Something I love when English cover artists do is when they write the translyrics to have the same kind of sounds as in the Japanese version. Like how 'dare da' and 'shut it up' end in the same kind of 'a' sound. The incredible translyrics from usually either Bread Box or Sayri combined with Will's musicianship and how he approaches the harmonies, mixing and layering of his vocals make these covers truly special and are everything translated songs should be - faithful to the original but with flair to make it their own.
my problem is that this cover misses a lot of the actual meaning of the original song because it takes so many liberties with its translation like it's not a heart, embark, a beautiful star it should be hard work, future, a beautiful star one sounds like denji seeking for romance while the more correct translation is more about denji seeking a brighter future through the effort he puts into life
@@nothappening5510 I think it's important to think of it from the perspective of the whole song rather than approaching it line-by-line. Not being focused on being line to line accurate is a crucial part of being able to convey feeling and meaning through the translated lyrics, and it is an advantage that a production like Will's can abuse because there is nothing it has to match in real time. For example, when subtitling an anime, the intonation, line length and pace have to be matched line to line because you can hear the voice acting at the same time and if you can't match their energy, it reads awkwardly and becomes a disjointed experience for the viewer. This is why you can't simply copy a translated script for your English dub - the script is intended to be read alongside the visuals and was never meant to stand by itself. Translyrics for a cover like this *have* to be able to stand by themselves or they cannot be felt. And in order to do that, sometimes you have to prioritise the lyrics part over the translation part. So instead of saying its wrong, let's approach this line as a lyric rather than as a sentence and try and figure out what Bread Box was attempting to do. There is more to a lyric than its literal meaning as a word, and I think that's what's been prioritsed here. The flow of the word heart into embark is here to match the flow of doryoku into mirai from the original. The way Kenshi Yonezu omits the "u" sound at the end of doryoku and sort of slurs his way through mirai are what make these two words flow together. If pronounced properly, they sound... odd. It's this flow that makes the original catchy - and a hook that's repeated over 20 times in a song has to be catchy. So what we've translated here is not meaning, it's the flow. We are writing lyrics at the end of the day, not a script. These have to be sung and it has to be a good song. To bring this back to the start of my point, has anything been lost in the meaning of the song's lyrics by approaching the hook in this way? I'd argue absolutely not. To Denji, being able to claim Makima's heart would in itself be because of effort and doryoku in his pursuit. One of his biggest motivations is romance... albeit his own strange definition of it. Do you still feel this from the rest of the song? Has the meaning of the song really been changed or lost due to this one line? And if we haven't lost the meaning of the complete song and we've conveyed it in English, doesn't that make this a successful translation? And if we have a banging hook that gets in your head and words that can be sung in a way that naturally matches the composition, haven't we succeeded at making a good set of lyrics? It doesn't have to match line-to-line to achieve either of these things. Sorry for the rant, I just want to get across that translation does not have to be literal to be good. “All I want is a better life” I love this translation! This line was originally just “I want to be happy” in Japan. And I’m really happy to hear you sing this song😊
@Spectrum It may be a reference to the common phrase, "embark for a brand new start." You could even argue the "embark, beautiful star" is meant to be a play on words, as it can be misheard as "embark the beautiful start." So the chorus does keep the original meaning of “future,” but with different phrasing.
Oh my god, “if paradise only takes the good and the brave I’m starving anyway” is such a raw line. It PERFECTLY represents Denjis character. Its utterly amazing, the whole thing.
Really impressive vocals and translation (yes ik Will didn’t translate this himself smh). The nuances in the original Japanese lyrics are impossible to translate over to English, (*) so the translation seems to put the focus on sounds, but anyway this sounds really satisfying, especially with Will’s aggressive singing voice. Examples for (*): 「この手に掴みたい あなたのその胸の中」can mean both “I want to reach your heart” and “I want to touch your boobs”, the second meaning referring to Denji’s wishes at the start of CSM. However, unlike in Japanese, in English there’s not a catch-it-all expression for this, and as we can see , here the translation chose “heart” over “boobs”. 「444 3で外れる炭酸水」is a reference to how vendor machines in Japan often works: whenever one purchases a drink, the machine will go into a game of lottery, and if 4 identical numbers appear on the screen you get another free drink of the same sort. So 4444 is an extra free drink, but 4443 as in the lyrics means you’re out of luck this time. In the translation, it seems no reference was made to this culture/practice, and it even added extra info “count up to three”. Finally I should clarify again, the purpose is not to criticize the translator, they did an incredible work, but there’s just too much information packed in the lyrics of Kick Back in its original form that when it is translated, a considerable amount of give and take is inevitable. With the above examples I intend to shed light upon this fact.
