Covid: How it all went wrong | James O'Brien vs The Government

  • James O'Brien runs through the timeline of events during the coronavirus pandemic and how the government responded. His new book, How Not To Be Wrong, is available to buy here: amzn.to/37437Bg
In this deeply personal book, James turns the mirror on himself to reveal what he has changed his mind about and why, and explore how examining and changing our own views is our new civic duty in a world of outrage, disagreement and echo chambers. He writes candidly about the stiff upper lip attitudes and toxic masculinity that coloured his childhood, and the therapy and personal growth that have led him to question his assumptions and explore new perspectives. Laying open his personal views on everything from racial prejudice to emotional vulnerability, from fat-shaming to tattoos, he then delves into the real reasons - often irrational or unconscious - he holds them.

James O'Brien is the best presenter on radio. He misses nothing and says it like it is. Honesty is valued even more these days after years and years of political and press - lying to such an extent it's almost acceptable for politicians and hangers on to bare faced lie on television, newspapers and social media without a hint of apology. Well done James - I know the trolls don't bother you - they are in denial.

Selling out isn't the problem it's the complete lack of honour and morality shown by today's politicians all around the world . In the past there would be instant resignations when scandal or rule breaking was highlighted . Now reporting is just dismissed as fake news , Johnson and Trump would both now be out of office if today's standards were comparable to those in the past . It's the blatant lying , the hypocrisy , rule and law breaking all done with impunity that leaves us being governed by these dishonest , profiteering attention seeking clowns . I have never seen western governments so morally bankrupt as those ruling the UK and America .

I think although there is factual analysis in what James said, there is a fair point to acknowledge there is that often the companies bosses, political leaders and other leaders have been, scientifically, proven to be leaning towards narcissism. In fact, narcissism is a trait that helps leaders to have a high level of self confidence necessary to be a good leader. However, the most important characteristic in a leader is not his ability of being narcissist but his capacity EMPATHY. #Thatswhatsmissing.

To believe that ppl were flocking to the beach in Bournemouth because they saw Dominic Cummings get away with his violation, instead of course that it was hot as hell and ppl had developed extreme cabin fever from months of being cooped up in their houses is utter balls! Yes the British Government has managed to save neither lives nor the economy because of their incompetence but far too many ppl pretend not to understand that once the virus had become endemic there was little that could have been done. Had the government locked down hard before the virus numbers began to warrant it they would have been accused of overreacting and once the virus took off it was too widespread for lockdowns to prevent mass casualties already baked into the spread. But this is what you get when you elect weak leaders that attempt to govern by sticking their finger in the wind to tell which way the public opinion is blowing rather than with commitment to principles, ideas and conviction. If they’d had the balls to stay the course with constant advisories and less draconian restrictions at least they’d have experienced the economic and social benefits and would have had something to show for their efforts, a la Sweden. In the end they got just as much death (more per capita than Sweden even) but racked up huge public debt, destroyed jobs, likely caused many deaths from disruptions to medical services and universal condemnation on the left and the right of their handling of the crisis. Well done Boris you managed to get the worse of both worlds!

I've booked a flight from Canada back to the UK for Christmas. I have no idea, at time of writing, whether I'll be allowed to come back or what restrictions will be in place. This government has been tested with a new virus like every other government across the world and I did genuinely have some sympathy for them. However, the incompetence and the arrogance of the Tory front bench has withered that sympathy to anger and disgust. If I'm allowed to fly will I have to quarantine? If so, for how long and where?
I'm hoping my Christmas dinner will be with my recently widowed Mum or it might be a chesse and pickle sandwich from WH Smith at Heathrow. I don't know and neither, crucially, do the government. I don't want sackings or resignations, I want them to do the job they were elected for which is - amongst other things - to show strong leadership. Let's face it, they've NEVER got to grips with this pandemic and it's about time they did.
