In utero was my first nirvana album I bought, it is one of my favorite albums. I might get hate but I like in utero more than nevermind I do like nevermind but in utero is my personal favorite.
Personally I consider this album the most creative and artistic album from Nirvana. It feels musically free and creative in especially the guitar works. I feel it has the best lyrics out of all their tracks.
I'm not the best at critiques, but I enjoyed listening to In Utero moreso than I did with Nevermind. I still consider both of them two of the best albums of all time.
I was in grade 8 in 1994 (in Australia). The day after Kurt killed himself I went to school and the atmosphere was like a kid at my school had killed himself. Kurt and Nirvana were so important. How do I convince you?
As someone who just graduated year 8 in Australia, I think I’m the only one I know that knows of nirvana as anything other than smells like teen spirit and a clothing brand.
I was 9 years old and remember it was a big deal back then. Over the years other musicians have committed suicide like Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell but their deaths didn’t have such a large impact like Cobain. Could be representative of how much society has changed and that nowadays there really is no voice of a generation since people just stream music and listen to various artists. Music does not connect as many people as it used to.
I was only 7 years old when it happened. I remember waking up before school and my 3 older sisters were crying. The man who sold the world played in the car on the way to school, then I heard my friends older brother practicing it on his guitar after school. This was the first time I can remember perceiving music to be more than just sound. The universal emotion of it all was quite something to feel at such a young age, but I’m really glad I have that memory. R.I.P. Kurt