Yeah, these lyrics seem based on a very poor translation. And the second line you mentioned should be more like _"776... Another opportunity lost"._ Just one short of a jackpot.
Not gonna lie, usually I found covers in english to be a bit uncanny when I listen to them, but this one sounds really good, feels natural and the english lyrics fits perfectly with the instrumentals and vibe of the song, and yeah this is as replayable as the original for sure
if you like this you should definitely listen to some of his other covers! he always makes them very natural and catchy like this one, plus his voice is crazy
2:38 I don't know about anyone else, but this part stills gives me chills since day one, the way he's voice is so soothing and able to stretch it out is just so amazing
I love that part too. It's got such a sickly sweet vibe, like the best parts of the entire emo genre distilled into a single verse I wish I knew what song it reminds me of
@@willstetson I agree, I have a question about one line tho. I anticipated, "Konichiwa Baby" to be "Hello to you, Baby" since it makes more sense and a closer transition. But it's, "now what are you seeing" I want to know the reasoning for choosing one over the other...
I like this, not only because it's a banger, but the translation from Japanese to English is DIFFERENT to the cover's lyrics. BUT THAT'S WHAT I LIKE! He changed the lyrics, and they mean the exact same thing, but just mean he doesn't have to say lines quicker than he should, its incredible. Stay a king, Will Stetson. This is the first time I've reached over 10 likes. Thank you all, peeps.
@@Anna-pe7uk basically, a non-sequitur. If I understood right... Denji is a chaotic stupid good character. He barely passes off as Good or Brave, he's just there to serve his own selfish ideas, thus he only cares about a physical hunger rather a hunger for something greater.
@woweman I don't exactly get what relevance what you're saying has to the line itself, some parts at least. But I think I am beginning to draw my own lines here, thanks to your explanation. "If paradise takes the good and the brave," if this relates to the perfect world Makima wants to create, then, "I'm starving anyway," relates to Denji admitting that he has no place in that world, because he's starving; as in he has selfish desires. And at the same time, it's an excuse as to why Denji decides to eat Makima and keep the world as it is; where can pursue what is greater, although it will never be as much as this 'paradise'.
this doesnt exactly translate the lyrics but is absolutely a worthy sacrifice *for a version that rhymes and fits the melody* it still includes half the same words and still has the same theme, making it even better than a direct translation
Direct translations are generally pretty wonky (as a Swede I'd know)-- so yeah it was definetly the right call to slightly adjust the lyrics in a way that it would still fit the music + overall theme of the song
This translation is really wonderful because it focuses on the emotional aspect of the original song and people who listen to it will likely never realize that the original had very subtle, unapologetic, sexual tones to reflect the tone of the show itself. "Happy" and "Lucky" often referring subtly to sexual indulgence and the original lyrics switching between yearning for true fulfillment and settling for indulgent pleasure. Most of the analogies like "paradise" and "heaven" in the original song are intentionally perverted but in english translations like this, that's not only complicated but far more difficult to keep subtle. In a way, it's actually really nice to have a cover of this song that's so pure in it's emotion, too. I respect Will for playing this piece for us, and to whoever managed to translate and bring this work to us in the first place.
After reading the manga and hearing this dub, I finally see why everyone was so happy with this song when the CSM anime was released. It really does match the story. Holy cow.
@erick ramirez Binged the Manga in 2 days. The roller coaster of emotion legit had me reeling. Going from sad, angry, and then witnessing sheer comedy had me feeling like I was going Mad. Hearing the lyrics... Yeah. Of course it'd have food related things.
Love the cover. I love how despite the fact that Denji was never taught to tame his more primitive desires, he's still a simple guy at heart. He's happy to have a roof over his head and food to eat. That's what makes me like him as a character despite being his polar opposite in personality and values.
His desire, inherently, is not perverted. It is bases of curiosity and extreme wants to fulfill it. Remember when he DID think he touch Power's boobs, he pauses and got clueless. In the end, he's 16, he didn't actually know what he wanted and what he actually needed. In him, is a deeply troubled young man who grew up under the terror of heartless yakuza men and only accompanied by a dog that is a demon. He's wild and sometimes out of line, but you can't see actual malice from him. Even when his own supposed teammates wanted to kill him, he didn't go on rampage for revenge. He's not conventionally pure, but he's pure in a twisted way. If anyone watched and disliked ANY side of him, that could only mean they're illiterate and can't capture his essence of character.
