People are commenting here based on the video title without watching it gets on my nerves honestly. Proves the damage that tiktok/shorts/reels made to us. Angie here is telling that calling it "deinfluencing" is stupid because if you are someone that review makeup products, mentioning something you don't like is still what a "review" is. It's still "influencing". This is the whole point of job. These "influencers" out there are not supposed to love every single product they tried.
Like most trends it started with the intentions of “hey you don’t need 100 blushes” to help with that over consumption. A lot like the anti haul. It then turned to “I’m not buying this, but I’m buying this!” Or now the shady “don’t buy this buy this” (and totally an ad) I enjoyed the original aspect, just like I liked the original antihauls but like the original: when it turns to buying more… not a fan
Absolutely! I also see a massive amount of shaming others for their purchases. Those doing the shaming are people that call out every new release as unsustainable but don't understand what sustainability is (although it's now just a marketing tactic), they think everything made in China is garbage from sweatshops and they blast every dupe product as a copycat made by lazy, uncreative brands. Yes, the market may be oversaturated but this means consumers have many options at all prices.
Finally someone putting into words what i was thinking! People just loooove to re-name the same trends once in a while (and its not necessarily bad, if it brings new audience), but this is just anti-haul in a 1-3 minutes format
I saw one person use deinfluencing to show all the mess in their house and how life is not always instagram ready or picture perfect and I really liked that energy.
It’s still not ‘de-influencing,’ though: the creator is *influencing you to not buy as much and have a more measured approach to consumption. The word itself is a misnomer.
😂😂😂😂😂 I should show my bedroom….. it’s bad . The truth , I am an actual hoarder and it’s crazy in here . I don’t even get to use most of the things I get I just find a spot for them and try to use what I have open already which is a city of products taking up my entire desk area . I could rival a small Sephora. .
Most de-influencing tiktoks were full of comments asking where they got their shirt, their mug, their shelves... So even when someone was trying to get them to buy less, the commenters wanted to buy more. What they actually want is not to buy less, it's to buy more with the same amount of money.
Yes! Saying "don't buy this" is INFLUENCING people to not buy something. Deinfluencing would be stopping your job and no longer talking about products.
I love Jen Phelps because she reviews makeup but always compares it to her existing collection and tells you where the "dupes" are in your collection or at the drugstore. She motivates me to use what I have or look to drugstore over Sephora.
😆 I’m a couple of decades older than you. This reminds me of going to the mall with my mom and sisters. We called it “window shopping”, because we rarely bought anything, just wanted/needed to see what the latest styles were.
People use “deinfluencing” to mean so many different things now and the term has been diluted. I’d prefer it if content creators used the more specific terminology already available to explain what they’re doing! Antihauls, reviews, “buy this not that” already exist and are perfectly descriptive. On the note of TikTok coming up with new names for existing concepts, I saw a TH-cam short a while back that demonstrated a new trend called “micro-concealing” and everyone in the comments was like “……… you mean spot concealing????” 😂
I think Charlotte Holdcroft is doing the best job of "deinfluencing". She has a whole series where she'll tell you why you don't have to buy the new makeup releases.
I feel like Hannah Louise Poston has a good balance of "do I need it irregardless of quality?" and I appreciate the process of thought that she presents for it. Also the idea of using what we already own in multiple ways is something that I enjoy. I have a feeling that the next phase is going to be more focused on tutorials and more creative video ideas and not so much first impressions, hauls and reviews non stop.
I repurposed an eye primer in my Boxy. I mixed a bit of a light concealer and it works great. I always try to repurposed things like using a Boxycharn or Colourpop boxes we store our Lego in. 🤣🥰🤪
Hannah Louise Poston is fantastic, and so is Charlotte Holdcroft. She has a series called “You don’t need that,” which is great at talking me out of buying things I don’t need or essentially already own.
I’m not big into beauty tik tok because so many of the creators seem…fake. So I’ve mainly seen de-influencing in the context of people stitching Amazon hauls of unnecessary kitchen and home products and showing “dupes” you might already have in your home, and I love those. I’m all for anti-consumption whenever possible and I’m glad it’s reaching the teens!
