Prince Harry Is Not A Victim. (SPARE Book Review)

  • God, there is just so much to say about this book. What I'll leave here is the constant thought I had while turning the pages of Spare, and that is "Why did no one tell him that publishing this was a terrible idea?" If Prince Harry was surrounded by people who loved and cared about him, they would have never let this be released into the world. The Prince comes off as bratty, pompous in places, and completely unaware of his unbelievable privilege. Who is to blame for this, I have no idea.

I think the Kate/ Catherine claim is likely to be complete bs. She was always known as Kate by the press (only four letters for headlines) until the engagement when William began to call her Catherine, which is more fitting for her role as future Queen. However, obviously Kate has stuck for the press. And weirdly a lot of people still call her Kate Middleton.
The story sounds like a terrible Meghan-myth. Her ugly stamp is all over this book.

H grew up without acknowledging his privilege, wealth and power being a prince...instead he feels pity for himself not being borne the first! He takes everything for granted and he is totally blinded by his anger, envy, jealousy and entitlement! He is a very self-centered, selfish and pathetic person!

He was never like this before MM came along, I remember an interview he and William did with Charles yrs ago when he was in his late teens I think, he said 'he was the lucky one, didn't have the weight on his shoulders his brother had and could have more fun'... he knew his brother had to work harder, study harder, not get pissed all the time and make a fool of himself, I think it should have been the time Charles said to him, well, it's been enough time since mummy died and now You have to knuckle-down too, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I think that was the missed opportunity!!

One of the things that annoyed me most about this book is his complete and utter blindness (or appreciation) of his privilege and refusal to see the wonderful things he has gained from it. He talks about how much he loves “escaping” to Africa to go on safari whenever times get tough, because he can “be normal” there. Well as someone who grew up in South Africa, I can tell you that “normal” people don’t get to just drop everything and go on holiday to another country for weeks at a time to make themselves feel better. We have to keep working because unlike him, our families don’t have huge property portfolios and provide us with mortgage-free housing & cover our living expenses. Also safari (even if you are camping) is expensive and it’s not accessible to most Africans. The sad fact is that because if high poverty rates, most African people will never get to see a lion or elephant in their lifetimes as they can’t afford to go to the private game reserves and stay at safari lodges or pay game rangers & bush guides to take them camping. Harry doesn’t seem to appreciate that he can do so much of the things he loves (like safari, polo, travel, taking a gap-year in Australia, partying with celebs) BECAUSE of his family and his position as the “spare”.

I'm currently listening to this book on Audible. The only reason I am is that I received a free trial membership and received a credit to get this audio book for free. I have no intention to spend money to listen to him whine. It does give some interesting insight into someone who has little self awareness and is trapped in his own mental health issues. I hope he gets more help for himself, but honestly as long as Harry remains married to Meghan that won't happen. Harry feeds her narcissism and Meghan feeds his mental health issues and trauma. It's sad.

@@Deltalady79 recall a conversation, many years ago, where people were wondering if they were quite so "proper" behind closed doors. As an American, I understand the misconceptions people can have over here. I had wondered what they must be like when they were out of the prying eyes of the public as well. I feel like Meghan was playing on these common misconceptions over here. Being a bit of an Anglophile, who has followed the Royal family since I was quite young, (I'm 47 now) I would say that they are a very English, but very normal family. If you pay close attention, they are quite affectionate even when they are out in public. Meghan just wanted to give that impression to those Americans who don't know any better or have already made these ridiculous assumptions about the RF. I strongly believe that she has convinced Harry that the "American" way is the right way of doing things. So his family life must have been awful. Right? Even though there is an abundance of proof that the RF laugh, joke, enjoy each other's company and treat each other with great affection. Including Harry. I do not give Harry a pass for his horrible behavior, but I do believe he has been extremely manipulated by his wife and her associates.

What is Harry talking about that Catherine wasn't harassed by the media because she was going to be the future Queen? She was mercilessly harassed by the paparazzi and called absolutely vile names to try and get a reaction out of her. The media absolutely annihilated her, and they still do when it suits them. Meghan got a relatively easy ride in comparison to Diana, Camilla, and Catherine. She was welcomed with open arms, and the criticism only came after it became obvious that she didn't care to follow royal protocols and that she was rude and was being a bully to staff. Meghan was never harassed by the paparazzi either. They just weren't that interested in her. In fact, there have been people who work in the media who have stated that the royal family never leaked anything and that once Meghan arrived, the leaks started coming thick and fast. Harry's completely blind to Meghan's machinations. It's absolutely astounding to me that he can't see what an operator she is.
Diana is actually the one who called Harry the spare, not Charles.
It's also untrue that Charles and Camilla asked Catherine to change her name to Catherine with a K because there were too many C's. Harry truly is seriously mentally ill. It's actually frightening to see the level of his delusion. He needs to get himself into long-term in-patient drug and psychiatric treatment.

