I genuinely can’t help but believe that they saw an opportunity to take a black female icon’s throne in 2004 and that’s exactly what they did. Most Gen Z have no idea of Janet Jackson’s influence, it’s wild.

I gotta say, my initial reaction was "Wait, why are you reviewing a Janet album? That's so random" but dammit you have a point here. I remember as a kid in the late 90s, Janet was HUGE. As talked about as her brother if not more, because she was more relevant at the time than Michael. I knew who she was way before i knew about Prince for example. And listening to her music now is crazy nostalgic, even the early 2000's stuff because the radio stopped playing her music and people (me included) forgot about her. But she deserves as much acclaim as Madonna.

@@reinemazidath5466 Wow. Chill out. I was simply talking from my own memory, i remember hearing bit more Janet in late 90s and early 00s than Michael, or at least the same amount. I wasn't even saying who was better. To be completely honest, i don't have such strong opinions about either, both have made some stuff i love but i'm not that huge of a fan i would care to argue too much.
@@reinemazidath5466 While Janet was never a bigger star then Michael (no one was) she was more relevant in the 90s then Michael (in the states at least) especially the late 90s. This isn't just album sales, in the 90s Janet was everywhere, tv, music, movies. Michael on the other hand would pop up when it was time to release his album and tour. Michael was also in his mid to late 30s trying to start a family while Janet was in her mid to late 20s. Also when looking at album sales, while she couldn't complete worldwide ,in the states she sold almost as well him.

Janet wasn't a crazy 'vocalist', but she had such a signature vocal and was pretty much the total package. She was a super sexy crooner, with all the moves. And the Velvet Rope tour was one of the biggest of all time, even had its own HBO special. I guess Janet was one of those artists you had to be there for.
She's not a vocalist, but she's a good singer. She knows how to control her voice, she knows all of the weakness and strenght

No, stop comparing the two. MJ was more successful for a reason. In the 90's he had “Remember The Time”, “In The Closet”, “Jam”, “Heal The World”, “Ghosts”, “Earth Song” and so much more. Janet is one of the greatest but MJ IS the greatest.
This album saved my life. She gave us young boys who were in our teens, questioning who we were, this album let us know that we were not alone. She let us know that she too has moments of darkness. She let us know that it would get better. This album inspired TLC’s Fan Mail. Britney’s “In The Zone.” And Christina Aguilera’s “Stripped.”

The Velvet Rope is not only my favorite Janet album. Seriously, I still have my original copy of the CD from the day it was released, my freshman year of college; this album STAYS in my car and has been enjoyed countless times over the past 20+ years. It is PERFECT.

Janet Jackson is one of the most trailblazing, influential, and versatile pop stars of all time. It's so sad how underappreciated she is.
I remember watching that "Go Deep" video and feeling... things.
Also, when I hear the title of the album, I think about the billboard controversy. There was apparently a billboard for her Velvet Rope tour where she wasn't scantily clad, but had some cleavage going on, and it had to come down because it was causing wrecks.

god, thank you for reviewing this fantastic album melon. TVR is full of some of the most sweetest, saddest, catchiest and expressive pop and R&B songs of the 1990s yet it continually goes underappreciated for some reason.

One of my favorite albums. Janet is not fame hungry. She’s always kept a low profile which is why she’s not as talked about as others. Superbowl aside, she was never controversial.
Janet was the reason I became a dancer. The very first album I ever received was her 1989's Rhythm Nation. This album is a true retrospection of an authentic artist. Lyrics, beats, melodies, messages it send to the world. Just a really great piece in my collection as a HUGE Janet appreciator but it should be in everyone's collection. JANET & HER LEGACY CAN NEVER BE CANCELED ♥️

The second I saw the cover I knew I would love it and this was before was an ultimate Janet stan. THANK YOU for saying her Tonight's the Night is better I tell everyone and my mother that same thing. Impeccable review. This album is absolute perfection. I'll never forgive society and the media ignoring the perfection that Janet's music has by caring about one misstep that was not even her fault (Super Bowl). Thank you Anthony.