When you started talking about what the term "deinfluencing" means, I immediately heard Kimberly Clark in my head, singing "What I'm not gonna buuuuy-hiii"... I loved those anti-haul videos! I loved the blunt honesty blended with great humor (kinda reminds me of *you*, now that I think about it!). I'm excited and delighted for the way Chris' music career took off, but I do miss that channel :)
A review is when we learn why someone is expressing a particular opinion. In every public conversation, it's so much more enlightening to know "why." I choose my channels (like this one) because I learn something other than a stranger's opinion; I like information, no matter what the reviewer's opinion.
I loved a good Kimberly Clark video. It was nice to hear from someone that we did not need to buy something even though 25 other people were saying it was a necessity. I am more “influenceable” than I’d like to admit, and I guess I needed to hear it was fine to not buy something that was/is trending or viral.
I absolutely love your channel. You make makeup fun. And the honest reviews really matter. I appreciate your honesty. I don’t watch tik tok. When someone says everything is great you just know it is not true. And all your pets are precious!
Charlotte Holdcroft has an entire “You Don’t Need Any of That” series that I enjoy watching every time I’m fighting the compulsion to purchase things. I love her humor!
I don’t have TikTok, I just got to know the term ‘deinfluencing’ through insta or YT and I honestly didn’t get the word. Like as an INFLUENCER you are influencing people. No matter if it’s to buy or not buy something. I don’t see it as something new. It’s just something that influencers already do with sharing their opinions. Like my issue is the word itself. Like isn’t the aim of deinfluencing to influence you to do / not do something? In the end it’s still influencing (at least to me 😅).
I prefer watching TH-cam over TikTok. I like to know why someone doesn't or does like a product I'm interested in. It does help when I'm deciding if I would. I also don't like to watch videos that someone is always angry. I don't understand why anyone would. I'm a person who prefers happy and uplifting.
I genuinely laugh out loud at Angelicas way with words, love her philosophy on life, maybe because we are the same age, but I tend to agree with most of her opinions.
@kimclarkqueen made an art form of the anti-haul, witty, goofy, sassy, and smart. Incomparable. Miss her videos, but happy Chris has gone on to even bigger things. Maybe we’ll get to see Kimberly again some day.
Charlotte Holdcroft "you don't need that!" is the best. Not just "don't buy that" it's wait for review, wait for a sale, do you only like the embossing? Do you have this color? Is that for your skintype?
It's interesting to see how tiktok's faster pace has brought them through "the influencer cycle" in only a couple years what took us about 10. It's been reminding me of the phases we went through as a group, too. It will be interesting to see what happens once they catch up with where we are now - where will they go next? Sociology scholars will have so much to look at with the Beauty Community in Early Internet Studies of the future 😂
I totally with you on this one. About influencers who does it well, I'd say Charlotte Holdcroft has a whole playlist named "you don't need that" and it's GREAT!
I think where people save the most money on is mascara, eyeliner pencils, eye brow products & lip products I’ve found a video from Marlena Stell yesterday she’s been in the industry as a product development for 14 years and brands literally told her there’s no difference in formulation between drugstore, high end & luxury brands since those types of products are literally made in the same factory so you’re literally paying mainly for the brands name that’s it I really recommend watching her video she’s really informative and helpful she knows what she’s talking about and it’s definitely a good way to save money
Well I'm way too old for Tik Tok I'm not here for it. And I'm late to the party for TH-cam. I love your channel, your honesty, humor, reviews. And I look at it like this, I'm a big girl I can decide for myself what to buy or not & I look to you & a few others for guidance. You do a great job. Thank you for all you do.
