You're right, you will have to remove the bolts holding the license plate mount in place then gently pry this panel off. This will reveal three upper bolts that hold the trunk lock in place. When you unscrew these you can push the lock into the trunk and feel inside for a metal rod. If you pull on this rod this should open the trunk. There is no need to break the license plant mount to do this, good luck.
Brotha that’s the same thing that happened to me, I had it charging and the cord was stuck in the lock mechanism is why it wouldn’t open. I got lucky I guess and twisted the key and pushed just the right way and it popped open.
Please persevere with the mechanical key for a bit longer. They are really finnicky to use. When you insert it you should only turn it about one eighth of a turn and not through 90 degrees (quarter turn). It has to be really precise and whenever I have to resort to the mechanical key I have to keep trying and trying until I get it just right. One thing is for sure and that is it will not work with a quarter turn and sometimes it feels like I have not even turned it a as much as one eighth before it engages when you push on it. I also try it in both directions but cannot remember which way works in the end. Good luck!!!
It seems as if it’s the actuator by the trunk I had a similar issue on a w220 02 s500 I ended up replacing the whole trunk since I ended up cracking on the corner on the trunk mid trim, I got lucky the car I got it off was the same color (black) in nice shape and it popped open so in my case the actuator being plastic was cracked where when I hit the trunk button I’d hear a hiss on the old one there 2 actuator’s the left side was bad, but my trunk isn’t fully electronic most w215s like my 04 cl500 is fully electronic where it opens and shuts by the button so it maybe different, worst come worst If I had to do it all again I’d probably break a rear tail light, since the trunk piece and painting would be way more than replacing the taillight, once you can gain access to the trunk release and in hopes it pops, just fyi it was a lot of work the route I took on the s class replacing the whole trunk lid was definitely time consuming lol, but hopefully this is some help you you
Thank you for that detailed explanation. I fortunately got it open. That’s very true….you have to calculate which is less costly. I ended up drilling three holes under the license light area to find the three screws that hold the actuator to the lid. Once removed out of the way internally, I found the lever to manually release it.

I bought an 04 cl500 sport package, the same color as your cl55 wide body, which is so phenomenal! Super clean in exception of the abc suspension, it ran and drove up until I ended up doing a abc flush it was fine after the flush until 200 miles or so all of sudden I got the dreaded abc light while driving 1 day the car was still up, so I drove home and connected my youcanic scanner to do a rodeo test as soon as I initiated the test I heard a loud thump, I got out the car seen oil everywhere and also the plastic cover and a ruptured line on the left side of the vehicle the line that runs from the tandum pump to the rear valve block, and all of sudden my cars dropped on all 4 corners. Long story short I ordered some yellowspeed coil overs, thanks to your suggestion and positive feedback on them is why I’m going that route now! I haven’t yet installed, I need to still order the p/s pump, I can’t wait to enjoy my cl again!

@@goldelementautoworks I bought it knowing it had the abc issue, when I brought it home I topped it off with some hydraulic fluid hoping it was something small maybe just a top off lol then proceeded to do a rodeo test right as soon as I initiated the test I herd a loud bang and I got out the car to realize the pressure blew the plastic panel on the drivers side to the ground and I seen fluid which was the line on the drivers side was ruptured, I was thinking of replacing the line but then I thought to my self even if I replace the $300 line what other pricey components might be compromised or how much will I have to throw in the future so I decided to go the coil over route instead thanks to your videos 🙏 but the rest of the car is clean I drove it to make sure it is good drive train wise and mechanically it’s solid the cars fresh I then decided to tow it I was scared of cracking the oil pan, I picked her up for a great deal! And lol do you have some extra coil overs fs?

That key and fob must not be the original key to the car. may be a reprogrammed key. Once you get it opened have a new key cut for the lock.
