I’ve used the Eagle Creek folders for about 10 years and can’t travel without them. It’s amazing space saving they are. I went to Hawaii for a week to a meeting in only carry on. I had a different outfit( top, slacks, jacket) for each day as well as sightseeing/beach clothes. I had way more than I needed but the compression is amazing. I only started using packing cubes and rolling clothes in the past year - also amazing. It’s lucky I haven’t had my carry on roller bag weighed because it would probably be over the weight limit for checked baggage. Your tip for liquids on cotton pads is great. Thanks for sharing what worked and what didn’t!

I liked the video a lot Marni. Thanks very much for the packing/luggage/tote tips ... and bloopers. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I ‘rinse & repeat’, there’s always something I regret (like not bringing the cardigan). Such is life!

YESsssss!! I'm a packing cubes convert 😍😍😍 also they saved me for a recent trip when my bag got destroyed in checked luggage (the entire back of my luggage was ripped open)-- so basically anything that wasn't in a packing cube was completely lost 😲 (so yeah my $40 tweezerman set was lost to the ether 🙄😥)

Great travel tips Marnie!!! I fly a lot (because we cruise a lot) and your advice is spot on!!! The last trip earlier this month I passed a tearful TSA prechecked young woman who had decided she didn't need to follow the liquid allowance rules. She was stuck getting a full on exam with the friendly but firm TSA agent AND tossing her expensive pile of liquid products. Body wash, lotion and perfume were obvious to see but what was especially puzzling was that she didn't even have a quart size bag to put her less than 100ml products. I'm sure he supplied her with one but she risked losing her flight and possibly her TSA pre check status all for some stuff that clearly could have gone into smaller containers. Speaking of that, Sephora sells these lovely little refillable perfume bottles by a brand called Travalo that you can put your favourite into & toss into the TSA liquid bag. Size of a mini lipstick! Love them. I bought several a year ago & adore them. Great for the purse too.

My old Samsonite luggage I got before college was the hard side clam shell style. I always felt like I could pack so much more in those bags, but they were heavy. Now that they have new materials that they didn’t have back in the 70’s, I may try one for my carry on roller bag. Good travel video.

Thank you for the travel tips update and experience with the items. Always good to hear tips and about the latest products for travel. I have found any brand hard sided luggage with multi directional wheels is beneficial. Have spent $$$ and $ - besides the cool gimmicks they function the same. Any brand set of packing cubes are surprisingly helpful. For carryon I use a bag with back pack and handle feature. Much easier to get through airport and less stress on one shoulder/back . I currently have the Terrida luxury travel bag in leather. I am sure there are other brands that work as well. Happy trails!

I only used the envelope thing that time. It’s super easy-just fold up your clothes, stack them up, and put them inside. It smashes them into a smaller footprint and protects them at the same time!

Away, I have the carry-on and the medium suitcase. My husband has the carry-on and the large suitcase. I went to Jamaica, wet swimsuits, and dirty clothes - that bag inside the suitcase is amazing! Nothing else got wet or smelly (my husband really sweats in the humidity). You are right, you can over pack. But, we only went over by a pound on the way back, because of Rum (LOL). I think the packing cubes are a great idea. MARNIE! Amazing idea for skin care liquids - that was an aha moment for me. THANK YOU! We all need to share tips on travel.

I have been using packing cubes for the last year and loved them. I bought Lewis and Clark compression packing cubes on Amazon and use different cubes for different clothing. - one for pjs, socks, lingerie, another for tops and sweaters, another for shorts, pants, joggers, etc. you get the idea. Because I can compress the cubes, I can fix a lot in each. When I get to the hotel, I do not even have to remove them from the cubes - just put it in the drawers and open the cube.

Marnie, have no shame about your tote! It’s adorable...I would order it the exact same way if I were to purchase one! As far as “the notebook,” I love the Fringe brand at TJ Maxx. They are heavier and bigger, but the cover is basically indestructible if you are pulling it in and out of a tote. Can’t wait to have you back in Charleston next Fall, and we can plan a great meet up in a cute location!

Great tips Marnie! I travel all the time for work and had not thought of soaking the squares before. I couldn't tell for sure but it looked like you were carrying a full size foundation. I use the little sample bottles that Lancome and Este Lauder give you. One of those holds enough for a week. They say 10 days which I can do, but it would depend on how much product you use. You can always test this at home before you go on a trip.