These ladies have perfected the way to de influence that it’s hard to know the real real Remember they edit edit edit to switch up the narrative, making it really difficult what to believe, and exhausting
This is why I love panning community - it's about using the makeup one already have while mainstream creators are like "buy buy buy". I understand that new and hot and (falsely)exciting product are what brings click and views and that's why such videos are popular. I like watching new releases and some reviews too. But panning community gave me that easiness with saying no to shopping. Like how many items I need, how much am I able to use during one month, do I have dupes - honest answers to those questions helped me find enjoyable balance between buying and apreaciating what I already have. But it's still influencing - listening to advaices how to minimise shopping, how to make meaningful purchasing decisions, how to do everyday makeup with panning goals. Every time when we're listening to someone we're influenced. So I agree the "deinfluance" term is stupid. I'm trying to be smart with purchasing makeup especially since I'm on a budget and I need to plan such spendings. Currently I'm saving up in case if Angie brings another collar
I used to watch panning creators but stopped bc it irks my nerve so bad to see someone focusing on one little area of an eyeshadow/powder product and then being like OMG I HIT PAN! Well duh anyone would hit pan like that. Just use the damn powder and hit pan organically. THATS what i want to see! Stupid i know but it grinds my gears so bad. 🤷🏻♀️
I bought the Melt Muerte palette after 3 years of pining for it. I'm happy I had the opportunity and I appreciated the chance to finally buy it, but did it change my life? No, not really. It changed my pining into a desire to use it and a little guilt when I don't. Is that better? Maybe a bit, but pining wasn't hurting me. My life wasn't changed by the product I thought about for 3 years, so that highlighter on tiktok can't possibly change yours.
Charlotte Holdcroft's series do you need that is fantastic. She really makes me ask myself, do i need it? Do i have something similar in my collection? Do i want it just because it has pretty packaging or pretty embossing. I love how honest you are, Angie. i know i can trust what you're saying, and you help me make good purchasing decisions.
THANK YOU when I heard about "deinfluencing" the first thing I thought was "isn't that an anti-haul?" people on tik tok really be copying youtube thinking they're visionaries
I really love Charlotte Holdcroft's 'You don't need that!' videos.😁 And I watch a lot of encouraging panning content (eventhough I rarely pan anything)...Pantastic ladies are great.😊 x
Charlotte Holdcroft on TH-cam does fantastic “You do not need That” videos. She points out the marketing techniques and gimmicks that make new makeup so tempting and helps me rationally decide if the actual product is worth it. Her cheeky humor keeps it fun.
Love your new, varied videos and commentary; you provide a welcome respite from the standard "look what's new!" Quick pivot: Wayne Goss' Nutmeg lipstick is my absolute favorite lip product. I've repurchased that shade, and it always goes with me on teips. (Of course, I'm part of the lipstick generation...)
Lol, the term/slang “deinfluencing” itself is a misnomer. They are still influencing. They are just influencing you to NOT buy something 😂 Anti Hauls have been a thing for a long time and Tina from TheFancyFace has done “Shopping Block” videos for a while now that I really enjoy
I'm learning at 30 that I don't need to buy something because it is my favorite influencer's favorite thing, even Angie's favorite 😄. The same influencer is going to have a new favorite next month and never talk about that product again, leaving me feeling disappointed that I don't have that "connection" with them anymore. We all want to feel liked and included, which extends to people on the internet. That is why name brands and luxury designers have a market.
Agreed. I watch every Angie video and can you guess how many orange blushes I own? Zero. I won't love everything I'm recommended and can't afford everything I might enjoy. It's important to remember that.
@@diamondinmyeye6160 So true! I actually look pretty washed out in warm tones so my base colors are all opposite to hers, but I love seeing other people genuinely excited about artistic expression, in any form. And I am inspired to experiment with colors that look great on me!
I agree, i also had to learn by 43 (lol) that i don't need to fall into the big hype of new products. Like if i still really want it after a month or so than I'll consider purchasing it after I really consider if i "need" it, not want it. Tbh i work in Sephora and with all the price increases from the brands its really hard, even with my discount, to maintain my collection. I have to choose what's most important to me, bc rent and groceries and gas are expensive too!!!
I love when you do your hair this way. It's so pretty. I have a triple barrel but mine is a lot smaller than the newer ones that have come out. I kinda like my waves smaller but I have quite long/thick hair so I might grab a big one too.
