    Another thing is that garlic makes a great companion crop for anything that you want to protect from herbivore pests. Since garlic doesn't take up a lot of space, you can easily intercrop it with other things, so you don't have to devote a separate bed just for garlic.

    In my experience, and from what I've researched, you should try and source your garlic as locally as possible, and when you find a variety you like, replant the same cloves in subsequent years. This is because garlic adapts to the environment somewhat through "phenotypic plasticity", despite being genetically identical, replanted garlic adapts to the new environment over years.
    A personal anecdote is that I grow a Scottish variety called "doocot" (Hardneck Porcelain) in the mild maritime climate in the SW of the UK. The first year wasn't particularly impressive but subsequent years have improved considerably despite no real changes to soil nutrition.

      This is a great point. We sourced our seed regionally, and we had great success despite our long and to us cold winters. Zone 6A New England

    I checked out seed garlic last fall and the prices are crazy. So i threw some large cloves of garlic in the garden. They did great. I pulled a test one yesterday and it looks great.

    This will be our 4th year planting garlic. 2nd year planting totally from
    home grown. I just checked this years prices of Music and German Extra
    Hardy and it's approaching being a cash crop. $25/lb! For something that
    is so easy to grow, (porcelain hard necks) and flavorful to grow makes
    me wonder why more people don't give them a try. We plant 150+/- in an
    8x4' raised bed. Save 30-40 for replanting, share 20 or so, the rest get us all
    winter/spring, and the rest get dehydrated for our own garlic powder/salt.
    Great video Scott, short, sweet, and to the point.

    I planted my garlic yesterday. I grow a variety called Mountain Majestic. It's a hard neck and usually is purple in color. 4B zone so long cold winters is what we do.
    Thanks for the refresher course Scott. Another great video I shared with many. 👍

    this video is perfect timing and might help me decide which ONES I want and yes the soft neck store longer but from all I've seen are milder flavored as well.For about a month here in our area garlic was non existent in our local grocery store.A serious wakeup call since we use garlic as well as onions almost daily!!! We are in the savannah Ga zone 8 area and it gets quite warm here ...have already decided on hard neck adapted to our climate might be a Creole called Moroccan Red and those gorgeous scapes something I look forward to experimenting with in cooking..would love to find a more pungent spicy one that will work in our area...downside less bulbs but variety abounds...the bigger cloves give a bigger harvest thanks for clarifying that ...thanks so much for the information and stay blessed

    What great video on garlic growing! I have heard of some of the types of garlic, but not all of them. I always learn something from your videos. I just received my garlic that I ordered today. Where I live this state requires that the garlic we can plant has to b e grown in this state too avoid disease.

    I have Chesnok Red, Music and Metechi. I added each to the garden a year apart in the order listed. Adding 1 variety per year spread out the cost of initial purchase. Every year i replant from my own stock, effectively pays me back. Going on 4 years now, the Chesnok Red this year really did great.

    The challenge is that the samplers that are most commonly available you cannot choose the varieties - and buying 6 or 8 can really add up That is why we went with Music. But we chose to mix it up this year and try Georgian fire

    I love garlic and finally grew my own this year. For next year, I’m putting in a local garlic: Mackenzie red, porcelain white, and Russian red - all locally sourced. I stopped buying ‘fresh’ supermarket garlic a long long time ago because it had no taste. None, nada, zilch, zero…. I’m about to plant and it’s thrilling.
    Looking forward to scapes as well…so so good.

    Great stuff, Scott! 👍
    For years I've grown the standard store-bought, soft-neck stuff, and it's always been fine. But this year I grew several varieties of hard-neck, and OMG the flavor is off the charts. I don't think I can go back to soft-neck now. The cloves/head has always bugged me about soft-neck. Often the sizes of the cloves are random with too many spindly ones, which is honestly just plain annoying. You don't get that with hard-neck.
    I'm actually sorting through piles of garlic right now, setting aside the fattest specimens to plant for next year's crop. It'll be time to plant again in 5-6 weeks here. 😊

    I live in Calgary, Canada and I have never grown garlic before. Once this year I heard one next-door neighbor say to another one that the hardneck garlic they planted didn't survive winter as they froze like ice cubes or something like that. Last winter was milder than usual as some days in January were positive degrees.

    • @GardenerScott

      I know many gardeners growing garlic in Canada. My ground freezes in winter and most hardneck garlic can handle temperatures down to -34C.

    I tried to do my garlic in grow bags. It froze to death over the winter (zone 5b, upstate NY), so no garlic--and I did plant german hard neck garlic). This year, it will still be in grow bags, but it will be wrapped in bubble wrap and kept in the garage over winter. It's an unheated garage and gets plenty cold. All that said, I'd love a video specifically on grow bag garlic with special attention to prepping it for winter.

    Hello Gardener Scott,
    I have garlic bulbs from this year’s harvest that are average to below average size; smaller than last year. I planted cloves from last year’s harvest. I still have many big bulbs from last year braided & hanging in kitchen. This year no scapes developed, but the prior year they did, Q: Could I still plant cloves from last year’s harvest; would they be viable and germinate in your opinion as they were harvested in late July 2021? Thank you, and thank you for your service to our great republic. New Mexico 7b

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some cloves can be viable after a year, but many dry out too much. If they appear normal, it's worth a try.

  • @jesusisGod1434

    I had a terrible harvest this year! I hope to figure out what went wrong and try again. I saved my biggest cloves and planted them in my garden (zone 5b) and they didn’t get big they stayed small and finished early! So I’m not sure what happened. I did add compost to top up my bed last year, and added mulch. I wonder if it was the mulch?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mulch shouldn't have that big an impact. Compacted soil, too little water, planting too early or late, and letting scapes grow are common reasons for small garlic.

    Hello Gardener Scott. I’m in NJ 7a and want to experiment by planting my seed potatoes in fall along with German red and elephant garlic. Do you think the garlic will deter pests from digging up the potatoes?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The garlic won't be growing above ground in fall and has minimal deterrence effect.

    Perfect timing! I’m about to buy my garlics in about a week or two. I have never grown garlic, but being one of the most used seasonings for me, it makes sense. I have a question though: I live in zone 6a. Can I plant garlic in a grow bag, or will it get too cold being above the ground less protected like that? If that’s not going to work, I’m assuming a raised bed would be ok? Thanks once again for all the information you provide!

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Garlic can do well in a grow bag and it shouldn't be too cold in 6a. I grow mine in raised beds.

    • @masiolli
      @masiolli 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I think what I’ll do (because this video convinced me to try different types of garlic instead of only one) is plant the bulk in the raised beds and try one or two of each kind in grow bags. This way, if something bad happens, I will still get garlic. I was wanting to use grow bags because I may be moving in the spring / summer next year and I wanted to be able to take my garlic with me. Thanks again!

    • @GardenerScott

      That may work well for you. Because they grow in the same spot for 8-9 months, starting small with pots can free up a bed for other plants.

    I am searching for garlic and shallots to plant this fall. Is there a better place to purchase garlic and shallots for planting? Everywhere I have looked has been so expensive I can't afford to buy it? Can anyone help me?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're not missing something. Garlic and shallots can be expensive. If you know other gardeners who grow garlic you might ask for a bulb or two. Or you can buy a single bulb at a local nursery, plant the cloves, and then save the bulbs next year and multiply the amount you grow. That's what I've done over the years to avoid buying new.
