I agree that Jerry’s show was trash, but I will always have respect for him. This is what he said on his show, in 1993. I know the wording was not there yet, but the message was, at the time, a very powerful one.
“You know in this competitive world of television ratings, I'm tempted to tell you that I used to be a woman. The revelation of which would most certainly place me on the cover of people and a guest shot on everybody else's talk show. But of course that's not true. I'm a guy. I've always been a guy and ever since puberty, when Annette Funicellos started replacing Yogi Berra posters on my bedroom wall, I never questioned that I would always be a guy. And I didn't have to look in the mirror to have that assurance. But what if I didn't have that assurance? What if despite the appendages to my body, in my mind, I felt like and believed I was really a woman? Would a body part dictate who I am? What I am? If a baby's born with a defective heart, liver or blind or without a limb, we embrace the infant, love him or her, hold the telephone and do whatever it takes to bring comfort. We don't say too bad. That's what God intended. Let's not correct the problem and hate the kid for trying to fix the defect. Then why do we get so upset if the defect relates to gender? If our guests today have body parts that don't relate to who they are, why can't they fix that? that's actually... pretty solid. somewhat off color with it's comparison, but i can see how that could change a lot of people's minds. in 1993 that's pretty rare to hear on a tv show imo, especially so outward!! thank u for sharing this nugget of info, definitely an interesting read.

Some aspects of it are real there have been fairly real chaotic people especially the first few seasons. But obviously you can only have so much home grown crazy so they got more gimmicky and staged. Also technically Santa is real....cause ...he was based on a saint.

I agree with you, in that cheating is wrong, no matter the circumstance.
But because of the society we live in, I can give some grace to gay people in straight relationships searching outside the relationship.
The one cheated on didn’t deserve it, and has every right to be upset. There were better ways to handle it, of course, but due to societal oppression and people not always being rational, I can’t fully blame the cheater. (Though NO blame goes to the one cheated on, unless they’ve been abusive which can make it hard to communicate or leave)
And I can agree with OP that I think it’d hurt less if it was because they discovered something about themselves they didn’t know before. It would be less personal, if that makes sense. I’d still be hurt that they went behind my back instead of trusting me enough to communicate, but it’s better than cheating for any other reason.
I’ve also never been in a serious relationship before. I’m also an asexual lesbian, so my viewpoint may be different from allos or straights/multi-sexuals
I agree I don’t think I would be mad, just probably more hurt. Like yes if they were discovering their sexuality I would be happy for them and proud of them for living their truth, but I also feel like if they’re questioning their sexual identity then they should be honest with their partner and break things off if that’s what’s necessary
Yeah, one parent left my other parent because they fell in love with someone else. I think I'd probably have a lot of negative feelings and not like the step parent if they had been opposite gender, but because they were the same gender it was more like. Oh my parent who's only ever been kind to me and has never done anything for themselves my entire life, discovered they were attracted to the same gender and did something for themselves for the first time. And I couldn't be mad about that. My siblings felt differently unfortunately, later found out it was not just the cheating, but also for homophobic reasons.

I have a cousin that was on an episode of Jerry Springer. It was one of the "Lesbian Love Triangle" episodes. Believe it or not, her real life (before she cleaned up her act) was WAY more chaotic than that one appearance.

@crappyaccount they gave her some money to buy some clothes and said "when you go out, just go at it". I have absolutely no doubt that other episodes were likely scripted, but hers wasn't. They just wanted her to play it in a big way.

Two of my best friends of the community were on that show in the late '90's. The plotline never changes. Flew them out, picked them up in a limo, provided plenty of "pepsi competitor" in the greenroom, filmed the show, and flew them back, all on the same day. One of them was "paired" with a guy with a prosthetic. Handcuffed himself to the prosthetic and threatened to keep it until he told his wife about their "relationship." Insane.

Back in the day, my sister and her friends would go on these shows for fun and money. Jerry Springer, Ricky Lake, you name it. What she learned is that for a legal reasons everyone knows exactly why they’re there. That way no one tries to hurt someone on or after the show where the show can be held liable. The other thing is, she was always told to play up the most dramatic scene ever for the audience by production. If production did not think your story was juicy enough, they would give you a new story for you to act out on stage. Not to mention they got free plane tickets, free hotel rooms, and money to spend while they’re in town all just for going on a show for like five minutes.
I guess that explains why the Jenny Jones show got sued after a guest got blindsided by his male friend being in love with him... and then murdered him a few days later.