I totally agree.Nevermind kind of gets bashed because it has been played so much over the years. But if you sit and listen to it front to back,it’s a masterpiece! In Utero is equally as great just a lot darker so many people didn’t get it!
Agree i cant seperate them, they are both very different both perfect timeless albums. People just put down Nevermind because its more poppy and popular but front to back its a perfect album. Then you have In-Uetro that is the perfect follow up, its heavy, raw but full of texture and has so much variety on it. IMHO Nevermind is like Nirvana channeling the Pixies and In-Uetro is like then channeling the Melvins.
yes compared to nevermind this album still continues to be underrated, even though its most likely their second most popular album...this album just seems more Kurt
I can’t believe just the story of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, crazy how the audience made the artist’s life unbearable in a way I mean it was so much more though
This has to be the most "raw" album I've ever heard. Definitely a 10/10 for me. Even the lazy songs like tourrete's are fun to listen to. Kurt Cobain is one of the greatest songwriter of all time.
Nirvana and NWA had the same impact to each of their genres. NWA changed the hip hop/rap genre and popularizing gangsta rap, and Nirvana changed the rock and roll genre by popularizing grunge and thus created 90's music. In my opinion the best Era of music (My Opinion!)
Jonathan Rivera 1980-1995 were the best 15 years of music ever. With so many creation of new genres of music that I don't think will be achieved again.
I wouldn't say so. NWA revolutionized the genre and it went on to become the music of the 21st century so far while punk rock, metal and rock kinda went underground again.
It's in my top 3. I've never heard as intense and truly heavy song as this. It's really disturbed and goes to some deep places. Tool's music is actually the closest thing I can think of to this track. But it's like if you hit a Tool song with a sledgehammer and exposed its innards all over the place.
Not trying to be a picky jackass, just throwing this in there; "Dumb" was actually very straightforward with its lyrics. Kurt said that he wanted to write more songs like it because it was a happier song and he was tired of writing sad, angry stuff. I believe once or twice he said it was his favorite song on the album because of this reason.
I’m a bit cynical with ‘dumb’, just hearing myself repeat, “I think I’m dumb” over and over seems like Kurt’s musical ‘why are you hitting yourself’. It always makes me laugh.
RFus is one of mine too, but I prefer their weirder less commercial songs. They could've been a better band had they continued making experimental noise rock like stuff on incesticide.. and thrown in a few like all apolagies, dumb, come as you are
Great review, wish you would've talked more about Serve The Servants though. The first line on the entire album "Teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old." Completely sets the tone of the album I think.
PLEASE do Alice in Chains. I feel like they're a bit overlooked compared to the other bands that came out around their time. A review of Jar of Flies or Dirt would be awesome.
id love to see what he has to say on tripod, like that record is just haunting with every and any thing about it that gives it the feel of in utero, the final hours
@@kendahlc.7886 "Over Now" is such a bittersweet song. Upbeat but still a hint of sadness especially knowing what would come afterward. Even the name itself is foreshadowing the end of AIC with Layne Staley.
Oh my goodness I love Jar of Flies so much. I love Alice in Chains but I can honestly take or leave their catalog, except for that EP. It gets me real starry eyed.
I think they are the *best* grunge act that was... I think it's ideally raw and heroin despair lingers heavy in AIC's catalog that doesn't come through with many of the other big grunge acts. Soundgarden had the "best" vocals, but n not the whole grunge label fits into all the music... Nirvana was amazing and popularised the genre so legendary but actually the content is average when compared to AIC etc
The sound of this album, the production, is really awesome...especially the drum sound. It creates a special atmosphere that I haven´t found anywhere else since then.
As unique and special as this album is and sounds, a big part of that “sound” is definitely due to Albini’s studio approach, Rid of Me by Pj Harvey, Surfer Rosa by Pixies and other albums with Steve producing get a similar sonic aesthetic, luckily they all still sound unique.
+MegaCrasherMusic Really what songs do you think are weaker? I always really loved the album but also always thought only stumbleine and tales of a scorched earth were kinda weak. I'm interested to hear your opinion though
IMO this album is just one giant cry for help from a man who has no one around him who knows how to. The whole album is so dark, so painful. He even plainly screams out "Rape me...waste me, do it and do it again" to the people around him using his health and well-being for money and fame. Then on other tracks he just flat out tells you he's numb and can't even feel sad (Frances Farmer). This is by far the realest, darkest album I've ever heard. It's a sonic cry for help and it blows my mind this guy could be screaming out in pain this loudly and still be getting whored out by the seemingly oblivious corporate rock pimps. It's very...disillusioning. Fact: The last single on In Utero released was Pennyroyal Tea. The B-side? "I Hate Myself and Want to Die."
