For context the lunatics are the politicians and the line, 'The paper holds their folded faces to the floor' refers to their photo's in the news paper, 'and every day the paper boy brings more' which is self explanatory. Hopes this helps and all the best from the far north of New Zealand.

First heard this album in 1974 when i was 12 yrs old. I loved it straight away. I'm 61 and getting old but this never gets old.

The construction of the “Us and Them” song is really a masterpiece in how to blend the vocals, instruments, and lyrics together in order to paint a very subtle, yet intense, and thought provoking feeling throughout the song…. Then again, it’s Pink Floyd and that’s what they do best! They’re not a band, rather, they’re an experience that grabs a person’s soul and then moves their mind to places far, far deeper than anyone can comprehend….✌️😎👍🎤🔥

Genius music that will be remembered forever! Blew me away as a kid when it came out, and still does today!

The paperboy always used to deliver the paper folded up with rubber bands around it and tossed it onto your front porch, usually from his bicycle. He's referring to the folded up paper with the headlines landing face down on your porch. Therefore the paper is holding their folded faces to the floor, the lyrics are that simple!!
Also that line "you raise the blade you make the change you rearranged me till I'm sane"! They were still giving people who were completely out of control, frontal lobotomies!
They would snip a part of a person's brain (what they did to Jack Nicolson in one flew over the cuckoo's nest) and turn them into a robot basically........

Not quite...us Brits have letterboxes in our front doors which the paper gets posted through and falls on to the floor inside our house (called the hall)

The only time I heard one song at a time is when it was played over the radio. Whenever I popped in "Dark side of the Moon", it played from heart beat to heart beat and anyone who disturbed me was in trouble. Been that way for fifty years.

Facts. Possibly the closest thing any modern band has come to a true piece of art.

As Zeppelin peaked, Pink Floyd was experimenting in quadraphonic sound. This side of the album really stretches the boundaries of masterful producing and technical achievements, in the studio! The (Vietnam) war was over(ending), and the music reflected a more peaceful time to produce good music. "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon". For Dev, 15:23 I think "folded faces" means "defeated". "And every day the paper boy brings more", I think is referring to (bad) news like you read in a daily paper (today social media news). Roger Waters writes honest dark lyrics. Syd Barrett was going through things and Roger wrote about his friend often. Loved watching Dev interpret "Eclipse" lyrics, very profound ending to an epic masterpiece! Thanks again.

I've got a copy of Dark Side on Super Audio CD.
While not quadriphonic it is done from the original master recording. It is by far my favorite copy of the album after 50 years.

Somewhere online there's a surround remix by Alan Parsons - you can download it and write it to DVD. I did this a while back - it's definitely worth it if you have a surround system. Mind you this sounds pretty good through earbuds with spatial audio enabled...

Okay, so I’m unwinding with a glass of wine and a gummy 😉. Headphones on and press play. It’s time to trip to Pink Floyd with Mike and Dev.❤

“The paper holds their folded faces to the floor,
And every day the paper boy brings more.”
That’s a reference to politicians appearing in newspapers. A different day a different political leader taking their country to war etc

  • @Rickhorse1
    @Rickhorse1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Mike: "Us and Them is about isolationism." Seriously!? That's what you get? It's about the futility of war & how the leaders (the general) have no problem sending boys off to die, while average soldier comes to see there is usually little difference between sides other than which uniform you wear.

That's very true, but it also touches on the haves vs the have nots and how everyone is in it for themselves rather than helping each other.

The original title for this album was 'For Assorted Lunatics'.

    • @ianfortier6796

"Eclipse: A Piece For Assorted Lunatics", then it was shortened to just "Eclipse", then it became Dark Side Of the Moon.

Now, you should do other concept albums like The Moody Blues album, In Search Of The Lost Cord. Very strong experimental stereo. The whole album is tied together like DSOTM.

My 2 cents : The moon itself has no light. The light of the sun lands on the moon. And as large as the sun is as compared to the moon, the moon still blocks the entire sun in an eclipse. We know why this happens, but the concept is intriguing.

They weren't trying to be political or topical, they were just trying to make an album about things that (as Roger Waters put it) "make people mad"

A pedant notes - the lyrics in Brain Damage should read, "...if the _cloudbursts_ thunder in your ear..."

This is such a great album. Although, the album of theirs that meant the most to me, as a sufferer of psychological illness - is more so: The Wall.