@@arthurmorganSUN That's exactly what I like about Denji. I've hated perverted anime characters in the past, it's why I can't sit through Highschool DxD, but Denji is different. The poor guy has had a horrible life and all of his current wants and selfishness are pretty dang justified. He didn't have a chance to date, he didn't have a chance to have fun, he didn't even have a chance to have bread with jam for God's sake! It makes total sense he'd be trying to live out all the fantasies he couldn't before.
“So bury me in pleasure. Rest in peace, we fall together.” That is one of the best lines I’ve ever heard, and you captured it PERFECTLY. Your own twist to the song made it sound much better than what others could have done with that line
Although you might know, it's not yo yo yo in original, but yon yon yon san (4443), which is a reference for Japanese soda vending machines. Some have a little roulette game, where if you get 4 of the same numbers, you get a free soda. In this context, Denji missed free soda by one digit. This line connects with the lyrics with pronunciation pun.
I really love this song because it just perfectly represents Denji; even in the original version, it feels like a song about a man who's never had any form of happiness in his entire life and has gone insane perusing lust and pleasure that never lasts, or sometimes even bores him.
2:20- “If paradse only takes the good and the brave, I’m starving anyway” was a perfect translation of the meaning/sentiment the og lyrics we’re trying to say- if it had been directly translated, I think the line would’ve lost that meaning! many other eng covers of kick back are voiced by deep voices, but honestly your cover is in my opinion the best with a light voice because i can hear more emotions and it rly sounds similar to the original cover what a joy to hear your covers Will stetson.
Maybe it's because I've never listened to him that much, but it's also with this cover that I realized that Kenshi managed to make KICK BACK sound like he combined the chaotic and headbanging sounds of songs like Panda Hero and Matryoshka with his more solemn and digestible songwriting that I more remember him for. And now I wanna listen to his stuff more to see for myself how well he worked up that mix over the years. Thanks very much for your and your buddies' work, then, Will! :"D

The nuances in the original Japanese lyrics are impossible to translate over to English, (*) so the translation seems to put the focus on sounds, but anyway this sounds really satisfying, especially with Will’s aggressive singing voice.
Examples for (*):
「この手に掴みたい あなたのその胸の中」can mean both “I want to reach your heart” and “I want to touch your boobs”, the second meaning referring to Denji’s wishes at the start of CSM.
The heart line also relates to Makima, as she has an obsession with the original Chainsaw Man/Pochita, who is now Denji’s heart.
Yeah, these lyrics seem based on a very poor translation. And the second line you mentioned should be more like _"776... Another opportunity lost"._ Just one short of a jackpot.
"I'd like to make mine what's in the hollow of your breasts" would be a better translation I believe

im just saying, "if our paradise only takes the good and the brave im starving anyway" is a HELL of a line
Can you explain what it means?
@@Anna-pe7uk basically, a non-sequitur. If I understood right... Denji is a chaotic stupid good character. He barely passes off as Good or Brave, he's just there to serve his own selfish ideas, thus he only cares about a physical hunger rather a hunger for something greater.
@@thegrandtemslayr1384 Really comprehensive answer, thanks.
@woweman so in way, Denji's selfishness and his behavior, are a hunger that reaches for something beyond heaven?
@woweman I don't exactly get what relevance what you're saying has to the line itself, some parts at least. But I think I am beginning to draw my own lines here, thanks to your explanation. "If paradise takes the good and the brave," if this relates to the perfect world Makima wants to create, then, "I'm starving anyway," relates to Denji admitting that he has no place in that world, because he's starving; as in he has selfish desires. And at the same time, it's an excuse as to why Denji decides to eat Makima and keep the world as it is; where can pursue what is greater, although it will never be as much as this 'paradise'.

this doesnt exactly translate the lyrics but is absolutely a worthy sacrifice *for a version that rhymes and fits the melody*
it still includes half the same words and still has the same theme, making it even better than a direct translation
Exactly!
Direct translations are generally pretty wonky (as a Swede I'd know)-- so yeah it was definetly the right call to slightly adjust the lyrics in a way that it would still fit the music + overall theme of the song
@@niffry you forgot probably the bigfest thingthe rythm.
I mean that's what most English Cover is? They gotta make it rhythm of course
I mean you can’t rhyme without changing the lyrics

Some have a little roulette game, where if you get 4 of the same numbers, you get a free soda. In this context, Denji missed free soda by one digit. This line connects with the lyrics with pronunciation pun.
