I dont think I've ever laughed so hard at a reaction video before! Watching you trying to reduce Jim Morrison's lyrics to mundane trivialities was hysterical. Morrison was a poet for the ages - each word carefully placed and calculated to have a myriad of meanings. You get him or you don't. You didn't. It's not your fault.

this reaction just makes you both seem very dense. that you couldn't enjoy this.. it's bad ass and fun as hell. his voice is so powerful and raucous.. this was a huge deal for a first song. it's talking about breaking out and through on to the other side of enlightment. the doors are based on a book called the doors of perception . pretty much if you'd open the doors of perception the veil would be dropped and you'd see that we are all one with everything and we are infinite.

Ok, not to be a pedantic arse.. but I just have to say it. You always talk about DMT, but what you are really thinking about is LSD. Two completely different chemicals. DMT/ayahuasca is a completely reality-replacing experience that didn't really get widespread until the last 10-20 years. What you are describing all the time, and what these artists are singing about, is the domain of LSD, mushrooms and peyote. That is what changed society in the 60's. DMT is something else entirely. Coming from your level of knowledge on the subject you would probably think "Ahh, semantics. It's all drugs." It's honestly not, it's seriously different. A LSD trip lasts up to 10-12 hours, DMT lasts for 15 minutes.

This song is about breaking through the "doors of perception"- what you see and think to be real, and what really is real- to the "other side", the side of life and everything you've never seen before. This means different things to different people. The gateway could be sex, drugs, or music, or just a personal revelation you have, but at some point in our lives, we have to "break on through to the other side" and find our own version of the truth in life.

Put the bible down, pick up Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley. BTW, any reference to getting high was risky, even in 1967. The 'getting high" vocals on the track was recently included during the remastering process, it was not to be heard on their albums prior to remastering. Also, during their performance on Ed Sullivan in 1967, the band was urged to change a lyric in Light my Fire, "better" instead of "higher". The band agreed, but Jim kept the word "higher" in the performance. This led to the band being banned from performing on the Ed Sullivan show again. The Ed Sullivan Show did manage to get the Rolling Stones to change the lyrics in their performance of Let's Spend the Night Together.

I saw Doors live. I was very young but was unforgettable. Jim Morrison also wrote books of poetry as well as lyrics for their song. You absolutely could not directly reference many inferences in songs then. Most especially drugs n sex. Also Doors were around Berkeley scene. The drugs of their day n those was acid- aka LSD. Quite different than DMT I’m told. Having not taken DMT I only know it’s intense n over. Acid trips could go 24 hours. Jim was known as “ the Lizard King”. Doors would go out to desert in shamanistic way to experience acid trips. Breaking through I believe he meant smashing thru societies constraints. But he also cautions on false illusions which I believe he’s singing about w the chains. Also with the gate. You believe you’ve found the way n you find there’s these other obstacles that either impede it or shoe it to be an illusion of being the way. He was searcher as well thru many philosophical n religious imageries. Also had the whole explosion w Timothy Leery n the “ Electric Koolaid Acid Test” book about experiences of Ken Kesey n his merry band. Mescaline, psilocybin , peyote etc were plentiful n commonplace. Believe someone mentioned the Sullivan show controversy by being vilified for singing couldn’t get any HIGHER. There are many other songs that are fascinating by them - The End, LA Woman, Back Door Man, People are Strange( which think you’d find interesting about illusion n marginalization).

the song is about death. (breaking through to whatever exists outside of the physical body)
morrison was obsessed with death. you could hear references to death in MANY of his songs.
he saw death as the ultimate thrill ride.
he toyed with the idea over and over, playing with dangerous and risky behaviors in an attempt to get closer and closer to death.
there's a fine line between extreme risk-taking and suicide. jim wanted to peer over the edge of death and see what was there. he finally got so close that he fell over.

Sori poodle skirts were the 50’s. You can usually find one at Halloween costume store. I got one there when wore it w the fuzzy sweater n dumb pin on side. Saddle shoes n Bobby Sox completed look plus my giant beehive hairdo w one long piece hanging down. That’s the iconic look of 50’s. Look at American Graffiti.

Couldn't have picked a more perfect person to play Morrison. Singing was spot on, and he was so method, got so deep into character, that he had to go for therapy after, to help get him back out. That's the kind of rock biography acting and singing that deserves an Oscar, not being a Freddie Mercury look alike with the help of makeup.

This song is kind of saying Break on through the other side of the veil. Crossing through the other side of death. Jim was curious about death a lot. It also means break on through with drugs to see the other side of death.

I still get goosebumps everytime I hear this song. Jim Morrison, but The Doors are true American treasures. No one sounded like them before and no one has sounded like them since. Jim Morrison was a true poet. Jim lived fast and died young, but he wasn't as bad off as people think. Sadly his death is mysterious, there are numerous situations that how it could have happened, including the sketchiness of no one seeing his body except his gf and someone to sign the certificate, even the manager who flew there didn't see it, it was a sealed casket. You should listen to "Light My Fire", their biggest hit, but you might get a kick out of them getting kicked off Ed Sullivan Show after saying "higher" live.

To understand Jim's lyrics look at his influences, like Rimbaud, William Blake, Aldous Huxley, shamanism, Dionysus (Bachus), he believed himself to be a shaman and was looking for enlightenment through excess, excess of drugs and psychedelics, excess of pleasure and new experiences, etc., he also believed in automatic writing as the best way to enlightenment and true creativity so he was writing stream of consciousness poetry - while really fucking high on drugs.

If you want some amazing poetry check out The Ghost Song by the Doors. Morrison was one of a kind. At age 18 he asked for the complete works of Nietzsche for a graduation present. By that age he had read, Jung, Reich, Otto Rank, Huxley, Blake, Freud, Artaud, Greek philosophy... Just to name a very small few. He had a genius IQ and left references in his songs to a lot of the books he read ...
One of the references here is surely about Reich, a chapter in his book: "break through to the biological realm," where instinct and the sexual impulse is valued over moral and societal judgement and pressure....