He seems to me like Don Quixote, fighting an eternal fight against windmills, a fight he won't ever win and whats even worse, the windmills only exist in his head. It is as you said, even if he would win his crusade against the tabloids and the media, that still would not solve his problems. Because a lot of it lies within himself and he appears to be the most self-centered, ignorant, petulant and self-absorded individual ever 🤔

Have you watched the Vintage Read reviews? Shes excellent. I think you would enjoy her takes.
He is happy to use media when his pendulums swing 😂just like mum...unfortunately.
He was protected, loved and protected some more.
Media are disgusting...but nobody forced him to use publicity as an adult. His choice. He is typical of a brat adult who was let off for bad behaviors because adults were either lazy, too busy, or scared . His brat behaviors existed before he could talk...he can't blame the media for that. He cannot blame papa either..because mummy was very much present in his early years.
Funny thing that Henry doesn't understand is that in many families...its always the hardworking, loyal child who ends up being referred to as the 'black sheep'..which means odd one out because most sheep are white fleece, and they get kicked in the teeth by the brat in the family or the narcissists in the family..the black sheep looks after everything and everyone's needs before their own and get no grateful gratitude..just lots of complaints..my guess thats William. Its not a royal thing...or a dead mum thing...its a brat thing...Henry is a brat. Who married his female equivalent 😢.

I am obviously late to this, but I just wanted to commend you on this wonderful, insightful review! Especially since you were able to explain Harry’s mindset from your own experience. I agree 100% with your assessment on Harry’s relationship with William and his total disregard for William’s feelings, struggles, and the weight of expectations on his shoulders. Harry expects William to always give him what he needed at all times because he’s damaged and vulnerable because his mum died, but forgets that William also lost his mum. He starts a fight with William and Charles at Prince Philip’s funeral by making demands about his “Megxit” conditions and then berates them for not engaging with him, completely ignoring the fact that they had literally just buried their beloved father/grandfather.

My conclusion is that many of the things that were said to Harry (especially by William) he didn't understand at all. And also, I don't think Harry understands it (I wonder if the ghost writer does) that that 2 "fight" scenes with William are just William being desperate to reach towards Harry. I read it as such. And I don't think I'm wrong about it.
And thank you for pointing William's strugle. I also didn't find William jelous of Harry's achivements but of Harry's freedom.

Harry was told over and over by his Mum that he was special and didn't have to do anything that he didn't want to do. (He says that she told him, just don't get caught). There seem to have been absolutely zero boundaries set for him nor any rules that absolutely had to be followed. When he told us that as a child ( and now as a man of 38) that William got 5 sausages for breakfast one morning and he only got 4 that really ended it for me. He remembered this incident and harbored it over and over. "IF" the children are real they are going to have a very hard time during their lives, and that is sad. Thanks for doing this book, I was surprised your chose to review it.

Harry wanting to control how he is "portrayed" in the media is a manifestation of his insecurities when he was a child and being told he was "less than" his brother. His own mother said on TV and other media outlets that Harry is the "spare" and he isn't smart enough to go to a normal school. Diana was always quick to praise William and to say that she wants to protect William's future. Harry, on the other hand, was always sidelined. Not saying this to defend Harry because he's definitely old enough to work through those insecurities. Just saying that the media is mostly reporting from Harry's own actions.

I don’t think so. She was welcomed at the beginning. People picked up her awful and entitled behaviour. Royalty went to her head. She thinks she’s a superstar in her own head. Both of them Harry and Meghan are feeding each other’s egos.

The British Public welcomed her, she was very popular until the cracks started showing. It had nothing to do with her race, Britain is very culturally diverse. Their Prime Minister and the Lord Mayor of London both have far darker skin than Meghan and they won the popular vote

Whew what a long video. Wasn't going to sit through this since this isn't a topic I have any interest, but somehow you've made it tolerable.

Exactly my thoughts 😅 Ugh, not another Spare video (then sat through the entire video - and enjoyed it!). Amazing how Erica manages to come up with so many original points.

I heard Harry never ever thought of himself as physical spare parts for William, until Harry's first-wife came along. Hmmm ps whar sort of doopy plodder cled Harry, gives their kid a middle name of "Harry's-son", it's beyond lame, it's embarrassing.

I wouldn't say Harry is addicted to the media as much as it's a fixation, which makes total sense to me. The media is a source of a lot of his trauma. I'm sure he blames the media for his mother's death, as many of us do. I personally would never want to switch places with him, even for all the royal riches.

Yeah sure you can blame everyone in his family. Harry is surrounded by people like you who keep telling him that you failed because it's someone else's fault. Look at him now almost 40 years old still sitting there with his drugs and complaining.