Honestly, Janets “The Velvet Rope”, Madonnas “Ray Of Light” and Lauryn Hills “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” are a perfect trilogy of albums by female artists that were both groundbreaking and personal. Janet sang about Remembering a Loved One who’s Passed, Self Esteem, Domestic Abuse, Homophobia, Mental Illness, and Sexuality. Madonna sang about The Struggles of Fame, Freedom, Motherhood, Religion, Loss and Mortality while Lauryn Sings(and Raps) about Family, Motherhood, Feminism, Greed, Racism, God, and Love. All 3 albums are groundbreaking and important and pretty experimental with all 3 albums(in total) mixing in different genres such as Pop, R&B, Techno, Electronica, Rock, Soul, Dance, Gospel, Funk and Many other genres together. Even if you can’t compare Lauryn to Madonna and Janet since the latter 2 were more successful and Contributed more in the long run, the 3 albums are massively to influential and groundbreaking for both how personal and how they were made.
I recently started listening to this album and like??? it's a masterpiece, point blank. it's insane how it's overlooked and underappreciated as it is. everyone should hear it. they need to hear it.

I Get Lonely is my favorite Janet song and this album is legendary.
This was great. I've always preferred Janet over Michael, and I find that her music was more complex and intricate than that of her brother's (no shade on MJ though). It's a travesty that Janet isn't as remembered today. I think after Michael died, people just completely forgot about Janet and her legacy to popular music.
I would love to see a review on Madonna's "Ray of Light". I feel like Madonna goes under appreciated as a songwriter and as a vocalist, and this album serves as her magnum opus in both areas. The album played a big role in bringing electronica and dance music to the mainstream and its influence can still be heard today.

I had a lot of self esteem issues growing up, and this record helped me to make sense of it all, and embrace my own uniqueness. I'm forever grateful and will always be inspired by this record.

I love every inch of it. It’s my favorite album of and by Janet Jackson. I discovered it about 3 / 4 years ago. It’s rare for me to listen to an album from beginning to end; especially in this day and age. I live for the messages, the production and the vocals. Classik !!!! And that’s on a period.

The velvet rope definitely set a high bar in the music industry for quality in artistry. It’s a genius album.
This is the first album that I heard that I related to on a deeply personal level. I was 17 and closeted, and to hear someone who had also felt depression and cared about LGBTQIA+ issues meant the world to me. Not my favourite Janet album, but the most meaningful to me and more and more so 11 years after I first heard it.
Artistically this is one of Janet's best albums. My favorite tracks are what about and Got Till It's Gone a catchphrase I still use today.

Taken from FORBES: One person who was upset at having missed the event (which would go on to be one of the biggest of the year) was Jawed Karim, who at the time was working for PayPal. To combat this, he and his friends Steve Chen and Chad Hurley began working on code for a site where people could upload their own content. Rhythm Nation and Janet albums were pretty damn big back then. I remember Velvet Rope coming out but most people i knew kind of let it pass them by, but she had some good songs on it.
usa´s taste is not particularly good (haha)... this album made her a global superstar for the first time I´d say. In Spain, my country, the radios played all the singles; this had not happened before with her previous releases. I can assume that the rest happened in europe and other markets... Also something similar could be said about mariah´s butterfly, michael jackson´s history or madonna´s ray of light. Global markets kept those records sales healthy in spite of usa´s "drop". They sold a lot but less in usa with IMO their best albums, that´s what I mean.
Rhythm Nation is timeless. That album is a masterpiece. But I worshipped Janet album with If.... that song omg. I love VR as well. It was more sexy & experimental. I love Madonna and Michael but Janet was always The One for me..... her music just doesn’t age or get old. I mean Again or Love will Never Do Without u could be hits now.

This is art. Got til its Gone was the first single and seemed too subtle at first, but really grew on you and emerged as as an all-time fave track after a few spins. The concept, the artwork, tracks like What About, You, the title track, and others really were all thought-provoking, outstanding and timeless. Sales for the album were down compared to her past projects. However, in hindsight, all the big divas of the era experienced similar diminishing returns. Therefore, the reception to the project might simply have been affected by diva-fatigue at the time. But what an album! I envy anyone who discovers it now for the first time.

