakdowns for other artists! Charli crash NEXT
you don’t want me to make a video about crash… 😭
I'm surprised I loved it in highschool. I liked the variety it had. I never paid attention to the lyrics though
this album is exactly what i thought of when she said lmaooo shes stayed just grasping at straws to be relevant
Woah! I assumed you were a huge TH-camr while watching! Give it a single month I bet you’ll have 10,000 subs haha
lol let’s hope
omg i LOVED Sheezus when it came out in highschool

Crash by CHARLI XCX is not a flop! It got to Number 1 in the UK and also got to Number 1 in many other countries as well...

The goats on URL Badman is due to a meme of the time.
