- When visiting the Andes mountains of Southern Ecuador, be sure to plan a day trip to Saraguro. Half way between Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage City, and Loja, one of Ecuador’s oldest colonial cities and the last urban stop before entering Northern Peru, Saraguro is an off-the-beaten-path gem just waiting for you to discover.

Known for its four annual festivals, Pawkar Raymi, Inti Raymi, Killa Raymi, and Kapak Raymi, Saraguro celebrates the celestial and terrestrial divine in a colorful profusion of ceremonies, parades, dance, Andean music, and unique local cuisine which ranges from homemade fare to the food inventions of Michelin trained chefs. Visitors will not want to miss tasting the famous artisanal cheeses made from milk of local dairy herds and sheep flocks and wash it down with local “chicha” agave ‘baby beer’.