Hi Angelica , thank for doing this video, I appreciate your honesty in your videos about products eg. ( do I need, want or don’t want/ need) new launches in makeup. Love Katherine xoxo
Maybe you have talked about this before but I don’t remember it but how have the pets that came from Sweden adjusted to Texas? Do they seem to enjoy the warmer weather also?
100% hate the term. It's a massive lie in itself, like an oxymoron, "I'm going to INFLUENCE you by *giggle giggle* NOT INFLUENCING you! Omg I'm so trend setting!" Stupid
I love you mentioned Kimberly. I used to watch evryone of their vids. But they’re living their best life doing what they love. But it was so nice to have someone like Kimberly who talked about anti consumerist principles in the way they did. A lot of ppl loose the plot. (Just like ppl seem to not understand socialism and think it’s a poverty cult and not about a govt’s responsibility to its ppl, capital accumulation, and labor getting a greater share of the profit they create.) Being an anti consumerist doesn’t mean you don’t buy anything, something near impossible in a world that is capitalist (even counties like China which are supposedly communist but is really just an authoritarian govt that does some socialism). I don’t even like the term anti consumerist bc it doesn’t actually describe what most ppl mean. Also I don’t think we can solve the planets problems with individual actions, & way to many ppl think we as individuals are responsible for fixing systemic sht that needs a systemic solution. Like climate change. Even if evryone drove electric cars it would t come close to fixing climate change bc that electricity for your car comes in large part from fossil fuels. The answer has to be through govt regulation and investment in renewable energy. Same with the problems of over consumption. Is it a good idea to buy reusable bottles and not a single use plastic bottle every time we’re out? ofc, but that won’t solve the problem. So I loved the way ppl like Kimberly talked about consumption.
Charlotte Holdcraft has been doing the series “you don’t need that” for a long time. Those are my favorite videos she puts out. Jen Phelps does good honest reviews as well that reminds you not to buy everything or to look for reasonable alternatives.
I’m glad I’m not losing my mind. We wear a lot of the same shades only I need a neutral undertone. I have probably half a dozen Tarte foundations in light medium neutral and when I put this one on, I wondered if my eyes were wrong lol. 😂
Lauren Mae has been really inspiring me to find things I love in my own collection rather than buy something just because it’s new! Her shop my stash videos are always a lot of fun.
It kind of reminds me when years ago started this trend on TH-cam to give bad reviews for the sake of "honesty" but then it was uncovered that some influencers discovered that companies can pay you to give bad reviews to competitors, even Pretty Pastel Please made a series called "The secret world of influencers" 3 episodes where she explained how it works, is legal and how they disguise that kind of sponsored content. Disturbing... maybe Tiktok is going to that point now 🤷♀️
I agree. I mean I like it when you say why you don’t like a product but the whole “deinfluencing” thing is just stupid to me & people are just doing it because they think it’s “trendy” it’s not a flex & doing whole videos of stuff to deinfluence is getting old. I’d much rather watch regular review videos where you tell why you love and why you hate products but not the same videos of hating products over and over ugh 🙄
I have been watching a lot of Panners, but they are still influencing me to do something but in this case not spend money but use my own stuff I already have. Its still influencing though. Only if I stopped being on social media, it would really be de-influencing
Completely agree with you. I think at one stage back in like 2017-20 F.O.M.O. was a big thing and if your favourite influencer told you this is the bees knees you went out and got it. I think the financial issues that have come from the global you know what has helped people realise that hmmm maybe I dont need everything and I am ok with missing out on all the hyped stuff and just save for one or two things that you really like/want. Thank you for always being open and honest with us and all the effort you go to for us. You my Happy Clown Queen are awesome ❤
A new time calls for a new term, true, but that used to happen every 100 years and, now, it happens every 100 hours, that's what makes it exhausting. Every four days-ish, a teenager in middle america will 'invent' a concept that dates back to the ancient roman empire
I love your take on this. I wonder if it’s this hard like of separation the younger generation is trying hard to make. I don’t do tiktok or makeup reels on insta much, but sometimes if I doomscroll I get what is basically an infomercial. I wonder if they realize they can be had for such a cheap price to shill stuff
It’s weird that you posted this because it’s exactly what I wrote about in my ramble on my stories today, if you get two minutes to read feel free 😂 people I always watch is Ali Glines, Jess and Robert and James Welsh, no we don’t have the same makeup style at all but they never ever have given off the vibe that they have some other kind of motive behind what they say or review and I’ve got a lot of respect for them I know James and Robert are newer but they just give off a good vibe I go off vibes a lot 🤭
On TH-cam, (I don't watch tiktok because I just like long form better) I say Samantha March, and You really made me remember if I buy everything, then I end up not using up anything. I got into a phase when covid happened, of buying everything, and I'm finally getting out of it.
