    If you were in the Gaangs position you wouldn’t trust Zuko either. We as viewers know more about Zuko’s character development but the only thing the Gaang knows is Zuko betraying them in Ba Sing Se and sending a highly skilled assassin after them. Let alone all the additional hardships the Gaang endured due to the actions of Zuko and his crew.

      Yeah it's very telling that Toph is the only one who was willing to consider him joining, as he wasn't really chasing them when Toph joined the Gaang. Her experience with him is just the fight in Ba Sing Se but contrasted with her knowing and liking Iroh, so she has way less of a personal stake in the argument

      For a fun thing to do. Watch atla, but skip every scene the gang isn't in. No Zuko alone, only half of avatar and the Firelord, etc
      It really drives home how merciful they are to Zuko.

    • @hotuannam5346
      @hotuannam5346 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      And Toph's comment on how Zuko was being genuine doesn't hold much weight in Zuko's defense for the Gaang either cuz Zuko was genuine back when he was in Ba Sing Se too but when the time came he made his choices and the Gaang plus pretty much the world suffered the consequences. Zuko had it rough but many other people who suffered from the war had it way worse and they were counting on Aang and his allies to saved them from the Fire Nation. Zuko not only betrayed the newfound sympathy the Gaang had for him but the whole world as well (and they made sure to show it through baby Hope's family, Jin and the teashop owner's fear and despair when the Fire Nation march into Ba Sing Se). The Gaang had every reason to distrust and hate him due to their history and how Zuko's action almost destroy the Avatar for good and could have led to the Fire Nation destroying everyone else.

      Honestly, I think they loss in Ba Sing Se affected her the most. She was always quick to trust people and was even the first one to forgive Zuko and that character trait almost led to Aang's dead. I'm 100% she felt guilty about it because she, unfortunately, always seem to take everything on her own shoulders. The war took its toll on all of them but I think at this point in the story it affected Aang but especially Katara the most.

    This episode displays the shows incredible writing. Everything that happens and all the dialogue not only helps expand every one of the characters in the main group, but is also, above all else, totally believable. We all saw zuko joining the group in the future, but it would have been too convenient if he was just accepted into the group. Other good shows would have used Aang's need for a firebending teacher as justification and left it at that. But this show spends an entire episode exploring how each main character really feels about Zuko's redemption. It helps with everyones character development, but also makes Zuko's redemption feel really earned. Great and underrated episode

    The Western Air Temple is such an interesting location for this episode. Zuko has to go down, to humble himself, to be able to go up in his life, he advances in his 'destiny' by retracting of everything he used to be. It's a 'conversion' or 'inversion', when he tries to be good, it seems to be impossible, like those buildings that have been built upside down.

    there is this theory going around that zuko doesn't know the names of the group, he calls aang "the avatar" and for the rest of the group he used bad nicknames (at the time). for example in book one when the team was captured by the pirates zuko sais to sokka "shut your mouth watertribe peasant".
    in the next few episode you can see him learning the names through others. in "the southern raiders" episode (wich you guys appearantly have seen) zuko sais to sokka "Your sister. She hates me! And I don't know why, but I do care what she thinks of me" than sokka responded with "Nah, she doesn't hate you. Katara doesn't hate anyone...." that is the moment zuko learns katara's name, and starts calling her that.
    wich is super funny because we as viewers, expect that he somehow knows their names, but noone has mentioned their names to him. but that is why he starts off with "hello, zuko here" by telling his name, he might get to know their name"

    It was hard to watch Zuko struggle so much to try and make right by the Gaang. He really is ashamed of what he's done, and watching him do his best to fix his mistakes is really wholesome. The Gaang hasn't seen all the progress he's made like we have, so its understandable that they don't trust him at all at first, but I was so relieved once they decided to give him a chance.

  • @IamnotJohnFord
    @IamnotJohnFord ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Katara and Sokka have only known war with the evil Fire Nation their entire lives. There mother was killed by Fire Nation warriors. Their father has been off to war. They are basically orphans. Their village is in shambles. Zuko helped kill Aang. So, yeah, they aren't very trusting of Fire Nation warriors in general and Zuko in particular. The reluctance and mistrust are understandably valid. Hell, Iroh is doing his own thing, and he has largely left Zuko to figure it out on his own. One thing I never thought would happen has happened. Even Iroh has lost trust in Zuko. As cliché as it is, he knows that sometimes you have to set people you love free and hope they figure it out and come back to you.
    BTW, season one and parts of season two are the set up for the latter parts of season two and all of this final season. People go on about how the first season isn't as good. They were establishing a world and the people in it. It's meant to be a bit episodic and disjointed. It seems these days that movies and tv shows use character stereotypes because audiences, or executives paying the bills, don't have patience for worldbuilding and character development. So, just slap some protagonist, antagonist, side-kick, and comic relief paint on a few characters and get to the story.

    I used to hate that he backslid in the season 2 finale. However, as I’ve gotten older, it feels more real with the ups and downs. Redemption, addiction, grief, all of those very HUMAN things, are never linear. It was so important for Zuko to be given everything he thought he wanted. It would have been too easy to turn against his father when he was still banished. It means way more for who Zuko has become as a character when he actually has to sacrifice the life he wants to do what’s right. If he had to give nothing up, not confront his father and turn against his own blood, would it mean as much as if he hadn’t?
    This is why his redemption arc is the blueprint. So brilliantly done.

      @@Sinewmire but the difference is that katara won't ever hurt innocent people bc of her pain. She will turn hama on steroids to protect her people and she won't have issues destroying the enemy but not innocent people

      @sebastyann123 it's easy to expand the definition of 'bad people who deserve it for threatening your love ones' to 'enemy civilians'. It's quite a small step, but an important one.

    They didn't get to see Zuko's character development. So they had no reason to believe he'd changed for the better, especially given the last thing they remember him doing was betray Katara and help Azula strike down Aang.

    Great reaction. I love this episode and this third season. Book 1 gives us the world & character building we need, Book 2 provides the struggle and set backs which then make the cathartic resolutions of Book 3 so impactful. Will be here for the remaining episodes, all of which are really good.
    I'm also glad you appreciate Katara's reaction. Some people are hard on Katara for it, but I love how fiercely protective she is of Aang in the last scene. She might be the worst person in Team Avatar to be on the wrong side.

    Funny you mention Zuko's eye color. If you notice they vaguely assigned different colors for different nations. It's not a hard rule but generally fire nation is gold/amber, Earth Kingdom is various shades of green, water tribe obviously blue and air nomads grey. There's cases where it's not 100% like Ty Lee has greyish eyes. But they did it to help differentiate the nations

    The show to me seems to allow the viewer to grow with the characters and kinda join in on the journey, taking a childlike view in book 1 to getting more mature and serious, actually feeling the weight of what’s happening as we get to book 3. To the point we start expecting so much from it forgetting sometimes it’s meant for kids/tweens.
