One thing worth thinking about also could be how important nowadays the lore of an artist or piece of media is and how we tend to try to know the nichest things about them. Maybe unreleased Sophie songs’s appeal is the fact that they are unreleased. Releasing them would make them lose a kind of secretive magic. For example i think the disappearance of Ayesha Erotica for years actually helped her become this now famous persona that everyone has heard about.
i just dont like how people are attacking her brother when he must be feeling a lot of pain having to finish sophie's album. im just really impressed that he has the strength to finish it and put it out
Oooh that hyperpop opinion is a fun one, and one i’ve been struggling with. My opinion used to be that SOPHIE was the only one that made true hyperpop, and wether you were hyperpop or not hinged on the fact of how similar you were to SOPHIE. So like, Charli XCX and PC music was 100% Hyperpop, 100 Gecs and Dorian Electra were probably hyperpop, but whatever trap or digicore bs that was coming out of drain gain or d0llywood1 or early jane remover was not. My opinions on this have sense changed, because hyperpop as a spotify term was kinda co-opted by spotify executives to describe that trap heavy, edm and brostep maximalist sound I despise, but i’ve always been the opinion that hyperpop as a word was always created and first used to describe PC Music and SOPHIE. Basically, I think Apple Music’s Hyper Pop Playlist is great, Spotify’s hyperpop playlist is trash, Apple music glitch playlist is just trying to copy spotify’s bad playlists, and spotify needs to go back to the eary 2000s to play “glitchcore” in front of fans of real glitchcore so they can laugh in their face and play venetian snares.
@@msnicotiana He’s breakcore and glitchcore. Glitchcore is a genre from the early 2000s that stemmed from the idm scene in parallel to breakcore and mashcore. there is no better example of what glitchcore sounds like imo than nepetalactone, and to me, songs about my cats is the definitive glitchcore project that definds glitchcore sounds. Yah, 100% my so called life and my love is a bulldozer is breakcore, but songs about my cats is full glitch. Do you have another 2000s glitchcore album or artists you feels better represents the genre?
@@msnicotiana Because no, every venetian snares song isn’t breakcore. He makes breakcore, mashcore, idm, and, glitchcore. It’s just one of the many hyper-complex sonic pallets you can paint with in modern tracker software.
@@msnicotiana Like I get the need to defend venetian snares legacy, I have also been horrified at how spotify and the mainstream so fragrantly disregards music terminology, but if you’re going to do that, at least try to understand that there might be things you don’t know about. I get it, it’s hard, it’s basically impossible to find sources on it nowadays (I literally cannot find a single album that i can call primarily glitchcore besides songs about my cats. Like, it’s so hard). And glitchcore may have been used at the time to describe the same or similar sound as breakcore or mashcore as opposed to a distinct genre, and many artists like to blend between all 3 sounds fluidily (See ruby my dear’s brame for a great example of this) But in anycase, there have been references of the term used since the early 2000s to describe the kind of sound venetian snares was making. But my main point is this: There’s no need for violence, I’m trying to preserve the cultural legacy of breakcore and the 2000s underground as much as you are.
So satisfying hearing someone who has actually been around the block in terms of SOPHIE releases, no one could agree or quite grasp OLEPUI either. And not a single critic fucked w PRODUCT so…
The mad thing about a lot of the criticism aimed at this album is that her brother has openly said this was the direction Sophie was going in and the track listing for the album along with nearly all the compositions being completed prior to her passing. (Sophie played a lot of these tracks during her final live performances) The emptiness of not having her image be front and centre of the promo material is actually a genius stroke in my mind. Whether she intended for this to be the case or not, it’s symbolic of her loss and us as the audience embracing that sense of emptiness now she’s gone. I greatly respect her brother for sticking to Sophie’s vision for the album rather than releasing a random collection of tracks that she had no intention of putting into a compilation before she died. (Let’s not forget she wasn’t ever a fan of sticking to the same tracks and replaying her greatest hits just because she could) She jokingly told people to ‘fuck off’ when crowds asked for ‘Immaterial’ during some of her last performances!. 😂. That’s what made her a pioneer , she was constantly looking forwards and never backwards…
I'll be completely honest after listening to the first six tracks of the record I had to stop because it was so jarring and not at all what I was expecting. Initially I felt kind of insulted by how unfinished some of the tracks felt (especially Plunging Asymptote), but I think the conclusion I've come to is that I'm just not ready for this album. SOPHIE's death is probably the most devastating loss of an artist I'll ever experience in my lifetime, I've often likened it to the death of Jimi Hendrix because of not only the tragedy of the way they died but the immense creative potential that was lost. Not a week goes by that I don't think about SOPHIE at least a few times, and over the years I Love Every Person's Insides (ty for pronouncing it properly btw) has become my favorite album of all time. I hold SOPHIE and her music in very high esteem and I think this album just reminded me of that. Most likely I won't do a 180 and love this record with time and an entire listen but its hard to say, I've completely changed my opinion on some albums after giving myself years to digest them. What I can say for certain though is that I don't think SOPHIE's family is exploiting her by any stretch of the imagination and I think its kinda fucked up that some people would go there at all. If that were the case we would have gotten this album a lot sooner and it probably wouldn't be the only one. Fuck, I just miss SOPHIE. Idk what else to say.