I’m glad Gen Z is holding their influencers accountable to more healthy and realistic standards. With that being said, when influencers actively “de-influence” and are vocal about it, it feels manipulative. I don’t think they’re doing it because it’s the right thing and makes sense. If it were earnest, they would have been doing it back when Kimberly Clark made it a thing. I think they’re doing it now because if they don’t, they won’t have a career. No product is always outstanding for everyone and being overly positive isn’t the same thing as being truly relatable. Here’s another hint for influencers as well. The fact that you get paid what you get paid and buy your own McMansions makes you unrelatable, so you can focus on your skills and doing what your audience needs you to do and you don’t need to worry about relatability.
I was so happy to see your video come up this morning! You are absolutely right about deinfluencing…I’m often left thinking “but why? Why do you not like this…”. I’m excited to see this exciting video you hinted about. We need to see the pups! Tesla and Kaisa haven’t made an appearance in a while! ❤❤
+1 to Filia’s comment here. Deinfluencing is the wrong word for what this is. Angie is absolutely correct!!! You give a review and ‘influence’ the viewer based on this to purchase or not to purchase the product. I do think that shorts/ reels/TikTok is damaging content online if the format is not used in the right way for the right type of content.
Hey girl I just love your videos you are so so gorgeous u don’t even need to wear makeup ♥️ beautiful look today as always can u do a double cut crease sometime have a blessed day 💕💕💕💕☘️☘️☘️
I think de-influencing is really important as the value of being mindful about overconsumption is impactful to the way the environment and climate is effected. We need this generation to be more mindful about their purchases and the way they are disposing of all of the things they feel like they need to buy because they don't have as strong of media literacy growing up with TikTokers/TH-camrs constantly telling them "they need this".
@@AngelicaNyqvist Agree! Intent is important - it's easy to see which de-influencers have the right intention and which are attempting to grow into the very role they are critiquing
@@petra1995 I don't think you're watching the right creators! I don't find that to be the case at all in the people I see/follow on tiktok in this genre
I think Jen Luvs Reviews is the best at this "de-influencing" thing.... She's been doing it for a very very long time....ps I wouldn't use tiktok if someone paid me to. I don't use the other social media platforms either. And I personally take every review with a grain of salt. But I'm that way about life in general.
So agree. Somebody's just made up a redundant term to re-brand the same long-established style of content that 109435462 other creators are already making.

Exactly! That’s why I’ve hated the trend for so long, the name of it is redundant lol so glad to see an influencer have the same view
Her clickbait title doesn't get on your nerves ?
@Jwalamukhi C T she literally explained why she thinks deinfluencing is stupid. Do you not know what clickbait is?
How is her title clickbait? Lol 🤦🏻♀️

It's been reminding me of the phases we went through as a group, too. It will be interesting to see what happens once they catch up with where we are now - where will they go next? Sociology scholars will have so much to look at with the Beauty Community in Early Internet Studies of the future 😂
The name doesn’t even make sense. They are still influencing people not to buy.
“TikTok is stuck in the hamster wheel of 2016” PREACH ANGIE
Well I'm way too old for Tik Tok I'm not here for it. And I'm late to the party for TH-cam. I love your channel, your honesty, humor, reviews. And I look at it like this, I'm a big girl I can decide for myself what to buy or not & I look to you & a few others for guidance. You do a great job. Thank you for all you do.
Angie coming out with all the facts as usual 👏 ❤
There always needs to be a gimmick to lure people in. Thanks for always speaking common sense with a sense of humor!
