"The paper holds their folded faces to the floor, and everyday the paperboy brings more." Is one of my all time favorite lyrics. For me, it refers to newspapers (replaced by the internet now) and this existential dread that comes with the daily news, in a "if it bleeds, it leads" society. The newspapers are folded found the middle, and the lyric really gives ne the imagery of someone reading a paper, in a quiet state of dread, which is replaced daily by the paperboy.

    • @gibsongirl2100

Beautifully put and (I believe) spot-on. I think a lot of people miss that reference, maybe because they're looking for something more abstract in that phrase. I think even Floyd would be pleased with your imagery.

This came out a half a century ago. And it's still so relevant. This is Roger Waters' masterpiece. This album is one of the best selling LP's of all time selling over 50 MILLION copies. The album itself STILL goes platinum every year as new fans find it and old fans replace old records and CD's. Meant, by Waters, to be a one long 42 minute suite, it had to be broken up into songs so the band could be paid for an "album" & not a single. This album was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 987 weeks (That's 19 YEARS on the charts, JUST INSANE). It was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It literally is a PERFECT album. #1 of all time in my opinion. The lengths they went to, to pull this off in 1973, with no computers and analog is just astounding!!

"Any Colour You Like" is my favorite song on the Album and to me is the quintessential Floyd sound.

    • @thepragmatic6383
      @thepragmatic6383 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Roger Waters has a strong idea about the choice of the title (Any Color You Like) and its meaning. In Cambridge, where he lived at the time, vendors came from London in vans to sell bric-a-brac of cheap crockery and cutlery. One day when one of them had hooked up a customer for a set of Chinese plates, Roger overheard him selling his product, adding: "Yes ma'am, you can have them for 10p, the color of your choice, they are all BLUE (Any color you like, they're all blue)" Which led him to believe that all choices in a man's life are guided. No matter what path you take, karma will always catch up with you. Man thinks of making his own decisions, choosing his own color, but everything is already dictated, everything is BLUE. Typically Waters metaphor.

@@thepragmatic6383 I've never heard that. That was Henry Ford's famous quote, 60 years previous to that song.
When the Model-T and Model-A we're first produced, he was asked if they came in other colors: "Any color you like...as long as it's BLACK."
(They used Black paint to keep costs down, since it was the cheapest)
'Black' seemed to fit the concept, as in "There is no Dark side of the Moon really... matter of fact it's all Dark.
I'm not doubting your story. I've just never heard Roger tell it.

War is hell and war is ugly and it is something we as ordinary men (walk right into our deaths willingly) would not choose to do. When he sings "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon" after listing all the things going wrong in your day, he simply means "let it go, it means nothing". Read the very last bit after the singing has stopped.

Animals would be the easiest album to to, it's only really 3 songs, and has a cohesive theme. I would recommend following along with the lyrics. Wish You Were Here is another great, complete album, a sad and bitter ode to Syd.
The Wall is a monster of an album, and might be best reacted to as four parts. It tells the literal story of the character "Pink Floyd", a composite of Syd and Roger, from the loss of Roger's father in WWII when Roger was a baby, to Syd's descent into madness. It's a complete story told in four acts, or four sides of a double album.

I have been listening to this album since I was 15, almost 45 years ago. I played it THOUSANDS of times, Sometimes I doubt this music was made by humans. And BTW, I always have the same reaction as you in the end of the album, like:" what? Already over?" I ALWAYS have the impression that it took only 5 minutes.

Dark Side of the Moon. El mejor álbum de toda la historia del rock. Sin lugar a dudas. Y ya pronto cumple 50 años.
¡!casi mi edad¡! Agradezco haber vivido esta época en la que la real y excelente música me ayudaron a crecer.

Born in 79 and I have every vinyl record. Was babysitting with a friend and put the wall album on. Never heard it before and hooked as my favorite band of all time. Every album is amazing.

    Great reaction.
"The lunatics are in my hall, the paper holds their folded faces to the floor, and every day the paper boy brings more"
Alludes to newspapers being delivered through the door usually by young boys we refer to as "paper boys" (UK doors have letter boxes where the mail and such is delivered directly into the hall and so each morning the mail and newspapers etc lie on the floor in the hallway of our homes for us to pick them up)
It is one of those quirks where to a British person the lyrics make obvious sense but to an American who don't have letterboxes in the doors or newspapers delivered in such a way it would be hard to grasp.
So of course the lunatics are the people who make up the headlines in the newspapers and their folded faces are their photos in the newspaper that has been folded to deliver through the letterbox.

As Canada is a former English colony, we inherited these mailboxes, pierced through the door, through which the daily newspapers were delivered.
This means that we have not only inherited the face of Elisabeth II on our banknotes and our coins.

Watching your reaction makes me want to re-hear Pink Floyd again for the first time so bad. They are truly unmatched when it comes to any genre of music. The most beautiful band of all time (in my opinion) happy you got experience them and share it with all of us 🤘🏼