The hubs and I have converted to the hard-side luggage..... it is so much easier to pack AND to roll. They almost roll by themselves, which is WONDERFUL when traveling and making multiple stops! The brand we have is Delsey and of course I have them in blue.... We started out with a carry-on size and a LARGE one, and then this year I purchased the mid-size one for all round travel. I personally swear by packing cubes and love how you can organize your clothes in the suitcase that way. I really loved this video and appreciate you letting us know how it went on your trip and always love your critiques of things.... Have a great week!

Sincerely, Interesting review on your suitcase...Iast fall, i purchased my first hard case suitcase... it was a super cute, cream & tan Bric carry suitcase. On my first use (a round trip from Cali to Paris) it got so battered! The actual corners were crushed inward (inverted corners). I wonder how your bag will do on long flights. I realize now I should have only used it on short flights or when I fly private on my friends jet. I will try the Eagle packing cubes!

  • @diannewi

Very thoughtful and informative review on the Away bag. I totally agree, why would anyone want a white suitcase? Um, maybe if you always "fly private" or travel by car? I hope you can clean your bag, maybe try some Bartenders Friend or baking soda to scrub the exterior? If all else fails, contact Away as they have a great guarantee and might be willing to replace the bag for a darker color. I think their navy is very practical and elegant. They recently did a collab with Karlie Kloss and had a medium purple color, I should've bought that as now they appear to be sold out in that color.
The Eagle Creek packing folders like the one you use are great, especially for men's shirts, tees, and even pants. For myself I have a ton of both EC and eBags brands packing cubes. This past year I discovered the EC Specter Tech compression cubes and they are absolutely THE best. They come in a set of Small and Medium together, I have 5 sets of those and additional XS and other non-compression ones, also one tube cube for scarves. I can travel for 2 months in chilly weather with a carry-on only using those specific cubes. I also use the Specter quarter cubes for toiletries and makeup, they hold a lot and weigh next to nothing. Wait for sale pricing (I buy mine at 30% off) as the Specter Tech are a little expensive, but worth it for how many items you can fit inside them.
You featured a Baggallini travel purse a while back, that company makes great totes for travel and many of those have a double-zip pocket that can slide on an extended roller/spinner handle. I know you prefer designer totes but Baggallinis are extremely practical and often are on sale at really great pricing.
    Very good video.

Kiawah Island is big money. Very private. Come to The Market, T4add Street, King St. Do an historical Carriage tour while in Downtown Historic Charleston. Come in September or October or your coming to roast with the humidity on top of the heat. Also, try to get to Savannah, Ga while in the area if you haven't before. It's wonderful too. While in Charleston, go to Patriots Point, Mt. Pleasant, and Isle of Palms. You will love all of it. And Savannah, go to River Street and then Tybee Island .

A couple of other things that help me using carryon only. Sephora again: the mini of Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo in a shaker bottle. Because it isn't a spray can, it doesn't need to take room in the liquid allowance bag. I got a few of those sample jars that MAC or Clinique will give you sample foundation in. The Estée counter gives a sad little bottle that won't work. I'm talking the smaller single versions of contact lens cases (& those work too in a pinch but the sample jars are better). You can use them for eye cream, night cream, foundation etc. I put some scotch tape on the lids and use some abbreviations that I understand to write on, then cover with more tape because otherwise the writing can smear. I use All About Eyes in regular & rich versions for example and I want both! So one says AAE and the other AAER. 2 of them filled with foundation will last 2 weeks. My tiny squeeze tube of Effacernes concealer I don't bother but I am going to decant my prolong wear by MAC into one for the next trip. Sephora has excellent little trial sizes for hair stuff. I'm fond of Living Proof & Alterna as well as the Moroccan Oil which I saw in your TSA liquid bag. Hair & skin care is essential for me. Traveling puts stress on the skin & makes for some unique hair situations to put it mildly. I don't compromise but I do downsize. LauriePOP's channel has great ideas on travel & I learnt from her to put my larger tubes & bottles SIDEWAYS in the TSA bag. You can get more in that way. As another person commented I also use up any room in my husbands TSA bag as well. I always take a cashmere scarf that is on the big side, doubles as a shawl. I wear it into the plane. It's my blanket in the air & at destination. A tiny folding umbrella (I have one 6 inches long folded) always comes with me. Just checked--yup 6". And because we have to use smaller commuter jets a lot, I put my fragile stuff, dh's iPad & liquid allowances into my Longchamps tote purse ahead of time. (A small x body purse gets packed). He puts our Rx meds in his CPAP case which always goes on board with us. Asthmatics and diabetics need to remember this especially. I'm asthmatic and with the number of "assistance" animals including cats that the airlines allow I have to be prepared.

I went to see the Away small carry-on in the NYC store on Lafayette St (not far from the Glossier showroom!) and I loved it. The pink one is on my Christmas list but now I'm considering a darker color. I usually can get 5 days in a carry-on so it's worth it for me. Great video!

