Do what your heart tells you. I actually sold my car and switched to cycling for my primary form of transportation. I got fed up with the outrageous tickets, the traffic courts/judges (which only provide a summary judgement to extract money or make you work for the state), the cops pulling you over and doing unnecessary searches (just for a little crack in my windshield). Mind you I had a pretty clean driving record. Cycling provides me with a much greater feeling of liberty than driving a car.
I recall Quicksilver. The 80's was when I first started bike couriering in Vancouver. After coming back, off and on, over the years, I found myself still couriering up until the middle of the last decade, in Calgary.
point taken on moustaches. Denim though was in widespread use cowboy time, at least in back to the future, and that proves everything. Timemachines, can't argue with 'em.
yep. the free-wheel mechanism was only invented in the 70's where they quickly exploded in popularity, before then fixies were popular. Then mountain-bikes exploded when car-culture took over the streets in the 80's/90's. Fixed gear bikes represent a return to a time when bicycles were at home on the road, the re-popularization of them is arguably because people want to be able to commute/ride a bike on the street. Sociology student as well as an ardent lover of bike culture.
@@DJASHLOFT supercool man ... keep it going. When my legs start going weak that I cannot climb hills, it will be ebike time for me. But until I'm still able, no ebikes 😁🤘
i was thinking the same thing...then the old man says at the end "Alight you guys, get back to work" like deliveries can wait til all the grab-ass is over!
sometimes I drive (my wife owns a car!), but I think organizing my life to be able to commute on a bike as much as possible is a far better approach. 'Carless' since 2005 and not willing to get back.
what is this film? my mind is blown i know of people who ride as couriers with similar bikes/gear ratios, although these are obviously purpose built for tricks. kudos to the people who actually performed the stunts, bacon is impressed!
haha, my dad saw kids ridding fixies when he was driving me to school, hes like hahah thats how you guys ride fixies? go watch quicksilver then get back to me. haha and here i am
21 in a month, and my lady and I ride around together. Most of my friends ride, almost no one I know drives. Keep them wheels spinning until you find people who can keep up with you.
@lvleph Circus bikes are "Fixies", "Fixed Gear", "Track Bikes", whatever you wish to call them. They are just granny geared. All I'm saying is that in the 80's people were riding fixed-geared bikes and pointing out that this new fad of people riding seriously over-colored bikes with fixed gears isn't some original new concept. Maybe the blinding colors are, but fixed geared bikes are far from new.
It's a type of performance biking, they ride very specialist fixed gears, and it's useful for them to have the handlebars on upside down. No one who uses their bike for covering distance would do that.
@gooochino The ones that have the petals continuously moving as they are doing tricks are fixed. The other ones just look like single speeds as they are able to coast.
I think a car is kind of a necesity nowadays. Maybe you could buy your car, have it there for dating or emergency cases and such, but you are going to still be using your bike for everything else man. I don't understand why people have to make a choice between the two of them.
I wish that I had never stopped riding. I had to sell my bike for rent money and haven't gotten one since. My health has majorly depleeted and now I spend my time wishing I was riding again. Unfortunately, now I'm a student, I can't afford another downhill bike, so I'm going to have to settle for somethign cheaper and a more tamer rriding style. I've never been in better shape back in the days when I used to ride. Stick at it.
back when i was 20, getting a car was a primary goal in life... all about girls, getting to places and so on. Nowadays when you are seated down inside a car you're just one more drone, sitting down there everyday commuting to their jobs and getting stuck in traffic everytime. Not so cool anymore, nor a symbol of liberty. I mean, cars are still very useful, but their glamour is vanishing. You can find amazing people just riding bicycles nowadays... and maybe renting a car when mandatory.
Dave Mirra said that him and his mates (just as good as him on bikes) use to ride all the time they all got to the car age and bought cars etc. Dave stuck with the bikes, guess they regret their choices now lol.. Biking is fun I gave up too for the exact same reasons you are stating, I regret it big time
That, my friend is what you call a quality top comment. I am proud owner of several top comments. Don't give up. Let me know when you reach double digits.
everybody is going wild and kevin bacon is clapping like a super supportive house wife

sskkuuddrraa That's what I was thinking!!! Waay to low. Cool looking bikes, though!
Sen Flores If you were a bike messenger and a freestyler, wouldn't you have 2 bikes ? :)
irlrp lol maybe, but these are purportedly their work bikes
sskkuuddrraa

That bike trick was cool but that handlebar moustache just propels it to godlike levels.
Classic. THis is what got me into being a courier years ago. (retired) 10yrs vet. DC
Talent from the 80's. Cheese for music. Quicksilver!!
Back in the days....very nice movie
the first guy is Martin Aparijo, then Woody Itson. the guy riding the direct-drive and doing the boomerangs, etc is Pat Romano.
point taken on moustaches. Denim though was in widespread use cowboy time, at least in back to the future, and that proves everything. Timemachines, can't argue with 'em.
GOOD OLD TIMES,, LOVE IT..
Quicksilver! Yeah baby. This was flatland on a road bike. The shit they were doing back then was epic. That brought back some memories.
Those were the good old days!
This is from the 80's movie "Quick Silver".Cool riders.