@@sleepdealer10a lot of people are running wild with their imaginations and expectations of what they think SOPHIEs music is supposed to be instead of just enjoying it as she saw it and intended in all its sonic diversity
imo “shouldn’t they have released songs popular with fans?” NO because we are not the artist we are the listener. whether you like the album or not, this was Sophies vision. at first i was disappointed, and then i listened again without my preconceived notions and after watching the interview and hearing about the album’s creation i began to appreciate it more. also im literally obsessed, currently Do You Wanna Be Alive is my fav.
there is something weirdly upsetting about the comment section, like grief could only be complete if we get the genres right. this mattered so much to people and they own so much of her still
I just hope that we get a deluxe version where most of the fan favourites are released as I understand that this album had a clear vision that should best be left untouched, but I still want those tracks goddammit.
@@ar-yj8lb yeah that's why I think that if you release them, you should do it now with. deluxe that's not on vinyl to really show that its just an extra with no interest to make money. I also would understand when they dont do it, because they are unsure what SOPHIE would've wanted though.
obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion regarding the album, as they would be for any other album by any other artist. its ridiculous for someone to force themselves to like the album based solely on sophie tragically no longer being here with us, as harsh as it is to say. THAT BEING SAID. this is the last bit of sophies true vision of her artistic future we will ever get. this is the LAST true SOPHIE album we will ever get. even if we magically wake up one day to a giant compilation album packed with fan favorites, its not a SOPHIE album. it feels extremely selfish for fans to act all, uhh, whats the word... the one that starts with a P... over this. we as fans are owed nothing, we were promised nothing, and (abby lee miller voice) WE DESERVE NOTHING. its totally fine to dislike the music itself, but is it really that hard for fans to at the very least RESPECT the album and what it means OUTSIDE the music?
@@msalicekeys I feel like the early stages of sophies career and her motherland works truly helped influence the existence of hyperpop, but you genuinely can’t listen to most of her songs and say it’s “hyperpop” (which is a term that honestly lost its meaning due to people thinking anything is hyperpop these days) like whole new world, or the entire non stop remix album. She did electronic music, which is different from what hyperpop is trying to be
YES I totally agree Sophie influenced 2010s hyperpop but I feel like hyperpop was always prevalent in pop music during 90s-2000s. I consider Robyn a hyperpop artist, ‘Konichiwa * ‘ is probably one of the best 90s hyperpop songs. Also La Roux’s 2009 ‘Bullet Proof’ too
It would be the album of the year if: 1) The tracklisting was a bit more cohesive and indicative of some over bearing theme for the album 2) If 'Love Me Off Earth ' didn't exist, cause what the hell is that song
It's nice for the fans (the normal, not the parasocial, extreme ones), who get more music from the artist... but unfortunately the quality of the final project isn't as good as much of what came before.
With my hand on my heart and my Sophie poster on the wall, I gotta ask why can't people be normal about it, or at least to think more neutrally about it and wait to see what we can take and have to discuss
Dude this is trippy. But shes real… “A Sophie album” like it’s a legendary and iconic piece of music history. One who’s status and genius can never be touched by another artists in our lifetime. …and she passed away?! I’m about to loook her music up.
Liked your summary of the reactions to the album. Agree with everything you said. Some people have a very gatekeeper mentality about Sophie and can’t accept that the finished product is not to their liking. The truth is music is subjective, if you don’t like it, just move on. There’s still plenty of SOPHIE music out there to listen to.
tbh, there was a certain element missing from the album to me. the whole thing felt half baked and maybe that's just how i feel as someone who also writes music. i wouldn't want unreleased songs to be heard without my explicit consent. and i think that's just where i stand with most post mortem stuff, it just feels like a cash grab from the label, disrespect to the artist, and bad music for fans. makes me cringe thinking there was a room full of people making decisions on her behalf 😅
I bought the vinyl and was very disappointed by it !!! I loved all Sophie’s previous music but this album just did not have the same magic as the previous material!!!! Don’t mean to upset anyone that’s just my truthful personal opinion!!!