I love the Wayne Goss lippies! Would love to see you try more from him in the future :)
I use that Colourpop as a blush topper for the exact reason you stated. It has enough pigment that it’s not a highlight on me.
I enjoy your videos a ton! You’re so authentic. Thanks for that! Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
"We already have a word for that."
That foundation shade: you know how you usually have to add a drop of yellow to your foundations? This one could use a drop of red and a drop of white
Now that you made your announcement I’m noticing those orange handles!
Remember some of the people were young and not in the beauty community back in 2016. So, every thing is brand new and exciting to them.
I love watching your videos! I love that you say what you feel and don't mince words. ❤
I'm so in love with this HAIR 😍
THE ULTIMATE… BUG CATCHER… haha 😂 that’s why I love her! I wonder if the foundation was extra sticky because of the freeze primer beneath?
Good morning from Northern Minnesota have a wonderful day ❤
Good morning!
Yay! You're using the Gloss Gods palette! ✨️ It's so pretty!
I love heating and cooling products! I love both equally.
Ty for updating us on the Nyx!!!💕💕 Charlotte Holdcraft is a good deinfluencer!!
I really like the lip liner color!
Charlotte Holdcroft does a good job talking me out of buying things when she does her “you do not need that” series 😅
Good morning Angelica! I hope you're having a great vacation
I did, just got home yesterday! :D
Charlotte Holdcroft’s You Don't Need That series is pretty spot on.
I feel like you and Kelly Gooch do a good job of advising where to save our money and what’s worth the purchase.
Aso fair warning, I'm totally stealing the 'the worse thing since the Plague' from you Angie. Now it's part of my vocabulary XDDD
You have become 🪰🪰🪰 PAPER !!!! You made me laugh!!! Thank you Angelica!
Disturbing... maybe Tiktok is going to that point now 🤷♀️
Deinfluence IS influencing. You are still influencing others to not or stop buying a product. So I don't get it either. It's not different.
I did not know your cat is named Semla, how have I missed that? 😂 Great pet names all around ❤
You my Happy Clown Queen are awesome ❤
thank you so much for this video, angie!!! loveeee your makeup. btw, i’m also definitely a cool dog mom as well. 💕💕💕
I laughed so hard when you said "the TikTok kids" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“I have become flypaper” 😂 💀
I love hearing your thoughts on popular topics! have a wonderful day Angie!
Hi Angelica, I am sure you have said many times, but what sponge do you use? The finish it gives your skin is so lovely, thank you! 😊
Hey girl I just love your videos you are so so gorgeous u don’t even need to wear makeup ♥️ beautiful look today as always can u do a double cut crease sometime have a blessed day 💕💕💕💕☘️☘️☘️
I love your top!
tbh, decluttering content has been really good to quell my makeup thirst
I think de-influencing is really important as the value of being mindful about overconsumption is impactful to the way the environment and climate is effected. We need this generation to be more mindful about their purchases and the way they are disposing of all of the things they feel like they need to buy because they don't have as strong of media literacy growing up with TikTokers/TH-camrs constantly telling them "they need this".
oh yes, if it's used in the correct way, absolutely :)
@@AngelicaNyqvist Agree! Intent is important - it's easy to see which de-influencers have the right intention and which are attempting to grow into the very role they are critiquing
But that already existed before tiktok decided to make a new word for it, and a lot of the videos are just negative reviews
@@petra1995 I don't think you're watching the right creators! I don't find that to be the case at all in the people I see/follow on tiktok in this genre
@@lauroth Oh I don't have tiktok, I get all my tiktok second hand 😂
I think Jen Luvs Reviews is the best at this "de-influencing" thing.... She's been doing it for a very very long time....ps I wouldn't use tiktok if someone paid me to. I don't use the other social media platforms either. And I personally take every review with a grain of salt. But I'm that way about life in general.
Same
She's helping us not to buy crap 😊
I just heard of this term today so this is all new to me lol.
So agree. Somebody's just made up a redundant term to re-brand the same long-established style of content that 109435462 other creators are already making.