Step1. Grab a bike. Step 2. Put your hand on the front wheel. Step 3. Roll wheel forward. Step 4. Watch the back wheel FOLLOW!!!
Martin Aparijo is the first rider. Team GT owned the 80's freestyle scene

and that's is how flatland bmx started!
True OG 7 speeders!
Yeah, looks like the first couple bikes were single speed but the rest were fixies. You can tell because the pedals rotate with the wheels.
It's a type of performance biking, they ride very specialist fixed gears, and it's useful for them to have the handlebars on upside down. No one who uses their bike for covering distance would do that.
Its funny how he was kicking the front wheel to go like its connected to the cog or somthing lol
@gooochino The ones that have the petals continuously moving as they are doing tricks are fixed. The other ones just look like single speeds as they are able to coast.
Some of these bike messengers become actors...
those are some of the smallest chainrings i've ever seen on a fixed
Fantastic. Fuck lets dance and all these dancing films at the cinema, this is a proper dance off :D
Interesting how so many bike messengers didn't have any work to do in a city like New York or whatever city this movie was set in.
quicksilver great movie ; )
If I recall correctly, the stunt riders were actual, local bike messengers.
I think a car is kind of a necesity nowadays. Maybe you could buy your car, have it there for dating or emergency cases and such, but you are going to still be using your bike for everything else man. I don't understand why people have to make a choice between the two of them.
I was like, Patrick Stewart? Then I was like, John Candy! Then I was like, HOLY CRAP KEVIN BACON WTF?!?!?!?
when bike messengers really knew how to send a message!
Holy $hit. i didn't know this was possible. O.o
This is fucking amazing.. I love these guys..
g173df It's from a movie called quicksilver with Kevin Bacon no cgi back then, Martin Aparejo is a flatland rider.
absolutely sick!
Legend !
This is from the 80's movie "Quick Silver"
LOVE THIS!!!!
They should make movies about that nowadays.
love the gios cap
You sound like a real winner!
Nice memories. The first guy dancing on the bike was Dennis McCoy, wasn´t it?
0:50 sebastian shaw! go get him magneto!
ROBIN!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING THERE ?!!
1:37 is crazy as hell
Too old for bikes, too old for life.
I wish that I had never stopped riding. I had to sell my bike for rent money and haven't gotten one since. My health has majorly depleeted and now I spend my time wishing I was riding again. This is an easily impressed crowd.
Nice! this style of bmx is called flatland just to let ya kno, what's the name of the song???????

CAUSE HE'S A BADASS
The bike changes between being a fixed gear and single speed all the time
I'm think I'm going to be sick. The bike stuff was cool though.
Thank God the 80's are long gone.
Dave Mirra said that him and his mates (just as good as him on bikes) use to ride all the time they all got to the car age and bought cars etc. Dave stuck with the bikes, guess they regret their choices now lol.. I love the name of the bar....
Name of that super sick awesome track 0.11? that's a fat beat dang woah! those lyrics and high hats Oh Snap!
I like the cycling hat I bought one today
@EpicVideos303 That last dude, who undoubtedly staunched the competition, was riding a fixie.
Is this an actual film or what? I cant find any info on it anywhere. Help please......
The beginning of riding flatland hahaha
THIS IS THE BEAUIFUL OLD SCHOOL FOR THE FUCKING HIPSTERS AND THE FIXED GEAR.
Cruising with that 20/20 Gear ratio..
nice film !
00:15 holy shit Bill O'Reilly!
No, Kevin Bacon is actually in a very active underground bicycling group. Sorry Kev, but the gig is up.
such a beautiful girl...
Keep riding! There are girls that ride bikes too so don't worry you might find a girl that enjoys riding bikes too. =)
badass bicycle gymnasts
Oh god the bars...
there are 1-2 single speed bikes, mostly they are granny-gear fixies though.
Thank u very much
Where BMX flatland begun.
Amazing!