After hearing the album a while ago and being sadly dissapointed, I stumbled upon this video, so please allow me to share some opinions Firstly, Her brother should've been way more upfront on what the album would be from the start, I like many people thought that this album was going to be Sophie's unreleased tracks, and this is coming from someone who got the news through spotify of all things and refused to use twitter OR interact with any type of stan online. So there definitely was some sort of misscommunication there that should've been dealt with. Secondly , I feel as though, it would've been better to just release the songs as is, even in their unfinished swan state, not because her brother is untalented or anything, the album was conceived as a collab since the start so I have no doubts that Sophie trusted his vision for it as well, but because simply put, he's not the same person as he used to be when he initially started making it. And before you cast judgement I implore you to read my reasoning. Sophie's death affected us all, and her family more than anyone of us will ever know, and grief changes a person to their core , and to kind of explain what I mean by this in metaphors, it'd be like an artist picking up an unfinished works after years of life and hardships going by, no matter how much they try to stick to their original vision, it's still not going to match what the finished work was going to originally be, because it's being made by two people with different worldviews, and as a result two different artists if that makes sense. -And thirdly, I've come to terms with the fact that this album was never going to reach the previous heights of Oils, Oils was a once in a generation truly perfect body of work that has inspired and will inspire more people in the future. Anything less than perfection was going to be disappointing. Plus the fact that this year in general has spoiled us with amazing music kinda made those expectations even more unrealistic. At least in the end, I hope more people get into her and discover how amazing she was. (Also to answer your question, I think she DID make hyperpop but due to the passage of time what is considered hyperpop now is not what it would've been thought of originally)
I love this album but my god are some of the song kinda trash, I’m so Sorry and I’m the biggest SOPHIE fan but Why Lies should never have been on this album, these vocals mixed with these lyrics are just.. ugh. I love the album that’s not it.
все еще самый импотентный и слабый альбом софи по звучанию. но альбом имеет больше символическую часть, а люди, которые упиваются слезам по невыпущенным трекам все еще могут их послушать на soundcloud
What a bizarre and untrue thing to say. No, not all posthumous albums are meant to bring comfort, many are planned an advance of an artists death, and if an artist had an album that was already done and intended to be released but hadn’t bc they died suddenly, that’s a unique situation in its own right, and lastly posthumous recordings can be published by all kinds of companies and peoples for money making or just even out of curiosity. Some artists want all their stuff released after death, some want it all destroyed. Don’t try and speak for everyone
people who wanted dubai, rubber, transnation, sunscreen, anything like that, on this album just didn’t do research. those are all older scrapped projects that were obviously not going to be on this album. and the way everyone is treating this album and being so cruel to the family about it is most likely going to prevent any further sophie posthumous works coming out. i know they said the last album but who knows if they would’ve dropped dubai and rubber and transnation on streaming as a treat if we had been a little more kind. also to top it off as a hardcore sophie stan this album is pure sophie in every way and people who don’t get it don’t get it and that’s on them. imma bump the album idc it’s great

no because heav3n suspended exists and sounds so good
I think it’s funny that fans think they know what ‘Sophie’ is more than like close friends/family/coworkers that literally knew her ..
For example i think the disappearance of Ayesha Erotica for years actually helped her become this now famous persona that everyone has heard about.
absolutely agree
i just dont like how people are attacking her brother when he must be feeling a lot of pain having to finish sophie's album. im just really impressed that he has the strength to finish it and put it out
Oooh that hyperpop opinion is a fun one, and one i’ve been struggling with.
Call venetian snares glitchcore again and I'm rocking your shi bro, he's breakcore
(Sophie played a lot of these tracks during her final live performances)
The emptiness of not having her image be front and centre of the promo material is actually a genius stroke in my mind.
(Let’s not forget she wasn’t ever a fan of sticking to the same tracks and replaying her greatest hits just because she could)
She jokingly told people to ‘fuck off’ when crowds asked for ‘Immaterial’ during some of her last performances!.
Plunging Asymptote was "finished" since she released it herself back in 2019
@@ringa_ringa_ling That's fascinating. I assumed it wasn't finished because it's so fucking repetitive
@@sleepdealer10a lot of people are running wild with their imaginations and expectations of what they think SOPHIEs music is supposed to be instead of just enjoying it as she saw it and intended in all its sonic diversity
@@thelevelbeyondhuman This is probably true
imo “shouldn’t they have released songs popular with fans?” NO because we are not the artist we are the listener. whether you like the album or not, this was Sophies vision. at first i was disappointed, and then i listened again without my preconceived notions and after watching the interview and hearing about the album’s creation i began to appreciate it more. also im literally obsessed, currently Do You Wanna Be Alive is my fav.
thank you for doing this video 🙏🙏🙏
Parasocial relationships kicks everybody and their logic’s behinds.
exactly!! these comments are showing everyone needs to go touch grass
there is something weirdly upsetting about the comment section, like grief could only be complete if we get the genres right. this mattered so much to people and they own so much of her still
I just hope that we get a deluxe version where most of the fan favourites are released as I understand that this album had a clear vision that should best be left untouched, but I still want those tracks goddammit.