A lot of bands make songs like that without being quite so emotionally damaged that they're going to shoot themselves. It's hard to discern which band is making songs that are actually a cry for help and which bands are writing songs like that simply because they know how to do write and market them. Nirvana being as big as it was made it incredibly hard to tell if it was actually a cry for help or just occupying their raw, emotional niche, just like Linkin Park's case after them: how many of their songs were a cry for help and how many were like that because it was what they knew how to make?
Jason Oliver Kurt was being sarcastic rape me was an anti rape song and I hate myself and I want to die was a sort of diss at people who tried to put too much meaning into their songs yes he was suicidal but I feel like this album wasn’t a cry for help
Kurt wrote "Rape Me" sometime before Nirvana exploded--meaning that it was written way before his trouble with the media. It's not written about him. It's literally just meant to be a blunt anti-rape song. Also, he stated that In Utero wasn't a very personal album. Obviously, it's quite easy to project a lot of the themes onto Kurt, given what he was going through, but they weren't actually written about him. He, on a personal level, probably projected the way that he felt during the writing process, since that's quite a natural thing for a songwriter to do, but the songs aren't based on him, per se. It's interesting, because I was watching an interview with Thom Yorke, and he was saying that by the time they were writing and recording Kid A, his songwriting was becoming less and less about him. But, again, when you're writing stuff that sounds so personal, but isn't about you, you're still going to be drawing emphasis from your own personal experiences and feelings. There's going to be some relation or connection with you, somehow, somewhere. So, it kind of turns into your own interpretation of what is supposed to be happening in the song, whether it's written about someone in particular or not. I think that's where Kurt was coming from when discussing many of the lyrics of this album. Personally, I'm only concluding that In Utero isn't a cry for help because Kurt said so.
I think about half of the songs are personal. Frances Farmer in no way is about him, it's about Frances Farmer. The only one that I'm truly disturbed by (in a good way) is Milk It. That song is the most creative form of self-loathing I've ever heard. Instead of using lyrics that are obviously about depression and addiction (Alice in Chains' Dirt comes to mind, and I love that album) he uses a metaphor of a virus and parasite using him as a host. It's too clever and disturbingly poetic to even make me sad. I could see how this album is a downer for a lot of people, but I think Kurt was able to turn something that would normally be sad into something clever and witty and entertaining. I think he probably amused himself to write lyrics as disturbing as those instead of saying outright that he's depressed.
The song ''Scentless Apprentice'' has to be the best on the album. The opening is classic. Super good. It pumps me up every time. Great drum beat and then those screechy guitars.
I get the same thing, lately, not listening to Nirvana so much. I'm one of the biggest Nirvana fans for many reasons, but just can't listen to them so much, anymore, just for the simple fact that I've heard the albums so many fucking times over the years.
xxoxia that’s an issue I had with this album as well, I love this album to death and heard it for a year straight and when I bought it on vinyl I rarely picked it up and haven’t touched it in a good couple of months. The optimistic side of me is guessing that I’m gonna pick this record up in the future and get memories and be able to experience the music and the feelings I felt at the time.
Love In Utero. It's really hard for me to pick a favorite Nirvana album as I love them all, but if I could only listen to one Nirvana studio album for the rest of my life, In Utero would be it. It's got everything Nirvana was about on one album. You have the heaviness on songs like Scentless Apprentice and Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle. The catchy hooks and riffs on songs like Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me and All Apologies. Songs that can translate played electric or acoustic like Pennyroyal Tea Also the band's more experimental side on songs like Milk It and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. It's a dynamic album that is multi dimensional. Was the last album I bought on cassette tape before getting a cd player back in the day too lol.
I wonder if you would feel the same way if Nevermind hadn't been played to death. I currently prefer Utero as well but I think it's because that album has been a slow burn for me rather than the never ending and intense repeat playing of Nevermind.
According to Kurt, most of the lyrics were not about his own life. Maybe you didn't know, or maybe you just don't believe him. Either way, they do have a dreary character about them that says something about his state of mind, so perhaps they were an accidental self-portrait.
It started as a jam in the studio and they all wrote a bit of it. Go watch Krist Noveselic talk about it. Kurt said it himself during one interview. The Scentless Apprentice Rehearsal demo in Rio is the one that started it. Someone (Dave I think) said "I have this riff like~" and the rest is history.
@@anonymoususer2756 As a guy that mostly listens to hiphop, AIC & Soundgarden were the 2 bands that got me into rock music. I still play Superunknown every month or so. For some reason, I couldnt understand why In Utero is regarded as one of the best rock albums of the 90's among critics.
Eye Control Superunknown is amazing. I love Head Down, Limo Wreck, 4th Of July and Like Suicide the most. Shame it never got the recognition Nevermind did because it’s so much better.