I have the pink set, yes it’s really cute - my husband has the dark maroon . . . Pro’s and cons for both. The light color does show the dark scuffs (magic eraser works well) but, not so much on the dark. The scratches on the dark show more than on the light. It’s a pick your poison kinda deal. I got all the dark scuff marks off my light pink. Remember, you do have control over what happens with your carry on. That little sucker holds a LOT! The wheels are great also. It’s a tough choice - go with what you want.

I have two Away suitcases, "The Medium" (the smaller of the two check-on sizes) and "The Bigger Carry-On". I recently went on a two-week work trip to Europe. All I brought were The Medium suitcase as my check-on and a regular-size Herschel backpack as my carryon-and I'm an over-packer. I ended up bringing clothes I didn't even wear. This is my first hard-side luggage and, as Marnie said, you can fit so much more into them than soft nylon luggage. The Medium did great through international airports, on multiple flights, in cabs and trains, over cobblestone streets, etc. I agree with Marnie that you probably don't need the Away brand specifically, but I'm a big fan. Oh and all of the Away suitcases nest together, which makes storage easy. And yes, huge fan of packing cubes too!

I too have the medium, and the carry on. Thanks for your comments on their durability. I got caught in the “over” packing, could not believe how much you can fit into them. 😂

Great tips! Love the soaked pads idea. But a few little extras (snacks, note pads) at the conference would have been nice!! Hello conference planners!! It’s so hard to plan for dressing in Charleston in the summer. Headed there in Sept for meetings at College of Charleston and it’s still SO HOT! Also, thanks for the detailed review on Away. My son interviewed with Away bags several years ago when they were a start up and they were so rude to him, I refuse to buy it! Too bad for them, he’s on his way to being a successful entrepreneur 😉 and he lives in Charleston! Of course this is one of my favorite videos because I love travel and packing tips and we go to Charleston often.

Charleston is one of the greatest places on earth! We were lucky enough to live an hour up the shore for several years, and we still go to Kiawah for a week every summer (heading there a week from today!). I don’t know why, but I am fascinated by packing videos!🤣 thanks for another great video!

We are traveling soon for 11 days with just a carry on and at first it gave me anxiety lol. I put travel sizes of my favs in my sephora cart and the price was astronomically a waste, so I purchased different travel containers and will take my own products at a fraction of the cost. And yes, the largest tote allowed for a personal item is the best tip. One of our flights from Paris to Rome will be smaller so they will check our carry on suitcases
    Great tips, thx for sharing

The travel sizes are way overpriced for what they are. Much better to decant into small containers. Have fun on your trip!

I love packing cubes because they make organization so easy and I live right out of them at my destination. I don't have an away bag (mostly because of the cost) but I do use a hard sided suitcase. I have a large one and a carry on size, but mostly use carry on size luggage because I have found that the checked bag size is too heavy for me to even yank off the luggage carousel. I am hoping to add Charleston on to the end of a trip to Myrtle Beach in October.

I have both the Away carry on, and the Away Large. I should've known I wouldn't use the carry on (much and don't see myself reaching for it at all in the future), but I think I was just drawn to the battery and it was such an interesting and creative idea. I decided to get the largest size they make because it came in the most beautiful shade of pink and I would use it the most. I've travelled with my large Away bag, from Canada to the US, and domestically in the US for a week, and I have never paid overages, or had my bag go over. I have a tote bag, I put my laptop in, and carry it with me in the airport and on planes so the heaviest thing I put in my actual suitcase are probably shoes and or my makeup/skincare bag. I am a stickler for when my Away suitcase comes out on the other side with scratches and dirt marks, but I always clean it with my magic eraser whenever I get to wherever I'm going, but because it's pink, I can recognize it instantly at baggage claim.
I'm travelling from West to East Coast in a week, and we have (annoyingly) 2 stops. I am very lucky that most of my travel, I can fly direct from Toronto to wherever. This time, I am slightly worried about the 50 minute layover, but because our baggage will be checked, and San Fransisco is not our final destination, I'm not too worried. Wish I could've given you my (deluxe sample of) SK II Essence I got from a Sephora point perk!

They’re the same size, a TINY bit thicker because they have more pages and they have a leather like cover. I still love the OG’s but these are a good substitute!

Loved the video! I have a question about your white fringe earrings. I have some too and I get make up on them every time I wear them. I don’t put them on until I’m completely finished and have put setting spray on but it still gets on the earrings and it makes them look horrible. Have you had this problem and if so how do you get them clean?