I feel like it would be more cash grabby to release those tracks, considering SOPHIE herself didn't seem to want to release them
@@ar-yj8lb yeah that's why I think that if you release them, you should do it now with. deluxe that's not on vinyl to really show that its just an extra with no interest to make money.
THAT BEING SAID. this is the last bit of sophies true vision of her artistic future we will ever get. this is the LAST true SOPHIE album we will ever get. even if we magically wake up one day to a giant compilation album packed with fan favorites, its not a SOPHIE album. it feels extremely selfish for fans to act all, uhh, whats the word... the one that starts with a P... over this. we as fans are owed nothing, we were promised nothing, and (abby lee miller voice) WE DESERVE NOTHING. its totally fine to dislike the music itself, but is it really that hard for fans to at the very least RESPECT the album and what it means OUTSIDE the music?
i agree with everything on this video especially Sophie not being an hyperpop artist
if Hey QT isnt hyperpop then I don't know what you could argue is over it.
@@msalicekeys Bubblegum Bass
@@Meltingm0ment you literally cannot search bubblegum bass without Sophie and Hyperpop in the videos that appear
idk there just comes a point where splitting and hard defining genres gets too online to serve a point or purpose other than arguing
Also La Roux’s 2009 ‘Bullet Proof’ too
gosh i wonder what that word could be!!! girl, this is so confusing💔
my prayers have been answered
It would be the album of the year if:
1) The tracklisting was a bit more cohesive and indicative of some over bearing theme for the album
2) If 'Love Me Off Earth ' didn't exist, cause what the hell is that song
CHAT what's the word
!
!
Its ped0phi1e i think
parasocial
It's nice for the fans (the normal, not the parasocial, extreme ones), who get more music from the artist... but unfortunately the quality of the final project isn't as good as much of what came before.
With my hand on my heart and my Sophie poster on the wall, I gotta ask why can't people be normal about it, or at least to think more neutrally about it and wait to see what we can take and have to discuss
14:04 i couldnt get through the remainder of the video with a straight face bc of Awkwafina: WHAT THE CHILE
shoutout to kelela shady facts one of my fav moots
Dude this is trippy. Iv never heard of this woman and watching this video with all mythology it’s like I’m watching a new scripted streaming series about the down fall of a fictional pop star that was created obviously for the the show. But shes real…
“A Sophie album” like it’s a legendary and iconic piece of music history. One who’s status and genius can never be touched by another artists in our lifetime. …and she passed away?! I’m about to loook her music up.
Shout out to you for that Fiona Apple comment 😩👌🏾✨
Do a video on Sophie’s scrapped contribution to chromatica and how you think the album faired without her😂😂
I wanna know the word 😅
I bought the vinyl and was very disappointed by it !!! I loved all Sophie’s previous music but this album just did not have the same magic as the previous material!!!! Don’t mean to upset anyone that’s just my truthful personal opinion!!!

i would like it if it was announced just an unreleased and outtakes album, Sophie would never release this mess
After hearing the album a while ago and being sadly dissapointed, I stumbled upon this video, so please allow me to share some opinions
Firstly, Her brother should've been way more upfront on what the album would be from the start, I like many people thought that this album was going to be Sophie's unreleased tracks, and this is coming from someone who got the news through spotify of all things and refused to use twitter OR interact with any type of stan online.
I’ll stick to listening to SOPHIE’s music on SoundCloud/Google drives for the demos/live versions 😅
Posthumous albums are a weird concept to me. I don't believe they should exist. Gets shivers down my spine.
I love this album but my god are some of the song kinda trash, I’m so Sorry and I’m the biggest SOPHIE fan but Why Lies should never have been on this album, these vocals mixed with these lyrics are just.. ugh. I love the album that’s not it.
все еще самый импотентный и слабый альбом софи по звучанию. но альбом имеет больше символическую часть, а люди, которые упиваются слезам по невыпущенным трекам все еще могут их послушать на soundcloud
posthumous albums arent actual albums to critique, their albums made to bring comfort. have respect for the dead holy shit.
It was bad... Thats it shoulnt have been released
people who wanted dubai, rubber, transnation, sunscreen, anything like that, on this album just didn’t do research. those are all older scrapped projects that were obviously not going to be on this album. and the way everyone is treating this album and being so cruel to the family about it is most likely going to prevent any further sophie posthumous works coming out. i know they said the last album but who knows if they would’ve dropped dubai and rubber and transnation on streaming as a treat if we had been a little more kind. also to top it off as a hardcore sophie stan this album is pure sophie in every way and people who don’t get it don’t get it and that’s on them. imma bump the album idc it’s great
