  • Removing a cross bar that holds the rotary cutter blades off the vertical spindle or bottom gear shaft. This is a Woods M5 Dixie Cutter rotary cutter (Brush hog, Bush hog, Brush cutter, etc). This particular model had a cross bar that is pressed onto to the vertical shaft coming out of the bottom of the gear box, and you have to get creative to remove it.
I noticed the replacement cross bars now have a split design on the top of the bar that has bolts to clamp it onto the vertical shaft so the bar itself is no longer pressed on.
    Tools used:
4" steel square tubing that was a cutoff section of a commercial light pole that you would find in a parking lot.
Harbor Freight 12 ton bottle Jack

    Harbor Freight log chain

Deep well impact socket that is just slightly smaller than the shaft size, so it doesn't get pressed into the cross bar and get stuck.

Thanks. Been looking everywhere to find how this style comes apart. Think I may just go with the pack the box with grease method after seeing this. Lol.

Having to remove our bar to rebuild box now, best idea I've seen. Going to try this, I knew it would be a pain. Thanks

I have the same problem with a older New Holland cutter. Thanks for the idea, I'll give this a try!

Dude! You saved me. Was trying to figure out how to get mine off without the "special tool" called for in the operator's manual on mine and this was the ticket.

I should add that I have an MD160. Same type of cross bar and design. Also, I almost gave up on this method. I had the jack cranked as far as I could get it before I heard the first crack and sign that it was letting loose. I was using a 12 ton jack as well and a short chunk of rail road track but no heat as I was trying to preserve my shaft seal. I suspected the seal was bad but wanted to inspect it first. This saved me a bunch of money. Local repair shop estimated 6 hours to remove the cross bar, inspect/replace the seal, and replace the blades. I did all of that in less than three with this method and that included wire wheeling all the parts before reassembly and using plenty of anti-seize.
If I had to do it over again, I would use a 20 ton jack and an even bigger chain just to be sure.
      Thanks again for the tip!

Glad I could save you some time and money. I've been saved a lot of headaches and money by learning from others on here, so I figured I would give back a little, and someone could glean something from all my troubles... Lol

Anti-sieze is your friend. If you would check oil level in gearbox prior to use,you would have seen your seal was bad.

No, I bought an old 1945 Farmall H that came with this brush hog. Funny thing is I bought another identical used M5 for parts, and they were twins, no stump jumper on it either. I probably should add one as much crap as I end up running over. We bought an old 20 acre farm that has all kinds of surprises I keep finding the hard way when I mow... Lol

The bottle jack & chain to me is the easiest
I looked and searched all over the internet on how to remove my stump jumper from my 21 year old bush hog. I even called the manufacturer in Ozark , Alabama and they just said apply heat and wood wedges which didnt work
Finally a good friend that has his own welding shop told me about the bottle jack and chain. It popped off relatively easy but I sure thought the chain would break first.
Your video is the first one I have encountered. Thanks for sharing it. It will help many folks from now on!!!