Also rhythm nation had 7 top 10 hits while Janet had 6 and control 5. It’s amazing how the whole super bowl backlash and dirty people behind the scenes have downplayed her career:

The first single from the album was released in 1989 Miss You Much which went number one. 3 more singles went number one between 89-91 the last one being Love Will Never Do Without You which went number one in 1991. 3 more songs went to number two on the charts between 89-90. Thus 7 Top 5 Billboard Hot 100 Hits. Over the spans of 3 years. Making her the only artist with 3 number one hits from the same album in three different calendar years.

Janet knew how to make albums. She was one of a few pop/R&B acts who mastered the craft of the album and she loved her interludes. Velvet Rope could’ve been a pop record full of Together Again’s but she made a classic record
My parents would play this all the time. As most do, I resisted a lot of my folks musical preferences. However, there was no resisting this. I completely forgot about it. This review has me revisiting. Wow, this truly is incredible.

I only just listened to this album and I felt that she is so influential. So much so, all we remember is the 04 fuck up. When you listen to this album you begin to see where and why we have our current state of mind in rnb, I forever credit her for the vibe in music.
Ever since her induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame people have once again started to recognize what a tremendous artist she was and is and how impactful and influential her music has been. Im just happy that she is finally receiving her flowers while she is still alive. Great review

The Velvet Rope is my favorite album of all times. It's so rich, so intimate, so well done. Janet, Jimmy and Terry really took their time to create a master piece. This album is one of the best albums of the music history and one of the best albums of the 90's according to Rolling Stones. Good to mention that prior to its release, she renegotiated her contract with Virgin for US$80 million, the largest recording contract in history at that time.

Besides being a music legend she’s an amazing example of consistency. what you said about the music industry conspiracy on erasing her legacy isn’t far from the truth, it was revealed that the CEO of CBS, who now is going through sexual misconduct accusations, became obsessed with destroying her career. He made MTV, VH1 and everything VIACOM owned stop playing her music and music videos back then.
Even if after All For You her three following albums weren’t near as solid as her earlier material, they would have been way bigger without this, Discipline even manage to go #1 with the blacklisting still going on hard.
Luckily it seems it washed away by the time she released Unbreakable and platforms are slowly giving Janet the respect she always deserved as a music icon.
Control and Rhythm Nation are incredible too but I'm glad you recognize (like everyone should) her legacy and her talent. She's a visionnary and she's an avant gardiste.

Thank you for this review, I listened to the album start to end based on this review and I cannot get over how good this LP is!! It is like a surreal introduction to all the smooth sounds being created in the underground music scene in the 90s.
This album is just insane a classic, now when I first purchase the album in october 97 I didn't like it. Because it wasn't the happy go lucky Janet. The songs were dark, the vibe was so different than her Previous albums. But after a few listens I was draw in. This record is fire and Janet is Definitely one of the Pioneer artist of the Eighties and nineties.. she is so under rated. I think Unfortunately it's gonna be one of those things we won't really appreciate her blueprint until she is gone. If it wasn't for albums like RN,Janet and TVR this newer Artist Wouldn't exist. The Velvet Rope is by far on of the best albums of all time.

The singles from The Velvet Rope are great, but the album tracks really seal the deal for me! In my opinion, songs like What About, Anything, Tonight's The Night, and Empty are the strongest parts and my favorites! Thank you for reviewing

Janet’s Velvet Rope album is one of the best and most influential albums of its time. I can’t even just call it R&B because this album has so many layers and genres blended to perfection. She mastered this album and she is such a musical ICON! I HATE what they did to her after the Super Bowl! Janet is literally a living legend and was the most famous woman in the world at a certain time. She is just now getting her flowers again! I do appreciate artists that you mention like Britney or even Beyoncé credit her as a major influence for them. Her legendary status can’t be denied, I don’t care what the right conservatives in media do!