No matter what Nirvana will always be my favorite band. I love this album so much. Nirvana and In Utero especially is what made me want to be a guitarist and bassist and eventually would like to get a drumset in the near future. :)
Such a great reply to "Nevermind", both brilliant in their own ways. The band definitely seemed to push for a more challenging listening experience with "In Utero", but Kurt's pop sensibility still shines in a myriad of ways. "All Apologies" is such a gorgeous swam song from Kurt, it's a tough album to listen to because of moments like that. Nirvana could have done so much in the future, and easily could have broken through the "grunge" scene, and made something new.
Wow I was really expecting to get pissed off listening to this thinking it would be another over-opinionized critique without any true knowledge or facts of what you're saying. But I actually really enjoyed hearing what you have to say about Nirvana and their style and just music in general. It's nice to listen to someone who actually shares a genuine expression of music. So thank you for that! Keep it up! I will be listening to more of your videos!
Nirvana were my gateway to underground music. I had a huge Nirvana phase back in middle school and thanks to Kurt being so vocal and upfront about his influences I was able to discover bands like Sonic Youth, Pixies, and the Stooges. This album in particular opened me up to more abrasive sounds and introduced me to the name Steve Albini. Nirvana may have not been as original as some people give them credit for, but they did write fantastic songs that really hold up and are a great introduction to the less mainstream side of rock music. To anyone who complains about them being overrated or overexposed: nobody would've agreed with you more than Kurt Cobain.
I dig what you were saying about letting the record sit. I too revisited it a while ago and I couldn't help be blown away after 20 some years, thinking there might never be anything this raw and good.
Totally, I think this is especially apparent in Milk It because instead of just saying he's depressed and addicted he uses a metaphor of a parasite using him as a host. It's honestly too clever to be sad about, it's just entertaining. It was probably more amusing and gratifying for him to write about his struggles in a wittier way.
As a guy who appreciates Nirvana, without ever having been a fan, I must say this is their golden album. Holds up so much better than their other records. It's so harsh and entertaining, that it just stands the test of time very well. Albinis drumsound production took the band to new heights. VERY good music :)
I think that if Kurt Cobain didn't killed himself and Nirvana would've existed for a longer period and they would've released more albums it would've gone 2 ways: 1. Either every single new album would've been very successful 2. They would've flopped massively and maybe one or two new albums would've been very good (Sorry for the bad English, I don't know if I used the tenses correctly 😭)
I absolutely agree. Nevermind I think is their worst album, and I HATE Smells Like Teen Spirit and see it only as a necessary nuisance that had to be a hit in order for Nirvana to become big.
Rape Me was written earlier in their career. A good few were, Kurt was so prolific a songwriter, he had 30 tracks down before they got signed to Geffen.
Admittedly I typically don't enjoy your reviews (but I keep coming back every now and then for some reason) but this was great. A mature analysis of a dark album.
Recently finally dipped into pixies... wow. For 1986? That sound? I was blown away. They were like aliens to what / as a 90’s baby, born in 87 ‘s - perception I had “on THE 80’s” 🤷🏻♂️
Great review, thanks. Although, re: Rape Me, I've always understood that the lyrics are not about literally asking to be raped (or otherwise violated) but is supposed to condemn or hold a mirror to the rapist. There is self deprecation/hatred, yes, but it's more about empathy for the victim. The lyrics, like many on this record, I believe, obliquely reference Kurt's sense of having his privacy invaded by fame (and specifically the damning Vanity Fair article about Kurt and Courtney's perceived family dysfunction)
Noir Spectre Actually, Kurt confirmed MANY times that it's about rape. This song was supposed to be very blunt towards the subject because whenever he writes a song similar to this, people connect it to his personal life and end up badly interpreting it. he even talked about how some people tried to say that this song is about him talking about the media. he denied this meaning and simply said it's about rape (and what the previous commenter said as well)
Kurt wrote this song and all the others making them have diff meanings to diff people..Thats what artists do..At the end of the day, they are just words that he thought sounded good on top of the music.
@@elizaidatejeda7102kurt lied often about his lyrics publicly tbh like the song definitely is dual meaning, and the "my favorite inside source/i kiss your open sores" confirms it lmao. its about kurts thoughts about the media and about big sweaty hairy macho man...that rape
12:00 Kurt truly was a lyrical genius. [VERSE] What am I supposed to write What am I supposed to do What am I supposed to say I feel like I'm just a dancing monkey for you guys and I'm just this puppet up here for your entertainment [CHORUS]
I have been digging this band and rest of seattle era for almost 26 yrs, i don't think any era will have an impact on me as grunge did. Soundgarden, AIC, Nirvana defined my teens and still is my go to music. ❤❤ They live on in our hearts 🤘
dumb is one of my favorites songs of all time, the simplicity of the chords and vocals made by Kurt, sticking together with the sadness of the lyrics is something very very touchy
This album and Earl Sweatshirt's "I don't like shit, I don't go outside" are the most immersive musical dives into depression. This album in particular, kept me from killing myself in 2011. Knowing that this was a common issue gave me perspective. The lyrics were honest and were a spotlight on what was going to happen to Kurt. The album starts with the line "Teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old." He was 25 when he wrote that. It was raw and spoke the truths of addiction, loneliness even in popularity and the affect depression can have on your mind and body.
The fact that the Anthony Fantano of the next generation will have to do a classic review of Pink Season and i might not live to see that day happen, keeps me up at night.

R.I.P. Kurt
no one talked about it in my grade school. i was in 8th grade as well. when i went to smart camp at a university 3 hours away during the summer, i found out the hard way. it was embarrassing. i was very sheltered i guess.

This album and Nevermind are 10/10 for me. Both tied.
BluReviews In Utero WAYYY better than Nevermind. Nevermind really catchy tho lol
I totally agree.Nevermind kind of gets bashed because it has been played so much over the years. But if you sit and listen to it front to back,it’s a masterpiece! In Utero is equally as great just a lot darker so many people didn’t get it!
I always liked bleach the most
Bleach has the best riffs
Nevermind is the catchiest
In utero best lyrics and grungeness
Agree i cant seperate them, they are both very different both perfect timeless albums.
People just put down Nevermind because its more poppy and popular but front to back its a perfect album.
Then you have In-Uetro that is the perfect follow up, its heavy, raw but full of texture and has so much variety on it.
IMHO Nevermind is like Nirvana channeling the Pixies and In-Uetro is like then channeling the Melvins.
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle is the best from this.

This has to be the most "raw" album I've ever heard. Definitely a 10/10 for me. Even the lazy songs like tourrete's are fun to listen to. Kurt Cobain is one of the greatest songwriter of all time.
You think In Utero is raw? Listen to Bleach.
Spooky mtn dew Bleach is so cut-throat. Kurts terrible solos in some songs are so enjoyable. It's so bad it's genius. Love that album

Milk it is the best Nirvana song. Left wing right wing broken wing. Never gets old.
It's in my top 3. I've never heard as intense and truly heavy song as this. It's really disturbed and goes to some deep places. Tool's music is actually the closest thing I can think of to this track. But it's like if you hit a Tool song with a sledgehammer and exposed its innards all over the place.
Pretty accurate description tbh
Yes.
Lost eyesight I'm on your side
Milk it on in utero and beeswax and Mexican seafood on incesticide are in my top 5.
I think sliver and mollys lips are the most up beat songs kurt wrote

Great review, wish you would've talked more about Serve The Servants though. The first line on the entire album "Teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old." Completely sets the tone of the album I think.

id love to see what he has to say on tripod, like that record is just haunting with every and any thing about it that gives it the feel of in utero, the final hours
@@kendahlc.7886
"Over Now" is such a bittersweet song. Upbeat but still a hint of sadness especially knowing what would come afterward. Even the name itself is foreshadowing the end of AIC with Layne Staley.
They’re not overlooked at all.
Hey Anthony, this is seriously the best Nirvana review I have ever heard yet man. Seriously. Hit the nail on the head. Good job my dude!
The sound of this album, the production, is really awesome...especially the drum sound. It creates a special atmosphere that I haven´t found anywhere else since then.
I just said this yesterday. In Utero has a very specific feel to it. Just let Serve the Servants open up it all comes flooding back.
That loud albini drum sound is also on surfer rosa by the pixies, you prolly already know that record though

@@SpiralDream yet here you are
IMO this album is just one giant cry for help from a man who has no one around him who knows how to.
The B-side? "I Hate Myself and Want to Die."
no
A lot of bands make songs like that without being quite so emotionally damaged that they're going to shoot themselves.

I know this comment is old, but kurt honestly often down played his own lyrics, so knowing do they have a reason or not is kind of impossible

The riff.

I never knew a clothing brand could make an album!

Sometimes "very good music" is about the only thing you can say that does an album like this justice
I think that if Kurt Cobain didn't killed himself and Nirvana would've existed for a longer period and they would've released more albums it would've gone 2 ways:
1. Either every single new album would've been very successful
2. They would've flopped massively and maybe one or two new albums would've been very good
(Sorry for the bad English, I don't know if I used the tenses correctly 😭)

Not saying that these songs have no meaning to him..But its possible that they can have more than one meaning.

Head Down tho
Subhash x Record Head Down, Limo Wreck and 4th Of July.
One of the rawest, most emotionally-inducing albums of the 90s. This is even better than Nevermind imo
